Frances Calandra, 84, was active in Senior Center
Frances Neri Calandra, 84, of 310 Glen Ayre Drive, New Milford, died Aug. 14 at her home. She was the wife of the late Charles Calandra.
Mrs. Calandra was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., March 27, 1916, a daughter of the late Vincent and Alfonsina (Cinquamani) Neri.
She moved to New Milford in 1993. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Lakes Church, was active in the New Milford Senior Center, and participated in numerous activities at Glen Ayre senior housing.
She is survived by two sons, Michael A. Calandra and his wife Liz of Milford, N.J., and Vincent J. Calandra and his wife Marianne of New Milford; a daughter, Virginia Sobelman and her husband Lenny of Queens, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Tirelli of Queens and Rose Colletti of Albertson, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Herman H. Ludewig, 62, longtime Sherman resident
Herman H. Ludewig, 62, of 7 Brinsmade Lane, Sherman, died Aug. 11 at West Haven Veterans Hospital.
Mr. Ludewig was born June 29, 1938, in New York City, son of the late Herman and Elsie (Groth) Ludewig.
Along with his family he moved to Sherman in 1948. He was a 1955 graduate of New Milford High School and served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1962. He was self-employed as a radio and television technician and was a sexton at North Cemetery in Sherman.
He is survived by a cousin, Hilde Buehler of Phoenix, Ariz.

William Hood, 74, was father of New Milford man
William Robert Hood, 74, of New Fairfield died Aug. 10 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Dreska) Hood.
Mr. Hood was born in New York City Oct. 6, 1925, a son of the late William and May (Casey) Hood. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Navy.
After moving to New Fairfield in 1952, he was employed by Sperry Products and retired from the Risdon Corporation after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Putnam Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and a charter member of the VFW in Putnam Lake.
Mr. Hood was an avid bowler and a member of the Risdon Corporation’s bowling league for over 20 years. He also loved fishing.
Besides his wife of 48 years, he is survived by three sons, Robert and his wife, Michelle, of New Milford, Steven and his wife, Frances, of Danbury and David of New Fairfield; a daughter, Christine Aldridge and her husband, Charles, of Danbury; eight grandchildren, Stephanie and Dennis Believe, Robert and Nicholas Hood, Melissa and Jillian Hood and Meghan and Kaitlin Aldridge; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice and Lucille.

Sirkka Mishik, 94, had lived in New Milford and Kent
Sirkka Marie Mishik, 94, of Kent died Aug. 9 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the widow of Stephen Mishik.
Mrs. Mishik was born May 5, 1906, in Kuopio, Finland, daughter of the late Gustav and Matilda (Karen) Pelkonen.
She came to the United States in 1920. She lived in Stony Point, N.Y., for many years and worked as a licensed practical nurse for the Helen Hayes Hospital in Haverstraw, N.Y.
Mrs. Mishik lived in Kent for the past six years and previously lived in New Milford for 20 years.
She is survived by a sister, Helen M. Meier of Clearwater, Fla. She was predeceased by her son, Lawrence Mishik.

Marita Bergquist, 77, mother of Roxbury woman
Marita Bergquist, 77, of St. George Place, Sandy Hook, died Aug. 15 at her home. She was the wife of the late Carl Bergquist.
Mrs. Bergquist was born in Bridgeport Jan. 15, 1923, a daughter of the late Raymond and Gertrude (Cawley) Hannan.
She was a graduate of St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. During World War II, she served as an Army nurse with the rank of second lieutenant in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Mrs. Bergquist was employed by the Fairfield Visiting Nurse Association for many years and was last employed at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown until her retirement 10 years ago. She was a resident of Newtown since 1966.
She is survived by a son, Carl and his wife, Jill, of Guilford; three daughters, Lynn Bergquist of Salem, Mass., Cheryl Pratt and her husband, Robert, of Roxbury and Ingrid Bergquist of Newtown; a brother, Raymond Hannan of Trumbull; five grandchildren, Kirsten, Ashley and Lauren Pratt and Joshua and Taylor Bergquist; a favorite niece, Laura Reilly of Monroe; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be today (Friday), at 9:30 a.m. from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, and at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Bertha O. Moffitt, 87, leaves son in Bridgewater
Bertha Ora Moffitt, 87, of Bridgewater died Aug. 20 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Thomas F. Moffitt.
Mrs. Moffitt was born Nov. 15, 1912 in North Adams, Mass., the daughter of the late Frederick and Rose (Boucher) Lefebvre.
She was employed as a nurse’s aide at Fairfield Hills state hospital. She retired after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Moffitt was a longtime Danbury resident and, after retirement, moved to Lantana, Fla. She returned to Bridgewater to make her home with her son and daughter-in-law.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas F. and Susan J. Moffitt of Bridgewater; and her grandchildren, Kimberly, Susan, Thomas and Scott Moffitt. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Moffitt.

Mary Blue, 67, was longtime K-C employee
Mary Blue, 67, of Glen Hill Road in Danbury, died Aug. 12 at Danbury Hospital.
Ms. Blue was born in Martin, N.C., the daughter of the late James and Hattie (Jones) Bailey.
She was a longtime Danbury resident and was employed by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation until her illness.
She is survived by a son, Christopher; a sister, Margaret Russell; a brother, James Bailey; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Debra, a granddaughter, Coretta, two brothers, Watts Briley and Willie Moore and a sister.

John J. Sutter, 73, was noted criminal lawyer
John Joseph Sutter, 73, of New Preston, formerly of Long Island, N.Y., died Aug. 18 at New Milford Nursing Home. He was the husband of Betty (Friedrich) Sutter.
Mr. Sutter was born June 29, 1927, in New York City, son of the late John J. and Louise (Gronnemea) Sutter Sr.
He was a longtime resident of Lake Waramaug and a noted criminal trial lawyer involved in murder cases and the Watergate trials.
He served as president of the Criminal Courts Bar Association of Nassau Country. Mr. Sutter also served as commander of the Manhasset Bay Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a representative to the Lake Waramaug Authority.
Mr. Sutter was also a trustee of the New Preston Congregational Church and a member of the Washington Republican Committee.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, John of Long Island; a daughter, Jane Starke of Washington, D.C.; and four grandchildren.

Brett A. Stone, 28, son-in-law to New Milford couple
Brett Alan Stone, 28, of Boston died suddenly of heart failure July 27. He was the husband of Christy Stone.
Mr. Stone was the son of Bill and Donna Stone of Streator, Ill.
He was a champion swimmer who achieved NCAA records while swimming for the University of Texas at Austin. He set several international records in 1993 at the Macabbiah Games in Israel.
Mr. Stone was an Eagle Scout and a nationally recognized kayaker. He founded the Good Society, a volunteer organization at the University of Texas.
He graduated with honors in communication studies and became a financial analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston in New York. He later spent a year in Hong Kong. He was most recently employed by Boston Ventures, a private equity firm. He had been accepted and planned to begin Harvard Graduate School of Business in January.
Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a brother, Scott of Seattle, Wash.; and his in-laws, Leicle and Jan Chesser of New Milford.

Sandra K. Doepker, 51, was hospital LPN
Sandra Kay Doepker, 51, of New Milford died Aug. 14 at her home.
Miss Doepker was born Sept. 30, 1948, in Lansing, Mich., a daughter of Irene Doepker and the late Norbert Doepker.
She moved to Carson City, Mich., in December of 1948. She attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from Carson City High School in 1966.
Miss Doepker obtained an LPN degree from Montcalm Community College and worked at Carson City Hospital for several years. She later moved to New Milford and worked at New Milford Hospital for almost 30 years.
Besides her mother, Miss Doepker is survived by a sister, Diane Mason of Holland, Mich.; a nephew, Matthew Mason of Holland; a niece, Megan Mason and her fiance, Nathan Larson, of St. Paul, Minn.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, the Rev. Dave Doepker.

Margaret A. Bucci, 85, was New Milford resident
Margaret A. Bucci, 85, former resident of Hawthorne and Valhalla, N.Y., died Aug. 18 at Danbury Hospital. She was the widow of Anthony R. Bucci.
Mrs. Bucci was born May 26, 1915 in New York City, a daughter of the late Christian and Louise (Taubert) Bucci.
She had made her home in The Bronx until moving to Hawthorne and Valhalla, and later to New Milford.
Mrs. Bucci had been a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish of Valhalla and had developed a career as a secretary with B.O.C.E.S., and later at Westchester Community College.
She is survived by a son, John Bucci of New Fairfield; a sister, Katherine Maguire of The Bronx; three grandchildren, David of Providence, R.I., Cheryl Talarico of Oakville and Christopher of Salisbury, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Norman Gregory Bucci, in 1972.
