JOSEPH A. ZAUTRA
Joseph A. Zautra, 85, of Percival Avenue, died unexpectedly on Nov. 22 [2002].
Born in Nashua, N.H., he is survived by his wife, Anne Mary (Satkowsky) and was the son of the late Anthony J. and Anelia Axton.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Church, New Britain, the Mr. and Mrs. Club of St. Andrew’s Church and was a reader at St. Andrew’s Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Anthony Joseph Zautra of Kensington, Alexander John Zautra of Arizona and Joseph J. and Sandra Zautra of Hamden; a daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Wayne Croft of New York City; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Croft; and two grandsons, Nicky and Nathan Zautra.
Services were held on Nov. 25 at Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, Kensington, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Paul’s Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Nashua, N.H.

VERONICA C. TESSMAN
Veronica C. (Bochan) Tessman, 59, of Lower Lane, wife of Albert A. Tessman Sr., died on Nov. 23 [2002] at New Britain General Hospital.
A native of Berlin, the daughter of Peter and the late Lottie (Cieniewicz) Bochan, she graduated from Berlin High School, and was employed at Webster Bank. She was a member of St. Paul's Church.
In addition to her husband and her father, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Albert A Tessman Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Berlin; a daughter, Tara Tessman of Berlin; a brother, David Bochan of Higganum; a sister, Madeline Kowalski of Westbrook; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Nov. 27 from Porter's Funeral Home, Kensington, with a funeral liturgy at St. Paul's Church. Burial followed in Maple Cemetery.
Those who wish may make donations in her memory to: American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., P.O. Box 1004, Meriden 06450-1004.

DORIS G. TILLMAN
Doris (Gosselin) Tillman, 75, of Berlin died on Nov. 26 [2002] at Ridgeview Healthcare Center, Cromwell.
Born in Hartford, she was a former New Britain resident, moving to Berlin in 1966. She worked at D&L stores for 10 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, New Britain, and AARP.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Arnold E. Tillman; a son, Arnold M. Tillman and his wife, Bonnie, of New Britain; three daughters, Kathleen Cahill and her husband, William of Cedar Lake, Ind., Karen Montana and her husband, Peter of Southington, and Laura Michaud and her husband, Lenny, of Berlin; three sisters, Shirley Willametz of Berlin, Betty Keehner and her husband, William, of Manchester, and Arlene Campanelli of Colchester; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Brian Letendre; two brothers, Henry and Conrad Gosselin; and three brothers-in-law, William Willametz, Arthur Campanelli and Bernard VonHone.
Funeral services were held on Nov. 30 at First Lutheran Church. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain, was in charge of arrangements.

FLORENCE PICKETT
Florence (Skinner) Pickett, 102, died on Jan. 21 [2003]. She was the widow of Edgar Pickett. She was born in Berlin on Jan. 19, 1901. She was a member of the Congregational Church of Plainville.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Donald Emery of Plainville; two grandchildren, David Emery of Plainville and Elaine Morse of Bristol; two great-grandchildren; and six nieces and six nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Malcolm Pickett, a daughter, Charlotte Emery, and all 10 of her brothers and sisters.
A memorial service was held at the Congregational Church of Plainville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Bailey Funeral Home, Plainville, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to: Congregational Church of Plainville, 130 West Main St, Plainville 06062.

GRACE L. HIRCZY
Grace Lenore (Young) Hirczy, 85, of Cold Spring Road, Rocky Hill, formerly of Berlin, the widow of William Hirczy, died on Jan. 25 [2003] at New Britain General Hospital.
Born in New Britain, the daughter of the late William and the late Albina (Higgins) Young, she graduated from New Britain High School, was employed at North and Judd Manufacturing Co. until her retirement and was a member of Berlin Congregational Church.
She is survived by a sister, Esther Coleman of Southington; and several nieces and nephews and their spouses, Judy and Andy Devokaitis of Southington, Jane and Bruce Stevens of Rocky Hill and their son, Mike; a daughter-in-law, Heather, and daughter, Sarah, Jacqueline Whitney Coffey, Carol Coleman Skwiot, Lawrence and Barbara Jennings, Bert, Bill and Warren Young Jr. of Maryland, and Susan and John McDonnell in Arizona.
A funeral service was held Jan. 30 at Porter's Funeral Home, Kensington. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery, New Britain.

JOSEPH F. SCHOLAND
Dr. Joseph Francis Scholand, 62, of Orchard Road, husband of Clare Scholand, died on Jan. 25 [2003] at his home with his family at his side.
Born in Rochester, N.Y., the son of the late Francis and the late Coletta Scholand, he received his bachelor's degree from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, served as a physician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam, served his internship and residency at Ohio State University Hospital and received board certification in infectious diseases. He joined Grove Hill Clinic in August 1973, in internal medicine with infectious diseases sub-specialty, and was a member of the Hartford County Medical Association. He was an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in New Britain since 1975 where he held numerous positions within the parish, including Parish Council president, St. Joseph's School Board president, founder and chairman of St. Joseph's Bingo Committee, chairman of the Arch Diocesan School Board, and lector and eucharistic minister in the parish, and served on the PTA of both Mercy and Xavier High schools in Middletown.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. Andrew and Karen Scholand of Albuquerque, N.M., Dr. Stephen Scholand of Philadelphia, Pa., and Michael and Jane Scholand of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Fiona and Bradley Evans in central Asia; three brothers, Francis Scholand of Rochester, Martin Scholand of East Berlin, Pa. and David Scholand of Fredonia, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral liturgy was held on Jan. 31 at St. Joseph's Church. Interment in Rochester will be at the convenience of the family. Porter's Funeral Home, Kensington, was in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM C. POPPEL
William Charles Poppel, 79, of Old Saybrook, died on July 5 [2003] at Gladeview Convalescent Home in Old Saybrook after a short illness.
Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late William and Ruth (Olson) Poppel. He was a former Kensington resident before moving to Old Saybrook 40 years ago. He was formerly employee for many years at SNET before retirement. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a tail gunner.
Surviving are two sisters, Marcelyn King of Plainville, and Marguerite Defanti of Wells, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Clifford Poppel and Philip Poppel.
A graveside service, with military honors will be held at West Lane cemetery at the convenience of the family. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, New Britain, is in charge of arrangements.
