Garrett Monteleone, infant son of Washingtonians
Garrett Robert Monteleone of West Morris Road, Washington, died at birth July 29 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. He was the son of Frank J. Monteleone III and Patience Kane.
Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Serena Morrison of Washington; his paternal and maternal grandparents; and his paternal and maternal great-grandparents.

Graveside services for Hannah (Hipp) Smigala, who died March 10, will be held today (Friday) at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Danbury.
Mrs. Smigala, 93, of Butter Brook Hill Apartments, New Milford, was the widow of Arnold Smigala.
She was born April 20, 1908, in New Milford, daughter of the late Ludwig and Christine (Maute) Hipp
She spent her early life in New Milford, lived in Danbury for many years and returned to New Milford in 1980. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Milford.
She is survived by two sons, William of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and John of Las Vegas, Nev.

Anna Hagstrom, 93, was a native of Bridgewater
Anna Margaret Hagstrom, 93, of 1 Birchwood Lane, New Milford, died Sept. 19 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center, New Milford. She was the widow of Elmer H. Hagstrom and the late Stanley Thomas.
Mrs. Hagstrom was born Sept. 29, 1908, in Bridgewater, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Sheskey) Pruchnik.
She was a 60-year employee at Young’s Hotel in New Milford, where she started working at age 13. She was also a drill press operator during World War II.
She is survived by five sisters, Josephine Doering of Brookfield, Helen and Blanche Pruchnik of New Milford, Mary Thibault of Waterbury and Julie Espitee of Florida; an aunt, Julia Ferriss of New Milford; seven nephews, Richard Hagstrom of Bridgewater, Joseph Pruchnik of Sherman, Michael Merrill, Richard Espitee, Paul Pruchnik and Frank Pruchnik, all of New Milford, and Charles Thibault of Waterbury; and five nieces, Nancy Macklin of New Fairfield, Mary Elizabeth Sirois of Wolcott, Christine Beard of Virginia, Melissa Pezzolo of New Milford and Alice Miller of Yakima, Wash.

Dorothy Lewis, 81, longtime local bookkeeper
Dorothy P. Lewis, 81, of 113 Grove St., New Milford, died Sept. 18 at New Milford Hospital. She was the widow of Gordon E. Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis was born May 10, 1921, in Canada, daughter of the late William and Margaret (Snetsinger) Penniston.
She was a bookkeeper at the Joseph Golden Department Store in New Milford for 18 years until the store closed in 1970. She then worked as a bookkeeper for Sega Sand and Gravel in New Milford for 14 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Ploof and her husband Roger of New Milford, and Margaret Haller and her husband John of New Milford; a half-brother, William Penniston of New Milford; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Anthony Savage, 85, was father of Washington man
Anthony J. Savage, 85, of Mallory Street, Danbury, died Sept. 18 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Anne M. (Leonard) Savage.
Mr. Savage was born Dec. 26, 1916, in Witherbee, N.Y., son of the late Anthony and Alice (Pilus) Savage.
He attended school in Mineville, N.Y., and settled in Danbury in 1938. Before his retirement, he had worked for SNET for 33 years.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a master sergeant in the South Pacific. He was a charter member of the Marine Corps League, Hat City Marine Detachment. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Besides his wife, Mr. Savage is survived by three daughters, Joan of Milford, Mary Anne McKenna and her husband Donald of New Milford, and Kathleen Baker and her companion Jack McCartin of Brewster, Mass.; a son, John and his wife Patricia Farrell of Washington; four grandchildren, Zachary, Eli and Kathryn Baker and Molly Farrell-Savage; a great-grandson, Ian Baker-Franzen; two brothers, William and Benjamin of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Roach, 88, was mother of New Milford man
Mary B. (Ryan) Roach, 88, of Mansfield Avenue, Waterbury, died Sept. 24 at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was the widow of Elmer J. Roach.
Mrs. Roach was born July 13, 1914, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Connor) Ryan.
She attended local schools and graduated from Waterbury Catholic High School. She was a longtime employee of the Colonial Bank and Trust Company in Waterbury. She was a communicant of Saints Peter and Paul Church.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Leslee of Cheshire and James and Fran of New Milford; two sisters, Emeline McCabe of Waterbury and Rita Pelletier of Hopey Sound, Fla.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Friday) at 9:30 a.m. at the Casey O’Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St., Waterbury, and continue on to SS Peter and Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Road, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial with will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
Helen R. Burns, 76, mother of New Milford man
Helen R. Burns, 76, of Largo, Fla., died Sept. 4 at her home. She was the widow of Paul Burns.
Mrs. Burns was born April 20, 1926, in Worcester, Mass. She lived most of her life in Bethel before moving to Florida in 1989.
She was a registered nurse at Danbury Hospital for more than 20 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Stevenson of Largo and Barbara Seifert of Indian Rock Beach, Fla.; a son, Paul of New Milford; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Swanson, 72, was lifelong area resident
Richard A Swanson, 72, of Morris, formerly of Washington, died Sept. 18 at his home. He was the husband of Marilyn (Cuddy) Swanson.
Mr. Swanson was born July 31, 1930, in New Milford, the son of the late Gustaf A. and Dorothy (Sniffin) Swanson.
He was a graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1948. He attended Springfield College and served in the U.S. Army.
He was a construction superintendent for many area construction projects. He was a talented all-around athlete and was drafted by the Yankees as a young man. He was also an avid fisherman.
Besides his wife, Mr. Swanson is survived by a son, Richard Jr. of Las Vegas; a daughter, Pamela Jones of Woodbury; and two cousins, David of Washington and Sandra Reidy of Woodbridge.

John H. Zerrenner, 77, grandfather of local man
John (Jack) Herman Zerrenner, 77, of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., formerly of New Fairfield, died Sept. 15. He was the widower of Eileen Helen (Ryan) Zerrenner.
Mr. Zerrenner was born July 19, 1925, in Bronx, N.Y., the son of Herman and Catherine Zerrenner.
He attended New York City schools. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. In the early 1950s, he was a police officer for the St. Petersburg Police Department and owned and operated Zerrenner’s Garage in St. Petersburg.
He moved back to New York, where he was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation, then moved with his family to New Fairfield, where he owned and operated Zerrenner’s Auto Service.
Mr. Zerrenner is survived by a daughter, Mary Johnson and her husband Ronald of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sons, Brian and his wife Elisa, George and his wife Linda, and John and his wife Barbara, all of New Fairfield; five grandchildren, Brian Jr. of New Milford and Kerry, Corrine, Eileen and Priscilla of New Fairfield; a great-granddaughter, Morgan of New Fairfield; a sister, Peggy Gallagher of Long Island; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Raymond J. Leroux, 80, was father of Warren man
Raymond J. Leroux, 80, of 75 Norway St., Oakville, died Sept. 18 at Valerie Manor in Torrington. He was the widower of Claire T. (Gauthier) Leroux.
Mr. Leroux was born June 17, 1922, in Manchester, N.H., son of the late Romeo and Adele (Boudreau) Leroux.
He was raised in Manchester and attended schools there. He later moved to Lowell, Mass., where he attended high school.
In 1948, he moved to Connecticut and lived in the Waterville section of Waterbury for eight years. He then moved to Oakville, where he lived for 48 years.
He was a welder for the former Chase Brass and Copper Co. of Waterbury for 23 years. He also worked at Anaconda American Brass Co., Ansonia.
Mr. Leroux enjoyed fishing and bowling and belonged to the Thursday Night Fun Bowling League in Thomaston. He was a communicant of St. Mary Magdalen Church in Oakville.
He is survived by a son, Raymond of Warren; two daughters, Elaine of Oakville and Louise Layton of Plymouth; a brother, Dick Gilbert of Lowell; and three grandchildren.

Ruth Brown, 83, mother of New Milford woman
Ruth C. (Greenslit) Brown, 83, of 78 Kendall Road, Holden, Mass., died Sept. 18 at UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus. She was the widow of Leon A. Brown.
Mrs. Brown was born March 18, 1919, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Carl L. and Pauline A. (Paine) Greenslit.
She had lived in Holden since 1951. She graduated from North High School and worked in central services for Clark University in Worcester. She taught rug braiding and quilting for many years, including through the Wachusett Adult Education Program.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald Flodman of Exeter, N.H., and Robert of Wareham, Mass.; a daughter, Susan Metcalf of New Milford; a brother, Donald Greenslit of Paxton, Mass.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda.
