Lois Woodard, 88, lived in Kent and Washington
Lois (McHan) Woodard, 88, of Kent, died Feb. 16 at The Kent Specialty Care Facility, Kent. She was the widow of Nicholas Woodard.
Mrs. Woodard as born in Washington July 17, 1910, daughter of the late William and Lillian (Cable) McHan. She spent her early life in Washington before moving to Kent.
She is survived by a son, Thomas Woodard of Walnut, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 10:30 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Burial will be in Good Hill Cemetery, Kent. There are no calling hours.

Anthony Zaccara, 66, had been teacher at Schaghticoke School
Anthony C. Zaccara, 66, of 3 Forest Trail, Brookfield, beloved husband and father, died March 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after struggling valiantly to recover from a stroke.
Born in White Plains, N.Y., July 6, 1932, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Zaccara.
Mr. Zaccara attended Concordia Preparatory School and Bloomfield College where he received his B.A. in German and Latin in 1952.
Joining the Army after college, he brought home with him a respect and dedication for his country and the moral values he hoped would be maintained. Mr. Zaccara continued his education at Bridgeport University, where he received a master's in education and a sixth-year certificate.
He taught junior and high school English for 12 years at schools in the state, including Warren Harding High School, Middlebrook Junior High School, Trumbull High School and Newtown High School, where he served as department chair and baseball coach.
With the spirit of an entrepreneur, Mr. Zaccara started three successful businesses. He was a co-founder of the Wipawaug Day Camp in Newtown, part owner of the Fore 'n Aft North of Brewster and the Fore 'n Aft of Westport, and co-owner of Fiddler's Restaurant of Brookfield.
Mr. Zaccara's career included several years of selling insurance and real estate for his own company. After 18 years in the private business sector, he returned to his love of teaching for 10 years at Schaghticoke Middle School in New Milford until his retirement in 1995.
A scholar and athlete, Mr. Zaccara's interests included languages, classic films, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, chess and pinochle. Departing this world one day before Joe DiMaggio, Mr. Zaccara was always a fan of the Yankees. In his own baseball career, Mr. Zaccara was known for his switch-hitting and his three-time batting championships at Bloomfield College.
He will be missed at the Candlewood Lake Club, where he competed in numerous tennis and golf tournaments. His passion for athletics and literature filled his life. With a talent for quoting poetry, Mr. Zaccara often woke his children with Shakespeare: "I can call spirits from the vasty deep/But will they come when you do call?"
Thank you to all of his family and friends for loving Mr. Zaccara, for sharing in his love of life, and for helping him in his last hours.
A man of intellect, wit, and charm, Mr. Zaccara left a loving and close family, including his wife of 39 years, Shirley Jean Zaccara; four children, Jennifer Rafferty of Cohasset, Mass., Leslie Sands and her husband John of Brookfield, Glenn Zaccara and his wife Lindsay of Greenwich, and Adam Zaccara of Brookfield; and five grandchildren, Cara, Emily, Brooke, Bryce and Keefe.
Residing near one another throughout his life, his surviving siblings are Henry Zaccara and Colette Gibbons of Brookfield, who mourn the loss of their brother. In addition he leaves 21 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Congregational Church of Brookfield, Book Of Remembrance Fund, Routes 25 and 133, Brookfield, CT 06804.

James Dolan, 85, New Milford native, active in community
James R. Dolan, 85, of 5 Gregory Drive, New Milford, husband of Elizabeth McMahon Dolan, died March 22 at his home.
Mr. Dolan had served a number of years on the former New Milford Board of Selectmen and later served one term on the present New Milford Town Council.
He was born in New Milford Jan. 8, 1914, a son of Albert M. and Alice Roche Dolan. He spent his early life in the Gaylordsville section of New Milford, attended the former Gaylordsville one-room school, and later graduated from New Milford High School, Class of 1931.
Mr. Dolan had been employed at the former First National stores in New Milford from 1932 to 1977 and retired as a manager.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Ezra Woods Post 31 American Legion of New Milford.
Long active in the New Milford community, he was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Church and was a member of Housatonic Council No. 40 Knights of Columbus, a group in which he had served as a past Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Rev. John D. Kennedy Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of Danbury.
In Gaylordsville, Mr. Dolan had been a charter member of the Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department and had served as treasurer for 33 years. He was a member of the Merwinsville Hotel Restoration of Gaylordsville, the Gaylordsville Historical Society, and the former Wemanesa Grange of Gaylordsville. He was also a longtime member of the New Milford Historical Society and served as treasurer from 1985 to 1994.
He was a member of the National AARP, as well as the local chapter of New Milford, where he served as a past president. He was a member of the New Milford Historical Society, serving as treasurer from 1985 to 1994. He was also a member of the John A. Gildea Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Danbury. He had been honored on St. Patrick's Day 1999 as New Milford's Irishman of the Year.
Besides his wife, Mr. Turner is survived by a son, Denis P. Dolan of New Milford; three grandchildren, Kevin J. Dolan, Ryan J. Dolan and Patrick T. Dolan; and several nieces and nephews.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Alice C. Turner, 99, was former New Milfordite
Alice C. Turner, 99, the widow of Wilburt Lemuel Turner, died March 20 at Ashlar of Newtown.
She was born at Short Beach, Stratford, Jan. 18, 1900, a daughter of Frederick E. and Annie M. Ruggles Nearing.
Mrs. Turner attended Sedgewick School in Stratford. She worked with her husband, who owned the New Milford Paint and Wallpaper Company in New Milford from 1931 to 1957. After retiring, they lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Mrs. Turner returned to Stratford in 1980. She had resided at Ashlar of Newtown since 1991. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Lodge O.E.S. Armee #99 for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Turner is survived by her nephew, Edwin Fordham of Stratford. She was predeceased by her children, Wilburt Jr. and Richard Turner, Bernice Platt and Evelyn Johnson; and three sisters and one brother, Ruby Nearing Fordham, Marion Nearing Tanner, Lillian Nearing Downs and William M. Nearing.
The Tomlinson Homestead of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Gladys McHann, 59, was school crossing guard
Gladys (McAlley) McHann, 59, of 31 Taylor St., New Milford, died March 22 at her home.
Mrs. McHann was born in New Milford Feb. 22, 1940, daughter of the late Robert and Annetta (McBath) McAlley.
She had been a school crossing guard at Grove Street and Route 67 for many years.
Mrs. McHann is survived by two sons, James McHann Jr. of New Milford and Frederick McHann of Marietta, Ga.; three daughters, Patricia Dyer and Kimberly Whitcomb, both of New Milford, and Dawn Ferriss of Quantico, Va.; one brother, Frederick McAlley of New Milford; three sisters, Annetta Volinski, Nancy Shields and Elizabeth Wyant, all of New Milford; and five grandchildren.
Private funeral services are today (Friday) at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford. Interment is at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Western Connecticut Chapter, 1 Selleck St., Suite 500, Norwalk, CT 06855.

Herbert Schultz, 64. had owned trucking firm
Herbert E. Schultz, 64, of 175 Beard Drive, New Milford, died March 21 at New Milford Hospital.
Mr. Schultz was born in New Jersey, March 3, 1935, a son of Ernest and Phyllis Enfield Schultz.
He lived part of his life in New Milford, was a graduate of New Milford High School Class of 1953, and was employed for many years at the former R.A. Kershaw Paving Contractors in New Milford.
He later established H.E. Schultz Trucking, which he operated from 1971 to 1998. He was last employed by Washed Aggregate Resources Inc. of Wassaic, N.Y.
Mr. Schultz is survived by four sons, Donald E. Schultz of Menasha, Wisc., Dean E. Schultz of Danbury, and Daryl F. Schultz and Corey D. Schultz, both of New Milford; and two granddaughters, Tricia Schultz and Nicole Schultz. He was predeceased by his former wife, Nancy Larson Schultz.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of the arrangements.

Marion Keenan, 65, sister of Washington resident
Marion R. Keenan, 65, of N7088 Cedar Lane, Crivitz, Wisc., died March 19 at Bay Area Medical Center. She was the wife of Joseph Keenan.
Mrs. Keenan was born Jan. 16, 1934, in Chicago, daughter of the late Michael and Victoria Roze. She lived in the Chicago area until 1985, when she moved to Cleveland. She moved to Marinette County in 1998. She married Joseph Keenan in 1985 and had been employed in the hospitality business as an accountant.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Michael and Gregory Frost, both of Wisconsin; two daughters, Victoria Trenzek of Canada and Susan Abrams of Wisconsin; a stepdaughter, Holly Keenan of Chicago; a brother, Wallace Stuyve Roze of Washington; a sister, Virginia Thompson of Virginia; two stepsisters; her first husband and four grandchildren.
The Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home of Wisconsin was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Case, 74, leaves brother in New Milford
Robert W. Case, 74, of The Gables of Guilford, 201 Granite Road, Guilford, formerly of 8 Coach Road, Danbury, died March 27.
He was the husband of Mary G. Case. Mr. Case retired as a guidance counselor for the Danbury school system after 35 years and was an Army veteran.
Besides his wife, Mr. Case leaves two sons, Francis M. Case of Sudbury, Mass., and John R. Case of Branford; a brother, George E. Case of New Milford; and four grandchildren.

Frances Beglan, 94, mother of area residents
Frances Rehn Beglan, 94, died March 21 at the Yucca Valley Nursing Home in Yucca Valley, Calif. She was the wife of the late John L. Beglan Sr.
She was born in Collindale, Pa., daughter of the late Frank L. and Margaret (Gwyn) Rehn.
After having lived in Flushing, N.Y., she moved to New Milford in 1965, residing in the town until 1989, when she moved to California.
During her professional years, she was assistant librarian for the Boyce Thompson Institute, formerly in Yonkers, N.Y., where she developed her life long interest in flowers and gardens.
Mrs. Beglan is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Murphy of Yucca Valley and Kathleen Pielli of New Milford; four sons, John L. Jr. of Kings Park, Long Island, N.Y., Joseph F. of Westminster, Md., David F. of Roxbury and Eugene W. of Valley Stream, Long Island; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in California and New York.

Mary Sue 'Sudie' Wilkinson, 63, was active in Bridgewater
Mary Sue "Sudie" Wilkinson, 63, of Bridgewater died suddenly at Danbury Hospital March 30. She was the wife of Loy Wilkinson.
She was born on Sept. 17, 1935, in Charleston, W.Va., a daughter of Richard Ery and Ruth Ralsten Woodrum. An alumna of Morris Harvey College, Charleston, with a degree in dental technology, Mrs. Wilkinson had been a resident of Bridgewater for 18 years.
She worked for many years as a volunteer in Danbury Hospital, and for the past four years was employed at the Pottery Barn in the Danbury Fair Mall. Mrs. Wilkinson was a member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church and had served as a deacon. She was an active member of the Bridgewater Republican Party.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Wilkinson is survived by two sons, John Wilkinson of Sherman and Andrew Wilkinson of New Milford; a daughter, Molly Stratton of Bridgewater; a brother, Robert Woodrum of South Charleston, W.Va.; two sisters, Sally Young of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ruth Thomas of Charleston; five grandchildren, Robert and Mathew Wilkinson and Sarah, JP and David Stratton; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Bridgewater Congregational Church within the next two to three weeks. Burial will be in South Cemetery, Bridgewater, at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bridgewater Congregational Church, Book of Remembrance, P.O. Box 7, Bridgewater, CT 06752-1610.
