Herbert M. Peterson
NEW BRITAIN – Herbert M. Peterson, 97, of Roslyn Drive, the widower of the late Edythe (Woodruff) Peterson, died Saturday night (June 16, 2001) at a local convalescent home. Born in Astoria, New York, the son of the late Herbert and Georgianna (Minty) Peterson, he graduated from Milford High School in 1921, and from Wesleyan University in 1925, and moved to New Britain in 1934 where he was employed by THE HERALD as office manager, retiring in April of 1969 as General Manager, Treasurer, and Executive Vice-President of The Herald Publishing Company. He was a member of South Congregational – First Baptist Church, President of the Connecticut Daily Newspaper Association, President of the New England Daily Newspaper Association, Director of the Bureau of Advertising of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, President of the New Britain Y.M.C.A., President of the New Britain Rotary Club, a member of Shuttle Meadow Country Club where he was Secretary of The Round Table, and a member of the State Seniors Golf Association. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Pat Peterson of Princeton, Massachusetts, three grandchildren, John, Alan, and Sandra Peterson, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Ann Louise Peterson. A Memorial Service will be held Friday (June 22) at 11am in The Erwin Chapel of South Congregational – First Baptist Church, New Britain. Interment in Milford Cemetery, Milford, will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of of South Congregational – First Baptist Church, 90 Main Street, New Britain 06051. Porter’s Funeral Service in Kensington is in charge of arrangements.
Eliot Hale Porter II
Eliot Hale Porter II, 78, of 27 Wilbur Road, Stonington, and of Fishers Island, New York, formerly of New Britain and Southington, the widower of Marilyn (Broersma) Porter, and the husband of Marcia Baker (Fountain) Woolworth Porter, died early Wednesday morning (March 20, 2002) at his home after a lengthy illness. Born in Hartford, the son of Maxwell S. and Rachel (Parker) Porter, he graduated from Mooreland Hill School, attended Westminster School in Simsbury, Taft School, and graduated from Cheshire Academy; and attended Erskine College, Trinity College, and the University of Michigan; served in the 75th Infantry Division, U.S. Army in Europe in WWII; and was the fourth generation of Bryan Churchill Porter’s family to be the President of both B.C. Porter and Sons Furniture Store and Porter’s Funeral Service. He attended Road Church in Stonington; was a member, deacon, trustee, and moderator of Union Chapel on Fishers Island; a member and former deacon of First Church of Christ, Congregational in New Britain; a director of the Trustee Committee of New Britain Bank and Trust Company; a director of the New Britain Chamber of Commerce; a corporator of the American Savings Bank; a director of the Connecticut Chapter of the Interior Design Society; selected an All American Merchant for the furniture industry; a trustee, member of Founders, and past President of Mooreland Hill School; a member of the executive committee of the Westminster School Alumni Association; past President of the Boys and Girls Club of New Britain; corporator and director of New Britain General Hospital; a member of the executive committee of the Hospital Council of Greater Hartford; past president of the New Britain Rotary Club; corporator of the New Britain Y.M.C.A.; past President of the New Britain Protestant Men’s Association; a member of the Southington Republican Town Committee and was an elected town Representative; corporator of The Institute of Living; a member of Friends of the New Britain Museum of American Art; a member and past President of the New Britain Club; and a charter member of the Saturnites. He loved racing and cruising on his sloop “Chrisada” with family and friends, was an avid tennis player, and was a member of Mystic Seaport; Shuttle Meadow Country Club; the New England Lawn Tennis Association; Fishers Island Country Club; The Off Soundings Club where he served as past Commodore; Fishers Island Yacht Club where he was past Commodore; the Corinthians; Ram Island Yacht Club; Wadawanuck Yacht Club in Stonington; the National Bullseye Association; U.S.Y.R.U.; the New Britain Power Squadron; and a former member of the executive committee of E.C.Y.R.A. where he was a member of the E.C.Y.R.A.-O.R.C. planning committee. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Peggy Porter of Kensington, and David and Julie Porter of Unadilla, New York; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Porter and George Loveday of Stonington and Fishers Island; a sister, Maxine Porter Arnold of Middlebury, Fishers Island, and Naples, Florida; seven grandchildren; three nieces; and four nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday (March 23, 2002) at 1pm at The First Church of Christ, Congregational, 830 Corbin Avenue, New Britain. A second memorial service will be held June 15, 2002, in the Union Chapel at Fishers Island, New York. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Rena (Stockwell) Rich
BRISTOL – Rena (Stockwell) Rich, 83, wife of Lester Rich of 134 McIntosh Street, died Tuesday morning (October 30, 2001) at a local convalescent home. Born in Hartford, she graduated from Buckley High School, and was employed as a caterer at Wadsworth Atheneum for many years. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kim and Eve Rich in Oregon, and Glen and Sharon Rich of Winsted, eight daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Clarence Bodamer of Eastham, Massachusetts, Leslie and James Lowrey of Bristol, Susan and Raymond Cargill of Burlington, Candi and William Nightingale of Bristol, Valerie and David Watson of Bristol, Amy and Jay Holland in Pennsylvania, Sandra and Terry Miyashiro in California, and Wendy and Michael McCormick of Glastonbury, thirty-seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Lester D. Rich Jr. and Frederick C. Rich. A funeral service will be held Friday (November 2, 2001) at 10am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 851 Stafford Avenue, Bristol. Burial will be in Beckley Cemetery, Berlin. Maria (Raso) Ruscito
KENSINGTON - Maria (Raso) Ruscito, 51, of Briarpatch Drive, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully Sunday (July 1, 2001) with her family by her side. Born in Pontecorvo, Italy. She was the daughter of Ida (Caporuscio) Raso and the late Guieseppe Raso. Maria lived in Kensington for 23 years with her husband of 35 years, Stefano Ruscito. She leaves her daughter Anna Sagan and her husband Michael and her son Carlo and his Carla, all of Kensington. She is also survived by her sisters Pia Lillis and her husband Tom of Middletown and Rita Raso of Italy and her brother Allessandro and his wife Michelina of Italy. Her grandchildren Nathan, Kayla, Jillian, Taylor and Amber, all of Kensington, and several nieces and nephews. Services will Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at 9am from Purter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Hwy. in Kensington, followed by a funeral liturgy at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Church in Kensington. Burial will follow in Maple cemetery in Berlin. Dr. Joseph Francis Scholand
KENSINGTON - Dr. Joseph Francis Scholand, 62, of Orchard Road, husband of Clare Scholand, died Saturday night (January 25, 2003) at his home with his family at his side. Born in Rochester, New York, the son of the late Francis and the late Coletta Scholand, he received his Bachelor's degree from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, served as a physician in the US Army Medical Corps in Vietnam, served his internship and residency at Ohio State University Hospital, and received Board Certification in Infectious Diseases. He joined Grove Hill Clinic in August, 1973, in Internal Medicine with Infectious Diseases sub-specialty, and was a member of the Hartford County Medical Association. He was an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in New Britain since 1975 where he held numerous positions within the Parish, including Parish Council president, St. Joseph's School Board president, founder and chairman of St. Joseph's Bingo Committee, chairman of the Arch Diocesan School Board, and Lector and Eucharistic Minister in the Parish, and served on the PTA of both Mercy and Xavier High School in Middletown. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. Andrew and Karen Scholand of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dr. Stephen Scholand of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Michael and Jane Scholand of Falls Church, Virginia, a daughter and son-in-law, Fiona and Bradley Evans in central Asia, three brothers, Francis Scholand of Rochester, New York, Martin Scholand of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, and David Scholand of Fredonia, New York, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Liturgy will be held Friday (January 31, 2003) at 10 a.m. directly at St. Joseph's Church, 195 South Main Street, New Britain. Interment in Rochester, New York, will be at the convenience of the family. Stella Barbara Seich
KENSINGTON - Stella Barbara Seich 82, of 85 Ellsworth Blvd., died Wednesday (July 4, 2001) at a local convalescent home after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Michael Seich. Born in New Britain, she graduated from New Britain High School. Resident of Kensington since 1948. She was formerly employed at American Paper Goods, as a bank clerk at Federal Savings Bank of New Britain and Berlin Savings Bank. Member of St., Paul’s Church in Kensington, Ladies League of Timberlin Golf Club, A.A.R.P. and an active bridge player. She is survived by two sons, Michael and Richard both of Kensington, two great-grand children Karley and Richard Skwiot. Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, 2001 at 9:15 am from Porter’s Funeral Service with a funeral liturgy at 10 am. at St. Paul’s Church in Kensington. Burial will be in Maple cemetery in Berlin. MILDALE – Eric Michael Shaw, 33, of Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike in the Milldale section of Southington, died unexpectedly Friday (August 24, 2001) at home. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was most recently employed at Mid-State Manufacturing Co. He is survived by two daughters, Kendra and Hailie Shaw of Kensington, his mother, Jane (Soden) Shaw of Milldale, his father, Robert Shaw of Rome, Pennsylvania, a brother, Brian Shaw in South Carolina, two sisters, Julie Dyson of Southington, and Pamela Shaw of West Springfield, Massachusetts, and two nieces. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 10am in Maple cemetery on Worthington Ridge in Berlin. Friends and relatives are invited to call at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Hwy. in Kensington on Monday from 4-7pm.
