Alice Sauer, 84, was a former Roxbury resident
Alice Sauer, 84, formerly of South Street, Roxbury, died Jan. 13 at The Lutheran Home of Southbury. She was the widow of Martin Carl Sauer.
Mrs. Sauer was born April 6, 1916, in Salisbury, N.H., daughter of the late Edmond and Laura (Stickley) Little. She attended local schools and graduated from the Elliot School of Nursing in Manchester, N.H.
Mrs. Sauer worked as an RN for many years, most recently working as a nurse at the Mediplex Convalescent Hospital in Danbury. She spent most of her life volunteering in Danbury, where she and her husband raised their family. She was active with the Danbury First Congregational Church and the Red Cross RSVP programs.
Mrs. Sauer is survived by a son, Martin Sauer of Roxbury; a daughter, Jane Sauer of Somerville, Mass.; and three grandsons, Joel Sauer of Austin, Texas, Joshua Sauer of Portland, Ore., and Justin Sauer of St. Mary's, Ga.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. at the Roxbury Congregational Church. The Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 2 School St., is in charge of arrangements.
Pauline Randall, 62, mother of Roxbury woman
Pauline Alves Randall, 62, died Jan. 15 at the home of her sister, Mary West, of Danbury. Mrs. Randall was the wife of Donald Randall.
She was born in Atlantic City, N.J., grew up in Stratford and graduated from Stratford High School. She spent most of her married life in the New Milford area and was employed for 18 years by the Grolier Education Corporation, where she was very much a part of the "Grolier" family.
Mrs. Randall was a long-standing member of the Calvary Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bridgeport, where she held several offices. She was also a longtime member of the Bridgewater Firemen's Auxiliary.
Besides her husband and sister, she is survived by a son, Darnell of Brookfield; two daughters, Toni Hays of Roxbury and Lori Roberson of Bridgeport; a sister, Delores Bell of Bridgeport; two brothers, Clayton Alves of Birmingham, Ala., and Ralph Alves of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Meda Hoffman, 84, was local substitute teacher
Meda F. Hoffman, 84, of 27 Skyline Drive, Candlewood Shores, Brookfield, died Jan. 15 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Charles Hoffman, a partner of the former Hoffman Poultry Farm of Brookfield.
Mrs. Hoffman was born in Plant City, Fla., Dec. 1, 1915, a daughter of the late John and Bethany Fuhrer.
She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in education and began a career as a teacher in St. Augustine and Panama City, Fla. Upon her marriage, she relocated to Connecticut, where she continued to be a substitute teacher in Brookfield and New Milford.
Mrs. Hoffman had been a member and president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post No. 60 of Danbury and was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Brookfield, AARP and the Brookfield Senior Center.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth Nanna, a teacher at Brookfield High School, and Dr. John Nanna, a dentist in Brookfield; a granddaughter, Lauren Nanna, a senior at Brookfield High School; and a brother, Carl Fuhrer of Ormand Beach, Fla.

Mary Thompson, 70, was a New Milford native
Mary Herring Thompson, 70, of 26 Erickson Road, New Milford, died Jan. 13 at her home. She was the wife of Charles E. Thompson,
Mrs. Thompson was born in New Milford April 15, 1929, a daughter of the late Henry and Ethel (Ziegler) Herring. She was a lifelong resident of New Milford.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Charles E. Thompson Jr. of New Milford and Ronald Thompson of Kent; three daughters, Mary Pelletier and Donna Bryant, both of New Milford, and Gail Barto of Dover Plains, N.Y.; a brother, Gordon Holister of Massachusetts; a sister, Patricia Lavoie of Florida; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Joseph Piskura, 81, step-grandfather of New Milfordite
Joseph S. Piskura, 81, of Charcoal Ridge East, New Fairfield, died Jan. 12 at his home. He was the husband of Julia H. (Dominakaus) Piskura.
Mr. Piskura was born April 5, 1918, in Brookfield. He was the son of the late Steven and Catherine (Sackso) Piskura. He attended Brookfield schools and the Danbury Trade School. He later moved to Danbury and then to New Fairfield in 1956.
Mr. Piskura was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Mediterranean theater with the Army. He was a self-employed custom builder and founder of J.S.P. Builders, Inc. He was especially fond of renovating older houses.
Mr. Piskura was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Church, New Fairfield, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and formerly of the Polish American Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. He enjoyed travel with his family.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jolene Ann Zaborowski, and her husband, Joseph M., of Bethel; three brothers, John M. Piskura of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., James T. Piskura of Bethel and Adam Piskura of Danbury; two sisters, Mary Zuchack of Brookfield and Susan Gouveia of Westchester, N.Y.; a step-granddaughter, Leighann Hnyda and her husband, William, of New Milford; a step great-grandson, Trevor Joseph Hnyda; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, William, Albert and Frank Piskura.

Bob Bradley, 59, leaves family in New Milford
Bob Melvin Bradley of Henderson, Nev., died Jan. 8. He was the husband of Cynthia (Loyce) Bradley.
Mr. Bradley was born Dec. 30, 1940, in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School, Fort Worth, in 1959 and attended Pomona College and the University of Texas. He received a bachelor's in professional studies and a master's in marketing from Pace University in New York.
He was publisher of Casino Executive Magazine, a magazine of Gem Communications in New York City.
Mr. Bradley received recognition for his dedication to his job, including the Jesse Neal award for publishing excellence. He worked in advertising for Quaker Oats Company in Chicago, Ill.; was publisher of C-Store Business Magazine of Butterick Publishing/Maclean Hunter in New York; western advertising manager of Travel Weekly (Ziff-Davis/Murdoch/Reed); director of advertising; and had publishing sales/marketing responsibility for the largest AAA Club in the world.
He was a justice of the peace and on the Republican Town Committee in Ridgefield.
Mr. Bradley was a coach in Pop Warner football, rooted for the Dallas Cowboys and loved golf and downhill skiing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Rex Howard Bradley of Henderson and Sean Erin Bradley of New Milford; a daughter by marriage, Juliette Grace Bradley; a granddaughter, Jessica Dean Bradley of New Milford; a grandson, Tyler Brook Bradley of New Milford; his mother, Mary Alice Baker of Dallas, Texas; a brother, the Rev. Bruce Bradley of Farmers Branch, Texas; five sisters who reside in the Texas area; and many friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Walter Bradley, his stepfather, Dr. Keith Baker, and an infant son, Scott Franklin Bradley.

Gloria Swanson, 62, longtime New Milford resident
Gloria J. Swanson, 62, of 15 High View Drive, New Milford, died Jan. 12 at New Milford Hospital. She was the widow of Allan K. Swanson.
Mrs. Swanson was born Aug. 3, 1937, daughter of the late Charles and Rose Greenlaw. She attended St. Francis Xavier School and graduated from New Milford High School, Class of 1955.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Shaw of Torrington, Denise Shanks of Bantam; two sons, Allan of Marble Dale and Charles of Bethlehem; and six grandchildren.
The Rev. Richard Sears will conduct a memorial service tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church, Washington Green, Washington.
Burial will be in the spring. The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Avis Collins, 90, longtime New Milford resident
Avis L. Collins, 90 of 40 Old Ridge Road, New Milford, died Jan. 12 at her home. She was the wife of William Sherman Collins.
Mrs. Collins was born Jan. 3, 1910, in Norwalk, the daughter of Fredrick and Clara Whipple.
She graduated from Meriden High School and moved to New Milford in 1928. She married her husband May 29, 1937, in New Milford.
Mrs. Collins was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in New Milford. She enjoyed her family, home and travel.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael Collins of New Milford and David Collins of Elkhart, Indiana; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Thompson.
Services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 7 Whittlesey Ave., New Milford, Thursday at 2 p.m.
The Rev. Pastor Harry L. Knisely will officiate.

Charles Gorman Sr., 92, father of New Milford woman
Charles Anthony Gorman, Sr., 92, of Apopka, Fla., formerly of Danbury, died Jan. 14 at Florida Hospital Altamonte. He was the husband of Mary (Wixted) Gorman.
Mr. Gorman was born in Bethel, son of the late Anthony and Mary Margaret (McManus) Gorman. He was known as one of Bethel's finest athletes for his athletic achievements. In the 1920s, he was offered a professional contract by the New York Yankees, and in 1984, he was honored by the Danbury Ol' Timers Athletic Association.
Mr. Gorman was a sales associate for Murphy-Gorman Hat Company before becoming a Connecticut state trooper. He later became a special investigator for the state of Connecticut.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Charles "Tony" Gorman Jr. of Danbury, Robert William Gorman of Coral Springs, Fla., Richard Leo Gorman of Ostrander, Ohio, and Philip Thomas Gorman of Coconut Creek, Fla.; three daughters, Mary Kwas of New Milford, Susan Altenburg of Cassel Berry, Fla., and Joan Vincent of Apopka; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Dianne Toman, 54, was active in community
Dianne M. (Redosh) Toman, 54, of 17 Upland Road, New Milford, died Jan. 18 at Hartford Hospital from complications related to pneumonia. She was the wife of Stephen E. Toman.
Mrs. Toman was born Jan. 23, 1945, a daughter of Ann Redosh of 5 Surrey Lane, New Milford, and the late William Redosh.
She graduated from St. John's University of Queens, N.Y., in 1966. She and her husband moved to New Milford in 1973.
Mrs. Toman was active in numerous religious and civic activities, including St. Francis Xavier Church of New Milford, International Alliance for Children and the New Milford Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Toman was a licensed real estate broker with Coldwell Banker and most recently Tripp Real Estate. She developed a passion for golf and was a member of the Lake Waramaug Country Club.
Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a sister, Joanne Sauter of Bedford, Tex.; a brother, Doug Redosh, MD, of Golden, Co.; three sons, Stephen M. of Lawrenceville, N.J., Peter W. of Alexandria, Va., and David L. of Coppell, Tex.; a daughter, Marika A. Coolbeth of Washington Depot; and three grandchildren, Michael, LoraAnn and Sarah.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Route 109, New Milford.

Gary Adams, 54, was a Roxbury leader, fireman and volunteer
Gary Richard Adams, 54, of South Street, Roxbury, died at home Jan. 15 after a 15-year battle with melanoma. He was the husband of Linda (Schlegel) Adams.
Mr. Adams was born May 5, 1945, in Long Beach, N.J., son of the late Joseph E. and Marion (Smith) Adams. He was an independent insurance agent for 25 years and president of the Connecticut Insurance Agency, Inc. in Sandy Hook.
He graduated from Booth Free School in Roxbury in 1959 and Washington High School in 1963. As a student, he played football and soccer and he received the Charles McGuiness Award for Excellence in Athletics.
Mr. Adams received his bachelor's in agricultural economics in 1960 from the University of Delaware. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He served in the Army Reserves from 1968 to 1974. Upon returning to Roxbury in 1971, he became involved with the Roxbury Board of Finance for 18 years, serving as chairman for 12 years.
Mr. Adams was a 26-year member of the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief for five years. Mr. Adams served on the Lake Lillinonah Authority and the Civil Defense Commission.
He was also the 911 coordinator in Roxbury and worked on the development of a house numbering system. Mr. Adams was also a 40-year member of the Roxbury Congregational Church, serving as chairman of the Stewardship Commission, chairman of the Board of Trustees, moderator, vice-moderator and treasurer.
Mr. Adams was an avid photographer who enjoyed skiing and traveling.
Besides his wife of 31 years, he is survived by a son, Brian E. Adams of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Kristin J. Adams of Burlington, Vt.; and two brothers, David E. Adams of Bridgewater, N.J., and Douglas G. Adams of Stowe, Vt. He is predeceased by a son, Scott G. and a brother, Lee T. Adams.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow (Saturday), at 11 a.m. at the Roxbury Congregational Church. Burial will follow at Roxbury Center Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, Main Street South, from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Friday).
