WILSON
Martha Ann Wilson of Boca Raton, Fla., and formerly of Bridgeport, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 22, 2002, after a short stay at JFK Hospital, Atlantis, Fla. Her son was at her bedside. Mrs. Wilson had moved to Florida in recent years to live with her son. Those years were pain-free, a time of great understanding between mother and son, and among the happiest of Martha`s unfortunately shortened, but still long life. Mrs. Wilson was born at 2 Hillview Street in the North End of Bridgeport, on September 5, 1923, the fourth and youngest child of Anna Juliana Hugya (Huda) and Michael Edward Gombar. She attended St. Patrick`s and Sheridan grammar schools and graduated from Central High School in 1942. She was a founding member of the pistol team, a member of the swimming team, puppet club, science club, yearbook staff, operetta, and after high school, frequently viewed the Big Bands at the Pleasure Beach and Ritz Ballrooms. Mrs. Wilson began working during high school, holding summer jobs at Grant`s department store. Following graduation, she worked at several Bridgeport companies and Bridgeport city offices, including the law firm of Geduldig and Kusnitz, the Bridgeport Department of Vital Statistics, Dictaphone Corp., Manning Maxwell and Moore, Sikorsky Aircraft and the comptroller of the City of Bridgeport. She married Raymond Francis Wilson Sr. and enjoyed a happy 37-year marriage before Mr. Wilson`s death. In her spare time, Mrs. Wilson loved to garden, shop and care for animals, especially her cats. She was also a wonderful sketch artist. She will be sorely missed by her son and others that found the time to appreciate her loyalty, honesty, kindness, intellect and the immense courage she possessed in confronting an emotional illness whose manifestations often left her isolated and the target of jokes and ill will. Mrs. Wilson lived in Connecticut most of her adult life, moving to Florida in her later years to live with her son. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Albert Gombar and is survived by her son, Raymond Francis Wilson Jr.; her older sister, Irene Mihalko; her nieces and nephews, Doreen Caiola, Gary Gombar, Albert Gombar, Peggy Gale, Anna Mary Brouns, Michael Mihalko, Lynn Krause, Margaret Wilson, Stanley Wilson and David Wilson; her sister-in-law, Margaret Wilson; and her first cousins, William Gombar, Marion Sebens, Frances Kanuch, Ann Marie Sikora, Richard Gombar, Eleanor Figlar and Ethel Kane; her matron of honor and longtime friend, Roberta Schmidt; and longtime friend, Helen Merrigan; and many warm and helpful relatives, friends and neighbors, including Sarah Burns, Charlotte Lowe and the Merandos who often came to Martha`s aid, even when her deep fears caused her to sometimes, not so gently, push others away. In lieu of, or in addition to flowers, after many interviews, the family has chosen four charitable organizations to honor Martha, three whose aim is to eliminate diseases or products that had negatively effected her life, and one (the Mormon Church) that stepped in, on an unsolicited basis almost miraculously, without charge, to shine light during her darkest hours with both its generous contribution of physical assistance and its sustained efforts through its family history center to bring families together. Donations in her memory may be made to: Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids; Association of Cancer Online Resources, Inc.; National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, or Latter Day Saints Church (Bridgeport Branch Missionary Fund) in care of Raymond F. Wilson Jr., 950 Ponce De Leon Road, Unit 209, Boca Raton, Fl 33432. Any donation is warmly appreciated.
