Wilfred Gamble
Wilfred Gamble of Tenants Harbor, Maine, former principal of a Southbury elementary and two Danbury elementary schools, died Sunday at his home. He was 89.
Mr. Gamble was the husband of Irene Gamble of Tenants Harbor.
He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, April 26, 1908. He apprenticed as a cabinetmaker at Harland & Wolfff shipyard in Belfast at age 14.
He moved to America in 1929 at age 21. He attended high school in Binghamton, N.Y., and earned a master's degree in education from Columbia University in 1938.
He began his education career as principal of Lincoln School in Marion, Ala., a private school for black children. One of his students, Coretta Scott, became the wife of Martin Luther King Jr..
In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. Upon discharge in 1945, he went to Southbury and became principal of its elementary school and then two Danbury elementary schools in 1950. He also taught children's literature at Danbury State College. After retiring in 1975, Roberts Avenue School in Danbury commissioned a lobby mural of him reading to children. He was active in local government, moderating many town meetings, and serving the Town of Southbury in many capacities, including as selectman.
Mr. Gamble and his wife summered in Maine, and moved to Tenants Harbor permanently in 1980. He was a collector of and very knowledgeable about Irish literature.
A great raconteur, he was never at a loss for a story, song or poem and he entertained at St. Patrick's Day and other events. He also was Santa Claus a at Christmas fair for many years. He was an active member of the Rockland Rotary and a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Rockland.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Kahn of Union, Maine; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many cousins in both America and Ireland.

Matthew Peretti
Matthew A. Peretti of Taylor Avenue, Bethel, died Tuesday at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was 15.
Matthew was born in Danbury, Nov. 8, 1982, a son of Christopher R. Peretti of Bethel and the late Rosemary Stipo Peretti, who died last December. A Bethel native, he was an eighth-grade student at Bethel Middle School.
Besides his father, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Rose Stipo of White Plains, N.Y.; a brother, Kevin R. Peretti of Bethel; and a step-brother, Jason A. Wyga of Ocala, Fla.

Katherine Kuehne
Katherine Kuehne, formerly of 93 Park Ave., Danbury, died Monday at Filosa Convalescent Home. She was 81.
Miss Kuehne was born in New York City, March 9, 1916, a daughter of Herman W. and Anna M. Kast Kuehne. She was educated in New York City schools and graduated for the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. Upon graduating, she went to work for Williams & Watts of New York. After leaving, she went to work as an administrative assistant for the publisher and editor of Fortune and Time magazines.
She was a Danbury resident for the past 20 years.
Survivors include a sister, Clara Apger of Arleta, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.

Elenore Henry
Elenore H. Henry of Bethel died Sunday at Danbury Hospital. She was 83.
Mrs. Henry was born in Bridgeport, Feb. 11, 1918, a daughter of the late Stanislaus and Stella Zelinski Kolwicz. She was reared and educated in Danbury and had lived in Bethel for 46 years. She worked for the Mideastern Envelope Co. of Danbury for 25 years, retiring 15 years ago.
She was a member of the Bethel Historical Society, a member of the ORder of the Eastern Star and a former member of the Bethel Business and Professional Women's Association.
Survivors include a son, Jack Henry of Shelton; a daughter, Kaye Wood of Brookfield; and five grandchildren.

Emma M. Grega
Emma M. Grega of Fairfield, died in Bridgeport Hospital Tuesday. She was the wife of Emil Grega of Fairfield.
Mrs. Grega, a lifelong Fairfield resident, was a member of the Fairfield-Westport Organ Guild. She played the organ in St. Patrick's Church, Redding for the past 21 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Thomas; and four daughters, Barbara Carroll, Mary Lyons, Kathy Fish and Beth Lambert, all of Fairfield.

Philip Barksdale
Philip Lawrence Barksdale of Frenchman Road, New Milford, died Tuesday at his home. He was 79.
He was the husband of Elaine Arrigoni Barksdale.
He was born In Afton, Va., July 11, 1918, a son of the late Herber and Minnie Ola Sandridge Barksdale.
Mr. Barksdale served the 1060th Amry Air Force base unit during World War II. After the war, he served as sergeant with the 177th AAA Operations Detachment Artillery in the Virginia National Guard.
A retired forester, he worked for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. He was a New Milford resident for the past 29 years. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Washington, Conn.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Matthew and Scott of New Milford, and Maurice of Portland; two daughters, Helen and Stephanie of New Milford; and eight grandchildren.

Jennie Schaufler
Jennie P. Schaufler of Palm City, Fla., formerly of Danbury and New Fairfield, died Monday at Martin Memorial Medical Center North in Stuart, Fla. She was 72.
She was the widow of Frank H. Schaufler, who predeceased her last July.
Originally from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Mrs. Schaufler lived in Danbury and New Fairfield before moving to Florida in 1982. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and its Ladies Guild in Palm City.
Survivors include a son Frank of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Carol Ann Corcoran of New Milford; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Douglas McGregor Jr.
Douglas McGregor Jr. of Limestone Road, Ridgefield, died Monday at Northern Westchester Hospital, Mt. Kisco, N.Y. He was 63.
Mr. McGregor was the husband of Betsey Said McGregor.
He was born in Longmeadow, Mass., Nov. 26, 1934, a son of Dorothy Otstot McGregor of Rochester, N.Y., and the late Douglas McGregor Sr. He was reared and educated in Longmeadow. He attended the Phillips Academy and received a bachelor's of science degree in engineering from Yale University.
He was a peacetime U.S. Navy veteran.
Mr. McGregor worked for the Allied Signal Corp. of Sylmar, Calif., from 1957 to 1997, retiring as director of marketing. He lived in Ridgefield for the past six years, and was previously of Pleasantville, N.Y.
Besides his wife of 36 years and his mother, he is survived by a brother, Donald of Raleigh, N.C., and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Stuart, in 1988.

Thomson Baillie
Thomson F. Baillie of Old Hawleyville Road, Bethel, died Monday at his home. He was 72.
Mr. Baillie was the husband of Mary (Creighton) Baillie of Bethel.
He was born in Paisley, Scotland, a son of the late Andrew and Agnes (Fergus) Baillie. He was reared and educated in Scotland. Mr. Baillie moved to the United States in 1952 and was a Bethel resident for the past 38 years. A union electrician, he was a member of the IBEW Local No. 488.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Scott of Danbury and Robert of Woodstock, Ga.; two daughters, Linda O'Regan of Covington, La., and Joyce Sayers of Danbury; a brother, Robert L. Baillie of Paisley; two grandsons, a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Erich Hartlieb
Erich Hartlieb, a self-employed plumbing and heating contractor, died Tuesday.
A longtime resident of New Fairfield, Mr. Hartlieb was the husband of Ernestine Hartlieb.
He was a member of the Danbury Elks Club.
Besides his wife of more than 50 years, Mr. Hartlieb is survived by three sons, John, George and Brian; and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth Baker
Elizabeth ``Betty'' Baker, 71, a lifelong resident of Patterson, died Wednesday at the Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel.
Mrs. Baker was the wife of the late Hollis H. Baker Sr.
She was born in Patterson, Sept. 26, 1926, a daughter of Ferris and Ruth Dykeman Sprague Sr.
Mrs. Baker was a former member of the Patterson Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Christ Church Guild of Patterson. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Patterson.
Her survivors include a son, Hollis H. Jr. of Patterson; two daughters, Laura Brunow and Linda Baker, both also of Patterson; a sister, June Brill of Pawling; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy May Vitti
Dorothy May Eberhardt Vitti, 71, a longtime resident of Stamford before moving to Danbury, died Wednesday at her home.
Mrs. Vitti lived at 20 Shady Acres, Miry Brook Road, Danbury. She was the wife of John Vitti.
She was born in Stamford, Feb. 12, 1927, a daughter of William B. and Estelle Eberhardt.
Before her retirement at age 65, Mrs. Vitti was employed by Omega Engineering of Stamford.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, John and Roland, both of Danbury; two sisters, Viola Coppola of Stamford and Beatrice Calzone of Norwalk; three brothers, Harold of Ridgefield, Robert of Stamford, and Edward of Clearwater, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Maroon J. Shaheen
Maroon ``Morris'' J. Shaheen, 74, brother of Adele Simon of Danbury and a former Danbury resident, died Feb. 16 in Fall River, Mass.
Mr. Shaheen, of 74 Quequechan St., Fall River, was the husband of Annie Joseph Shaheen.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., he was a son of Joseph and Sabath Kalil Shaheen. He was a Danbury resident for a few years but lived in Fall River for most of his life.
He served in the U.S. Navy for 15 years.
He was a member of St. Anthony of the Desert Church.
Besides his wife and sister, Mr. Shaheen is survived by a son, Joseph of Fall River; a brother, George of Norwood, Mass.; another three sisters, Helen Sahady, Lillian Ameen, and Rose Shaheen, all of Fall River; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen H. Miller
Helen H. Koepper Miller, 73, a finance and accounting supervisor, died Monday at Tampa Hospital, Tampa, Fla.
Mrs. Miller, of Putnam Lake, N.Y., was the wife of William R. Miller Jr. who she married in 1994. She was predeceased by her first husband, Henry Koepper, in 1986.
She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Oct. 24, 1924, a daughter of Carl and Henrietta Keiling Behrmann. She attended Walton High School and Bronx area schools. She lived in the Bronx until moving to Putnam Lake 50 years ago.
Mrs. Miller was employed at Guideposts in Carmel, N.Y. She previously worked at Green Chimneys School in Brewster.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #9257, the Brewster Elks Ladies Club Lodge #2101, the Putnam Lake Senior Citizens, and the Patterson Senior Citizens. She was also a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Brewster.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Miller is survived by a son, Richard H. Koepper of Johnson City, Tenn.; two stepsons, William R. Miller III of New Fairfield and Joseph Miller of Wingdale, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Judith Dedrick of Lake Carmel; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
