Willie Lee Sapp, a longtime Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, at home. He was 60.
He died of heart failure, according to his family.
Born Sept. 28, 1943, in Williston, S.C., he was the son of the late Harry and Minnie Gaffney Sapp.
Mr. Sapp had lived in Stamford for more than 45 years. He worked as a line technician at Clairol Inc. of Stamford for 25 years. He also was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Port Chester, N.Y.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie Howsie Sapp of Stamford; four daughters, Gwen Howsie, Deborah Minor, Sandra Sapp, all of Stamford, and Yvonne Sapp of Norwalk; a brother, Ulysses Sapp of Harrisburg, Pa.; four sisters, Beatrice Marcilous of Stamford, Sarah Gordon of Williston, Evelyn Sapp of Harrisburg and Minnie Ashley of Fort Myers, Fla.; five grandchildren; an aunt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Harry Sapp Jr., John Sapp, Lorenzo Sapp, Robert Lee Sapp and Isaac Sapp.
Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 23 Slater St., Port Chester, with a funeral service at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow in Spring Grove cemeteryin Darien.

Gene R. Sarsfield of Zebulon, Ga., a retired executive, died Monday, Aug. 4, at Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin, Ga. He was 69.
He died of cardiac arrest, according to his family.
Born June 21, 1934, in Norwalk, he was the son of the late Harry Sarsfield and Hattie Palmer Sarsfield.
Mr. Sarsfield was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired executive vice president with a food service company.
He is survived by his wife, Susan A. Sarsfield of Zebulon; two sons, Bruce Sarsfield of Williamson, Ga., and Michael Sarsfield of Buford, Ga.; two daughters, Colleen Barnes of Jackson, Ga., and Amy Pitts of Yatesville, Ga.; a sister, Harriet S. Prior of Zebulon; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today, Aug. 5, at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home, 1891 West McIntosh Road, Griffin.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, in the chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Bob McCombs will officiate.

Aiko Sato of Wilton, a homemaker and lover of the arts, died Saturday, Aug. 9, at her home. She was 66.
She died of complications from cancer, according to her family.
Born Oct. 30, 1936, in Sendai, Japan, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Satio and Takiko Okada.
Mrs. Sato attended Swarthmore College, where she studied art history. She loved philosophy, the arts and travel.
She came to United States in late 1950s, eventually living in Stamford, Wilton and Weston. She moved to the Netherlands in 1973, where she learned to play the violin. She moved back to Wilton in 1978 and brought the talent with her, teaching the Suzuki violin method for many years. She also enjoyed playing the piano, oil painting and weaving.
While living in Belgium, Spain, Japan, Indiana and Connecticut, she tutored children in mathematics, English, and foreign languages.
She is survived by her husband, Ryozo "Bob" Sato of Wilton; three sons, Akira Sato of Norwalk, Hitoshi Eugene Sato of Wilton and Makoto Sato of Boston; a daughter, Atsuko Sato of Chicago; a sister, Yoko Horiuchi of Tokyo, Japan; and a brother, Kazuhiko Okada of Milan, Italy.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial services will be held at noon Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Wilton Friends Meeting House, 317 New Canaan Road, Wilton.

Oscar Francis Saunders, a lifelong Stamford resident and retired heavy-duty mechanic, died Monday, Oct. 20, at Stamford Hospital. He was 76.
He died of complications from Parkinson's disease, according to his family.
Born June 6, 1927, in Stamford, he was a son of the late Oscar L. and Frances Levandowski Saunders.
Mr. Saunders worked for several years at ARA Transportation Co., formerly of Stamford, as a heavy-duty mechanic. In his 20s, he raced cars in many events at the Danbury Racing Grounds. He owned a midget race car carrying No. 81.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a former member of the East Side Cardinals in Stamford.
Mr. Saunders is survived by two daughters, Kathy Smith and Barbara Sabato, both of Stamford; a son, Gary W. Saunders of Stamford; two sisters, Marie Kinney of Quincy, Ill., and Emily Zarelli of Danbury; a brother, Thomas Saunders of New York; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Lowe Saunders; and a brother, Walter A. Saunders.
There will be no calling hours.
Services and burial will be private.

Concetta "Connie" Sava of Wakefield, Mass., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the EPOC Senior Healthcare Facility in Melrose, Mass. She was 86.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born April 12, 1916, in East Boston, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Salvatore and Carmella Metcalf Ingala.
Mrs. Sava attended Boston public schools. She and her husband, the late Chet Sava, were the owners of Connie's News in Wakefield for many years.
She is survived by a son, Dr. F. Robert Sava, a veterinarian in Norwalk; a daughter, Diane Purcell of Wakefield; a sister, Stella Adagna of Hyde Park, Mass.; a brother, Paul Ingala of Revere, Mass.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private.

John A. Scates Jr., a lifelong Stamford resident and retired machinist for Metro-North Railroad, died Sunday, Jan. 5, at Stamford Hospital. He was 73.
He died of respiratory failure, according to his family.
Born Jan. 31, 1929, in Stamford, he was a son of the late John A. Scates Sr. and Vivian Miller Scates.
Mr. Scates worked with Metro-North for more than 15 years. He was a member of Greater Faith Church in Stamford, where he sang in the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Scates of Stamford; four daughters, Betty Johnson of Lithonia, Ga., Theresa Scates and Dana Mack, both of Bridgeport, and Dionne Scates Anderson of Norwalk; a brother, James Scates Sr. of Stamford; an aunt; 25 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two nephews; and many of cousins.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Scates; and two sons, Bernard Scates and Johnnie A.R. Scates III.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Greater Faith Church, 27 Baxter Ave., Stamford.

Florence Fleming Scates of Stamford, a retired home health aide, died Saturday, June 7, at Stamford Hospital. She was 75.
She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family.
Born Jan. 9, 1928, in Camden, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Victoria Pempleton Fleming.
Mrs. Scates lived in Stamford for 60 years. She worked as a home health aide for 10 years.
She was a charter member of the Greater Faith Tabernacle Church in Stamford, where she was a Sunday school teacher. For many years, she was the supervisor of the Junior Missionaries of the Connecticut State Missionary Baptist Convention and president of the Senior Missionary Society of Greater Faith Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty Fleming Johnson of Lithonia, Ga., Theresa V. Scates of Bridgeport and Dionne Scates Anderson of Norwalk; four brothers, Nathaniel Fleming, Robert Fleming and Charles Fleming, all of Flint, Mich., and Andrew Fleming of Mount Morris, Mich.; two sisters, Geraldine Hines of Stamford and Mamie Tucker of Flint; 26 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Scates Jr.; a sister, Pauline Brown; a son, Johnnie A.R. Scates III; a brother, Ezekial Fleming; and a daughter, Sharon Scates.
Calling hours will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Greater Faith Tabernacle Church, 27 Baxter Ave., Stamford.

Rose J. "Jeri" Schacht of Stamford and Deerfield Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, in Boca Raton Community Hospital in Boca Raton, Fla. She was 94.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Nov. 25, 1908, in North Tarrytown, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Max and Molly Schoenfeld Axelrod.
Mrs. Schacht was a homemaker.
She is survived by her son, Gary Schacht of Stamford and Boca Raton, Fla.; a brother, Sidney Axelrod of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Schacht; and three sisters, Lillian Alexander, Etta Sessa and Sue Levey.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Gary Schacht on Friday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 12.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, in Agudath Sholom Cemetery, West Hill Road, Stamford.

Virginia D. Schaefer, who lived in Darien for more than 50 years, died Friday, Dec. 6 at her home. She was 78.
She died of with cancer, according to her family.
Born Aug. 5, 1924 in Utica, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Edmund and Frances Schollderfer.
Mrs. Schaefer attended Stamford Public Schools and graduated from the Stamford Hospital School of Nursing.
She worked as a registered nurse and a companion to the elderly. She was a member of the United Church of Rowayton in the Rowayton section of Norwalk.
She is survived by her former husband, Robert H. Schaefer of Southbury; two sons, Kenneth Schaefer of Phoenixville, Penn., and Richard Schaefer of New Albany, Ohio; a daughter, JoAnn Baldwin of Branford; and six grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.
A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the United Church of Rowayton, 210 Rowayton Ave., in the Rowayton section of Norwalk. The Rev. John Livingston will preside.
Burial will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park on Oaklawn Avenue in Stamford.

Elizabeth Schaffer of Stamford died Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Stamford Hospital. She was 77.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Sept. 19, 1925, in Strassbourg, France, she was the daughter of the late Lazar and Emily Zaleschitz Heyman.
Mrs. Schaffer was a homemaker and a member of Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William Schaffer of Stamford; a son, Sylvan Schaffer of Queens, N.Y.; a daughter, Marguerite Neuhaus of Stamford; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Feb. 26 at Congregation Agudath Sholom, 301 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford.
Burial followed in Agudath Sholom Cemetery.

Jean I. Scharf, a longtime Stamford resident, died Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. She was 74.
She died of cancer, according to her family.
Born May 6, 1930, in Dusseldorf, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Trudy Kinsky Cappel. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1938.
Mrs. Scharf was a graduate of Douglass College in New Jersey. She enjoyed playing tennis and taking long walks outdoors and had many diverse cultural interests. Her life was centered around family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Carla Carroll of Stamford and Dana Scharf of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Jordan Scharf of Annapolis; two sisters, Margot Bollock of Belmont, Calif., and Susan Critchley of Sydney, Australia; and three grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.

Cynthia Ann Scheckler, a longtime resident of Darien and an assistant account executive for G.W. Hoffman, died Monday, Sept. 29, at Stamford Hospital. She was 48.
She died of complications from cancer, according to her family.
Born Aug. 12, 1955, in Stamford, she was a daughter of Ann Matthys of Darien and the late Robert Matthys.
Mrs. Scheckler was raised in Darien and graduated from Darien High School in 1973.
She and her husband, Robert Sheckler of Darien, were married in 1974 and lived in Stamford for several years before settling in Darien, where they had lived for 24 years.
Mrs. Scheckler worked for G.W. Hoffman in Darien as an assistant account executive for health-care services for the past 14 years. She also worked as an executive secretary for Daseke and Co., formerly of Westport, Chestnutt Corp. in Greenwich, United Methodist Childcare Center in Darien and Ethan Allen in Stamford.
She enjoyed reading, movies, music and spending time with her family and three dogs.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by two sons, Danny Scheckler and Justin Scheckler, both of Darien; a daughter, Katy Scheckler of Darien; a sister, Barbara Kovacs of Darien; and many nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours and funeral and burial will be private.
A memorial service will be at a later date.

Marie Antoinette B. Schilcher, a former resident of Wilton and Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, Feb. 3, at home in the Rowayton section of Norwalk. She was 92.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born April 23, 1910, in Norwalk, she was a daughter of the late Paul Frank and Magdalena Mattes Bassler.
Mrs. Schilcher attended Norwalk schools. In 1935, she married Vincent E. Schilcher, an employee of the New Canaan Post Office who retired as assistant postmaster in 1968. He died in 1982.
Mrs. Schilcher was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She was employed by Yale & Towne Manufacturing Co. in Stamford before working as a bookkeeper for Walter Stewart's Market and Gristede's Market in New Canaan.
After raising her family, she provided private child care in Wilton and New Canaan. She also worked for First National Bank of New Canaan, Wilton Center branch, and as a staff assistant at the Friend's Cooperative Nursery School in Wilton. She was a member of the Rowayton Gardeners.
In 1982, Mrs. Schilcher made her home with the family of her daughter, Lois Froelich of Rowayton.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Lynn Richardson of New Canaan; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers, Frank Bassler, George Bassler, Paul Bassler, Frederick Bassler and Robert Bassler; and three sisters. Josephine Taft, Helen Miller and Eleanor Green.
No calling hours are planned.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at United Church of Rowayton, 210 Rowayton Ave., Norwalk. The family will greet guests after the service.

Julia E. Schmidt of Fairfield, a homemaker and former Stamford resident, died Wednesday, June 18, at The Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield. She was 89.
She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family.
Born June 29, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Simon Hartrick.
Mrs. Schmidt was a homemaker. She lived in Stamford for 45 years before moving to Fairfield. She was active with Union Memorial Church in Stamford, where she taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Patchogue, N.Y.
She is survived by a son, Robert F. Lockwood of Wallingford; a daughter, Frances Docimo of Greenwich; three stepdaughters, Carol Low of East Patchogue, N.Y., Jean Pordon of New York state and Janice Chwalek of Floral Park. N.Y.; a stepson, William Schmidt Jr. of East Patchogue, N.Y.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Earle Lockwood; her second husband, William Schmidt; a brother, John Hartrick; and a sister, Ruth Sweeney.
Services and burial were private.

John T. "Jack" Schmiedel, a truck driver and lifelong Stamford resident, died Wednesday, June 16, at Stamford Hospital. He was 73.
He died of cancer, according to his family.
Born Jan. 6, 1931, in Stamford, he was the son of the late John and Hazel McCabe Schmiedel.
Mr. Schmiedel worked at Pitney Bowes in Stamford as a truck driver. He also worked for the city of Stamford as a crossing guard.
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War.
He was an avid camper and loved animals.
Mr. Schmiedel is survived by two sons, Michael Schmiedel and John T. Schmiedel Jr., both of Stamford; a daughter, Marie A. Schmiedel of Ansonia; and a granddaughter.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret "Maggie" D'Agostino Schmiedel; and a sister, Catherine Joyce Green.

Mathilde K. Ischen Schmitz, of Norwich, N.Y., a former Stamford resident, died Sunday, Oct. 12, at Valley View Nursing Home in Norwich. She was 93.
She died of natural causes, according to her family.
Born Feb. 7, 1910 in Buhne, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Ignaz and Katharina Engemann Ischen.
Mrs. Schmitz lived in Stamford for most of her life, before moving to Oxford, N.Y. in 1998. She moved to Norwich about a year ago.
For many years, she and her husband owned and operated the County Delicatessen on Bedford Street in Stamford. She was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church, the German Club and Turner Liedertafel Singing Society, all in Stamford.
She is survived by a daughter, Gertrude S. Leone-Schneider of Oxford, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ewald H. Schmitz Sr.; and a son, Ewald H. Schmitz Jr.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford.

Charles William Schneible, founder of Schneible Machinery Corp., died Sunday, Feb. 2, at home in Stamford. He was 78.
He died of complications from throat cancer, according to his family.
Born Feb. 2, 1925, in New York City, he was the son of the late Carl A. and Caroline Strathman Schneible.
Mr. Schneible was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in chemical engineering. He was elected to the honorary engineering societies Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. He earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from New York University and later earned professional engineering certification.
In 1955, Mr. Schneible began his career as a consultant. He later founded Schneible Machinery, where he designed and built custom machinery for the copper tubing industry worldwide.
In his early years he was an avid golfer and later enjoyed boating and fishing on Long Island Sound.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Wills Schneible of Stamford; a daughter, Wendy Schneible of Lasqueti Island, British Columbia; a son, Eric Schneible of Stamford; and two grandsons.
Calling hours will be 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 5, at Bouton & Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford.

She died of complications from surgery, according to her family.
Born July 8, 1946, in Stamford, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Felicia LoRusso Panucci.
Mrs. Sciarretta lived in Stamford her entire life before moving to Norwalk two years ago.
She is survived by her husband, Mario Sciarretta Sr. of Norwalk; two sons, James E. Sciarretta and Mario Sciarretta Jr., both of Norwalk; a daughter, Sandra M. Kulis of Norwalk; two sisters, Katherine D. Faugno of Stamford and Judy Patricelli of Norwalk; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ralsey B. "Coke" Scofield Jr. of St. Michaels, Md., a former longtime Stamford resident, died Friday, Jan. 16, at William Hill Manor in Easton, Md. He was 81.
He died of pneumonia, according to his family.
Born March 22, 1922, in Stamford, he was the son of the late Ralsey B. Scofield Sr. and Pauline Johnston Scofield.
Mr. Scofield graduated from King School in Stamford, now King & Low-Heywood Thomas School, in 1940 and attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., where he was a member of the fencing team and the Outing Club.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, graduating at George Field, Ill. He taught twin-engine advanced piloting before serving as a C-47 pilot with the Troop Carrier Command Squadron in the Philippine Islands.
He returned to Dartmouth after his release from active duty in 1946 and received a bachelor's degree in English.
Mr. Scofield worked for Bruce and Cook Inc., a sheet metal warehouse formerly in New York City, for many years. He later worked as a manufacturer's representative on the East Coast for Chicago-based Litho-Strip Corp., retiring in 1982. He moved from Stamford to St. Michaels in 1976.
He enjoyed gardening, reading, sketching and watercolor painting.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Parker Plumley Scofield of St. Michaels; two sons, John R. Scofield and Richard G. Scofield, both of St. Michaels; a daughter, Nancy Scofield Masone of St. Michaels; and six grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Christ Church, 103 Willow St., St. Michaels.
A private burial will be at a later date.

Dorothy B. Scofield, a lifelong resident of Darien, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Stamford Hospital. She was 71.
She died of cardiac arrest, according to her family.
Born May 28, 1932, in Amsterdam, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Robert Harold Barrigar and Mary Elizabeth Wiegand Barrigar.
Mrs. Scofield graduated from Darien High School and the New York School of Floral Design in New York City.
She was owned Rice-Scofield Florist in Stamford for 10 years. She also worked part time at Nielsen's Florist in Darien.
Mrs. Scofield is survived by three sons, Robert T. Scofield, Jeffrey Scofield and Andrew Scoffield, all of Darien; and three sisters, Betty Torpey of Stamford, and Mary B. Avery and Edna Helt, both of Lynchburg, Va.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert F. Scofield; and two brothers, Robert Barrigar and James Barrigar.
Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
