Paul Boczer Jr.

Paul Boczer Jr., a lifelong Norwalk resident, died Monday, July 1, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 68. He died of heart complications, according to his family. Born Sept. 21, 1933, in Norwalk, he was the son of the late Paul and Olga Horvath Boczer . Mr. Boczer was a graduate of J.M. Wright Technical School in Stamford and attended Bridgeport Engineering Institute. He was retired from Nash Engineering when it was based in Norwalk, and worked as a draftsman and purchasing agent. He was a member and former vice chairman of the board of directors for the St. Ann Club and a member of the Sons of Italy, both of Norwalk. He was a longtime member of the Calvin Reformed Church in Norwalk and served on the consistory. He was a member of the church's senior choir. Mr. Boczer was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Dean Boczer of Norwalk; a son, Christopher Dean Boczer of Huntington; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. Members of the Sons of Italy will gather at the funeral home at 7 p.m., and members of the St. Ann Club will gather at 7:30 p.m. A service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at the funeral home. John Matson, 61, a Greenwich resident, died Monday, July 8, at his home. He died of pancreatic cancer, according to his family. Born Sept. 17, 1940, in McPherson, Kan., he was a son of Helen Matson of Irvine, Calif., and the late Edwin Matson. Mr. Matson litigated major securities and negligence cases, managing the Ernst & Young litigation department. During his 25 years with the company, he was an adviser to the senior management of the principal practice units and supervised up to 40 lawyers and outside counsel in cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars. After retiring, he worked as a legal volunteer assisting companies and needy individuals.?? In 1989, he appeared before the Supreme Court in Reves v. Ernst & Young. The case helped establish the legal definition of a security. In 1992, he helped establish the extent of third-party liability for auditors in Biley v. Arthur Young & Co., a landmark professional negligence case, and in 1985 he tried one of the few Section 11 cases of the 1933 Securities Act that have come to trial. He represented his firm before the Securities and Exchange Commission and other federal, state and professional regulators. Mr. Matson earned a bachelor of arts degree with honors in history from Northwestern University in 1962 and a law degree from Harvard in 1965. Before joining Ernst & Young in 1976, he was an associate and later a partner in Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson & Kitch in Wichita, Kan., from 1968 to 1976, and Ross & Hardies in Chicago from 1965 to 1968. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jane Finn of Greenwich; a son, Jason Matson of Atlanta; and a daughter, Morgan Matson of Los Angeles. There will be no calling hours. Rose Perna, 92, of Greenwich, died Sunday, Feb. 17, at The Nathaniel Witherell nursing home. She died of natural causes, her family said. Born on June 1, 1909, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., Mrs. Perna was the daughter of the late Alfonso Riale and the late Rose Morano. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank J. Perna Sr. Mrs. Perna was a presser and worked at Boughton Laundry in Greenwich. She lived in town for 26 years and was a member of St. Mary Parish. She is survived by two daughters, Rosemarie Giammarino of Bridgeport and Phyllis Jane Fink of Norwalk; a son, Frank J. Perna Jr. of Greenwich; two brothers, Albert Costantino of Mount Vernon and Gerard Costantino of Greenwich; a sister, Loretta Tozzoli of Stamford; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Perna also was predeceased by a daughter, Eleanor Jean Perna; four brothers, Alfonso Riale, Phillip Riale, Carmine Riale and Angelo Riale; and a sister, Phyllis Cassio. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 178 Greenwich Ave. Interment will follow in St. Mary's cemeteryon North Street. Friends may call tomorrow at Leo P. Pierre Weis, a 60-year Stamford resident, died Monday, June 3, at Stamford Hospital. He was 92. He died of pneumonia, according to his family. Born Dec. 15, 1909, in Lille, France, he was the son of the late Edmund and Noami Weil Weis. Mr. Weis graduated from the Sorbonne and was a lieutenant in the French Army. He came to the United States in 1937. He returned to France in 1939 and fought in World War II, and was decorated for his service. When France surrendered, he went to Casablanca in North Africa and worked briefly for the Free French as a diplomatic courier. After he returned to the United States, he became a U.S. citizen and a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Mr. Weis had a 40-year career in the broadcast industry. He was president of United Artists domestic TV sales from 1968 to 1972. As a special projects sales executive for Metromedia Producers Corp., he helped launch the Merv Griffin Show. In the mid-1970s, he joined ITC Entertainment as executive vice president, where he developed the marketing and sales strategy for Jim Henson's "The Muppet Show." He retired in 1985. He was an avid golfer and a member of Rockrimmon Country Club. He is survived by a sister, Linette Brugmans of Fort Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Anne Brown of Stamford and Ellen Weis Cooper of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Eva Urban Watt, a Norwalk resident, died Monday, June 3, at Notre Dame Convalescent Home in Norwalk. She was 92. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Dec. 5, 1909, in Watervliet, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Pelagua Andrechyn Urban. Mrs. Watt retired from Pitney Bowes Inc. in Stamford, where she was a secretary of the accounting department. She was a founding member of the Women's Golf Association at Hubbard Heights golf course in Stamford and the second women's golf commissioner in Stamford. She also was an avid bowler. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Watt Andrews of Norwalk; a son, James Watt III of Stamford; three brothers, Peter Urban of Alpine, N.J., Theodore Urban of Fresno, Calif., and William Urban of Saloma Beach, Calif.; and a granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James Watt Jr.; three daughters, Ann Ferris, Mary Cahill and Kay Williamson; and a brother, John Urban. There are no calling hours. Anthony J. Vagnone, a longtime Stamford resident, died Tuesday, June 4, at Stamford Hospital. He was 76. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born March 3, 1926, in New York City, he was a son of the late Frank and Louise Gentile Vagnone. During World War II, Mr. Vagnone served in the Navy aboard the USS Clarence L. Evans. He was co-owner of the Pickle Barrel Deli in Greenwich in the 1960s and owned Nate's Diner in Stamford in the 1970s. During the 1980s, he worked for Stamford Box Lunch and was head grill man of The Dog House on Hope Street in Stamford. Mr. Vagnone was a member of Columbus Center of New Canaan and the Nurney Club of Stamford. He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn Vitti Vagnone of Stamford; a son, Frank Louis Vagnone of Stamford; his former wife, Pearl DeRubis Vagnone of Stamford; a brother, Ralph Vagnone of Stamford; and two sisters, Lucy Cerulli of Guilford and Anna Lovallo of Stamford. Jacob Malin, a longtime Stamford resident, died Monday, April 15, at Stamford Hospital. He was 94. He died of natural causes, according to his family. Born June 2, 1907, in Plock, Poland, he was the son of Simon and Hilda Malin. Mr. Malin owned United Beauty Supply & Ace Beauty Supply in Monroe before retiring in 1999. He was a mason for more than 60 years. He is survived by a son, Herbert Malin of Kings Point, N.Y.; a sister, Lillian Levine of Somerville, N.J.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mollie Malin, and a son, Robert Malin. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at Beth David cemeteryin Elmont, N.Y. Shiva will be held the evenings of Wednesday, April 17, and Thursday, April 18, at his home.

Paul Chutka Jr., a Norwalk resident, died Monday, April 15, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 74. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born July 5, 1927, in North Castle, N.Y., he was a son of the late Paul and Mary Mitchick Chutka. Mr. Chutka served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a past commander of VFW Post No. 10112, Greenwich Memorial Post. He worked for Macky's Mobil Service Station in Greenwich before retiring in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Rogers Chutka of Norwalk; a son, Brian Paul Chutka of Clearfield, Utah; a daughter, Carol Ann Kasmarski of Milford; two brothers, William Chutka of Charleston, S.C., and John Chutka of Worcester, N.Y.; two sisters, Virginia Mead of Worcester, N.Y., and Mary Torlish of Lake Carmel, N.Y.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley Hughes Williams, a Darien resident since 1955, died Friday, June 7 at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. She was 81. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Aug. 7, 1920, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Reginald and Ruth Geist Hughes. Mrs. Williams was active in the Darien Book Aid and other local charities. She was a member of Noroton Presbyterian Church of Darien. She is survived by two sons, Stanford K. Williams of Northbrook, Ill., and David G. Williams of Putney, Vt.; a daughter, Laura R. Williams O'Brien of Litchfield; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, D. Gordon Williams. Burial was private. Vera C. Rupert Weaver, a longtime resident of Stamford, died Friday, Feb. 22, at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence at Stamford Hospital. She was 77. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Dec. 29, 1924, in Beaver Falls, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Charlotte Dershimer Rupert. Mrs. Weaver was a Stamford resident for 26 years and an employee of Citibank of New York for 18 years. She was a member of St. Maurice Church, a Red Cross blood drawing volunteer and a member of AARP Chapter 546. She was an avid volunteer and served on many committees at St. Maurice. She is survived by her husband, Howard Weaver of Stamford; two sons, Richard J. Branda of Ramsey, N.J., and John A. Branda of Queens, N.Y.; two daughters, Patricia DeLecce of Huntington, N.Y., and Jo-Ann Betsch of Milford, Pa.; a brother, Leonard Rupert of Detroit; and 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Branda, who died in 1972; a sister, Alberta Rairigh; and a brother, Eugene Rupert. Louise Toscano, a Greenwich resident and a town employee, died Tuesday, June 18, at Greenwich Hospital. She was 79. She died of kidney failure, according to her family. Born Feb. 28, 1923, in the Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Teresa Fariello Toscano. Mrs. Toscano was an employee of Greenwich Registrars of Voters office. She enjoyed arts and crafts. She is survived by a daughter, Rosemary Toscano of Greenwich; a son, Vincent M. Toscano of Port Chester, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank R. Toscano, who died in 1997. Frank J. Tomczyk of Greenwich died Wednesday, March 13, at Greenwich Hospital. He was 86. He died of complications from pneumonia, his family said. Born March 7, 1916 in Greenwich, he was the son of the late Jozef and Karolina Gurdak Tomczyk. Mr. Tomczyk worked as a tool and die maker at R.B. & W in Port Chester, N.Y. Later, he worked at Stamford Tool and Die and then at Electrolux, from which he retired. He was U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II in the South Pacific, New Guinea, the Philippines and Australia. He was an avid fisherman and boater. Mr. Tomczyk is survived by three daughters, Hazel L. Taylor of Danbury, Trudy Paight of Stamford and Carolyn Tomczyk of Torrington; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth L. Helen Zavory Toledon, a Darien resident, died Thursday, April 18, at home. She was 83. She died of natural causes, according to her family. Born Oct. 3, 1918, in Emeighrun, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Susan and Gabor Zavory. Mrs. Toledon attended Norwalk schools. She was the former owner of the Darien Grill. She was a member of Darien Senior Center, AARP and the Darien Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Toledon Curtis of Darien and Barbara Toledon Bajek of Surfside Beach, S.C.; a brother, Albert Zavory of Darien; four sisters, Elizabeth Gadoci, Irene Hastings, Marie Smilansky and Dorothy Valentik, all of Norwalk; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester Toledon in 1964; and two brothers, Gabor Zavory and Joseph Zavory. Anna Yurkewecz Studley, a Stamford resident, died Tuesday, June 11, at Stamford Hospital. She was 88. She died of an aneurysm, according to her family. Born Anna Helen Yurkewecz, Dec. 14, 1913, in Glen, N.Y. she was the eldest daughter of Helen and Charles Yurkewecz. She graduated from the New York Institute of Dietetics. She worked for Presbyterian Hospital & Sanitarium in Albuquerque, N.M., and then Bruns Army Hospital in Santa Fe. She also taught nutrition for the Red Cross. She married the late Glen Chrisman, a rancher and local sheriff. After her husband died she settled in Stamford, and married the late Theodore Studley, the acting fire chief. Mrs. Studley was a member of the American Dietetic Association, Darien Senior Center, Darien AARP and Glenbrook Community Center. She is survived by a son, John Chrisman of Stamford and New York City; a stepson, Theodore Studley of Tyrone, Ga.; a sister, Mary Ripley of Amsterdam, N.Y.; three brothers, William Yurkewecz, Howard Yurkewecz and Eugene Yurkewecz, all of Fultonville, N.Y.; and 21 nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. There will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to one's favorite charity.

Edward L. Sommers of South Salem, N.Y., a former New Canaan resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 80. He died of a lung condition, according to his family. Born June 19, 1921, in Springfield, Ill., he was the son of the late William and Anna Koenig Sommers. Mr. Sommers attended Springfield schools and graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. The youngest of seven children, he was active in sports when he was young. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II. Mr. Sommers was a director of accounting for GTE Corp., formerly in Stamford. He resided in New Canaan for 25 years before moving to South Salem six years ago. He was a member of St. Mary's Church of Ridgefield. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wanda Geist Sommers of South Salem; two sons, Joseph W. Sommers of Stamford and Ronald E. Sommers of Southbury; two daughters, Ruth Sommers of Westport and Michelle Shepherd of Mendham, N.J.; and five grandchildren. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at St. Mary's Church, 183 High Ridge Ave., Ridgefield. Burial will follow in St. Mary's cemeteryin Ridgefield. Donald F. Sirine of Orlando, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 16, at Westminster Towers in Orlando. He was 81. He died of a stroke, according to his family. Born Jan. 1, 1921, in Bridgeport, he was a son of Fairchild and Anna Mortensen Sirine. Mr. Sirine was raised in Trumbull and graduated from high school in Bridgeport. He received a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1943 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. A month later, he was in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During World War II, his unit designed and constructed prisoner-of-war camps and decommissioned the Eiffel Tower, returning it to civilian use. After the war ended in Europe, he returned to the United States to prepare for an invasion of Japan. After the war, he married Geraldine Fisher, who also received a bachelor's degree in architecture from Pratt Institute. In 1946, he taught architectural drafting at Pratt Institute and worked on hospitals and housing in the New York City area. In 1951, he moved to White Plains, N.Y., where he worked for Perkins & Will, specializing in primary and secondary schools. He later joined Sherwood, Mills & Smith in Stamford, the largest architectural firm at that time in Connecticut. There he specialized in educational, medical and research facilities. He was a past president of the Stamford chapter of Kiwanis and a member for many years. Mr. Sirine designed and built a home in Ridgefield for his family. Later he moved to Orlando, where he worked primarily on hospitals. He retired in 1983. He was an avid reader, gardener, stamp collector, investor, traveler, swimmer and art enthusiast. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Sirine of Orlando; a son, Brion Sirine of Philadelphia; two daughters, Maren Sirine of Maui, Hawaii, and April Pease of Ridgefield; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, 301 N.E. Lake Ivanhoe Blvd., Orlando. Walter Shinn, of Norwalk, a longtime Stamford resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, at home. He was 48. His cause of death was undetermined, according to his family. Born Aug. 19, 1953, in Aberdeen, Miss., he was a son of Dorothy Johnson-Shinn of Stamford and the late Cleveland Shinn. Mr. Shinn was a truck driver and a member of Union Baptist Church in Stamford. He lived in Stamford for 25 years until moving to Norwalk in 1997. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Gill-Shinn of Norwalk; a daughter, Asheena Shinn-Langlois of Derby; a son, Nigel T. Shinn of Norwalk; seven brothers, Willie Howard Shinn and Cleveland Shinn, both of Stamford, Leon Shinn of Andalusia, Ala., Joseph Lloyd of Tupelo, Miss., Jasper Ray Shinn of Columbus, Miss., and Jimmy Dean Shinn and Walter Dean Shinn, both of Caledonia, Miss.; nine sisters, Elaine Carothers of Alexandria, Va., Elois Sims of Hamilton, Miss., Joyce Blaylock and Cornelia Shinn, both of Caledonia, Retha Foster of Killeen, Texas, and Lillie Jennings, Mary Shinn and Virginia Lewis, all of Columbus; one granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Lola Thomas; and two brothers, Winston Shinn and Thomas Shinn. Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to noon today, March 5, at Union Baptist Church, 817 Newfield Ave., Stamford. A funeral service will follow. Burial will be in Woodland cemeteryin Stamford. Martha T. Ryan, a Norwalk resident, died Sunday, April 14, at Norwalk Hospital. She was 84. She died of heart failure, according to her family. Born March 23, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Jonathan Skrensky and Leonora Gretsky. A 60-year Norwalk resident, Mrs. Ryan was a member of Elderhouse. She is survived by a son, Richard T. Ryan of Danbury; two daughters, Kathleen Stone of Norwalk and Sharon Cocchia of Middlebury; a sister, Mary Shafraneck of Norwalk; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 18, at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 18, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. John cemeteryin Norwalk. John "Jack" Robie Jr., a former Stamford resident, died Sunday, Feb. 17, at home in Monroe, Ga. He was 66. He died of cancer, according to his family. Born Sept. 19, 1935, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late John and Anne Robie. Mr. Robie was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He also owned and operated Robie's Restaurant on Cove Road in Stamford. He is survived by his wife, Joan Robie of Monroe; a son, Daniel Bruce Robie of Las Vegas; five daughters, Deborah Ann Longyear of Stamford, Lynn Ellen Robie-Cambareri of White Plains, N.Y., Lauren Louise Henson of Edina, Minn., Dawn Marie Keppler of Fairfield and Mary Lou Francis of Raleigh, N.C.; a stepson, Wayne Civita of Woodstock, N.Y.; and 17 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Bedford St., Stamford.
