Rosemary Chaillou, 84, was Sherman resident
Rosemary W. Chaillou, 84, of Sherman, died Dec. 30 at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California after a brief illness. She was the widow of Pierre M. Chaillou. They had settled in Sherman in 1966.
She had been visiting family at the time of her death.
Mrs. Chaillou was born May 6, 1915, in New York City. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Sherman, where she was active in many of the church organizations.
She is survived by three sons, Richard Chaillou of New Jersey, Bruce Chaillou of New Milford and Robert Chaillou of California; two daughters, Rosemary DePaola of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Denise Carter of California; three sisters; a brother; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial Mass tomorrow (Saturday) at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Sherman. Father David J. Riley, former pastor of Holy Trinity Church, will officiate.

Thomas Wallian, 62, was longtime Bridgewaterite
Thomas Joseph Wallian, 62, of Chestnut Tree Hill Road Extension, Oxford, formerly of Bridgewater, the husband of Megan Maloney Wallian, died unexpectedly Dec. 27 at Danbury Hospital.
He was born in Northville July 5, 1937, the son of the late Harold S. and Mary Dunn Wallian.
Mr. Wallian was a leadman in the computerized numerical control operations of Teknicircuits Inc. of Danbury and was a 29-year employee of the company. He was the company's first employee when it was started and was a most valued member of the staff.
Mr. Wallian was a United States Air Force veteran. He was a resident of Oxford for three months and previously resided in Bridgewater for 40 years.
Mr. Wallian is survived by his wife, Megan; three daughters, Catherine Wallian Flynn of Bridgewater, Joan Wallian of Jamestown, R.I., and Erin Wallian of Danbury; a sister, Sally Wallian of Canton, Mass.; two grandsons, Brian and Michael Flynn of Bridgewater; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Sue Pitchard and Polly Wallian.

Carl Trenck Jr., 56, father of New Milford man
Carl Peter Trenck Jr., 56, of Beech Tree Road, Brookfield, died Dec. 30 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Anne K. (Feeley) Trenck.
Mr. Trenck was born Dec. 2, 1943, in Far Rockaway, N.Y., a son of the late Carl P. and Leona (Gipson) Trenck Sr.
He was an area resident most of his life and a resident of Brookfield since 1972. He was employed as a manufacturing engineer at Pitney Bowes for several years before retiring nine years ago. He enjoyed fishing.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Trenck is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Trenck and his wife, Kim, of New Milford and Robert and his wife, Theresa, of Bethel; four grandchildren, Amanda, Jessalyn, Kristina and Peter; a brother, Raymond Trenck of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Virginia Marsh of Brookfield; an aunt, Evelyn Robinson of Long Island; and cousins.

Janet Schaniel, 65, mother of New Milfordite
Janet D. Schaniel, 65, of Patterson, N.Y., died Dec. 28 at Glen Hill Harborside Convalescent Center in Danbury.
Mrs. Schaniel was born May 1, 1934, in Brewster, N.Y., to Charles and Mamie (Hyatt) Cable. She had attended schools in Brewster.
Mrs. Schaniel married James E. Schaniel Sr. on June 20, 1954, in Brewster. Mr. Schaniel died on April 10, 1995.
Mrs. Schaniel was a homemaker and resident of the Danbury area for 35 years and had lived in Brewster all her life prior.
She is survived by six sons, Eugene A. Schaniel of Bethel, James E. Schaniel Jr. of Speedway, Ind., Richard L. Schaniel of New Milford, William G. and Joseph D. Schaniel, both of Patterson, and Edward L. Schaniel of Danbury; a daughter, Connie D. Keeler of Carmel, N.Y.; three brothers, Walter Cable of Brewster, Harold Cable of California and James Cable of Wassaic, N.Y.; two sisters, Marion Ercole of Holmes, N.Y., and Nancy Sheltra of Danbury; 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Anthony Kaplanis, 73, was born in New Milford
Anthony N. Kaplanis, 73, of 12 Claremont Ave., Danbury, husband of Nitsa (Frangakis) Kaplanis, died unexpectedly in Danbury Dec. 28.
He was born in New Milford May 9, 1926, son of the late Nicholas and Anastasia (Nicholas) Kaplanis.
A Danbury resident for most of his life, he was a graduate of Henry Abbott Technical School in Danbury.
Mr. Kaplanis was a World War II Navy veteran and as a young man had worked as a toolmaker at G-P Tool Company in Danbury. He later managed the Newtown A.G. Market, and prior to his retirement five years ago, he had worked at the Eaton Corporation in Danbury.
He was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Danbury, had served on the parish council and had also served as president of that organization. He was also an avid sports fan.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Kaplanis is survived by three sons, Nicholas Kaplanis and Stephen Kaplanis, both of Danbury, and Father Paul Kaplanis of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Peter Kaplanis of Sun City, Ariz.; a sister, Bessie Harrison of Danbury; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Matthew, Nicole, Christopher, Lauren, Michael, Katrina and Christina; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Salem, 56, father of New Milford man
Robert J. Salem, 56, of Racebrook Drive, Bethel, died Dec. 30 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Judy Cheng Salem.
Mr. Salem was born in Danbury May 16, 1943, son of the late Joseph and Pearl Ephrem Salem.
He was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1961, and Norwalk State Technical School. He also graduated from Monmouth College with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
After working for Bell Laboratories and General Electric, he started his own research and development company, M.I.T. Development Company in Wilton. At the time of his death, he was president of Applied Science Corporation, vice president of M.I.T. Development Corporation and a member of the Board of Directors of Home Diagnostics, Inc.
Mr. Salem holds more than 15 patents, including a smoke alarm, blood platelet and heart and respiratory monitor technologies.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Christopher R. Salem of Danbury and Jeffrey T. Salem of New Milford; a daughter, Alice Salem van Deraue of Amsterdam, Holland; a brother, Richard A. Salem of New Fairfield; a sister, Cynthia J. Grimm of Bethel; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth P. Salem.

George Sfaelos, 32, graduate of New Milford High
Gregory Sfaelos, 32, of Princeton Drive, Macon, Ga., and formerly of Danbury, died Dec. 19 in Macon.
Mr. Sfaelos was born in New York City June 20, 1967, the son of Maria (Kroloka) Sfaelos of Port Arthur, Texas, and the late Andrew Sfaelos.
He was a graduate of New Milford High School and Florida Engineering Institute in Orlando and did graduate studies in chemical engineering at LaMarr University, Port Arthur.
He was employed as a chemist for the Brown and Williamson Company of Macon.
Besides his mother, Mr. Sfaelos is survived by his brothers, Constantinos Sfaelos of Southbury, Danny Sfaelos of Danbury and James Sfaelos of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Angelika Sfaelos of Port Arthur; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury, today (Friday) at 9:30 a.m.

Henry F. Becker, 86, had been longtime leader in Bridgewater
Henry F. (Hank) Becker, 86, beloved husband of Jane Readyoff Becker, died peacefully at his home in Bridgewater Jan. 21.
One of the town's most well-known public figures, he was first selectman from 1967 to 1979 (see story, Page S18). He was a primary initiator of the town hall renovation, the construction of off-street parking and the development of a 34-acre recreational area.
He was a strong supporter of the regional school concept, which he felt benefited Bridgewater.
"I enjoyed being of some service to the town and donating whatever talent I have to serve the people of Bridgewater," Mr. Becker said in 1979, when reflecting upon his 12 years as the town's chief executive and his four years as selectman before that.
He then promised to be around to help the new first selectman during the transition. "I will stay involved as a citizen because I'm still interested. But I won't try to exert any of my feelings or pressure," Mr. Becker said, winking. "I've had my day."
Mr. Becker was born in Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., July 3, 1912, a son of the late Edward and Sophie Schlichting Becker. He had lived in Bridgewater since 1956, moving from Bellmore, N.Y.
In his early years, Mr. Becker had been a singer with the Fred Waring Glee Club. He had been a soloist for many area churches and synagogues, as well as singing at many community events, especially the annual tree-lighting ceremony in Bridgewater.
He had been a landscape gardener, and for many months had owned and operated Meadowview Nursery in Bridgewater. He also operated Bridgewater Realty as a sideline out of his home for many years.
He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford and a member of the Bridgewater Grange and the Bridgewater Historical Society. He was a devoted fan of his grandchildren's sports teams.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, of 57 years; a daughter and a son-in-law, Jane and Dan Storrs; and two grandchildren, Ben and Whitney Storrs, all of Bridgewater. He is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Florence Trutner of Riverhead, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Edith Readyoff of Bridgewater; and several nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Becker.
Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in South Cemetery, Bridgewater, in the spring.

Marie Carlson, 82, mother of New Milford woman
Marie Ebel Carlson, 82, a resident of Georgetown for 62 years, died Jan. 20 at the Bethel Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Walfred V. Carlson, who died in 1995.
Mrs. Carlson was born in the Bronx, N.Y., March 14, 1916, a daughter of the late William and Mary Jones Ebel.
During World War II she worked at Gilbert and Bennett Wire Mill in Georgetown and later assisted in the care of children for many families in the local area.
Mrs. Carlson was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown and was a founding member and past president of its Rosary Society.
She is survived by two sons, Walter Carlson of Newtown and Ronald Carlson of Georgetown; a daughter, Susan Wiston of New Milford; two sisters, Lillian Meyer and Madeline Bonelli, both of Long Island; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
