Elsie O. Vidal, 86, mother of Bridgewater man
Elsie (Oliver) Vidal, 86, died Aug. 16. She was the wife of the late Manuel Vidal Jr.
Mrs. Vidal was the daughter of the late Ronald and Mary (Sylva) Oliver.
She was employed by the Barden Bearing Corp. in Danbury until her retirement over 20 years ago.
Mrs. Vidal is survived by two sons, Ronald and his wife Geraldine of New Britain and Gerald and his wife Barbara of Bridgewater; two brothers, Lewis Oliver of Mashpee, Mass., and William Oliver and his wife May of Danbury; a sister, Lillian Silva and her husband Lester of Mashpee; four grandchildren, Kimberly, Samuel, Catherine and Justin; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Robert.

Guy C. Tovino, 58, father of New Milford man
Guy C. Tovino, 58, of Danbury died Aug. 18 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Veronica M. (Sessa) Tovino.
Mr. Tovino was born Sept. 18, 1942, in Stamford, a son of the late Gaetano and Catherine (Charton) Tovino.
He worked for Liberty Motors of Bridgeport as an automotive car wholesaler for several years. He was a resident of Danbury for eight years. He was a member of the Fairfield County Street Rods and the Americo Vespucci Lodge of Danbury.
Besides his wife, Mr. Tovino is survived by three sons, Michael of Newport, R.I., Jay of Taos, N.M., and Gene of New Milford; a daughter, Vera of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; four sisters, Gail Somers of Palm Springs, Fla., Mitzi Chambers of Danbury, Kathy Delcarmine of Danbury and Michelle Antonelli of Trumbull; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Margo.

Christine Sheridan, 74, was Gaylordsville resident
Christine E. Brundage Sheridan, 74, of Gaylordsville died Aug. 20 at her home. She was the wife of the late Philip James Sheridan Jr.
She was born July 3, 1927, in Danbury, the daughter of the late Edwin and Christine Holick Brundage. She had lived most of her life in Norwalk and moved to Gaylordsville five years ago.
Mrs. Sheridan was a 1945 graduate of Norwalk High School and a 1948 graduate of the Norwalk Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a registered nurse, having worked at the Norwalk Hospital, private duty with the Norwalk Nursing Registry and also for the former Elmcrest Terrace Nursing Home.
Mrs. Sheridan was also a former member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Norwalk.
She is survived by a son, Philip James Sheridan III of Southbury; a daughter, Lynn C. Peet of Gaylordsville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Edwin Brundage, and a sister, Edwina Bass.
Services will be held today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk, with the Rev. Henry K. Yordon, pastor of the First Congregational Church on the Green, officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk.

Carol L. Manganaro, 57, was a New Milford native
Carol Lee Manganaro, 57, of 160 Brushy Hill Road, Newtown, died Aug. 18 at Bethel Health Care Center after a short illness with cancer. She was the wife of Salvatore Manganaro.
Mrs. Manganaro was born July 23, 1944, in New Milford, a daughter of Marion (Murphy) Slais of Woodbury and the late Real Thomas Quenneville.
Family members and friends say she will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, integrity and sense of humor.
Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a son, Kevin McKay; three daughters, Pattie Russo, Cathie Keeler and Leslie Capen; seven grandchildren, Michael Jr., Carolyn and Valerie Russo, Jessica and Thomas Keeler Jr., Jordan Lee McKay and Carrie Manganaro; two sisters, Lori Monti of Roxbury and Diane Tarrant of Pollock Pines, Calif.

John Scholl, 61, was active in Kent community
John Joseph Scholl, 61, of Fuller Mountain Road, Kent, died Aug. 20 at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was the husband of Marcia (Sturdevant) Scholl.
Mr. Scholl was born in Islip, N.Y., May 6, 1940, a son of Marjorie (Crane) Scholl of Newtown and the late Elwood Scholl.
He was a graduate of Fairfield Preparatory School, Fairfield, Class of 1958, and later attended Fairfield University.
He joined his father and brother in the family business, Scholl and Sons Meat Market in Bethel. In 1983, he became a real estate broker with Pepper-Scholl Real Estate in Sharon.
Mr. Scholl had been active in the communities of Bethel and Kent. He formerly served on the Board of Selectmen in Bethel and had been a member of the Board of Education in both Bethel and Kent.
He was a member and former president of the Kent Lions Club and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Kent.
Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Scholl is survived by two sons, John J. Scholl Jr. of Long Valley, N.J., and Stephen Scholl of Sharon; a daughter, Kristin Silvestri of New Fairfield; a sister, Sister Christel Scholl of Middletown; a brother, James Scholl of Bethel; and three grandchildren, Casey Scholl, Sean Silvestri and Molly Silvestri.
Interment was Sacred Heart Cemetery, Kent.

Nina Thorp, 94, was a longtime Kent resident
Nina (Dole) Thorp, 94, of 47 Maple St. Ext., Kent, died Aug. 17 at the New Milford Nursing Home. She was the widow of Henry K. Thorp.
Mrs. Thorp was born Dec. 30, 1906, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Haupt) Dole.
She spent her early life in Waterbury and was a graduate of Wilby High School. She moved to Kent in 1925 and worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Maxon Mills, Wassaic, N.Y.
She was an honorary member of Stellar Chapter No. 55 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Danbury.
Mrs. Thorp is survived by a daughter, Edith Altvater of Kent, and a granddaughter, Frances Altvater-Bernstein.

Alfreda Sabrina Mayo, 39, sister of New Milfordite
Alfreda Sabrina Mayo, 39, of Bethel died Aug. 15.
Ms. Mayo was born March 26, 1962, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., the daughter of Alfred Mayo of Danbury and the late Mary (Perkins) Mayo.
She was raised in Danbury and graduated from Danbury High School. She was employed by MCI-Worldcom as a teleconference technician. She enjoyed walking, jogging and listening to music.
Besides her father, she is survived by eight brothers, Frederick of New Milford, Danny of Ridgefield, Randy, Charles, Craig and Perry of Danbury, Tony of Washington, D.C., and Alton Little of Farmville, N.C.; a sister, Carolyn Murkland of Litchfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Talmadge.

Dr. John Byrne, 83, teacher
and involved in community
Dr. John A. Byrne, 83, of Hilton Head, S.C., formerly of New Milford, died Aug. 28 on Hilton Head Island. He was the husband of Joan (Carroll) Byrne.
Dr. Byrne was born in Newton, Mass., son of the late Thomas P. and Mary (Casey) Byrne.
He served with the Army Signal Corps during World War II, attached to the British forces under Admiral Louis Mountbatten in Southeast Asia.
He graduated from Babson College and received a master’s and a doctor’s degree from the George Washington University.
Dr. Byrne was professor emeritus at Western Connecticut State University, where he established the graduate program in business administration. He later taught for the University of Maryland in Bermuda.
Prior to teaching, he had a long career in intelligence with the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Md.
He was active in community affairs in New Milford for 24 years. He served on many committees and was a founding member and past president of the New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation.
He also served as chairman of the Board of Directors at The Pratt Center. He moved to Hilton Head in 1997.
Besides his wife, Dr. Byrne is survived by a daughter, Kathleen and her husband Jay Patchen of Davidsonville, Md.; a sister, Margaret Griffin of Cape Cod; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Richard.

John I. Price , 80, was a resident of Sherman
John I. Price , 80, of Sherman, died Aug. 29 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Ann (Lund) Price .
Mr. Price was born April 10, 1921, in Evanston, Ill., the son of William and Kathleen Price .
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a cryptographer with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Calcutta, India. Because of his pre-war experience as a drummer in jazz bands, he became a member of the “Bengal Tigers,” a dance band at the Army base.
He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. He worked in a variety of media with a concentration in painted collage and wood construction.
Mr. Price was employed as a town aid inspector for the Connecticut Department of Transportation for 25 years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, David of Wellfleet, Mass.; and a daughter, Margaret of Sherman.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Mary C. Zibell, 76, mother of Sherman man
Mary Catherine (Deming) Zibell, 76, of 739 West Main St., Cheshire, died Aug. 30 at St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. She was the widow of Frederick A. Zibell Sr.
Mrs. Zibell was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Waterbury, a daughter of the late William and Mary (Reilly) Deming.
She lived in Cheshire most of her life. She received her nursing degree in 1946 from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the hospital as a staff nurse for many years.
She enjoyed traveling and was active in The Church of the Epiphany, holding offices in the Ladies Guild and Parish Council. She also volunteered for the Chamber of Commerce.
Mrs. Zibell is survived by two daughters, Joyce and her husband Jim Hoben and Christine and her husband Ray Stewart, all of Cheshire; four sons, Frederick and his wife Paula and Brad and his wife Nanci, all of Cheshire, Paul and his wife Rose of Sherman and Michael of Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren, Sean, Kristen and Cara Murphy, Kim, Betsy and Kate Stewart, Matt, Jon, Josh, Adam, Nick, Rebecca Emily, Cory and Kyle Zibell; a brother, William and his wife Mary Deming of Northfield; and many nieces and nephews.
