Josephine M. Archibald, 89, lived in New Milford
Josephine Mary Archibald, 89, of New Milford, died Sept. 13 at the Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of Arthur D. Archibald.
Mrs. Archibald was born April 17, 1912, in Pound Ridge, N.Y., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Waite.
She resided in Greenwich for most of her life and moved to New Milford 30 years ago.
She is survived by a son, Arthur Jr. of Hyannis, Mass.; a daughter, Jane McGuinness and her husband Donald of Brookfield; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Rogers, 88, longtime New Milford resident
Raymond B. Rogers, 88, of New Milford died Oct. 28 in Little Falls Hospital, Little Falls, N.Y. He was the husband of Doris (Allmond) Rogers of Bantam.
Mr. Rogers was born May 12, 1913, in Newark, N.J., the son of Ward and Mildred (Cole) Rogers.
In his youth he worked as a truck driver for the town of Patterson, N.Y. For several years he was a manager for the Governor Thomas Dewey Farm in Pawling, N.Y. He later worked at the New Milford sewer plant for 25 years before retiring.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Lodge No. 65 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in New Milford for over 30 years.
Mr. Rogers was a member of the Connecticut Sheep Breeders Association and raised sheep on Blue Jay Farm in New Milford. He was a longtime member of Northville Baptist Church, New Milford.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Lois Ziolkowski of Dolgeville, N.Y., and Gloria Leavenworth of Watertown; a brother, Warren of New Milford; five granddaughters; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia (Holmes) Rogers.
The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Armstrong, 78, brother of New Milfordite
Frank R. “Chuck” Armstrong, 78, of Clematis Avenue, Waterbury, died Oct. 24 at Watertown Convalarium. He was the widower of Viola M. (Birdsall) Armstrong.
Mr. Armstrong was born March 31, 1923, in New Milford, son of the late Andrew and Maude (Rogers) Armstrong.
He was raised in New Milford and lived in Watertown before moving to Waterbury.
He was a sergeant in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Pearl Harbor before serving in the European Theater. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart in addition to numerous other medals.
Mr. Armstrong worked for CR&L Bus Lines for 28 years and retired in 1987 from ESP in Watertown.
He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, American Legion Post 195 in Oakville and Oakville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7330.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by a son, Charles of Chepachet, R.I.; three daughters, Allison of Waterbury, Susan Matula of Southbury and Catherine Savanella of Torrington; a brother, Andrew of New Milford; and five grandchildren.
The Hickcox Funeral Home of Watertown was in charge of arrangements.

Hedwig Schnitzel, 70, mother of New Milfordite
Hedwig E. (Ada) Schnitzel, 70, of Trumbull Drive, Newtown, died Oct. 24 at her home, following a brave battle with cancer. She was the wife of William R. Schnitzel.
Mrs. Schnitzel was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late John and Helen (Patuk) Goetz.
She was a resident of Newtown since 1967 and was employed as an administrative assistant at the Perkin-Elmer Corp. in Danbury for 18 years. Following her retirement from Perkin-Elmer Corp., she was employed as a secretary at the YMCA in Brookfield.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Linda-Ann Rose and her husband Dennis of Salina, Calif., and Jane Watrous and her husband David of New Milford; two sons, Richard and his wife Michele of Falmouth, Maine, and John and his wife Susan of Lancaster, N.Y.; two sisters, Ann Benanati of Kings Park, N.Y., and Blanche Goetz of New Hyde Park, N.Y.: four grandchildren, Richard Jr. and Kenneth Schnitzel, and Casey and Matthew Watrous; and several nieces and nephews.
The Honan Funeral Home of Newtown was in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Hardisty, 62, was sister of Warren man
Eleanor May Wolff (Mandela) Hardisty, 62, died Oct. 23 at her home in Woodbury after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of Garwin D. Hardisty.
Mrs. Hardisty was born Nov. 13, 1938, in Derby, a daughter of Ole J. and May H. Wolff currently of Huntington.
She grew up in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1956. For the past 33 years, she made her home in Southbury and Woodbury.
She worked for Regional School District 15 for eight years. In 1976, she left to build and run the Sherman House restaurant in Woodbury with her husband.
Among Mrs. Hardisty’s passions were her family, ballroom dancing, traveling and hiking in the woods. Her most outstanding travel memories include several trips to Europe with her daughters, and numerous motor home trips with her husband and beloved grandsons.
For many years, she and her family were active members of the Second Congregational Church of Derby. When they moved to Woodbury, the family joined North Congregational Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Audrey L. Mandela of London, England, and Debra L. and her husband Jeffery A. Meyers of Woodbury; a brother, Robert J. Wolff of Warren; a sister, Judy W. Soboleski of Trumbull; and two grandsons, Jonathan A. and Benjamin A. Meyers of Woodbury.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at the North Congregational Church in Woodbury, Connecticut.
The Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere is in charge of arrangements.

Frazier R. Purdy, 71, was Roxbury resident
Frazier Rodney Purdy, 71, of Roxbury died Oct. 27 at his home. He was the husband of Susan (Soroko) Purdy.
Mr. Purdy was born in 1929 in New York City, son of the late Harris Leavitt and Mary Irene (Long) Purdy.
He was raised in Westport and graduated from Staples High School. After serving as a sergeant in the Army, he went to work for Lennen and Mitchell in New York City as a studio artist in 1952.
He later joined Young and Rubicam as an assistant director and later served as senior vice president, creative director, executive vice president and executive creative director, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Purdy enjoyed automobile restoration, woodworking, watercolor painting and etching.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Mark, Kevin and Christopher; a twin sister, Noah Politi of Southbury; three grandchildren; and his former wife, Joan Wolverton Smith Purdy.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford.

Memorial service set for June A. Mitchell
A celebration of life will be held in memory of June A. Mitchell, wife of Clarence C. Mitchell Jr.
Mrs. Mitchell died June 7 in Florida.
The memorial mass will be held Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, New Milford. It will be followed by a reception at the Holiday Restaurant, hosted by the Mitchell and McAvoy families.

Edith M. Pollitt, was mother of Sherman woman
Edith (McGann) Pollitt, of 13 Richter Drive, Danbury, died Oct. 23 after an extended illness. She was the wife of Wesley P. Pollitt.
Mrs. Pollitt was a World War II war bride and was married in the chapel at Camp Haan, Calif., with the full support of Battery B, 822nd AW Bn (AA) and a large quantity of beans in lieu of rice.
She resided in Maplewood, N.J., after the war until 1975.
She was an active volunteer in church and community affairs. As a volunteer Red Cross nurses’ aide and worked countless thousands of hours in the Hospital Center at Orange and in the recovery room of Danbury Hospital.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Danbury and was a longtime volunteer for the Thrift Shop. She was an enthusiastic member of the Woman’s Club of Danbury/New Fairfield.
Mrs. Pollitt loved to cook and was an expert seamstress and needlepointer. According to one granddaughter, she was “the best cooker alive” and was presented a diploma for that skill.
She loved the beach and spending time at the family camp on Mallets Bay, Lake Champlain, Vt. She loved to fish and was an expert eel skinner.
Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Lynn E. von der Linden of Mountainside, N.J., Judith A. Witters of Sherman and Jan Putnoky and Karen Fowler of Westfield, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 11:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, Deer Hill Avenue, Danbury. A reception will follow at 13 Richter Drive, Danbury.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Jason Croteau, 38, was a New Milford resident
Jason Andrew Croteau, 38, of 17 Saddle Ridge Road, New Milford, died Oct. 29 at New Milford Hospital.
Mr. Croteau was born March 4, 1963, in Keene, N.H., a son of Gale and Brenda (Flanders) Croteau of New Milford.
He was a graduate of New Milford High School, Class of 1981, after which he attended Western Connecticut State University and Teiko Post University in Waterbury.
He formerly worked as an administrative assistant in the human resources department at GE Capital in Danbury.
Mr. Croteau had recently been employed as an assistant chef at Boulders Inn in Washington. He had served in the U.S. Air Force from 1981 to 1985.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister, Sarah of New Milford; his paternal grandmother, Sybil Croteau of East Swanzey, N.H.; his maternal grandfather, Victor Flanders of Athol, Mass.; and his maternal grandmother, Elaine Flanders of Keene, N.H.
A memorial mass will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford. There are no calling hours.

Bruno A. Malanca, 84, was father of Roxbury man
Bruno A. Malanca, 84, of Lovely Street, Winsted, died Oct. 28 at St. Catherine’s Hospital, Smithtown, N.Y. He was the husband of Josephine (Cannavo) Malanca.
Mr. Malanca was born March 1, 1917, in Torrington, son of the late Ralph and Arista (Graziani) Malanca.
He lived most of his life in Winsted. He was a veteran of World War II and worked at the Torrington Co. for 25 years. He was a member of Norfolk Trout Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dante of Winsted and Ralph of Roxbury; a daughter, Angela Sinclair of Smithtown; two sisters, Amelia Re and Agnes Magistrali of Torrington; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandsons.
The funeral will be held today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at Maloney Funeral Home, 55 Walnut St., Winsted. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
