Emily Hopson, 99, Kent’s ‘Citizen of the Century’
Emily Mills Hopson, 99, of the Macedonia District of Kent died Jan. 1.
Miss Hopson was born Nov. 7, 1902, in New London, daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Hopson.
She was raised in New London, graduated from Smith College in 1923 and from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in personnel management.
She worked in Brooklyn and at G. Fox and Co. in Hartford, where she became the principal buyer for the gift department.
She retired in 1970 to a cabin she and some friends had built. She traveled to Central America, the Balkans and the Orient.
Miss Hopson was a descendant of Kent’s Hopson family, whose fortune was made in the 19th century iron industry of Northwest Connecticut.
She served as president of the Kent Historical Society, which was founded by her cousins, until shortly before her death. She was also the official town historian.
She was a major benefactor of the Kent Memorial Library and the Kent Art Association. She was a founding director of the Kent Land Trust and director and secretary of the Pond Mountain Trust. She was the founder of the Kent Children’s Center in 1977.
Miss Hopson was instrumental in the acquisition, restoration and preservation of three Revolutionary-era buildings in town: Seven Hearts, in the Flanders District; the one-room schoolhouse on Skiff Mountain; and the Swift House, which she persuaded the town to restore under her supervision.
The Kent selectmen named her “Citizen of the Century.”
Miss Hopson is survived by her Harper, Nisbet and Tully cousins.
Burial was private, and at her request no memorial service will be held. A town gathering is scheduled for Feb. 2 at the Swift House in the center of Kent.

Marian E. Jennings, 90, lifelong Kent resident
Marian (Eaton) Jennings, 90, of 30 Elizabeth St., Kent, died Jan. 4 at Sharon Hospital. She was the wife of Amos E. Jennings.
Mrs. Jennings was born Aug. 25, 1911, in Kent, daughter of the late Reuben and Nettie (Parsons) Eaton. She was a graduate of the former Kent High School.
She was employed as a bookkeeper for several local businesses in Kent and for many years as dispatcher for both the fire department and the ambulance service in Kent.
She was a longtime parishioner of St. Andrew’s Church in Kent.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Jennings is survived by a son, Russell; a daughter, Marcia Glynn; and two grandchildren, Ellen and Kimberly of Kent.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Conklin, 66, mother of New Milfordite
Margaret L. Conklin, 66, of Golden Hill Street, Bethel, died Jan. 6 at her home. She was the widow of Fred G. Conklin Sr.
Mrs. Conklin was born Feb. 6, 1935, in Derby.
She lived on Golden Hill Street for the past 40 years and devoted her life to her family and her home. She attended St. Mary Church.
Mrs. Conklin is survived by three sons, Fred Jr. of Florida, John of Bethel and George of Danbury; six daughters, Margaret of Canada, Mildred of Maine, Shirley Spencer of Danbury, Cindy Clark of New Milford, Jean Murray of Bethel and Barbara Savage of Waterbury; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, James, Ernie and George Regan of Derby and David Regan of California; three sisters, Eloise Ballard, Barbara Regan and Cathy Malerba of Derby; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Licthenburger; a brother, William Regan; and a sister, Millie Delvecchia.
The Cornell Memorial Home of Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

William Logue, 86, was resident of New Milford
William T. Logue, 86, formerly of 19 Duncan Lane, New Milford, died Jan. 4 at the New Milford Nursing Home. He was the widower of Lucille (Yates) Logue.
Mr. Logue was born April 8, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of the late Thomas Basil and Mary Agnes (Cooney) Logue.
He was a graduate of White Plains High School and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army.
He was employed for many years by the Sandy Hook Fire Hose Company and Branson Sonic. He was also a security guard for the Danbury Fair Mall.
Mr. Logue is survived by a daughter, Susan of Portchester, N.Y., and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

William Morton, 95, grandfather of New Milfordite
William J. Morton Jr., 95, of Sandy Hook died Jan. 1 at Heritage Heights Care Center, Danbury. He was the widower of Ethel E. (Hendrick) Morton.
Mr. Morton was born June 26, 1906, in Norwalk, the son of the late William J. and Mary Ellen Silk Morton Sr.
He was a self-employed sheet metal worker most of his life.
He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Reardon of Woodbury; five grandchildren, Kevin Reardon of East Granby, Keith Reardon of Brewster, Mass., Bruce Reardon of Monroe, Craig Reardon of New Milford and Patricia Reardon of Woodbury; four great-grandchildren; and three nieces.
The Raymond Funeral Home of Norwalk handled arrangements.

John R. Jewett, 80, was a New Milford resident
John R. Jewett, 80, of Hillendale Drive, New Milford, died Jan. 7 at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Polly Jewett.
Mr. Jewett was born March 14, 1921, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., son of the late Everell Willis and Abigail (Kincaid) Jewett. He attended Purdue University and received a degree from Ohio University.
In 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps Reserve. During the war served in the Pacific theater with the 9th Bomb Group on the Pacific island of Tinian. He received the Purple Heart.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Washington, where he served on many boards and taught Sunday school.
Besides his wife of 58 years, Mr. Jewett is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Jewett and Jacque Jewett; two daughters, Sandra Bishop and Marsha LaPoint; a brother, E. Willis Jewett of Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m. in the meetinghouse of the First Congregational Church on the Green in Washington.

Frances Appleyard, 70, mother of area residents
Frances R. Appleyard, 70, of 14 Washington Ave., Torrington,died Jan. 1 at Wolcott Hall.
Mrs. Appleyard was born Dec. 10, 1931, in the Bronx, N.Y., daughter of the late Frank and Sarah (Balance) Doyle.
She moved to Torrington from Tennessee three years ago.
She is survived by two sons, Scott and Christopher of Tennessee; two daughters, Lisa of New Milford and Donna Buswell of New Preston; and a brother, James Doyle of Tennessee. She was predeceased by a son, Keith Barden.

Adele Duffy, 76, former Washington resident
Adele G. (Martin) Duffy, 76, of Butter Road, Sharon, died Jan. 4 at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Canaan. She was the widow of William Duffy, Robert Goodsell and Donald MacDonell.
Mrs. Duffy was born July 18, 1925, in New York City, daughter of the late Charles and Mary (LaRouche) Martin.
She moved to Washington Depot when she was 2, graduated from Washington High School in 1943, married Donald MacDonell in 1945 and raised her family on Dodge Farm. She moved to Sharon in 1975.
She was a charter member of American Legion Auxiliary Gage-Zumpf Post No. 87, a member of the Washington Grange and an avid fan of her family’s teams at Washington High School and Shepaug Valley Regional High School.
Mrs. Duffy was a member of the National Audubon Society.
She is survived by four daughters, Donna MacDonell of Bloomfield, Jean MacDonell of Sharon, Paula Shanks of Paradise, Pa., and Susan MacDonell of Thomaston; a brother, Joseph Martin; and seven grandchildren.

Alexander ‘Disco’ Stewart, 88, was New Milford man
Alexander “Disco” P. Stewart, 88, of New Milford, formerly of New York, died Dec. 1 at New Milford Hospital.
Mr. Stewart was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Pawtucket, R.I., the son of the late Donald and Mary (Murray) Stewart.
He was raised in Rhode Island and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and was employed by LoBiondo Bros. in New Jersey. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 707.
He enjoyed watching all sports and was an avid Red Sox fan.
Mr. Stewart is survived by four sons, Donald and his wife Natalie of Plainville, Mass., Francis and his wife Jean of St. Petersburg, Fla., Joseph and his wife Paula of New Milford and Patrick of Danbury; a daughter, Marie Knopp of New Fairfield; an adopted son, Peter Kolvik of New Fairfield; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Ida Weiss, 95, mother of New Milford woman
Ida W. Weiss, 95, of Stamford died Jan. 1 at Courtland Gardens Health Center, Stamford. She was the widow of Charles Weiss.
Mrs. Weiss was born March 23, 1906, in Flint Hill, Mo., daughter of the late Alexander and Eleanora (Dickhaus) Wilzer.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church of Stamford. She was a member of St. Ann’s Society, the Over Sixty Club, the Springdale Senior Club and the Shepards of Bethlehem No. 52.
She is survived by two daughters, Johanna of New Milford and Malinda Mable of Waterbury; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Gerald.
