Marilyn Pond, 65, leaves several area relatives
Marilyn Joyce Pond, 65, of Nellie Hill Road, Dover Plains, N.Y., died March 14 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Miss Pond was born May 26, 1934, in Sharon, daughter of Geraldine (Bailey) (Pond) Marcou of Culpeper, Va., and the late Royal S. Pond.
She spent her early life in Sharon and attended Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village.
Mrs. Pond worked at the Berkshire Transformer Co. and later worked as an assistant supervisor at the former Audio Dynamics in New Milford from 1972 to 1982.
She is survived by six brothers, Loyal R. and Hobie Pond, both of New Milford, Oley Pond of Oakville, Wally Pond of Mercersburg, Pa., Scott Pond of New Preston and Ronnie Marcou of Rixsey, Va.; seven sisters, Helen Beard of Lakeville, Beatrice Chase of Wingdale, N.Y., Phyliss Kustosz and Bonnie Hill, both of New Milford, Lois Colby and Dean Woodard, both of Torrington, and Rolanda Williams of Missville, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a companion, Dale Raymond of Wingdale, N.Y. She was predeceased by three sisters.

Durward Kirby, 88, TV star and former Shermanite
Durward Kirby, 88, of Fort Meyers, Fla., died March 15 at Shell Point Village in Fort Meyers. He was the husband of the late Mary Paxton Young Kirby.
Mr. Kirby was born in Covington, Ky., Aug. 24, 1911, son of the late Homer Cleveland and Alma (Haglage) Kirby.
He was one of television's laid-back pioneers and became a household name in the 1950s and 1960s.
During his radio and TV broadcasting heyday, he was the first sidekick for his longtime pal Garry Moore and foil to comedienne Carol Burnett on "The Garry Moore Show".
He was later a co-host of "Candid Camera" with the late Alan Funt. Among his many credits, he performed in the first color television commercial aired on CBS. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy.
Mr. Kirby had moved to Sanibel, Fla., from Sherman in 1974 and later moved to Fort Meyers.
He is survived by two sons, Randall Kirby of Studio City, Calif., and Dennis Kirby of Ossining, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Alex Kirby, Spencer Kirby and Tyler Kirby.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in Coburn Cemetery, Sherman, in the spring.

Catherine Sloam, was a native of Roxbury
Catherine (Pickett) Sloam, formerly of Lakeville, died March 14 at Noble Horizons in Salisbury. She was the widow of Bernard Sloam.
Mrs. Sloam was born in Roxbury, daughter of the late Michael and Katherine (Scanlon) Pickett.
She spent her early years in Roxbury and was a longtime Lakeville resident.
Mrs. Sloam is survived by several nephews.

Margaret Sarracco, 56, was Washington resident
Margaret M. (Melchione) Sarracco, 56, of Shearer Road, Washington, died March 20 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of Thomas Sarracco.
Mrs. Sarracco was born June 15, 1943, in Waterbury, daughter of Carmen Melchione of Waterbury and the late Elizabeth (Pascucci) Melchione. She was a resident of Waterbury before moving to Washington in 1988.
Besides her husband and father, Mrs. Sarracco is survived by two sons, Scott M. Sarracco of Waterbury and Jamie T. Sarracco of Thomaston; and a sister, Theresa Jillson of Waterbury.
A Mass will be held today (Friday) at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Litchfield. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Litchfield.
The Rowe Funeral Home in Litchfield is in charge of the arrangements.
Herbert Schmidt, 71, was a New Milford resident
Herbert Schmidt, 71 of 1 Carriage Drive, New Milford, died March 26 at Greenery Rehabilitation in Waterbury.
Mr. Schmidt was born May 18, 1928, in Germany.
He worked as an electrician for the Osbourn Retirement Community in Rhine, N.Y.
He is survived by several friends.

Memorial service slated for Elizabeth Richmond
A memorial service for Elizabeth Maires Richmond will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m.
The service will take place at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 5 Main St., Bridgewater.
Mrs. Richmond, the wife of Truman T. Richmond of New Milford, died Nov. 20.
Catherine Gardella, 91, spent early life in Washington
Catherine "Tina" M. Gardella, 91, of Toddy Hill Road, Newtown, died April 4 at Ashlar of Newtown.
Miss Gardella was born Nov. 17, 1908, in Ansonia, daughter of the late Andrew F. and Angela (Gualco) Gardella.
She spent her early life in Washington and was a graduate of the former Washington High School. She later graduated from Bay Path Junior College in Longmeadow, Mass.
Miss Gardella was a Hartford resident for more than 50 years, where she worked as a secretary at the United States Veterans Administration.
She is survived by three nephews, Cameron, Duane and Owen Gardella, and a niece, Andrea G. DeWitt.
A Mass will take place today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Washington. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Roxbury.
There are no calling hours.

Teuna Hoyt, 51, had lived in New Milford
Teuna "Tonnie" C. (Oosterwyk) Hoyt, 51, formerly of New Milford, died March 27 in Gulf Shores, Ala., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Hoyt was born in Seattle, Wash., Jan. 15, 1949, daughter of Pete and Joan Oosterwyk of Belfair, Wash. She moved to Connecticut in 1973, where she resided with her family for 17 years.
She was a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines.
Besides her parents, Ms. Hoyt is survived by two daughters, Kim Hoyt Eddy of Idaho Fall, Idaho, and Keri Hoyt of Somerville, Mass.; a son-in-law, Peter Eddy; two sisters, Katie and Terry of Washington state; a brother, Harry of Washington state; several nieces and nephews; and her little dog, Wilson.

Robert F. Ireland, 63, was a K-C employee
Robert F. Ireland, 63, of Garden City Beach, S.C., died March 28 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was the husband of Ruth (Hughes) Ireland.
Mr. Ireland was born Oct. 7, 1936, in Norwalk, the son of the late Robert and Winifred (Olmstead) Ireland.
He retired from Kimberly-Clark in New Milford in 1993 after 32 years of service. He was a charter member of Bible Baptist Church in New Milford.
Besides his wife, Mr. Ireland is survived by two sons, Robert T. of Mississippi and David R. and his wife, Belinda, of Connecticut; six grandchildren, Amanda, T.J., Courtney, Jeffrey, Heather and David Jr.; and three stepbrothers, Warren Jennings, Robert Jennings and Gerald Jennings, all of New York.

Laurence Wyman, 70, was New Milford resident
Laurence D. Wyman, 70, of 8 Sullivan Farm, New Milford, died April 3 at his home. He was the husband of Louise (Desimone) Wyman.
Mr. Wyman was born in Newark, N.J., Jan. 31, 1930, a son of the late Francis L. and Mary Catherine (Holmes) Wyman.
He was a graduate of Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where he received his MBA.
Mr. Wyman was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant in the United States Marines.
He was employed for a number of years at McCall's Magazine in New York City and later was employed by McGraw-Hill Publishing in Stamford.
He had lived in Katonah, N.Y., from 1968 to 1992, when he moved to New Milford. He had been a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes Church and also had been a volunteer at the New Milford Hospital Columbia-Presbyterian Cancer Center in New Milford.
Besides his wife, Mr. Wyman is survived by two sons, Drew L. Wyman of Northampton, Mass., and Bradford J. Wyman of Newtown; a daughter, Tracey S. Wutka of North Granby; and four grandchildren, Caroline, Sarah and Lauren Wutka and Charlie Wyman.
Memorial Mass will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. in Our Lady of the Lakes Church, Old Town Park Road. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Elizabeth Nelson, 74, longtime Roxbury resident
Elizabeth "Betty" S. (Pavlik) Nelson, 74, of Roxbury, died March 30 at Ashlar of Newtown after a long illness. She was the widow of Gustaf B. Nelson Jr.
Mrs. Nelson was born in New Haven Aug. 31, 1925, daughter of the late Lawrence and Elizabeth (Verner) Pavlik.
She grew up and attended schools in Hamden and graduated from Southern Connecticut Teachers College with a major in special education in 1947.
Mrs. Nelson taught at the Southbury Training School and was a substitute teacher in the regional school district while raising her family in Roxbury.
She was very involved with the Roxbury Fire Department and served as president of the Woman's Auxiliary for many years.
Mrs. Nelson was well-known for her Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls at Old Roxbury Days. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and arts and crafts.
She is survived by a son, Roger V. Nelson of Roxbury; four daughters, Pamella A. Nelson of Woodbury, Barbara E. Dale of Long Beach, N.Y., Deborah E. Lee and Beverly E. Grey of Roxbury; a brother, Lawrence Pavlik of Hamden; and six grandchildren in Roxbury. She was predeceased by her son Allen Howard in 1996.
