Kenneth P. Sherwood Sr., 93, father of New Milfordite
Kenneth P. Sherwood, 93, of The Isles, Vero Beach, Fla., died Sept. 10 at Hospice in Florida. He was the husband of Gladys Sherwood and the late Florence (Kelly) Sherwood.
Mr. Sherwood was born April 11, 1908, in Pound Ridge, N.Y.
He was involved with Boy Scout Troop No. 77 and received many awards from Boy Scouts of America. He worked for SNET for over 40 years and was a member of The Pioneers of SNET.
Besides his wife, Mr. Sherwood is survived by a son, Kenneth Jr. and his wife Maryellen of Stonington; a daughter, Dianne Bongiorno and her husband John of New Milford; seven grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Natale.
A memorial service was held Sept. 18 at The First Congregational Church, New Milford. Burial was private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the VNA Hospice of one’s choice.

Marion C. Slais, 80, was a native of New Milford
Marion C. Slais, 80 of 19 Judson Ave., Woodbury, died Sept. 14 at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the wife of Frank P. Slais.
Mrs. Slais was born Oct. 15, 1920, in New Milford, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Mary Jane (Robinson) Murphy.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lori Monti of Roxbury and Diane Tarrant of Calif.; a brother, Fred Murphy; two sisters, Ada Mae Delancy of New Preston and Margaret Signorelli; eight grandchildren, Dean and Daryl Tarrant, Cathie Keeler, Pattie Russo, Kevin McKay and Christina, Lori and Heather Monti; six great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by a daughter, Carol McKay Manganaro.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Gilbert Sr., 59, father of Gaylordsville man
Robert V. Gilbert Sr., 59, of Chestnut Ridge Road, Bethel, died at Danbury Hospital Sept. 18. He was the husband of Judy M. (Gagnon) Gilbert.
He was born Feb. 13, 1942, in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. He spent most of his life was spent in the Danbury and Bethel areas.
Mr. Gilbert had been employed at LoStocco Motors as a delivery man.
Besides his wife, Mr. Gilbert is survived by a daughter, Michelle Gilbert of Danbury; two sons, Robert V. Gilbert Jr. of Naugatuck and William Gilbert of Gaylordsville; two sisters, Barbara Sikes of New Jersey and Patty Gilbert of New York; a brother, Richard Gilbert of Cuba; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family.

Oakley V. Haight III, 56, was Bridgewater resident
Oakley Valentine Haight III, 56 died Sept. 10. He was the husband of Mary (Heidel) Haight.
Mr. Haight was born June 21, 1945, in New York City, the son of Joan (Lake) Haight of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and the late Oakley V. Haight II.
He was educated in New York City as a child. The family then relocated to Connecticut, where he graduated from Norwalk High School and achieved the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout.
He followed in the footsteps of the two preceding Oakley Haights (both engineers), and studied mathematics at NYU and did postgraduate work in software engineering and data modeling.
As a computer consultant, he traveled throughout the United States and Europe assisting major corporations with the management of data and efficient utilization of resources.
Mr. Haight generously gave of his time and talents, assisting not only friends and family with their technology needs, but also new acquaintances.
He married Mary Heidel on July 28, 1991 in Broadus, Mont. They made their home in Bridgewater. His love of math, gourmet cooking, books, music and chess were extended to his son.
He was a member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees.
Besides his wife and his mother, he is survived by a son, Oakley Valentine Haight IV; a brother, Malcolm of Bethel; two sisters, Andrea Lee of Fairfield and Betty Jane Petronella of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; a daughter, Eleanor Curtis of Fredricksburg, Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by a sister, Joan.
The Green Funeral Home of Danbury handled arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bridgewater Congregational Church Music Fund; or to the Oakley V. Haight IV Educational Fund, c/o Kathy Graff, Rocky Mountain Bank, P.O. Box 347, Broadus, MT 59317.

George W. Lord Jr., 76, owned Country Maintenance
George Walker Lord Jr., 76, of New Milford, died Sept. 15 at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of the late Jean (Burke) Lord.
Mr. Lord was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Framingham, Mass., a son of the late George Walker and Eugenia (Wood) Lord Sr.
He was a graduate of the School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts at Stockbridge. He served as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force during World War II.
Mr. Lord had been a New Milford resident for over 45 years and owned and operated Country Maintenance. He was an active member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in New Milford.
He is survived by three sons, Timothy of New Milford, Gary of Washington and Lee of Roxbury; two brothers, Kenneth of Florida and Harry of Montana; three grandchildren; and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, 22 Old Park Lane Road, New Milford. The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the 4-H Foundation Scholarship Fund, 843 University Drive, Torrington, CT 06790; to the FFA Alumni Scholarship, c/o Nonnewaug High School, 4 Minortow Road, Woodbury, CT 06798; or to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, 22 Old Park Lane Road, New Milford, CT 06776.

Dr. Matthew Scott Sr., 85, was Odd Fellow member
Dr. Matthew W. Scott Sr., 85, of 8 Ridge Road, Danbury, died Sept. 12. He was the husband of Ellen V. Scott.
Dr. Scott was born March 5, 1916, and was a lifelong resident of Danbury. He graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and practiced podiatric medicine from 1940 until he was called into the Medical Army Branch.
He was initially inducted in 1941, and then again in 1942 to serve during World War II for the invasion of Italy and Normandy, and to accompany the troops moving into North Africa.
He operated his practice for 54 years with his first wife, Mabel Josephine (Hargreaves) Scott.
Dr. Scott was a former member of the First Congregational Church and an active member of the Danbury Progressive Lodge of the Odd Fellows and New Milford Encampment of Odd Fellows.
He was a member of the Lions Club, former secretary of the American Podiatry Medical Association, a member of the Podiatry Society and a member of the Mad-Hatters and Circle B Square Dance Clubs.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, Gordon of Venice, Fla.; a daughter, Margaret Dubrow of New Haven; two sons Dr. Matthew W. Scott and Dr. Charles W. Scott; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mabel.
The Tomlinson Homestead of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

Barry Burr, 82, was lifelong Washington resident
Barry D. “Bunker” Burr, 82, of Washington, died Sept. 15. He was the husband of Jean Ann (Jammy) Burr.
Mr. Burr was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Washington, where he was a lifelong resident.
A graduate of The Gunnery in Washington, he attended Wesleyan University for two years before serving in the Air Force during World War II as a radar operator on a B-29 in the Pacific Theater.
He was a Northeast sales manager for A. Finkl and Son in Chicago until his retirement. In the 1970s, he teamed up with Jim Goodale to start the Washington Youth Hockey program.
Besides his wife, Mr. Burr is survived by a daughter, Barrie Johnson; a brother, Perry Burr; a sister, Barbara; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church on the Green in Washington.

Dorothea Jackson, 99, was Bridgewater resident
Dorothea Rossbottom Jackson, 99, of Bridgewater, died Sept. 13 at New Milford Nursing Home. She was the wife of Murray D. Jackson.
Mrs. Jackson was born July 20, 1902, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late J. Joseph and Lillian (Kells) Rossbottom.
She attended schools in Brooklyn and Old Greenwich and was married in 1940.
She and her husband began their residence in Roxbury, mainly on the weekends, and made Bridgewater their permanent home in 1960.
Before moving to Connecticut, she volunteered at a hospital in New York City. She was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bridgewater and was a member of the Bridgewater-Roxbury Garden Club.
Besides her husband of 61 years, Mrs. Jackson is survived by a nephew, Thomas Rossbottom of Bridgewater.
At her request, there are no calling hours. Services will be at the convenience of the family.
The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean LeMien, 71, lived in Bridgewater
Betty Jean LeMien, 71, of Bridgewater, died Sept. 13 at her home. She was the wife of Henry L. LeMien Jr.
Mrs. LeMien was born Nov. 16, 1929, in Red Level, Ala., a daughter of the late Johnny and Hattie (Hartzog) Fendley.
She was a graduate of the Sisters of Charity City Hospital School of Nursing in Mobile, Ala., and was a United States Navy nurse during the Korean War.
She was employed as a staff nurse at Norwalk Hospital; Druid City Hospital, Alabama; Silver Hill Foundation, Connecticut; and the Devereaux Foundation, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. LeMien was a former resident of Charlestown, Pa., for 12 years and West Redding for 12 years.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. LeMien is survived by a son, Henry III of New Milford; a daughter, Deborah Ann Legg of Danbury; and four grandchildren.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Eyes, 79, was formerly of Bridgewater
Robert E. Eyes, 79, of Elon, N.C., died Sept. 16 at Chapel Hill Memorial Hospital, N.C. He was the husband of Barbara Eyes.
Mr. Eyes was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. He was a life member of the VFW Post No. 1672 of New Milford.
He was a member of the Bridgewater Fire Department and a past member of Odd Fellows and Palm Rebekah. He was an active member of the Bridgewater Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon and on the minister search committee.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Marie of Elon, Catherine Schinzel of Hampton, Minn., Christine Behnke of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Shirley Martin of Snow Camp, N.C.; a brother, Raymond of Westport; a sister, Margery DiTomaso of Oceanside, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jeanette Eyes-Holder.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Bridgewater Congregational Church with burial in Bridgewater Cemetery in the family plot.
The Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.
