Evelyn Miller, 66, was mother of New Milfordite
Evelyn J. Miller, 66, of Barnum Road, New Fairfield, died Jan. 23 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Robert T. Miller.
Mrs. Miller was born Dec. 19, 1936, in Torrington, daughter of the late Edwin and Helen (Gavel) Jessup.
She grew up in Litchfield and was a graduate of Litchfield High School, Class of 1955. She graduated from Danbury Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.
She had served as a Brownie leader and also as a Sunday School teacher.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Miller is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Szentkuti and her husband Richard of Ridgefield; Kathleen Harper of New Milford, and Elizabeth Silk and her husband Bob of Sharon; nine grandchildren, Charles, Alexandra and Nikole Szentkuti, Grace, Thomas and William Harper, and Glenna, MacKenzie and Brian Silk; five brothers; four sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
The Green Funeral Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Elvira Smith, 92, was mother of Sherman woman
Elvira (Harlow) Smith, 92, died Feb. 2 at The Sarah Pierce in Litchfield. She was the widow of David Graham Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born in Lakeville, Mass., daughter of the late Clyde L. and Elvira (Kelly) Harlow.
She was a descendant of the Mayflower-Myles Standish-a Colonial Dame. She was selected to be a member of the board of the United States Committee for UNICEF and was also mid-west regional director of UNICEF.
She used her degree from Simmons College Prince School of Retailing to promote women’s fashion. After becoming a Realtor, she became the first woman Realtor in Wisconsin and later was the state president of Wisconsin’s Board of Women’s Realtors.
Mrs. Smith was president of her class at Portia Law School, the Auxiliary of Milwaukee Protestant Home for the Aged, Milwaukee College Endowment Association, Milwaukee Charter Women’s Realtors and Albuquerque Newcomers. She was chairperson of Milwaukee’s United Fund drive.
She was a lay reader in the Episcopal Church in Wisconsin, New Mexico and Kentucky, as well as head of the vespers program at Richmond Place, Lexington, Ky., and she was active in women’s Bible studies.
She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Prensner of Sherman; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Prensner of Stamford, Dr. Richard Prensner of Harrisburg, Pa., Catherine Anderson of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Janet Carlson of Kenney Lake, Ark.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at The Sarah Pierce, Litchfield.

William Tanner Jr., 60, father of New Milfordite
William “Bill” E. Tanner Jr., 60, died Feb. 3, 2003 at his home.
Mr. Tanner was born June 22, 1942, in Norwalk, son of the late William E. Sr. and Evelyn F. (Taylor) Tanner.
He attended Norwalk schools and worked for the Raytheon Co. in Norwalk for many years. He settled in Danbury 31 years ago and was currently manager of Bagel Bob’s in Danbury. He attended the Methodist Church and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Redman in Norwalk.
He is survived by a son, William III and his wife Teresa of Danbury; a daughter, Lisa Bonsignore and her husband John of New Milford; four grandchildren, Courtney, William IV and David Tanner and Joseph Bonsignore; four sisters, Frances D’Alessio of Rowayton, Mary Dietzel and Natalie Kenny of Danbury, and Nancie Santo of Naugatuck; three aunts; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan.

Elizabeth Presley, 93, had lived in New Milford
Elizabeth (Humphries) Presley, 93, of New Providence, N.J., formerly of New Milford, died Jan. 31. She was the widow of Maurice C. Presley.
Mrs. Presley was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a homemaker and a resident of New Milford for 40 years.
She was a member of the New Milford Visiting Nurse Association, an advisor and youth counselor with the United Methodist Church in both New Milford and Watertown, and was a member of the New Providence Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Brodeur of New Providence; two sons, Fred and his wife Nancy of Wheaton, Md., and Jack and his wife Sandy of Hollis, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Yetiva Humphries of Manchester, N.H.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held April 5 at United Methodist Church, New Milford.

Theresa Gallinari, 60, was New Milford resident
Theresa M. “Terry” Gallinari, 60, of New Milford died Jan. 31 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of John E. Gallinari.
Mrs. Gallinari was born March 18, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Joseph and Nancy (Barbaro) Olivieri.
She was raised and educated in Brooklyn and moved to Connecticut in 1971. She had resided in New Milford for the past 32 years.
She was employed as a customer service representative for the former New Milford Bank and Trust for 16 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Lakes Roman Catholic Church, New Milford. She enjoyed bowling, jigsaw and crossword puzzles.
Besides her husband Mrs. Gallinari is survived by a son, Jonathan of Peabody, Mass.; a brother, Joseph Olivieri of Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Salvatore Olivieri.

Ruth E. Weiss, 65, had lived in New Milford
Ruth E. Weiss, 65, of New Milford, formerly of Greenwich, died Feb. 3 at Danbury Hospital. She was the widow of Frederick L. Weiss.
Mrs. Weiss was born July 26, 1937, in Greenwich, the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Frances (Anyon) Bates.
She attended Greenwich public schools and had been a resident of New Milford for 14 years. She was employed as a medical secretary for Danbury Hospital.
She is survived by two sons, Fritz of Greenwich and Donald of Brookfield; two daughters, Amy Ostrom of Bethel and Julie Ann Hearty of New Milford; a brother, Bill Bates of Greenwich; a sister, Peggy Bates of California; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Samuel and George Bates.

Evelyn Beck, 77, was an artist and lived in Kent
Evelyn Beck, 77, of Chestnut Grove, Kent, died Jan. 30 at The Kent.
Miss Beck was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Bronx, N.Y., daughter of the late Theodore and Olga Beck.
She worked in retail notably at Saks Fifth Avenue, Manhattan.
She was an artist. She worked in watercolor and mixed media and collage. She was represented by a gallery in Nags Head, N.C.
Miss Beck is survived by a sister, Lorraine Ryan of New Milford.

Gail Bradle, 43, was active in local community
Gail D. Bradle, 43 of New Milford died Jan. 29 at Bethel Health Care Center. She was the wife of Timothy Bradle.
Mrs. Bradle was born April 18, 1959, in Nyack, N.Y., a daughter of Franklin P. and Marjorie (Duff) Cangiano of New City, N.Y.
She was a 1977 graduate of Clarkstown North High School. She had been employed as a special operations manager with IBM for 25 years.
She played an active role in her community as president of the Booster Club for Gymnastics Revolution in Bethel, coordinator of the Relay for Life in New Milford and was a sponsor of the Avon 60-Mile Walk for Cancer Survivors.
Mrs. Bradle participated in mixed league softball, volleyball, skiing and water sports. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, New Milford.
Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by a stepson, Michael in the United States Army stationed in Korea; a son, Timmy; two daughters, Kristen and Jeanna of New Milford; a sister, Carol Piaia of Washingtonville, N.Y.; a niece and a nephew.

Mary Halpin Hoffman, 81, was New Milford teacher
Mary Halpin Hoffman, 81, of Cornwall Road, Warren, died Feb. 3 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of Warren Hoffman.
Mrs. Hoffman was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Chicago, daughter of the late John and Mary McGowan Halpin. She moved from Chicago to Bethel at age 9.
She graduated as valedictorian from Bethel High School, Class of 1938. In 1942, she graduated from Danbury Teacher’s College, now Western Connecticut State University, and did graduate work at New York University and Yale University.
She taught for 11 years in the Bethel school system and for 26 years in the New Milford school system, retiring in 1984. Mrs. Hoffman lived in the Washington-Warren area since her marriage in 1953.
She was a communicant and former trustee of St. Bridget Church, Cornwall Bridge, and member of Kappa Delta Pi, the Connecticut Chapter of the American Association for Retired Teachers, the Morris Chapter of the American Association of Retired Teachers and the Warren Prime Timers.
She is survived by a brother, John Halpin of Mexico, Mo.; four sisters-in-law, Barbara Halpin of Beteendorf, Ia., Natalie Hoffman of Bantam, Ethel Sabia of Goshen and Julie Halpin of Danbury; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and William Halpin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget Church. Burial will take place in the Warren Cemetery in the spring. There are no calling hours.

Elizabeth Wood, 88, was mother of Warren woman
Elizabeth (Wilson) Wood, 88, of Amherst, Mass., died Feb. 4 at The Center for Extended Care. She was the widow of Robert L. Wood.
Mrs. Wood was born April 2, 1914, in Naugatuck, the daughter of the later Claude T. and Elizabeth (Spring) Wilson.
She graduated from St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury. She lived most of her life in Westport, where she volunteered in church and civic activities.
She is survived by a son, Robert and his wife Reenie of Greenfield, Mass.; a daughter, Claudia and her husband Elwood Rahm of Warren; four grandchildren, Jonathan of Montague, Mass., Emily O’Neil of Springfield, Mass., Whitney Rahm of East Longmeadow, Mass., and Heather Heaton of Buckland, Mass.; and a great grandson, Isiah Heaton.

Jeanne Downs, 40, had lived in New Milford
Jeanne Downs, 40, of Willimantic died Feb. 2 at Windham Hospital.
Mrs. Downs was born Sept. 13, 1962, in Danbury, the daughter of June Nash of Willimantic.
She grew up in Danbury and had lived in New Milford and in New Hampshire before moving to Willimantic a year ago.
Besides her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Andrea View of West Lebanon, N.H.; four granddaughters, Autumn Moore, Taylor Raymond, Alexis View and Raivyn View; two stepchildren, Joleen and Jeremy; three brothers, James Moore of Scotland, Conn., John Muhlfeld of Tennessee, and Bill Nash of Florida; and a dear friend, Karen Mock of Danbury.
