Lillian Allen, 84, was mother of local woman
Lillian Lee Wey Allen, 84, of Trumbull died Dec. 12 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. She was the widow of the late Donald Allen.
Mrs. Allen was born in Bristol and had been a lifelong area resident. She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and the Bridgeport Engineering Institute.
After graduation, she was an assistant engineer for the General Electric Co. She was active with the Easton Seniors and the Monroe Congregational Church.
Mrs. Allen is survived by three sons, David Allen and his wife Kathleen of Trumbull, Colvin Allen of New Milford, and Christopher Allen and his wife Janet of Trumbull; a brother, George Lee Wey of Oaks Bluff, Mass.; and three granddaughters, Kelly, Dana, and Sarah Allen. She was predeceased by a brother, Howard Lee Wey, and a sister, Elsie Velasco.
The Lesko-Miner Funeral Home in Monroe was in charge of the arrangements.

George J. Wallace, 83, father of New Milfordite
George J. Wallace, 83, a lifelong resident of the Stamford, Darien and Norwalk areas, died Dec. 12 at Norwalk Hospital.
He was born July 14, 1919, in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of the late George Ruthven and Agnes Burns Wallace.
Mr. Wallace was a retired salesman for Gibson Greeting Cards. He was past president of the Stamford Catholic High School Home School Association and a 60-year member of the Noroton Fire Department.
He is survived by a son, James F. Wallace and his wife Susan of Lewes, Del., and a daughter, Mary Ellen Kerr and her husband Mark of New Milford. He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Marie Fox Wallace in 1994.

Phillip Young, 77, father of New Milford woman
Phillip Taylor Young, 77, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, died Dec. 10. He was the husband of Catherine M. Young.
Mr. Young was born March 2, 1925, in Braintree, Mass., son of the late Phillip T. and Helen (Mifflin) Young. He was an Air Force veteran.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and later received a doctorate degree.
He taught at Taft School in Watertown for 14 years, heading the music department, and then taught at the University of British Columbia. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Besides his wife, Mr. Young is survived by three sons, Thomas of Cornwall, James of Waterbury and Phillip of Richardson, Texas; two daughters, Mary of Medford, Mass., and Carol of New Milford; and three grandchildren.
The Care Funeral Home of Victoria was in charge of arrangements.

Donna J. Spaner, 57, was New Milford resident
Donna J. Spaner, 57, of New Milford died Dec. 12 at Norwalk Hospital.
Ms. Spaner was born March 30, 1945, in St. Albans, Vt., a daughter of the late Harold A. and Evelyn M. (Cross) Rice. A resident of New Milford for over 40 years, she was a graduate of the New Milford High School, Class of 1963.
Ms. Spaner was most recently employed by Crystal Restoration Services of Norwalk for the past six years, and was the former proprietor of the Newtown General Store for four years.
In addition, she was employed with RWV Management of Georgetown for a period of 10 years. She was the proprietor of both the Sunshine Pub of New Milford from 1974 through 1980, and the Dairy Queen of Meriden from 1967 through 1974. She was also a member of the Greater Danbury Insurance Women.
Ms. Spaner is survived by two sons, Jonathan S. Spaner and his wife Laura of Fairfax Station, Va., and Jason G. Spaner and his wife Kelli of Danbury; a brother, Derrell Rice of New Milford; three sisters, Sandra Wigglesworth of Holmes, N.Y., Linda Rice of Woodbury and Debra Mozelak of New Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.
The Colonial Funeral Home in New Milford was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian E. Parrish, 97, lived in New Milford
Lillian E. Parrish, 97, of Sullivan Farm, New Milford, died Dec. 15 at Hancock Hall, Danbury.
Mrs. Parrish was born Nov. 15, 1905, in New York City, daughter of the late Arthur and Lillian (Hyde) Lovelace Parrish.
She graduated from high school in Yonkers, N.Y., and was a graduate of Savage School for Physical Education and New York University.
She served for many years as a professional Girl Scout, camp director and had the first Mariner Girl Scout Unit on the East Coast.
She taught physical education in the New York City school system in East New York and Queens. After retirement, she moved to Heritage Village in Southbury, where she lived for 20 years before moving to Danbury. She then moved to New Milford, where she continued to be active in Girl Scouting and was a volunteer at Waterbury and Danbury Hospitals.
Her scouting career spanned more than seven decades.
Mrs. Parrish is survived by a son, Bruce A. Parrish and his wife Joyce (Font) Parrish; a granddaughter Becky Parrish of New Milford; and a sister, Ethel P. Smith of The Homesteads, Newtown, formerly of Bellmore, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Girl Scout Council of Northwestern Connecticut, 26 Prescott, Torrington, CT 06790.

John Kalafus, 76, longtime teacher in Washington
John Kalafus, 76, of Washington died Dec. 10 at Bethel Health Care Rehabilitation Center after a battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Czechoslovakia. He grew up in Pennsylvania, where he graduated from St. Clair High School and Penn State University with a B.S. in forestry.
He later earned his master’s degree from the Yale University School of Forestry. He later attended numerous National Science Foundation summer institutes for teachers at various universities all across the U.S.
Mr. Kalafus was an Army veteran of World War II, seeing action on Okinawa.
After working for several years as a forest ranger in Pennsylvania and Utah, he moved to Washington in 1959 and began his teaching career. He taught physics, chemistry, biology and earth science at the former Washington High School and then at Shepaug Valley High School in Washington.
While teaching in Washington, he coached soccer and attended many athletic events. He also taught one year each in Southbury, France and Iceland.
His interests included hiking with his dogs, skiing, sharing a cup of coffee with friends, expressing his opinion through letters to the editor, and traveling.
He visited exotic places around the world. He was an avid fan of Penn State football and the San Francisco Giants.
Mr. Kalafus is survived by a sister, Mary and her husband John of Pottsville, Pa., and six nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many friends in Washington, where he spent most of his adult life.

Philip Gammon, 68, Gaylordsville resident
Philip A. Gammon, 68, of 39 Gaylord Road, Gaylordsville, died Dec. 8 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford.
Mr. Gammon was born March 19, 1934, in Rockland, Maine, a son of Helen (Hill) Gammon of Gaylordsville and the late Austin E. Gammon.
He graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, completing courses in the school’s vocational agricultural department, in 1952.
He loved animals and enjoyed helping farmers in his spare time. He worked as machinist at Winchester Electronics for many years.
Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery, Warren, Maine, in the spring.

Kathleen Narbutas, 55, had lived in New Milford
Kathleen (Robb) Narbutas, 55, of 92 Shadee Lane, Waterbury, formerly of New Milford, died Dec. 12 at her home. She was the wife of Walter R. Narbutas.
She was born Jan. 29, 1947, in New Milford, daughter of the late Daniel and Doreen (Flynn) Robb. She lived in the New Milford area until moving to Waterbury in 1992.
Besides her husband, she is survived by four sons, Todd Cole of Seattle, Wash., Jason Cole of Dayton, Maine, Simon Cole of New Bridgewater and Benjamin Cole of New Preston; a daughter, Erin Hedden of West Cornwall; a brother, Daniel L. Robb of Kent; and five grandchildren.
The Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford is in charge of the arrangements.

Lewis Barre Jr., 38, was brother of local woman
Lewis Barre Jr., 38, of Hickory Lane, Bethlehem, died Dec. 9 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Gina (Cortigiano) Barre.
Mr. Barre was born April 18, 1964, in Dover, Del., son of Lewis and Patricia (Bell) Barre Sr. of Woodbury.
He was on the wrestling team of Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury. He was a former member of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department. He worked at General Welding and Fabrication in Waterbury.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and the outdoors.
Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Barre is survived by two sons, Lewis III and Michael of Bethlehem; six sisters, Brenda Kimberly of New Milford, Sandy Higgins of Woodbury, and Donna Giuffre, Lisa Fraser, Debbie Lynn and Linda Tanuis of Bethlehem; and his grandfather, Joseph Caliento of Wolcott.
The Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere was in charge of arrangements.

Thalia Raymond, 83, grandmother of local man
Thalia Raymond, 83, of Newtown died Dec. 16 at Ashlar of Newtown. She was the wife of the late Elwin Raymond.
She was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Cadosia, N.Y., daughter of the late William and Christie (Bush) Foley. She graduated from schools in Hancock, N.Y.
Mrs. Raymond was a member and past officer of the Order of the Eastern Star in New York.
She is survived by two sons, Lynn Raymond and his wife Luella of New Fairfield, and Dale Raymond of Wingdale, N.Y.; a daughter, Diana Siegmann of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a sister, Joyce of North Carolina; a granddaughter, Brenda Vacca and her husband Michael of Norwalk; and two grandsons, Kenneth Hubbard of New Milford and Jeffrey Conefry of South Carolina. She was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
Funeral services will take place today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in New Fairfield. Burial will follow in Mountainview Cemetery.

John V. Morey, 74, was father of New Milfordite
John Vincent Morey, 74, formerly of Ridgefield, died Dec. 15 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the widower of Katherine Angela (McGrath) Morey.
Mr. Morey was born in Stamford, Oct. 14, 1928. He was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as an air traffic controller in the European theater. He was a Darien police officer for five years and was retired from Southern New England Telephone Co. after 32 years of service.
Mr. Morey received the Bob Scalzo Memorial Award for significant contributions to the Ridgefield Pop Warner League. He was a coach for Ridgefield Little League baseball and girls’ softball for many years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Ridgefield.
Mr. Morey is survived by four sons, Brian V. Morey of Monroe, Jeffrey C. Morey and Douglas J. Morey of Waterbury, and Glenn P. Morey of Guilford; a daughter, Shannon F. Renner of New Milford; a sister, Katherine Deschnow of Winter Springs, Fla.; and a brother, Pat Golden of Dearborn, Mich.

Howard Thompson Sr., 85, lived in Bridgewater
Howard J. Thompson Sr., 85, of Bridgewater died Dec. 12 at his home. He was the widower of Rita (Schneider) Thomspon.
Mr. Thompson was born Dec. 31, 1916, in Kent, a son of the late Morton and Nellie (Kinney) Thompson. He had been a resident of Bridgewater since 1960.
He served in the Army as a member of the 27th Division 105th Infantry Unit during World War II. He received many citations for taking part in the battles of Makin, Majuro, Eniwetok, Saipan and Okinawa. He was a member of the 27th Division Association.
Mr. Thompson worked as a farmer until 1965, when he went to work for the New Milford Foundry, where he worked until his retirement in 1985.
Mr. Thompson is survived by a son, Howard J. Thompson Jr. of Bridgewater; two daughters, Shirley Fabische and her husband Curt of Gaylordsville, and Nancy Susanne Thompson and her fiance Harlan Ford of Danbury; two brothers, John and his wife Jean, and Morton and his wife Pauline; three sisters, Ella, Harriet, and Vivian and her husband Phillip; a grandson, Kurt Fabische, and several nieces and nephews. He
was predeceased by two sisters, Emma and Willie, and
two brothers, Frank and Charlie.
The Colonial Funeral Home in New Milford was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Bridgewater Volunteer Ambulance Service.
