Howard Skinner, 90, former Washington resident
Howard Penniston Skinner, 90, of Westside Road, Woodbury, died Dec. 29 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the widower of Elizabeth Fowler Skinner and Jean Rankin Hollis Skinner.
Mr. Skinner was born Nov. 20, 1910, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Stanish Penniston and Adelaide (Gossman) Skinner.
He was a resident of Plandome Manor, N.Y., for many years and later of Washington. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic Preparatory School and Brown University.
Mr. Skinner was the owner of S.P. Skinner Company in New York City and Naugatuck. He was active in many international trade organizations and was a member of the Mahasett Yacht Club in Mahasett, N.Y., the Washington Country Club and the governing board of Plandome Manor.
Mr. Skinner was a founding member of the Unitarian Church in Mahasett and was a member of the Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society.
He is survived by a son, John of Vermont; a daughter, J. Victoria of Florida; a stepdaughter, Pamela Hollis Linker of New York; a sister, Dorothy Tyler of Florida; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and two step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society, 122 South Pomperaug Ave., Woodbury. Burial will be in the spring.
The funeral home of Munson-Lovetere of Woodbury is in charge of arrangements.

Sandy Scrafford, 56, former New Milford resident
Sandy McCuaig Scrafford, 56, of Rancho Mirage, Calif., died Oct. 25 in Los Gatos, Calif. She was the wife of Donald Jerry Scrafford.
Mrs. Scrafford was born May 16, 1944, in New York City, the daughter of William Duncan McCuaig and Patricia Freeman Barker and stepdaughter of Merritt Beach Barker.
She spent her early childhood and school years in New Milford and Ridgefield. She was a graduate of The Knox School and Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School and attended Rollins College in Florida and the Neighborhood Playhouse in Manhattan.
She was a legal secretary in San Jose for many years.
She was an avid golfer and a member of the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. She also enjoyed traveling, cooking and the company of friends and family.
Besides her husband and parents and stepfather, Mrs. McCuaig is survived by eight children and stepchildren, Courtney Adamo, Tacey Brewster, Linda Hampton, Judy Johnston, Cathy Verduzco, Beth Karnes, Brook Paul and Derek Scrafford; and many grandchildren.
A celebration of her life was held Nov. 18 in San Jose.

Benedict (Benny) Travaglin, 88, local native, standout athlete
Benedict (Benny) P. Travaglin, 88, of 17A Summit Drive, New Milford, husband of Helen (Johnson) Travaglin, died Dec. 31 at New Milford Hospital.
Mr. Travaglin was born in New Milford April 7, 1912, a son of the late Thomas and Ernesta (Zannelli) Travaglin. He was a graduate of New Milford High School, Class of 1931, where he had excelled in both baseball and basketball. He later attended Melvern Prep School in Melvern, Pa.
Mr. Travaglin was an outstanding member of the New Milford Townies baseball team in the 1930s and 1940s. He was also a member of the Robertson Bleachery and Dye Works basketball team in the 1930s. He was honored by the Old Timers Athletic Association of Greater Danbury in 1972.
He was employed as a machine operator at the former Scovill Manufacturing Co. in New Milford for many years, retiring in 1975.
Mr. Travaglin was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford and a 60-year member of the Housatonic Council No. 40, The Knights of Columbus of New Milford. He also served as a volunteer driver with the New Milford Ambulance Association.
Besides his wife of 61 years, he is survived by a son, Thomas B. of Winsted; two daughters, Faye T. Thibodeau and her husband Charles of Oldsmar, Fla., and Joan T. Walker and her husband McClaren of Danbury; two sisters, Mary T. Mitchell of Danbury and Marie T. Miller of New Milford; six grandchildren, Tracy Thibodeau, Trevor Thibodeau, Tricia Thibodeau, McClaren Walker, Jr., Scott Walker and Charles Walker; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Travaglin was predeceased by two brothers, Arnold and Paul T. Travaglin, and one sister, Margaret Pascuzzo.

Dr. Arnold A. Hutschnecker, 102, was Richard Nixon’s psychotherapist
Dr. Arnold A. Hutschnecker, 102, died peacefully at his home in Sherman Dec. 28. He was predeceased by his wife, Florita.
Dr. Hutschnecker was a German immigrant who came to New York City in 1936 and Sherman in 1942. He practiced internal medicine, turning to psychiatry in 1952. He was a pioneer in psychosomatic medicine.
He was noted for being Richard Nixon’s psychotherapist when Mr. Nixon was a U.S. Senator, and then when he was U.S. President.
Dr. Hutschnecker was the author of five books, including "The Will To Live," which was published in 1951.
He is survived by a sister, Greta Hutschnecker Plattry; 12 nieces and nephews; 15 grand-nieces and nephews; and eight great-grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services have been concluded.
Mildred Hespe, 75, mother of New Milford man
Mildred M. Hespe, 75, of 407 Glen Ayre, New Milford, died Jan. 10 in New Milford Hospital. She was the widow of Robert J. Hespe.
Mrs. Hespe was born July 29, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Charles and Grace (Mazzucco) Massie.
She had been a resident of New Milford since 1994. A member of the New Milford Senior Center and New Milford Chapter of AARP, she was also a member of St. Bridget's Church in Cornwall Bridge.
Mrs. Hespe is survived by four sons, Robert P. Hespe of New Milford, Charles Hespe of San Francisco, Calif., Michael Hespe of Danbury and Thomas Hespe of Stiwell, Kans.; seven grandchildren; and her best friend and daughter-in-law Donna Hespe.

Naomi Kriegsman, 75, mother of New Milford man
Naomi Kriegsman, 75, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., died Jan. 7 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. She was the widow of Irwin Daniel Kriegsman.
Mrs. Kriegsman was born Oct. 17, 1924, in New York City to Max and Beatrice (Goldburg) Eder.
She was educated in New York City and worked as a product demonstrator for Price Chopper in Poughkeepsie. On March 27, 1949, she married Irwin Daniel Kriegsman. She had lived in Poughkeepsie for the past several years.
Mrs. Kriegsmasn is survived by a son, Len Kriegsman of New Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and James Lenihan of Poughkeepsie; and four grandchildren, Danielle, Teddi and Sydney Kriegsman of New Milford and Joseph Lenihan of Poughkeepsie.

Michael Loya, 89, brother of New Milford woman
Michael A. Loya, 89, of 33 Lincoln Ave., Danbury, died Jan. 8 at the Pope John Paul II Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Veronica (Falls) Loya.
Mr. Loya was born in Vanderbilt, Penn., March 11, 1910, son of the late Michael A. and Mary (Kovach) Loya. He came to Danbury as a young man.
During World War II, Mr. Loya worked as a machinist at the Bullard Co. in Bridgeport. Following the war he worked as a hatter and became the superintendent of the former Mallory Hat Co. in Danbury and later the Danbury Hat Co. He retired in 1976.
Mr. Loya was a member of St. Gregory the Great Church, and formerly had been a third degree member of the McGivney Council of the Knights of Columbus.
As a young man, Mr. Loya had played football for the Danbury Trojans and later coached the Top Hat "Bull Dogs" football team. He was a member of the Danbury Old Timers Association and was honored by that organization in 1992.
Mr. Loya is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Dorothy V. and David Kroha, Barbara and Joseph Dominakus, Patricia H. and William Murphy, all of Danbury, and Nancy V. and Bernard Reidy of Newtown; five brothers: John Loya and George Loya of Danbury, Joseph Loya and Andrew Loya of Bethel and Stephen Loya of New Fairfield; two sisters, Mary Kaiser of New Milford and Irene Melycher of Florida; 10 grandchildren, David Kroha, Ronald Kroha, Michael Kroha, Cynthia McArthur, Barbara Braatz, Thomas Dominakus, William D. Murphy Jr., Patricia Kelley Murphy, Bernard Reidy Jr. and Andrew Reidy; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Agnes Sidella, 78, was born in Washington
Agnes Ellen Sidella, 78, of St. Simons Island, Ga., died Jan. 8 at Southeastern Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick, Ga. She was the wife of Frank C. Sidella.
Mrs. Sidella was born in Washington. She attended Minnesota University and was a resident of Glynn County, Ga., for the past 21 years.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cassina Garden Club and a charter member of Lord of Life Luthern Church.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Sidella is survived by a daughter, Pamela M. Sidella of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a brother, Edward R. Zumpf of Washington.

Janet Phillips, 66, mother of New Milfordite
Janet F. Phillips, 66, of 128 Highview Drive, Winchester, died Jan. 10 at Litchfield Woods Health Care Center in Torrington, following an 18-year battle with cancer. She was the wife of Bidwell B. Phillips.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Hartford April 12, 1933, a daughter of the late Alton and Edna (Petersen) Fish. She was a graduate of Weaver High School.
After her marriage in 1955, she and her husband moved to Harwinton, where they lived for 30 years. They lived in Winchester since 1987.
Mrs. Phillips had been employed by Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She worked there for 28 years, first as a volunteer and later in the operating room, the recovery room and in scheduling.
Besides her husband of 44 years, she is survived by her son, Brad Phillips of Winsted; and her daughter, Lynne Phillips of New Milford.
A private ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family.

Nellie Ritchie, 78, longtime New Milford resident
Nellie (Jeffries) Ritchie, 78, of Fort Hill Road, New Milford, died Jan. 4 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Gordon R. Ritchie.
Mrs. Ritchie was born in Mebane, N.C., May 19, 1921, a daughter of the late Andrew and Pearl (Nash) Jeffries. She spent her early life in North Carolina, moving to New Milford upon her marriage in 1942. She was a member of the Northville Baptist Church, New Milford.
Mrs. Ritchie is survived by a son, Gordon Ritchie Jr. of New Milford; three sisters, Clarice Durrand of Holliswood, N.Y., Mildred Lanier of Greensboro, N.C., and Mary Enoch of Mebane, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
