Harriett Evans, 57, stepmother of resident
Harriett L. (Schirmer) Evans, 57, of Candlewood Park, Danbury, died June 27 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Ronald Evans.
Mrs. Evans was born Nov. 9, 1945, in Danbury, daughter of the late Albert and Gertrude (Lundie) Schirmer.
She was a graduate of Danbury High School and enjoyed arts and crafts.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Evans is survived by a son, Robert Houghtaling Jr. of Spring Hill, Fla.; a daughter, Tracy Coderre, and her husband Brian of Bristol; a stepson, Ronald and his wife Annie Evans of New Milford; two sisters, Joyce and her husband John Kovacs of Spring Hill, Fla., and Gertrude Hulse of Henrietta, Okla.; four brothers, Albert and his wife Kay Schirmer of The Villages, Fla., Richard Schirmer of Danbury, Clifford and his wife Karen Schirmer of Danbury, and Alan and his wife Barbara Schirmer of Danbury; four granddaughters; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas P. Gannon, 87, was former Bridgewater selectman
Thomas P. Gannon, 87, of 79 Main St. North, Bridgewater, died June 4 at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. He was the widower of Margaret (Morris) Gannon.
Mr. Gannon was born March 17, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Walter and Loretta (May) Gannon.
He was a World War II veteran and retired in 1961 from the United States Army after 22 years of service with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In 1964, he started his teaching career at Trumbull High School and the University of Bridgeport, retiring in 1979.
Mr. Gannon was a former chairman of the Bridgewater Democratic Town Committee and a former member of the Bridgewater Board of Selectmen. He was also a member of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment Association.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Jr. and his wife Emily Armstrong of New York City and Bridgewater, and two grandchildren, Brighid and Kevin of New York City and Bridgewater.
A memorial gathering of friends and family will take place at the Bridgewater Grange July 19 at 1 p.m.

Anna M. Striepens, 85, had been active in Sherman
Anna M. Striepens, 85, formerly of Sherman, died July 1 at Wesley Care Center in Charlotte, N.C. She was the widow of Ludwig Widerka and Aloys Striepens.
Mrs. Striepens was born May 23, 1918, in Dattein, Germany, daughter of the late Josef and Anna Recks.
She came to the United States in 1937 and lived in Ridgewood, N.Y. She was active in the PTA and the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Workman’s Benefit Fund.
Mrs. Striepens later moved to Candlewood Echoes in Sherman and was active in the Sherman Congregational Church, the New Fairfield chapter of AARP, FISH, the Sherman Commission on Aging, Candlewood Echoes Association and Friendly Service.
She volunteered at the Sherman School and Sherman Historical Society and received an honor from Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Striepens is survived by a son, Louis Widerka of Glendale, N.Y.; a daughter, AnnaMarie and her husband George Wiesehahn of Concord, N.C.; a sister, Gerda of Germany; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Gail R. Heneghan, 59, was sister of Sherman man
Gail (Russell) McCarroll Heneghan, 59, of 72 Alpine Circle, Sandy Hook, died July 6 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Michael J. Heneghan.
Mrs. Heneghan was born Jan. 13, 1944, in Mahopac, N.Y., daughter of the late Robert L. and Ella Fern (Willett) Russell.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Timothy McCarroll and Michael of Sandy Hook; three daughters, Tracy Fisher of Sandy Hook, Terry of Brookfield and Tara Ferris of Newtown; a brother, Richard Russell of Sherman; three sisters, Lynn Manville of Southbury, Terry Koval of Thomaston and Cindy Edmond of Watertown; and five grandchildren, Dylan Tambascio of Newtown, T.J. Fisher and Ryan, Taylar and Brandon of Brookfield.
The Carpino Funeral Home of Southbury was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Zurlo, 98, had been employee of CL&P
Frank Zurlo, 98, of Naples, Fla., died June 27 at Buena Vida Retirement Home in Naples. He was the husband of Vera (Paladino) Zurlo.
Mr. Zurlo was born April 28, 1905, in Waterbury, son of Luigi and Dora (Bucco) Zurlo.
He had been employed as the store foreman for CL&P, first in Waterbury, and then in the New Milford and Bethel offices. He retired after 47 years with CL&P. He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford, and then at St. Peter’s Church in Naples.
Besides his wife, Mr. Zurlo is survived by a son, Lewis and his wife Heather of Danbury; a brother, Louis of Waterbury; a sister, Doris Devino of Waterbury; and two grandchildren, Elise and Laura. He was predeceased by a son, Frank Jr.; four brothers; Joe, John, Angelo and Pat; and a sister, Katherine Cicchetti.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Veronica White, 90, had been foreman at Nestle’s
Veronica Barbara (Gereg) White, 90, of 38 Sunny Valley Road, New Milford, died July 3 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of Donald W. White.
Mrs. White was born May 19, 1913, in Peckville, Pa., daughter of the late John and Veronica (Voytko) Gereg.
She was a foreman at Nestle’s Corp., retiring in 1978 after 36 years of service.
Mrs. White is survived by a son, James of New Milford; a daughter, Barbara Treat of Cupertino, Calif.; a sister, Mary Jones of South Bend, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Theresa Lindner, 76, mother of New Milford man
Theresa Lindner, 76, of Heritage Village, Southbury, died July 4 at Branford Hospice. She was the widow of Ernst Lindner.
Mrs. Lindner was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Pawtucket, R.I., daughter of the late John and Helen McParlin. She worked in the nursing field.
Mrs. Lindner is survived by three daughters, Janet Kolesar of Westchester, N.Y., Lisa Lindner of Connecticut and Kathleen Parsons of Southbury; a son, Eric of New Milford; and two grandchildren.

Memorial service planned for Edward Barnhart
A memorial service for Edward Barnhart, who died March 29, 2000, will be held July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Underwood Meadows in Washington.
The service will be conducted by The Rev. Jack Hoak of St. Francis Xavier Church of New Milford.
Mr. Barnhart, who had been a New Milford resident, is survived by his wife, June Gollsneider Barnhart.

Mary Adela (Dell) Eads, 83, was lifelong public servant
Mary Adela (Dell) Eads, 83, of Kent, a 10-term state senator from the Northwest Corner, died July 8 at Sharon Hospital after a long illness. She was the widow of G. Vernon Eads.
Mrs. Eads was born March 2, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Manuel and Edith I. (Gilmour) Diaz.
She spent her childhood in Pelham Manor, N.Y., and was a graduate of Sweet Briar College and the Katherine Gibbs School. She moved to Kent in 1951 and began a long and illustrious career as a champion of education and children’s welfare.
Locally, Mrs. Eads was active in the Kent Nursing Association, the Kent Library Association, the Kent Republican Party and numerous other area organizations. She was a former trustee of Sharon Hospital and the Marvelwood School, and she was an avid supporter of the Connecticut Junior Republic. She was a partner in her husband’s drop forge equipment business.
Mrs. Eads began her career on the Kent Board of Education, where she served for 26 years, and on the Region 1 Board of Education, both of which she chaired. The new Reading Room at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village was named in her honor last spring.
In 1972, she was named to the Connecticut Board of Education, a post she held until her election to the State Assembly in 1975. After two terms as state representative, she won a seat in the State Senate, where she served until her retirement in 1999.
In the Senate, she served on the education, banking, judiciary and human services committees. Her efforts to maintain the Torrington Branch of the University of Connecticut were successful, and a building was dedicated to her at that campus.
Mrs. Eads’ colleagues in the Senate elected her to various leadership positions, including deputy Republican leader pro tem, Senate minority leader, and state president pro tem. She was appointed co-chairman of the Select Committee on Children and to the Legislative Management Committee.
She was instrumental in establishing the Office of the Child Advocate, and in implementing measures to terminate parental rights in cases of child abuse and neglect. She also played an important role in instituting the Welfare Reform Package. She was dedicated to limiting the size of state government and reducing state taxes.
Mrs. Eads is survived by two sons, Manuel (Skip) and Gregory of Kent; a brother, Manuel (Mike) Diaz of Virginia; and five grandsons.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Chapel at Kent School on Route 341 in Kent.
The Hufcut Funeral Home of Dover Plains, N.Y., is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ann D’Amico, 60, had lived in New Milford
Mary Ann D’Amico, 60, of Summerfield, Fla., formerly of New Milford, died July 13 in Orlando, Fla. She was the wife of Enzo D’Amico.
Mrs. D’Amico was born Nov. 12, 1942, in Passaic, N.J.
She moved to Summerfield this year after living in New Milford since 1966.
Besides her husband, Mrs. D’Amico is survived by two sons, Anthony of Atlanta, Ga., and Thomas of New Milford; a step-son, Donald Westerhoff of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Cocilovo of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two sisters, Nina Randazzo of Asbury, N.J., and Linda Dooley of Maui, Hawaii.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.

La Verne Green, 76, was a Bridgewater resident
La Verne Merritt “Whitey” Green, 76, of 119 Northrop St., Bridgewater, died July 9 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Janine (Vanden Bassche) Green.
Mr. Green was born June 6, 1927, in Greece, N.Y., son of the late Watson and Laura (Krum) Green.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He owned Micro Electronic Systems Inc. in Brookfield, retiring in 2001.
He was a member of the Bridgewater Historical Society.
Besides his wife, Mr. Green is survived by two daughters, Elisabeth Roy of Hampden, Mass., and Heddy Koenig of Barre, Vt.; a sister, Myrtle Kester of Hilton, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
