Sam Hoffman, an entrepreneur and longtime resident of Stamford and Boynton Beach, Fla., died Sunday, March 2 at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla. He was 87. He died of heart failure, according to his family. Born May 5, 1915 in New Haven, he was the son of the late Hyman and Celia Hoffman. Mr. Hoffman was the founder and owner of Barry's Shoes, formerly in Stamford and Westport. He also co-owned the former Adam's Interiors in Darien and the former Fairfield County Estate Liquidators in Norwalk. He is survived by his wife, Judith Hoffman of Stamford and Boynton Beach, Fla.; two sons, Barry Hoffman of New York City and Dennis Hoffman of Los Angeles; a daughter, Loriann Hoffman-Ho of Bayside, N.Y.; a stepson, Michael Wasson of Melbourne, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Tracy Wasson of Shelton; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, March 5 at Congregation Agudath Sholom, 301 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford. Burial will follow at Agudath Sholom cemeteryin Stamford. Shiva will be observed at the home of Loriann Hoffman-Ho. Donald "Don" E. Hofmann, of Gardiner, Mont., died Monday, Aug. 12, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital in Bozeman, Mont. He was 63. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born Feb. 11, 1939, in Stamford, he was the son of the late Walter A. and Helen Lathrop Hofmann. Mr. Hofmann grew up in Stamford and attended Stamford schools. With his father, he owned the Revonah Mobil Station in the Bulls Head section of Stamford. He worked for Flygt Inc./ITT Industries of Norwalk for 27 years as a quality control and warranty manager. Mr. Hofmann married Joni Piche in 1987. After retiring in 1992, they moved to Gardiner where they opened Wood "N" Stitches, an embroidery shop and ice cream parlor. Mr. Hofmann was an avid fisherman and hiker and enjoyed the mountains. His dog Pupper accompanied him on all of his outings. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, DonE Hofmann of Wilton; two daughters, Donna Copley and Lori Hofmann, both of Stamford; and a grandson. A cremation has been held. Fannie J. Holmes, a 50-year Stamford resident, died Monday, Dec. 16, at Stamford Hospital. She was 80. She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family. Born Nov. 13, 1922, in Chatham, Va., she was a daughter of the late Jim and Willie Jones. Mrs. Holmes was educated in the Chatham Public School System. She worked as a private health aide in Fairfield County. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Stamford. She is survived by two sisters, Katherine Jones Davis of Chatham and Thelma Haley of Pelham, N.C.; a brother, Felton Jones of Chatham; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Carrie Whitehead and Elsie Calloway; and two brothers, Edward Lee Jones and John Hill. Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. today, Dec. 20, at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 29 Grove St., Stamford. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Martha V. Holowinko of Burlingame, Calif., a former longtime Darien resident, died Sunday, July 13, in Burlingame, Calif. She was 86. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Nov. 24, 1916, in Amprior, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ellen McGonigal McGuire. Mrs. Holowinko lived in Darien for more than 39 years before moving to Burlingame. She was a retired public-health nurse locally. She was a former member of St. John's Catholic Church in Darien, where she was active in its Women's Guild and Cancer Sewing Group. She also was active in the local Council of Catholic Women. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Blick of San Bruno, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Matthew F. Holowinko. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. John's Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien, with Msgr. Pierre Botton officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's cemeteryin Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 607 Main Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851. Charles B. Hooker of Greenwich died Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Greenwich Hospital. He was 90. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born March 8, 1913, in Lima, Ohio, he was the son of the late Bert and Beatrice Preston Hooker. Mr. Hooker worked as a machinist for Accurate Tool & Dye in Stamford. Mr. Hooker is survived by a son, Robert C. Hooker of West Haven; and a daughter, Joanne Lamberton of Greenwich. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Loprinzo Hooker. Elizabeth Garwood Hubert of Conover, N.C., formerly of Stamford, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Catawba County Hospice House in Newton, N.C. She was 68. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born July 25, 1934, in Augusta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late John and Irene Elliott Garwood. Mrs. Hubert lived in Stamford for 25 years and raised her family in the city.. While living in North Carolina, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Newton. She worked in retail sales with Medisco Co. in Conover. She was an avid basketmaker. She is survived by a son, Richard Hubert of Conover; two daughters, Elizabeth Hubert of Modesto, Calif., and Mary Catherine Felts of Boone, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Weigle of Martinez, Ga.; and three grandsons and two granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis J. Hubert. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 921 Second St. N.E., Hickory, N.C. Norman Humber Sr., of Greene, N.Y., formerly of Stamford, died Saturday, Nov. 30, at Willow Point Nursing Home in Vestal, N.Y. He was 90. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born May 7, 1912, in Yonkers, N.Y., he was a son of the late Florence and Norman L. Humber. He grew up in the Cos Cob neighborhood of Greenwich. He is survived by three daughters, June Brzoska of Stamford, Mary Lou Walker of Sparta, N.J., and Norma Davis of Vero Beach, Fla.; a son, Norman Humber Jr. of Greene; two sisters, Ethel Humber and Eleanor Hull, both of Vero Beach; a brother, Russell Humber of Stamford; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, at St. Maurice Church, 358 Glenbrook Road, Stamford. Thomas Hume
Thomas Hume, an architect and a lifelong Stamford resident, died Friday, Oct. 31, at Stamford Hospital. He was 75. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born Oct. 20, 1928, in Stamford, he was the son of the late Mary Ellen and Raphael Hume. Mr. Hume graduated from Canterbury School in New Milford and earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University. He received a master's degree in architecture from Yale, where he was named a Magnus T. Hopper fellow. He served aboard the USS Grackle as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Hume began his architecture career with the Stamford firm of Sherwood, Mills and Smith. In 1963, he co-founded the Stamford firm of Norton and Hume, which later became Kearin and Hume. His family said Mr. Hume designed St. Joseph Hospital Chronic Care Pavilion in Stamford, the headquarters of Connecticut Bank and Trust in Darien, the Dearfield Medical Building in Greenwich, Branson Instruments manufacturing plants in Stamford and Shelton, the Anita Louise Ehrman Recreation Center in Armonk, N.Y., and several buildings at Brunswick School in Greenwich. After working in Stamford for more than 20 years, he joined the New York firm of Rogers, Burgun, Shahine and Deschler as a senior vice president. Mr. Hume served as president of the board of trustees at the Ferguson Library, president of the board of trustees at Family and Children's Services of Stamford and chairman of the Stamford Bicentennial Committee. In 1971, he won the Democratic mayoral primary, but lost to Julius Wilensky in the general election. An avid sailor since childhood, Mr. Hume raced one-design boats every summer. As a teenager, he won the Junior Championship of Long Island Sound. He earned several titles and trophies, most notably as one of a three-man crew that won the 1966 North American Men's Championship. In 1970, he placed second in the New England Shields Championship. Mr. Hume sailed in several Southern Ocean Racing Conference, Fastnet and Bermuda races. He was a member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich and the Cruising Club of America. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Tulita Mejia Hume of Stamford; three daughters, Mary Elise Papke of Wisconsin; Connie Hume Rodman of Oregon and Maggie Hume of Maryland; three sons, Tony Hume and John Linus Hume, both of New York City, and Emmett Butler Hume of Pennsylvania; four sisters, Dorothy Knapp and Justine Hume, both of California; Mary Louise Hume of England and Brigid O'Brien of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren; and a stepgranddaughter. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Ciseau. There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at St. Clement of Rome Church, 535 Fairfield Ave., Stamford. Lucille Marie Hyde of Norwalk, a former Stamford resident, died Wednesday, July 9, at home. She was 57. She died of cancer, according to her family. Born April 22, 1946, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ann Bacco Hushion. Mrs. Hyde was a Norwalk resident for the past 22 years and an office administrator for News America Marketing of Wilton. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Richard S. Hyde of Norwalk; two sons, Richard Conroy of Seymour and Sean Hyde of Norwalk; three sisters, Patricia Ross of Norwalk, Kathy Davis of Danbury and Roberta Giordano of Newtown; three brothers, Timothy Hushion of Redding, Walter Hushion of West Chicago, and Michael Hushion of Newtown; and several nieces and nephews. Vincenzo Iannone Jr., a Norwalk resident, died Monday, Oct. 7, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 25. He died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, according to police. Born Dec. 20, 1976, in Norwalk, he was a son of Vincenzo and Pasqualina Vona Iannone Sr. of Norwalk. A 1995 graduate of Norwalk High School, Mr. Iannone was vice president of R.I. Pools Inc. of Norwalk. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Vincenzo Iannone III of Norwalk; two brothers, Roberto Iannone of Fairfield and Franco Iannone of Norwalk; two sisters, Stefania Iannone and Daniela Iannone, both of Norwalk; paternal grandparents, Alexandro and Cesaria Iannone of Italy; a maternal grandmother, Anna Vona of Norwalk; and two nephews. Kathleen Iffland of Darien, a former Stamford resident, died Sunday, Dec. 28, at Stamford Hospital. She was 82. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born July 22, 1921, in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Hannah Jane Daly Iffland. She lived in Stamford until 1950, when she moved to Darien. Ms. Iffland was a retired supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Stamford; before that she worked for Norma Hoffman Bearing Co. in Stamford. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Stamford, where she participated in the seniors' group and ran bingo games for two years. Ms. Iffland is survived by a brother, Charles Iffland of Norwalk; and several cousins. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 30, at Nicholas F. Grace Cavalieri Imbrogno of Greenwich died Saturday, June 26, at home. She was 73. She died of heart failure, according to her family. Born Sept. 22, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Lucy DelMastro Cavalieri. Mrs. Imbrogno lived in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich for 52 years. For many years she worked with her husband in his business, Nicholas Imbrogno Excavating. She frequently played piano at local nursing homes, including The Nathaniel Witherell and Edgehill, at town events, and at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Mrs. Imbrogno is survived by her husband, Nicholas Imbrogno of Greenwich; two daughters, Lynn Ambrose of Greenwich and Janet Nota of Bethel; two sisters, Antoinette DeNunzio of Stamford and Edie Goodall of Winsted; and three grandchildren. Hilary Beth Inman of Milford, a former Stamford resident and a vice president at Technology Marketing Corp. in Norwalk, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Milford Hospital. She was 30. She died of complications from pneumonia, according to her family. Born April 20, 1973, in Mount Kisco, N.Y., she was a daughter of Christine H. Jarry Inman of Stamford and the late John L. Inman. Ms. Inman moved to Stamford with her family in 1978. She attended Westhill High School, graduating in 1991, then graduated from the University of Virginia School of Commerce. She was an avid reader who loved to laugh and spend time with her family. At Technology Marketing, she was vice president of conferences and expositions. Ms. Inman was to be married in March. Besides her mother, she is survived by her fiance, Stephen Gencarelli of Milford; a sister, Heather L. Inman of Stamford; a brother, James L. Edward "Red" J. Irick of Orangeburg, S.C., formerly of Columbia, S.C., and Stamford, died Monday, Aug. 4, at Orangeburg Regional Medical Center. He was 78. He died of a heart attack, according to his family. Born Aug. 14, 1924 in Cameron, S.C., he is a son of the late Leila Hanton and Robert Lee Irick Sr. He attended Orangeburg County Training School in Elloree, S.C. Mr. Irick was a member of Brown Chapel AME Church in Cameron, where he was in the gospel choir and was a former trustee. He was instrumental in organizing the men's choir at Brown Chapel. In Stamford, he was an active member of the Bethel AME Church and was involved with the choir. He was also an honorary member of the Palmetto State Law Enforcement Officer's Association in South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Ranger as steward first class. After serving in the military, he returned to South Carolina and married Elizabeth Darby Irick. They moved to Stamford and worked as a welder for Mount Vernon Tool and Die Cast Co. He retired from Norwalk Community Technical College as a maintenance engineer. He loved working with his hands and was skilled at such crafts as die, carpentry and other trades. He was often found helping others to build or fix their homes. He was also an avid deer hunter. He is survived by a son, Edward J. Irick Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Valerie Irick Rainford of Suffern, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Darby Irick; a son, Donald A. Irick; two brothers, Robert and Walter Irick; and two sisters, Alice Irick Caldwell and Ruby Irick Seaberry. Funeral services are 1 p.m. today, Aug. 9, at Brown Chapel AME Church. Pastor Rufus Gaymon will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. James Irving

James Irving of Stamford, formerly of Bridgeport, died Friday, Oct. 10, at Haven Health Care Center in Stamford. He was 60. He died of lung cancer, according to his death certificate. Born May 1, 1943, in Holden, W.Va., he was a son of Castle Irving of Pittsburgh and the late Arthur Irving. Mr. Irving was formerly employed as a bell captain supervisor at the Stamford Sheraton for about seven years, where he was named an outstanding employee. He later worked as a counselor at View Point Recovery Program in Stamford. He lived in Bridgeport and Stratford for 50 years, before moving to Stamford. A sports enthusiast, Mr. Irving had a lifelong love for baseball and was a New York Yankees fan. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, William Irving of Anaheim, Calif., and Gregory Irving of New York City; two aunts; and an uncle. He was predeceased by an aunt. Rose M. Iuso, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Monday, Feb. 24, at Courtland Gardens Health Center in Stamford. She was 93. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Nov. 27, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Josephine Valenti Raffaele. Mrs. Iuso was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Albert F. Iuso of Stamford; two sisters, Mildred Sessa of Ridgefield and Yolanda Sclafani of Stamford; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Salvatore Raffaele, Ernest Raffaele and Alfred Raffaele. Services and burial were private. Born April 14, 1912, in Latvia, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Slava Serebrinnikov. Mrs. Izraelit worked as a saleswoman at a clothing store in Latvia. She is survived by a daughter, Meri Ostrinskaya of Stamford; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Izraelit was predeceased by her husband, Abram Izraelit. A 60-year Stamford resident, Mrs. Jackson worked as an assembly line supervisor at Northam Warren Cosmetic Corp., formerly in Stamford, for 40 years. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in Stamford for more than 50 years. She is survived by a sister, Alice Thompson of New York City; and many nieces, nephews and relatives. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Jackson; three brothers, Esaw Thompson, Robert Thompson and George Thompson; and two sisters, Maggie Thompson and Mattie Fletcher. Born July 4, 1908, in Georgiana, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Bob and Aleene Matthews. Mrs. James lived in Norwalk for more than nine years. She was a dedicated member of Church of God in Stamford. She is survived by two granddaughters, Bobbie Jackson of Norwalk and Minnie Foster of Stamford. Isella B. James, a lifelong Norwalk resident and former Norwalk teacher, died Sunday, Feb. 23, at Bishop Wicke Nursing Home in Shelton. She was 89. She died of complications from a stroke, according to her family. Born July 7, 1913, in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Jeanie Good Bryce. Mrs. James was a school teacher, retiring from the Norwalk public school system. She was a member of the Norwalk United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived a nephew, David W. Bryce of Mashpee, Mass.; and a niece, Cynthia Berdais of Colorado Springs, Colo. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul J. James. No calling hours are planned. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, at the chapel of Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk. Burial will be private. Raymond Community Funeral Home, 5 E. Wall St., Norwalk, handled the arrangements.
