Marguerite Nelson, 84, had lived in New Milford
Marguerite E. Nelson, 84, formerly of New Milford, died Feb. 22 in Ft. Myers, Fla. She was the widow of Clarence R. Nelson.
Mrs. Nelson was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, June 29, 1916, a daughter of the late Arthur L. and Rosa Etta (Buck) Dougall.
At an early age her family moved to Maine, where she later graduated from State Street Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine.
She moved to New Milford after her marriage in 1946, where she was a resident for over 30 years before she moved to Florida in 1978. Mrs. Nelson worked for many years as a registered nurse at New Milford Hospital and later as a private school nurse before her retirement.
Mrs. Nelson made her home for many years, prior to her death, at the Shady Rest Nursing Home in Ft. Myers.
She is survived by a son, Charles and his wife Dale of Estero, Fla.; a daughter, Shirley Hatch and her husband Richard of New Fairfield; a brother, Homer Dougall of Waterford, N.Y.; a sister, Kathleen Madsen of Tavares, Fla.; four granddaughters, Rebecca and Suzanne Hatch and Christie and Holly Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, with the Rev. Patricia Nicholas, pastor of the Congregational Church of New Fairfield officiating. Interment will be in Center Cemetery, New Milford.
Friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home after 9:30 a.m. today.

Thomas Gillespie, 95, was active in civic groups
Thomas V. Gillespie of New Milford died Feb. 18 at the New Milford Nursing Home. He was the widower of Dorothy (Parsons) Gillespie.
Mr. Gillespie was born April 13, 1905, in Webster Grove, Mo.
In 1917, his family moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he graduated from Erasmus Hall High School. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1927 and later obtained his master’s degree from New York University.
He was a certified public accountant and had worked for Price Waterhouse & Co. and Tait, Weller, & Baker Co. Prior to his retirement in 1972, he was treasurer for the General Baking Co. and Diamond Expansion Bolt Co.
After his wife’s death, he moved to Chestnut Grove in New Milford. He helped to establish the Commission on Aging and was active for many years as a president, treasurer and campaign chairman of the United Way.
Mr. Gillespie was also an active member of the New Milford First Congregational Church.
He is survived by six nieces, Mary Carol Miller of Scarsdale, N.Y., Nancy Bennett of Surrey, England, Joan Diament of Vero Beach, Fla., Susan Moncure of Wilmington, Del., Judith Day of Walled Lake, Mich., and Barbara Otto of Loxahatchee, Fla.; and two nephews, Richard Swyers of Niskayuna, N.Y., and John Swyers of Nashville, Tenn.
Services will be held at the New Milford Center Cemetery in the spring.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford handled arrangements.

Nina Knopp, 77, mother of New Milford residents
Nina E. (Stith) Knopp, 77, of Windmill Road, Knollcrest, New Fairfield, died at New Milford Hospital Feb. 25. She was the wife of Walter A. Knopp.
Mrs. Knopp was born in Norristown, Pa., Sept. 18, 1923, the daughter of the late Van B. and Irma (Felton) Stith.
She later moved to Mount Vernon, N.Y., where she was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School. She was married in Mount Vernon Nov. 19, 1948.
She lived in Newtown before moving to New Fairfield in 1967 to a home they had as a summer home for several years.
Mrs. Knopp had worked with her husband at the Montgomery Ward Sales Agency and later devoted her life to her home and family. She was a former member of the Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury and was an avid UConn women’s basketball fan.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Walter "Scooter" Knopp of New Milford; two daughters, Linda Carbone and her husband Robert of Danbury and Nina Dunlap and her husband Gary of New Milford; a brother, Van B. Stith of Somers, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Gary and Tara Munsen, Jennifer, Meghan and Douglas Carbone and Christopher and Eric Dunlap; and nieces and nephews Walter "Butch" O’Connor, Barbara Ann Krasny, Van B. "Chip" Stith III and Patricia Lynn O’Neill.
The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury handled arrangements.

Josephine Clarkson, 79, mother of New Milfordite
Josephine A. Clarkson, 79, died at the Danbury Hospital Feb. 26 after a sudden illness. She was the wife of the late John J. Clarkson Sr. and made her home on Pocono Lane in Danbury.
Mrs. Clarkson was born in Yonkers, N.Y., Dec. 14, 1921, daughter of the late Harold and Helen Flood Bricker. She was a resident of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., until she moved to Danbury in 1977.
Mrs. Clarkson was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Danbury and a member of the Senior Center.
She is survived by her sons, Jack of North Salem, N.Y., and Richard of New York City; her daughters, Kathleen Clarkson of San Francisco, Linda Clarkson of New Milford and Marie Fitzgerald, with whom she made her home; three grandsons, Dennis and John Fitzgerald and Gregory Osborne; three granddaughters, Bethany Clarkson and Kelly and Dawn Fitzgerald; two step grandchildren, Jeffery Osborne and Jennifer Wykoff; three brothers, Raymond Bricker of Yonkers, Albert Bricker of Cromwell and Gerald Bricker of White Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Vivian McDonough of Yonkers and Dorothy Cullen of Pleasantville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Cottage Street, Danbury. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery.
The Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, is in charge of the arrangements.
Contributions may be made in Mrs. Clarkson’s memory to the Regional Hospice, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Fred A. Wilsea, 97, was an antique restorer
Fred A. Wilsea, 97, of 211 Kent Hollow Road, Kent, died March 2 at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon. He was the husband of Nancy (Hawley) Wilsea.
Mr. Wilsea was born June 11, 1903, in Goldens Bridge, N.Y., son of the late Carlos J. and Daisy (Wilson) Wilsea.
He had been a self-employed restorer of antiques most of his life and a Kent resident for more than 40 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a stepson, William H. Hawley Lang of Warren; and a grandson, William Hawley Lang Jr.
Burial will be in Kent Hollow Cemetery in the spring.
The Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford is in charge of the arrangements.

Marjorie Lombardi, 90, had lived in three area towns
Marjorie (Irwin) Lombardi, 90, died Feb. 6 at Harbor’s Edge in Delray Beach, Fla. She was the widow of Remo Lombardi and Frank Wells.
Mrs. Lombardi was born in Iowa and had lived in Minneapolis, Minn., Scarsdale, N.Y., Sherman, Washington and Warren.
She is survived by two step-children, Bonnell Lombardi and Carol Couch; four step-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated April 28 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Washington.

Norma J. Olsen, 80, mother of New Milford man
Mrs. Norma J. Olsen, 80, formerly of Clark Road, Pittsfield, Mass., who lived at Devonshire Estates for the past three years, died March 4 at the Berkshire Medical Center in Massachusetts.
She was born in Pittsfield July 26, 1920, the daughter of C. Edwin and Minnie E. Merrill King.
Mrs. Olsen graduated from Pittsfield High School, Class of 1938, and entered the employment of the General Electric Company in the accounting and payroll department.
She worked in both the Pittsfield General Electric and the Taunton, Mass., General Electric for 34 years.
She was later with the Raytheon Company in Stanford for 14 years, retiring from that position in 1982. She moved back to Pittsfield in 1983.
Mrs. Olsen was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational Church, in Pittsfield and the AARP.
She was the widow of William O. Olsen, whom she married Aug. 15, 1942. He died in 1992.
She is survived by two sons, Ralph W. Olsen of New Milford and Richard K. Olsen of Atlanta, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Debbie Boyer of New Milford and Christen Olsen of Atlanta.
Funeral services for Mrs. Olsen will be held today (Friday) at 11 a.m. at the Wellington Funeral Home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, with the Rev. Dr. Richard L. Floyd and the Rev. David Jordan officiating.
Burial will be in the Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Church of Christ, Congregational Memorial Fund, c/o the funeral home.

Laura Smalley, 93, grandmother of local woman
Laura G. Smalley, 93, formerly of Danbury, died March 3 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of the late Ferdinand H. Smalley.
Mrs. Smalley was born in Quebec, Canada, Aug. 30, 1907, a daughter of the late John and Albina (Pippin) Goodrow.
Mrs. Smalley grew up and attended schools in Canada. She lived in Massachusetts before moving to Danbury, where she had lived for over 40 years.
In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing.
Mrs. Smalley is survived by two granddaughters, Patricia Murphy of Wingdale, N.Y., and Justine Kenny of New Preston; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
The Colonial Funeral Home, 87 Park Lane Road, New Milford, is in charge of the arrangements.

Eleanor Humphrey, 84, had been a K-C employee
Eleanor Humphrey, 84, formerly of 158 Carriage Lane, Torrington, died Feb. 27 at Valerie Manor. She was the widow of Randolph Humphrey.
Mrs. Humphrey was born Jan. 13, 1917, in Torrington, daughter of the late Richard and Rose (Langanaro) Ferry.
She worked for several years at Kimberly-Clark in New Milford.
She is survived by eight grandsons, Kenneth Sr., Randolph Sr., Jeffrey, Charles Sr. and Michael, all of Torrington, Raymond Sr. of New Britain, David of Harwinton and Philip of Newington. She was predeceased by her sons Richard and Raymond Sr.
The Phalen Funeral Home of Torrington was in charge of arrangements.
