Maria Gentile, 35, was sister of local residents
Maria Gentile, 35, of Vermont, formerly of New Fairfield, died July 23 in a car accident in Vermont.
Ms. Gentile was the daughter of Michael and Paula (Autuore) Gentile of Brattleboro, Vt.
She was the director of New Heights in Danbury until she moved to Vermont last fall. She helped create New Heights, a center for people with mental illness, two years ago.
She appeared last summer on television in “20/20” to discuss her own mental disorder. At that time she was known by her married name, Maria Urban.
Besides her parents, Ms. Gentile is survived by two brothers, Michael of Ridgefield and Sam of New Milford; two sisters, Michelle Tevolini of Vernon and Melissa Delelle of New Milford; and two nephews and a niece.
A memorial service at New Heights is being planned for this month.

Mary M. Wilbur, 81, had been a resident of Kent
Mary M. Wilbur, 81, of 15 Johnson Road, Kent, died July 27 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the widow of Melvin Wilbur.
Mrs. Wilbur was born April 19, 1921, in Albany, N.Y., daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Welder) Cusack.
She is survived by a son, George of Calabassa, Calif.; a daughter, Sharlene Pond of New Preston; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Robert.

George Nemence Sr., 89, was born in Washington
George J. Nemence Sr., 89, of 66 Holmes Ave., Waterbury, died July 21 at Beacon Brook Health Center in Naugatuck.
Mr. Nemence was born May 10, 1913, in Washington, son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Sellar) Nemence.
He worked at the Scovill tube mill in New Milford. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 224th Airborne Medical Company in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received a Distinguished Unit Badge, Bronze Star and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon.
He is survived by a son, George Jr. of Waterbury; a daughter, Candice Englehardt of Waterbury; a brother, Victor of Waterbury; a sister, Grace Swift of Matamoras, Pa.; a granddaughter; and three great-grandsons.

Patricia Ann Conklin, 49, active in New Milford PTO
Patricia Ann Conklin, 49, of 9 Steven Court, New Milford, died July 27 at New Milford Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of James Conklin.
Mrs. Conklin was born Dec. 4, 1952, in Wichita Falls, Texas, a daughter of Mary Ella (Countrymen) Martin of Kingston, N.Y., and the late Eugene B. Hannay Sr.
She spent her early years in Kingston and graduated from Kingston High School in 1970. She moved to the New Milford area in 1986 and was an active member of the New Milford PTO.
Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons, Eric and Bryan of New Milford; three brothers, Eugene Hannay Jr. of Marlborough, Mass., Steven Hannay of Shelton and Leroy Martin Jr. of Kingston; a sister, Cynthia Harkins of Kingston; three nieces; and three nephews.

John F. Mrazik, 73, was father of New Milford man
John F. Mrazik, 73, of 357 Scott St., Naugatuck, died July 24 at his home. He was the husband of Emily (Poplawski) (Nitowski) Mrazik.
Mr. Mrazik was born May 27, 1929, in Waterbury, son of the late Frederick and Elsa (Barnes) Mrazik.
He was a Marine Corps veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 17 in Naugatuck. He retired in 1994 as maintenance electrician from Heritage Village in Southbury.
Besides his wife, Mr. Mrazik is survived by two sons, Philip of New Milford and Ronald Nitowski of Noblesville, Ind.; two daughters, Diane Santopietro of Cheshire and Janice Gruenwald of New Haven; a brother, Frederick of Englewood, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John.

John Holmes Sr., 68, was father of Sherman man
John Holmes Sr., 68, of Great Plain Road, Danbury, died July 29 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Helen (Hanson) Holmes.
Mr. Holmes was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Redding, a son of the late Henry T. and Selma (Holmstrom) Holmes.
He attended Henry Abbott Regional Technical School in Danbury and had been a resident of Danbury for the past 47 years.
He was an electrician and worked for the former Basher Electric in Danbury.
He was a member of the IBEW Local No. 488. He attended the First Congregational Church in Danbury and was a former Boy Scout and adult volunteer in Boy Scouting.
Besides his wife, Mr. Holmes is survived by a son, John Jr. of Sherman; two daughters, Cindy Tyrseck of Danbury and Belinda Battista of Southbury; five sisters, Selma Woodin of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lillian Cyr and Lorraine Scott of Danbury, Hilda Carlson of Georgetown and Elizabeth Van Deusen of Columbus, S.C.; four grandchildren, Brian Tyrseck, Andrew Holmes and Sam and Alec Battista; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and MacAdam.

Rosemary L. Schein, 52, sister of local woman
Rosemary L. (Gaboardi) Schein, 52, of 768 Stanford Lane, Carol Stream, Ill., died July 18 at her home. She was the wife of Steven Schein.
Mrs. Schein was born March 30, 1950, in Danbury, daughter of Theodore Gaboardi and the late Louise Gaboardi.
She graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School and from Danbury High School. She received two degrees in business management from the College of DuPage in Illinois. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Besides her husband and father, she is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Donald Ukers Jr. of New Milford; a nephew, Donald Ukers III of Meriden; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Virginia Gall, 89, was mother of New Milfordite
Virginia LeCompte (Bohl) Gall, 89, died July 25 at New Milford Hospital. She was the widow of Karl Gall.
Mrs. Gall was born Aug. 16, 1912, in Bridgeport, daughter of the late Herman and Aline (LeCompte) Bohl.
She was a member and past president of the Torrington Women’s Club and Ladies Aid Society of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She is survived by a son, Charles of Newark, Calif.; a daughter Virginia Flynn of New Milford; a sister, Marie Jacobus of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Norman.

Gloria Henriques, 94, former New Milford resident
Gloria R. Henriques, 94, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of New Milford, died July 17. She was the widow of Jeffrey Henriques.
She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Jr. of New Milford and Peter of Fairfax, Va.; twin daughters, Judith Pierce of Wilmington, N.C., and Gloria Patterson of Aloha, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A private memorial will be held in the fall.
Stanley H. Peterson, 90, father of Washingtonian
Stanley H. Peterson, 90, of Goshen Road, Litchfield, died July 30 at Rose Haven in Litchfield. He was the widower of Virginia R. Peterson.
Mr. Peterson was born June 28, 1912, in Washington, son of the late J. David and Alfrida (Zetterquist) Peterson.
He was raised in Washington and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He worked for Landis Tool Co. in Pennsylvania and the Torrington Manufacturing Co. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and a member and volunteer of the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society.
Mr. Peterson is survived by two daughters, Susan of Litchfield and Linda Potter of Washington; and three grandsons.

Edith Camp, 81, was a longtime Kent resident
Edith (Olsen) Camp, 81, of 55 Camps Road, Kent, died Aug. 4 at the Kent, Specialty Care Facility. She was the wife of William O. Camp Sr.
Mrs. Camp was born May 28, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late Gustav and Anna (Sutherland) Olsen.
She spent her early years in New York and had been a resident of Kent since 1940.
She was a member of New Preston Congregational Church, New Preston Womans Fellowship, Eastern Star of Kent and Kent Grange No. 154.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Camp is survived by two sons, William Jr. of Kent and Robert of Gilmanton, N.H.; and two grandchildren.

Michael Chere, 85, was brother of New Milfordite
Michael Chere, 85, died July 31 in Florida. He was a custom upholsterer in Oxford for 25 years before moving to New Port Richey, Fla., 18 years ago.
Mr. Chere was born March 1, 1917, in New York City. He served in the Army and attained the rank of sergeant. He fought in both the Pacific and European theaters and received two Bronze Stars.
Mr. Chere is survived by two sons, Gregory and Mitchel of Watertown; two brothers, Harold Cherry of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Walter Cherewatuk of New Milford; a sister, Natalie Sobchack of Flushing, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
