Erna Klose
Erna Klose, 80, of West Redding, died on Thursday (June 4) at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late Werner J. Klose. Mrs. Klose was born in Wriezen, Germany, on October 29, 1917, a daughter of the late Paul and Minna Kranz Jammermann. She previously lived in Florida and New York City and has been a resident of West Redding for 5 1/2 years. She is survived by two daughters, Marion Mueller of West Redding and Ellinor E. Allen of Spencer, Mass.; two sisters, Anne Jammermann of New York City and Charlotte Kuhn of Germany; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services and interment are to be private. There are no calling hours. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Klose may be made to a local A.S.P.C.A. or a charity of one's choice. Milo 'Gimble' Morrell
Milo "Gimble'' H. Morrell, 72, of Moriah, N.Y., died at his home on June 3rd. He was born in Greenwich, Conn., on Sept. 26, 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a painter in Stamford for 35 years. He is survived by a son, Gary of California; a daughter, Ann Morrell of Stamford; a sister, Joan Fletcher of Delaware; two brothers, Richard of Moriah and Douglas of Danbury; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. There will be a service at the Harlan Funeral Home of Moriah, N.Y., on June 6th at 2:00. There are no calling hours. Cremation to follow at the convenience of the family.
Paul J. Allen
Paul J. Allen, 89, of 171 North Salem Road, Ridgefield, formerly of Boca Raton, FLA, died on Sunday at the Danbury Hospital shortly after his admission. He was the husband of the late Marcella (Capewell) Allen who died in June of 1996. Mr. Allen was born in Roebling, N.J., April 1, 1909, a son of the late Samuel and Reba (Nixon) Allen. He attended Roebling schools and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where he was president of his class. A resident of Ridgefield since 1992 coming from Boca Raton, FLA, Mr. Allen was a retired director of marketing for the Domino Sugar Company. He was a member of the Ridgefield O.W.L.S. and an avid traveler. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law; Barbara A. and J. Roger Guilfoyle of Ridgefield, a brother and sister-in-law; Earl and Sally Allen of Cinnaminson, NJ, a grandson and his wife; John-Paul and Christine Guilfoyle and a great-granddaughter; Margaret Rose Guilfoyle, all of Ridgefield. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday at 11:30 AM in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Ridgefield with the Rev. John R. Gilchrist, rector, officiating. Burial will rake place in Beverly Cemetery, Beverly, New Jersey. Friends will be received in the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Monday from 5 to 8 PM. Mildred Foster
Mildred Foster (nee Hassiak) died peacefully at Glen Hill Convalescent Center in Danbury on June 4th. She was born on July 16, 1901 in New Milford and lived much of her life in the Danbury/Bethel area. She is survived by a son, Edward of Redding, two granddaughters, Sandra Swindler of Sarasota, FL and Mary Foster of Tokyo, Japan, and four great-grandchildren: Margaret, Douglas, Laura and Matthew Swindler. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, June 10, at St. Peter's Church, Danbury. She will be buried beside her husband, John, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y.
John K. Parsons Sr.
John K. Parsons Sr., 84, of 30 Highland Ave., Bethel, died at his home on Saturday. He was the husband of the late Helen M. Benjamin Parsons. Born in Bethel, CT. November 6, 1913 a son of the late Grover and Margaret Schirmer Parsons. Resident of Bethel most of his life. Mr. Parsons was employed by the former Bard Parker Manufacturing from the age of 15 until he retired in 1973. Mr. Parsons was later employed by Hughes Optical as a security guard. Mr. Parsons is survived by a son John K. Parsons Jr., Bethel, two daughters Cindy Strout, Bethel and Joan Gebert, Bethel, a brother Wilson Parsons, Bethel, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary's Church, Bethel, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Cremation will take place in Ferncliff Crematory, Hartsdale, New York. Dwight R. Bertozzi, 65, of 112 Hoyt's Hill, Bethel, died at Danbury Hospital on Sunday. He is the husband of Peggy Roew Bertozzi. Born January 19, 1933 in Norwalk, Ct. a son of the late Guido G. and Lucille Mazzela Bertozzi, Sr. Resident of Bethel since the age of 7. Graduate Henry Abbott Tech, Danbury, where he played basketball under coach Dan Garnella. Co-Owner LaSelva/Bertozzi Builders for several years. Past member of the local labor and a member of the American Legion Post 100 in Bethel. Besides his wife Dwight is survived by 3 sons Dwight R. Bertozzi Jr., Needham, MA, David Bertozzi, Bethel, CT and Tom Hall, Bethel, CT, 2 daughters Carol Kuczko, New Milford, CT and Darlene Foster , Bethel, CT, a brother Guido Bertozzi Jr., Danbury, CT three sisters Lizabeth Ottavio, Danbury, CT. Dolores Michael and Mary Ann Molinaro both of Bethel, a life long friend Walt Pinkos, Danbury, CT, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Doris S. Nash
Doris S. (Svensson) Nash of 80 Wildwood Rd., Andover, MA, died at home Thursday evening, June 4, 1998. She was 56. Mrs. Nash had resided in Andover for the past twenty-eight years. She was born in New York City, and was raised in Danbury, CT. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Grace-New Haven School of Nursing in New Haven, CT. She was subsequently a Nurse at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City, a Head Nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT, and a Visiting Nurse in Reading, MA. Mrs. Nash was a devoted homemaker and she was active in Andover charitable activities in the 1970s and 1980s. In recent years, she took courses at Harvard Extension School and served as a volunteer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Museum of Fine Arts. She is survived by her husband, Raymond A. Nash, Jr. of Andover, MA, a son Robert also of Andover, a daughter Carolyn Nash of San Francisco, CA, a cousin Eleanor O'Neil of Port Washington, NY and numerous relatives in Sweden. Charles W. Treat
Charles W. Treat, age 95, of 52 Marwick Manor, New Milford, former New Milford building inspector, died Friday at Candlewood Valley Care Center, New Milford. Husband of the late Gwendolyn Todd Treat, he was born in Bridgewater, Oct. 21, 1902, a son of the late Harmon W. and Annie Bain Treat. He spent his early years in Bridgewater and was for many years a builder in the area. He became the New Milford building inspector in 1959, retiring in 1978. He was a longtime member of the New Milford Rotary Club and became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1996. He was a member of St. Peter's Lodge -21, A.F. & A.M. of Masons, and was the lodge's oldest living past master. He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of New Milford. He was a direct descendent of Robert Treat, a colonial governor of Connecticut. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Abigail Stecewicz of New Milford; & a granddaughter, Andrea O'Neil of Westborough, Mass.; Funeral services on Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, New Milford. Henry Garvey Jr.
Henry "Hank" Hulton Garvey, Jr., 65, of New Milford, passed away early Saturday morning, June 6, 1998, after a short illness. Hank was at home with his family at his side. He was the beloved, for 36 years, to Jeanne (Wolter) Garvey, Connecticut State Representative. Son of the late Henry H. Sr. and Kathryn (Hyland) Garvey, he was born October 11, 1932, in New Milford, CT. Hank graduated from New Milford High School in 1951 and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He received an Associate's Degree in Chemistry from Danbury State Teacher's College and attended the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Throughout most of his career, Hank worked in manufacturing. He was employed for 26 years by Scovill Manufacturing-Century Brass Products. In 1986, Hank and Jeanne built commercial property on Route 7, and for a time owned and operated Sunny Valley Market and Deli. Hank later returned to manufacturing, and most recently worked for Alves Precision Engineered Products, where he was second shift foreman. Hank was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Church of New Milford. Hank was an avid outdoorsman who spent time hunting, fishing, and flying small airplanes. He was a member of the New Milford Historical Society, the National Rifle Assoc., New Milford sportsmens Assoc., Housatonic Fish & Game Protective Assoc., Connecticut Sportsmen's Alliance, Antique Aircraft Assoc., and the Short Wing Piper Club. He also enjoyed vacationing with his family at their home in Misquamicut Beach, Rhode Island. Besides his wife, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Henry H. III and Mary Garvey of Plum Island, MA; a daughter and son-in-law, Kendra Garvey Owen and Richard Owen of Northborough, MA; a daughter, Colleen E. Garvey of New Milford, three grandchildren, Forrest Garvey Owen, Bridget Garvey Owen, Mitchell Garvey Owen and an expected fourth grandchild. He also leaves a sister, Elizabeth Garvey Stack of Monroe; four brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, 14 nieces and nephews, many relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Old Park Lane Road, New Milford on Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in the St. Francis Cemetery, Fort Hill Road, New Milford. Clyde D. Watson
Clyde Davis Watson, 98, formerly of Southbury and Brookfield Center, died June 3, at Stonehenge Nursing Home in Chittenango, N.Y. Mrs. Watson was born Dec. 27, 1899, in Pittsburg, Texas. She graduated in 1921 from the University of Texas at Austin, received a master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, and taught mathematics for many years. In 1931, she married Charles Nelles Watson of Guelph, Ontario. A Connecticut resident since 1978, she divided her time between Southbury and Brookfield Center. After her husband's death in 1993, she resided in and near Syracuse, N.Y. She is survived by her sons, Charles Nelles Watson, Jr., of Manlius, N.Y., and John Davis Watson of Iowa City, Iowa, 5 grandchildren; & 4 great-grandchildren. Eight sisters, 3 brothers, and a grandson predeceased her. A memorial service will take place at a later date at the Church of the Epiphany, Southbury. No calling hours. Louis J. Piskura
Louis Joseph Piskura, 81, of 14 Sherwood Drive, New Milford, husband of Veronica Tencza Piskura, died Tuesday at New Milford Nursing Home. Mr. Piskura was born in Brookfield, Oct. 25, 1916, a son of Paul and Anna Piskura. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the European Theater. He had been employed by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation in New Milford from 1958 until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the Andrew B. Mygatt Post 1672 V.F.W. of New Milford and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter of New Milford. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Louis J. Piskura of New Milford; & a sister, Margaret Feli of Newtown. Funeral services on Friday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment in St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford. There are no calling hours. Ethel O. Santore
Ethel (Olsen) Santore of Danbury, CT, formerly of Westport, CT, died June 8, 1998 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Earl "Coach" Santore. Mrs. Olsen was born in White Plains, NY, a daughter of the late Walfred Uno & Clara (Brittina) Olsen. She was a graduate of the New York School of Art for Interior Decorating. Besides her husband, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Walfred & Mary Scofield of Riverton, Long Island; her daughter and husband, Brittina & John Schwarz of Trumbull, CT; her stepson and his wife, Donald & Liz Santore of Danbury; her stepdaughter and husband, Donna & Donald Davie Lancaster, Calif.; numerous loving grandchildren & great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Loisclaire Otten. Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Priscilla White
Priscilla G. White, age 69, of Bethel, died at her home on Thursday morning. She was the wife of the late Richard A. White, Jr. Mrs. White was born in Manhattan, August 5, 1928, a daughter of the late George and Anna (Duffy) Goodman. She attended schools in New York state, and was a New York resident until moving to Bethel in 1977. Active in volunteer work, Mrs. White was actively involved with the Bethel Public Library, and Aunt Nellie's Attic, in conjunction with Family & Children's Aid in Danbury. Mrs. White was a parishioner of the Church of St. Mary, Bethel. She is survived by two sons: Paul A. White of Bethel, and Thomas E. White and his wife, Coleen, of Galvaston, Tx., a daughter, Anne W. Catalano, and her husband Benny, of West Islip, N.Y., three sisters: Patricia Davitt, of Palm Coast, Fla., Phyllis McCarthy, of Levittown, N.Y., and Phoebe Scanlon of Lincroft, N.J., her brother-in-law Edward White, of Hiltonhead, S.C., her grandson, Sean Thomas White, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. White is predeceased by three sons, Richard, James and Stephen White. Florence Watson
Florence L. Watson, age 90, died June 11, 1998, at her home, 179 Long Ridge Rd., Danbury. She was the wife of the late George E. Watson Sr. Mrs. Watson was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., March 2, 1908, a daughter of Joseph E. and Jane Hand Watson. She came to Bethel at age 11 and attended schools there. She also lived in Georgetown and Brookfield before making her home in Danbury. She was a retired seamstress for the Castro Convertible Co. for 20 years and was a member of St. Joseph Church in Danbury. She is survived by her three daughters: Jeanne Northrup of Darien, Elise C. Marciano of Danbury and Dianne License of Brookfield; and five grandchildren: John C. Kern III of Norwalk, Vici L. Anderson of Newportland, Me., Sue Arnold of Brookfield, Lisa Flavin and Davin License, both of New York. She was predeceased by her son George Edward Watson Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 13, 1998, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Danbury. Albert Petrucci
Albert V. Petrucci, age 71, of 42 Candlewood Park, Danbury, died on Thursday at Danbury Hospital. Mr. Petrucci was born in Danbury, Aug. 12, 1926, a son of the late Ercole and Josephine (Varsallo) Petrucci. He attended schools in Danbury and St. Lawrence School in Brewster, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Petrucci had worked as a floor sander for Kent Floors and Danbury Floors prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Danbury. He is survived by a son, Alan Petrucci of Danbury; a brother, Ercole "Babe" Petrucci of Danbury; and his long-time companion, Betty Byxbee of Danbury. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph and his sister Marie. Funeral services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery. Margaret Sullivan
Margaret M. "Madge" Sullivan, age 91, of 23 Oak Ridge Gate, Danbury, CT, wife of the late John R. Sullivan, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Danbury Hospital. Mrs. Sullivan was born in Clonmel, Ireland, March 11, 1907, a daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Whelan. She came to the U.S.A. in 1930 and had been a Danbury resident for approximately 50 years. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, John R. of Danbury; six daughters, Margaret Dyer, Elizabeth Crudington and Clarita Sullivan, all of Danbury, Helen Tracy and Kathleen Mandato, both of Redding, and Alice Cummings of Dracut, MA; 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, including John Cleary of Danbury. She was predeceased by an infant son, Michael, in 1946. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Church on Monday morning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bethel. Patrick J. Heron Sr.
Patrick J. Heron, Sr., Lieutenant, DFD, Retired, age 66, of 42 Triangle St., Danbury, husband of Donna M. (Dale) Heron, died at his home on Sunday. He was born in Danbury, Jan. 6, 1932, a son of the late Patrick and Catherine (Lagan) Heron. He was a graduate of St. Peter School and Danbury High School, Class of 1950. Mr. Heron served with the Danbury Fire Dept., for more than 33 years, retiring in 1992. He was a lifelong Danbury resident. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Danbury Firefighters Association Local 801, International Assoc. of Firefighters. Honorary member of Wooster Hose Company and member of Bethel Lions Club. Besides his wife, he is survived by son and daughter in law, Patrick K. II and Dorice Heron of Newtown, son and daughter in law, Timothy H. and Michelle Heron of Danbury, daughter and son in law, Patti Ann and Jose Vasquez of Danbury; a brother, Daniel Heron of Danbury; 3 sisters, Margaret Heron, Anne Casagrande of Danbury, Kathleen Januzzi of New Fairfield; 2 grandsons: Nicholas and Michael Heron; several nieces and nephews. Robert E. Lewis
Robert E. Lewis, 68, of 546 Jacob Road, Southbury, husband of Grace Waldeck Lewis, died Friday, June 12 at St. May's Hospital in Waterbury. Mr. Lewis was born May 4, 1930 in Southbury, son of the late Myron and Fannie Vogelbach Lewis. Mr. Lewis graduated from schools in Southbury and from the Abbott Technical School in Danbury. He was the owner of Bob E. Lewis, Inc. for over 40 years. He helped build several prominent public buildings in Southbury in the 1950's and 1960's, including the old town hall, which is now the police department. Mr. Lewis was a veteran of the Navy, serving in the Korean War. Besides his wife of Southbury, he is survived by three daughters, Linda Anderson of New Gloucester, Maine, Sandra Emmen of Spring Hill, Florida, and Susan Elworthy of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada; two brothers, Elmer Lewis of Danbury, Reginald Lewis of Ansonia; four sisters, Helen Jurgens of Oxford, Doris Lewis and Betty Jane Chapman, both of Southbury, Inez Ely, of South Carolina; 8 grandsons. He was pre-deceased by a son, Gregory Smith. Memorial service Saturday, June 20th at 11:00 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant Rd., Newtown. Dorothy Covell
Dorothy Covell, age 72, of Danbury, CT, wife of the late Stephen D. Covell, died at Danbury Hospital on June 14, 1998, after an extended illness. She was born in Perth Amboy, NJ, Dec. 4, 1925, a daughter of the late Albert & Helen (Kertes) Schuster. She was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School Class of 1943. At the time of her retirement, she was customer relations manager of Barnell Loft of Baldwin, NY. Her greatest legacy was love of family, who were all with her during her final hours. Mrs. Covell had been a Danbury resident for the past 3 years. She had summered at Candlewood for 30 years. She had been a resident of Springfield Gardens, Queens, Baldwin, Long Island from 1957 to 1995. She was active with League of Women Voters, active with the PTA of Schubert School and past president, volunteer with Adult Education in Baldwin, NY. Survived by her sons and daughters, Dorothy E. Rose Londa Heyman
Rose Londa Heyman died on Sunday, June 14th, after a brief illness. She was 88 years old. A lifelong resident of Danbury, she attended its public schools, and received her Masters from Western CT State University. For many years, Rose Londa Heyman taught English/language arts in Danbury's public school system. She is survived by her daughter, Adele Handlers, and her son, Joseph Heyman, both of Ridgefield, and her sister, Harriet Papish, of Danbury. Her daughter, Donna Wasloff, died several years ago. She is also survived by six grandchildren, and one great grand child. Her passion for life will be missed. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 16th, 3:00 PM, at the United Jewish Center Synagogue, 141 Deer Hill, Danbury, with interment services following at the United Jewish Center Cemetery, Miry Brook Road, Danbury. Contributions can be sent to a charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, New Haven.
Thomas E. Knight, Sr.
Thomas Edward Knight, Sr., 58, of 1 Terre Haute Rd., Danbury, died Saturday at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Marilyn A. Wilkins Knight. Mr. Knight was born in Sanford, FL, May 28, 1940, a son of the late Willie Lee and Maxine Herring Knight. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Danbury resident since 1956. He worked for 27 years at American National Can in Danbury until retiring and currently worked at Kanthal Corp. in Bethel. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church in Danbury, and a member of the Carter L. Marshall Elks Lodge. He had also served as Union Steward while at American National Can. Mr. Knight is also survived by 1 son Thomas E. Knight, Jr. of Danbury; 2 daughters Tishia Knight and Alethea Vines both of Danbury; 2 brothers Samuel L. Knight of Laurelton, MD, William J. Knight o Danbury; 1 sister Annie P. Knight of Waterbury, CT; and 2 grandsons, Omar and Damian; as well as several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc., CT Affiliate, PO Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492-7522. The funeral will be held at Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church, Thursday morning at 11:00, with Pastor Mark J. Roderick, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Bethel. The family will receive friends and the casket will be open at the church Thursday from 10 to 11 only.
Robin L. Morlock
Robin L. Morlock, 22, of 14 Overlook Dr., Brookfield, died at the Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday morning, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Saturday. She was born in Danbury, September 26, 1975, daughter of Frederick A. & Linda (Ferguson) Morlock. She had been a lifetime Brookfield resident and a graduate of Brookfield High School, Class of 1993. While at Brookfield High she played three sports, Basketball, Soccer & Softball and was selected to the All State Teams in Soccer & Softball. She received a soccer scholarship to North Carolina State University and was captain of that team in 1996. While at N.C. State she started in 83 consecutive soccer games as a marking back and was considered by many opposing coaches to be one of the premier defenders in the nation. Miss Morlock graduated from North Carolina State University this past May. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Thomas F. Morlock of Brookfield, her maternal grandmother, Madeline Ferguson of Sarasota, Florida and several aunts, uncles & cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, David A. Morlock in May of 1994. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield, on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Entombment will take place in the mausoleum at St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury. Louis Katz
Louis Katz, 84, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and formerly of Danbury. Mr. Katz was born in Danbury on March 2, 1914, son of the late Louis and Rose Katz. He was the youngest lawyer to pass the bar in the State of Connecticut and was a graduate of New York University and New York University Law School. Mr. Katz practiced law in Danbury for more than 50 years before his retirement and subsequent move to Arizona in 1978. He had previously been a lifelong Danbury resident. Mr. Katz was a former two-year president of the Connecticut Bar Association; a lifelong member of the United Jewish Center in Danbury and a former president of its Men's Club and Brotherhood; and former president of the Greater Danbury Community Chest. He was also a member of the Danbury Kiwanis Club. He was as an Army-Airforce Captain during World War II, serving a tour of duty in Japan. Mr. Katz is survived by his four children, Susan Katz Reynolds of NYC, David Katz of Scottsdale, AZ, Joan Katz of Ramona, CA, and Jonathan Katz of Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA; and four grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Diamond of NYC and Danielle and Michael Katz of Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 o'clock at the United Jewish Center, 141 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, with interment services to follow in the United Jewish Center Cemetery, Grays Bridge Road, Brookfield. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Louis Katz Memorial Fund in care of the United Jewish Center of Danbury.
