William Haupt, 83, was active at American Legion
William E. Haupt, 83, of New Milford died March 23 at New Milford Hospital. He was the widower of Rhoda (Jollmore) Haupt.
Mr. Haupt was born March 16, 1920 in Princeton, N.J., the son of the late Josef and Katharina (Saal) Haupt. He was a nearly lifelong resident of Princeton, moving to New Milford three years ago.
Mr. Haupt served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a life member of the American Legion Princeton Post No. 31 in New Jersey and an honorary member of the American Legion Ezra Woods Post No. 31 in New Milford.
He was employed as a carpenter by Princeton University for 24 years before retiring in 1982.
Mr. Haupt was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Princeton and attended St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Bolster and her husband John of New Milford; and two grandchildren, Christopher William and Ian David Bolster.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Francis. Cremation will take place at the Connecticut Crematory Corporation in Stamford.

Albert Elwell, 84, father of Roxbury veterinarian
Albert W. Elwell, 84, of 200 Litchfield Road, Harwinton, died March 17 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the husband of Ina (Wootton) Elwell.
Mr. Elwell was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Torrington, son of the late Albert H. and Nellie M. (Hinckley) Elwell.
He worked at Berlin Steel for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Connecticut State Police Auxiliary, working out of Troop L in Litchfield. He was a member of Iron Workers Local 15 and 24.
Besides his wife, Mr. Elwell is survived by three sons, Dr. Paul Elwell of Roxbury, Harold Elwell of Waterbury and Dr. James Elwell of Delhi, N.Y.; two daughters, Kay Wistrom of Harwinton and Margaret Vitrano of Burlington; a sister, Marilyn Telensky of Winsted; 13 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Vincent Elsenboss Sr., 75, worked at funeral home
Vincent A. Elsenboss Sr., 75, of Brookfield died March 20 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth Ann (Murphy) Elsenboss.
Mr. Elsenboss was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Brookfield, the son of the late Paul F. and Ruth (Judson) Elsenboss.
He attended the last one-room schoolhouse in the Huckleberry Hill area of Brookfield and was a graduate of the Danbury High School, Class of 1946.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Early in his life, worked in the construction and trucking industry, and the town of Brookfield Highway Department for 17 years.
After retiring from the highway department, Mr. Elsenboss continued to work with his uncle, John Hull Sr., and cousins, Robert and John Hull Jr., at Hull Funeral Service of Danbury, Bethel and New Milford for 29 years until the time of his death.
He also worked part-time at the Highway Market in Brookfield. He was an active member of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, Candlewood Company. He was also a member of the Fairfield County Fire Chiefs’ Emergency Plan. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe.
Besides his wife, Mr. Elsenboss is survived by three sons, Vincent Jr. of Danbury, Michael of Nuremberg, Germany, and Kurt of Thetford, Vt.; three daughters, Laura Ann of Mystic, Kathleen and her husband Rich Mills of Seattle, Wash., and Carina of Salt Lake City, Utah; a grandson, Theo Mills; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, William, Clark and Paul.

Gerald Blanchard, 73, father of New Milford man
Gerald P. Blanchard, 73, of 57 Sleepy Hollow Drive, Danbury, died March 19 at his home. He was the husband of Sheila (McCann) Blanchard.
Mr. Blanchard was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Chazy, N.Y., son of the late Philip and Florence (Ashline) Blanchard. He had been a Danbury resident since 1964.
He was a graduate of Albany High School. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Mr. Blanchard worked for many years as a purchasing manager for the Electrolux Corporation of Old Greenwich. He was a member of St. Joseph Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Bruce and his wife Joann of New Milford; a daughter, Brenda Carter and her husband Mark of Middlebury; two grandchildren, Kimberly Carter and Jessica Blanchard; two sisters, Jean Howe of East Greenbush, N.Y., and Bea Oddy of Buffalo, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Marge Mehleisen.

Gabriel M. Smyrski, 86, was born in South Kent
Gabriel M. Smyrski, 86, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Jan. 30 at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines, Fla. He was the husband of Ethel Smyrski.
Mr. Smyrski was born in South Kent. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War ll, serving in England. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of Knights of Columbus of Pinellas Park. He was a retired real estate agent.
Besides his wife, Mr. Smyrski is survived by three daughters, Saundra Smyrski and Kathy Brown of Pinellas Park and Susan Delp of Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Steven of St Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren; and five great grand children.
Services were conducted by the National Cremation Society of Largo.
Jiri Krten, 68, was a resident of New Milford
Jiri Krten, 68, of 9 Stone Castle Road, New Milford, died March 26 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Olga (Vavrona) Krten.
Mr. Krten was born in Czechoslovakia July 11, 1934, son of the late Vaclav and Anna (Hornikova) Krten. He immigrated to the United States in 1969 after the Soviet invasion of his homeland. He became a U.S. citizen.
Mr. Krten had lived in New Milford since 1973. He was employed for many years as a tool and dye maker with Dictaphone Corporation in Stratford.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jiri Krten Jr. and his wife Kang Sun of New Milford; a grandson, James Krten of New Milford; and a sister, Irena of Rovdnice, Czech Republic.
Funeral services will take place today (Friday) at noon at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 7 Whittlesey Ave., New Milford. There are no calling hours.

Lawrence A. Stone, 69, co-founder of Chuck Wagon
Lawrence Albert Stone, 69, of Marble Dale died April 1 at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Jane (Casey) Stone.
Mr. Stone was born Aug. 27, 1933, in Hartford, son of the late Albert J. and Mabel V. (Hanson) Stone.
He attended schools in Danbury and then attended St. Peter’s High School in Peekskill, N.Y. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Stone had worked at the Southbury Training School. In 1971, he and his wife started the Chuck Wagon Restaurant in Marble Dale. They moved to Marble Dale in 1984 after living in Woodbury for 20 years.
Besides his wife, Mr. Stone is survived by two sons, Kevin and his wife Bridget of New Milford, and Scott and his wife Dawn of Kent; a sister, Carolyn Jackson of Weston; and two grandchildren, Liam and Sean.
A funeral service will be held today (Friday) at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Marble Dale at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Underwood Meadows Cemetery in Washington.
A reception will be held at the Washington Firehouse on Route 47 in Washington following the funeral.

Susan Richmond, 61, longtime New Milford resident
Susan S. Richmond, 61, of New Milford died March 27 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Roger W. Richmond.
Mrs. Richmond was born Aug. 13, 1941, in Neenah, Wis., the daughter of Miriam (Taber) Sensenbrenner of Florida and the late William G. Sensenbrenner. She had been a New Milford resident since 1957.
She was a 1959 graduate of New Milford High School. She and her husband owned the former Railroad Street Photo in New Milford.
Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Richmond is survived by a son, 1st Lt. Timothy Richmond, U.S. Marine Corps of North Carolina; a daughter, Shana of Florida; four brothers, Ted Sensenbrenner of Florida, Doug Sensenbrenner and his wife Leslie of New Milford, Tom Sensenbrenner and his wife Susie of New Milford, and John Sensenbrenner and his wife Sonya of Utah; a sister-in-law, Barbara Revaz of New Milford; and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence Cox, 87, was father of Warren woman
Clarence C. Cox, 87, of Cathole Road, Bantam, died March 31 at Haven Health Care in Torrington. He was the husband of Ruth (Whitehead) Cox.
Mr. Cox was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Slapout, Okla., son of the late Fred and Mathilda (Rossman) Cox.
He was the former owner of Cox’s Garage and later Litchfield Exxon. He was a member of the Bantam Volunteer Fire Department, St. Paul’s Lodge 11 AF & AM, and the Norwestones.
Mr. Cox was an Eagle Scout, a coach in the Tri Town Little League and past president of the Bantam Parent Teacher Association.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert of Binghamton, N.Y., Allan of Thomaston and Loren of Tummerston, Vt.; two daughters, Betty Herbert of Warren and Cindy Iffland of Litchfield; a sister, Ruth Schele of Litchfield; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Gloria West, 65, mother of New Milford woman
Gloria (Shipley) West, 65, of Stratford died March 22 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was the widow of Robert F. West Jr.
Mrs. West was born in Bayonne, N.J., to the late Charles and Mary Shipley.
She was a resident of Stratford for 35 years. She was the cafeteria manager of Bunnell High School.
Mrs. West is survived by three daughters, Ruth Tanner and her husband David of New Milford, Margaret Potts and her husband Frederick of Oxford, and Patricia Violano and her husband William of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Robert III and his wife Penny of Ellington, Fla.; eight grandchildren; a brother, Charles Shipley of New Jersey; three sisters, Kathleen Mattlock and Roselind Shipley of California and Eileen Mary Shipley of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Alice (Monte) Lerz, 77, formerly of Oakville, died March 26 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. She was the widow of Francis X. Lerz Sr.
Mrs. Lerz was born Dec. 10, 1925, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Domenic and Marietta (Amabile) Monte. She was a graduate of Slocum School and attended Wilby High School in Waterbury. She had lived in Oakville since 1941.
Mrs. Lerz is survived by a son, Francis Jr. of Watertown; a daughter, Donna Parent of Washington; two brothers, Raymond and Ronald Monte of Oakville; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
