Lester Storms, 89, father of New Milford woman
Lester Raymond Storms, 89, of South Spring Garden Avenue, DeLand, Fla., died June 4 at his home.
Mr. Storms was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., moved to Brewster, N.Y., in 1946 and then to Florida in 1999.
He retired in 1996 after 30 years as a driver for Brad & Palmer Label Corp. in Carmel, N.Y. He was a member of St. Lawrence Church in Brewster and loved to walk his dog Patches.
Mr. Storms is survived by a son, Frederick of DeLand; six daughters, Mary Totten of Cornwall Bridge, Patricia Folchetti of Mahopac, N.Y., Rosemary Jones of Danbury, Virginia Bishop of Holmes, N.Y., Debbie Walsh of DeLand and Sharon Dean of New Milford; three brothers, Franklin of San Diego, Calif., William of Highland, N.Y., and Alfred of Poughkeepsie; 32 grandchildren; 87 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
There are no calling hours.
A graveside service will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at 11:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Brewster.

Nicole Godin, 19, was niece of Washington woman
Nicole Lynn Godin, 19, of Darlington, S.C., died June 6 in an auto accident.
Miss Godin was born Oct. 29, 1981, in Danbury, the daughter of Kevin Godin of Darlington and Violet (Searles) Godin of Cannon.
Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Dennise of Woodbury; a grandfather, Joseph of Woodbury; a grandmother, Betty Searles of Redding; four aunts, Sharon Opeil of Woodbury, Deborah Redman of Bethlehem, Lynn Bohan of Washington and Lynn Searles of Bethel; an uncle, William Searles of Redding; and several cousins.
Marie Steck, 98, was long active in community
Marie (Ippolito) Steck, 98, died June 8 at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of John F. Steck.
Mrs. Steck was born Jan. 15, 1903, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Vincent and Carmella (Guiffre) Ippolito.
She spent her early life in Waterbury, moving to New Milford in 1932. She was a longtime parishioner of St. John’s Episcopal Church and a member of the church’s choir.
She was an active volunteer with the Girl Scouts in New Milford. She was a member of the Metichewan Grange No. 190 of New Milford and a member of Armee Chapter No. 99, Order of the Eastern Star of New Milford. She was a longtime volunteer at New Milford Hospital and enjoyed painting, which she started at age 65.
Mrs. Steck is survived by five daughters, Marie Taylor of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Katherine Golembeski of Kent, Irene Olszanski of Escondido, Calif., Sandra Ladd of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and June Gawel of New Milford; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, John Jr., and a grandson, Glenn Winn Jr.

Mabel E. Crossmon, 90, lifelong Northville resident
Mabel E. Crossmon, 90, died June 4 in New Milford.
Miss Crossmon was born April 17, 1911, in Northville, the daughter of the late Morris E. and Bessie (Dean) Crossmon. She was a lifelong Northville resident.
She attended her first eight grades of school at the one-room schoolhouse near her home and graduated from New Milford High School.
She worked as a governess and briefly for some local manufacturing firms but devoted most of her life to her family and their small farm.
Mrs. Crossmon was part of the third generation of Crossmons to provide milk, eggs, fresh produce and a variety of services for the neighborhood.
She is survived by three nieces, Elizabeth Morse of Scottsdale, Ariz., Barbara Bassett of Sandwich, Mass., and Marilyn Cole of Richmond, Va.; a nephew, Edward Crossmon of Anchorage, Alaska; three great-nephews; a great-niece; and four great-great-nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Warren and Bradford.

Roger Curtis, 86, former New Milford Rotarian
Roger M. Curtis, 86, of 120 Lovely Lane, Greenwood, S.C., died June 9 at his home. He was the husband of Dorothy (Stenstream) Curtis.
Mr. Curtis was born in Stratford, a son of the late Maurice and Hannah (Wellington) Curtis.
He was a graduate of the American Academy of Accounting. He was a retired executive director of Interchurch Residences and in the retail furniture sales for 30 years.
Mr. Curtis was formerly employed by Remington Arms Company and Bay Division of Parke Davis, Bridgeport.
He was a former member of the New Milford Rotary Club, where he was former district treasurer, and the Greenwood Rotary Club. He was also a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife, Mr. Curtis is survived by two sons, Clifford of Portsmouth, R.I., and Wayne of Bethel; a brother, Arnold of Greenwood; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia Benes, 90, mother of New Milford woman
Virginia C. Benes, 90, of Bradenton, Fla., died June 5 in Manatee Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Benes was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. She lived in New Milford and Port Orange, Fla., before moving to Manatee County in 1991. She was a homemaker.
She was a life member of Stellar Chapter No. 55, Order of the Eastern Star in Danbury, a charter member of Port Orange United Church of Christ and an associate member of the Congregational United Church of Christ of Bradenton, Fla.
She is survived by a brother, William Raith of Dallas; a son, George Mauss of Manning, S.C.; two daughters, Gloria Ruhlmann of Bradenton and Dianne Lincoln of New Milford; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Manuel Fernandes, 70, father of New Milford men
Manuel Fernandes of Lousa, Portugal, died June 4 in Portugal. He was the husband of Julia Da Piedade Fernandes.
Mr. Fernandes was born Sept. 30, 1930.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Manuel and Jack of New Milford, Tony of Bethel and Joe of Danbury; four daughters, Lena Houser, Linda Wixted, Maria Taylor and Tina Aucella, all of Waterbury; and 21 grandchildren.
Services were held in Portugal.
June Mitchell, 72, was Weicker aide and active in local politics
June A. Mitchell, 72, formerly of New Milford and most recently of Marco Island, Fla., died June 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was the wife of Clarence C. Mitchell of New Milford and Marco Island.
She was born May 16, 1929, in Staten Island, N.Y. She married Mr. Mitchell in 1950.
Mrs. Mitchell moved to Danbury in 1949 and she and her husband moved to New Milford in 1958.
She was prominent in New Milford politics for many years. She served as the Republican town chairman for several years, was a member of the Charter Revision Commission and served the community in a variety of other ways.
Mrs. Mitchell was the administrative aide for 20 years for Lowell Weicker, the first two when he was a Congressman and for 18 years when he was a U.S. Senator from Connecticut.
She was a delegate to many state conventions, as well as the 1972 Republican National Convention.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Mitchell is survived by a son, Greg C. Mitchell of Arlington, Va.; two daughters, Marian Mitchell of New Milford and Sally Mitchell of Marco Island; a brother, Jay McAvoy of New Milford; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Justin and Katie Rose Mitchell. She was predeceased by a sister, Carole A. Naves of Danbury.
Following cremation, a service took place June 13 at San Marco Catholic Church in Marco Island.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in New Milford.
Jerry B. Farrell, 78, father of New Milford man
Jerry Farrell of Hawthorne, N.Y., died June 12 at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla.
Mr. Farrell was born in New York City July 14, 1922, to Bernard and Helen Farrell.
He moved to the Bronx in 1928 and then to Westchester in 1951 and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School.
He was retired from the Land Records Office in White Plains and The Journal News. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne.
Mr. Farrell is survived by three sons, Jerry of New Milford, Thomas of Bethel and Donald of Mahopac, N.Y.; a daughter, Dianne of Bethel; two grandchildren, Thomas and Kayla; a stepson, Chris Lee of Thornwood, N.Y., and stepdaughter, Lori of New Rochelle, N.Y.; also, Sean, Krystianne, Chris, Jack, Daria and Lauren; three brothers, Jack, Tom and Bob; two sisters, Helen O’Malley and Margaret McKeon; 28 nieces; and 39 grand-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his longtime companion, Betty Lee, and her son, Scott Lee.

Frances Lyons, 93, had been a New Milford resident
Frances E. Lyons, 93, of 49 Judson St., Canton, N.Y., died June 12 at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home. She was the widow of Leland Francis Lyons.
Mrs. Lyons was born April 17, 1908, in Watertown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Earl Albert and Harriet Mayer.
She graduated from Watertown High School in 1926 and from St. Lawrence University in 1930. She taught in Jefferson County before living in Watertown, Binghamton, Buffalo, Boston, Philadelphia, New York City and New Milford.
She was an avid golfer and bridge player and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of the Scarsdale Women’s Club, the Scarsdale Golf Club, and the Candlewood Lake Club in New Milford.
Mrs. Lyons is survived by two daughters, Joan Newman of Glens Falls, N.Y., and Katherine Metcalf of Canton; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lindsay Deery.
The funeral will be graveside today (Friday) at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.

Bernard J. McCarroll, 64, was an NMHS graduate
Bernard J. McCarroll, 64, of 2 Morton St., Danbury, husband of Frances (Gustems) McCarroll, died June 18 at Danbury Hospital.
He was born Jan. 17, 1937, in Danbury, a son of the late John and Leona (Levigne) McCarroll.
He was a graduate of New Milford High School and served in the U.S. Navy in the early 1960s. Mr. McCarroll was a longtime Risdon Corp. employee, retiring after 30 years of service.
Besides his wife, Mr. McCarroll is survived by a stepson, Richard Blankenship of Danbury; a stepdaughter, Deborah D’Amico of New Fairfield; two brothers, Philip McCarroll and Paul McCarroll, both of New Milford; four sisters, Patricia Martin of Florida, Jeanne Hulton of New Milford, Anne Adams of Bristol and Mary D’Emilio of New Milford; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, today (Friday) at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery in Danbury.
