Jean Barlow, 73, was actively involved in the community
Jean Wellington Barlow, 73, of 34 Main St., New Milford and 7 High Seas, Kennebunk Beach, Maine, died on her birthday, May 29, at her home. She was the wife of Charles Beach Barlow.
Jean Barlow
Mrs. Barlow was born May 29, 1927, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Richard Knowles and Ruth (Stoddard) Wellington.
She attended Bancroft School in Worcester and graduated from the Baldwin School, Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Pine Manor Junior College, Wellesley, Mass.; Dennison University, Granville, Ohio; and Katherine Gibbs School, Boston.
She was an 11th generation direct descendant of Roger Wellington who came to Watertown, Mass., from England in 1630, and of his daughter Mehetabel, the mother of Roger Sherman.
Named for his grandfather, Roger Wellington, Mr. Sherman was the only person to sign the four Charters of Liberty: The Articles of Association (1774), the Declaration of Independence (1776), the Articles of Confederation (1778) and the Constitution of the United States (1787).
Mr. Sherman was a longtime New Milford resident and leading member and a deacon of the First Congregational Church of New Milford.
On Aug. 25, 1973, Mrs. Barlow married Charles Beach Barlow of New Milford at St. Ann's Church, Kennebunkport, bringing her to a 226-year-old new home in New Milford and a lifelong love of Maine shared with her husband at their house, "Treetops," at Kennebunk Beach.
At the Treetops, they were close to her relatives. Family was always a major part of her life.
Mrs. Barlow was active in the business world, first as vice president of Trust Securities Company of Boston and more recently as an officer and director with her husband in two family companies in New Milford - Taylor House Investment Management, Inc. and The C.M. Beach Company.
Church was important, and she was a member of the First Congregational Church, New Milford, Saint Ann's Episcopal Church, Kennebunkport, and First Baptist Church, Worcester.
Charity work was especially rewarding to her. As trustee of the Children's Center of New Milford, she raised countless amounts of money through sale of advertising to support the center's annual benefit.
She is remembered as being good at it - fearless, no one was allowed to say no to her. As trustee of the New Milford Visiting Nurse Association, she carried forward a tradition of service begun by her husband's family, whose grandmother Mrs. Charles Merritt Beach, was a founder, and whose mother, Marian Beach Barlow, was president and a longtime board member.
Mrs. Barlow worked diligently to support its programs, especially Hospice.
She loved to travel and did so widely, especially in England (almost another home to her and her husband) as well as Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and the Far East, frequently on business with her husband. Her most recent objective was to go through the Panama Canal, which she achieved in February.
A special interest, particularly in recent years, was her passion for needlepoint. She met every Tuesday, whenever possible, with a group of ladies in Washington, which became known (at least to her husband) as "The Power Group," where all sorts of matters were discussed and decisions made.
Family members relate that although she was ill, her final year was a great one, and she never complained and never dwelt on her illness.
Memberships were as follows: The New Milford Historical Society; The New Milford Hospital Auxiliary; The New Milford Garden Club; Lake Waramaug Country Club; Antiquarian & Landmarks Society, Hartford; The Buck Store Museum, Kennebunk; The Junior League of Boston.
Trusteeships were as follows: The Children's Center of New Milford and the New Milford Visiting Nurse Association.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Wellington Tracy of Worcester; three nephews, Jonathan Ela Tracy of Springvale, Maine, Richard Thomas Tracy of Boca Raton, Fla., and Marcy Kent Brown IV of Altemont, N.Y.; three nieces, Susan Wellington Richardson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sally Houston Fitzpatrick of Lawrenceville, N.J., and Nancy Hicks Gearin of West Groton, Mass.; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
