Carl A.W. Rogers Jr.
Carl A.W. Rogers, 84, a retired funeral director at The Tomlinson Homestead in Danbury, died Sunday at his home in Florida.

Mr. Rogers lived at 844 Bayport Circle, Venice, Fla. He was a former resident of Lake Shore Drive North, Candlewood Shores, Brookfield.

He was born in Danbury, Sept. 14, 1913, a son of Carl A.W. and Lillian E. Woodman Rogers Sr. He was educated in Danbury public schools and attended Columbia University.

A veteran of World War II, he served inn the U.S. Army.

Early in his career, Mr. Rogers traveled to 46 states and portions of Canada as a salesman for the former Bard-Parker Company in Danbury. He later was associated in business with his father, co-founder of the Hatch-Rogers Motor Company, a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership on West Street in Danbury. They closed their franchise in 1956, and Mr. Rogers became an insurance salesman for the Prudential Insurance Company until joining the staff of The Tomlinson Homestead in 1960.

Long active in the civic community, he was a member of Progressive Lodge #18, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Lions Club of Danbury. He had been a Corporator and member of the Board of Trustees of the Union Savings Bank of Danbury for more than 25 years. He was also a member of the Ridgewood Country Club.

Mr. Rogers was a member of the United Methodist Church of Danbury, and as a church trustee he was involved in the sale of the church property to the City of Danbury when the church moved from its downtown location to Clapboard Ridge Road.

Following his retirement, Mr. Rogers was a member of the board of directors of the Danbury Cemetery Association.

He was also a trustee of the former Methodist Home in Danbury and later at the Methodist Home in Shelton, Conn.

Mr. Rogers is survived by a son, Richard W. Rogers of Fenton, Mich.; a daughter, Elaine Tatko; a sister, Marion Pfender of Venice, Fla.; a grandson; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the United Methodist Church of Danbury, 5 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury.

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Danbury at a time to be announced.

Frederick Capell
Frederick E. Capell of Brewster, N.Y., died yesterday at his home four days shy of his 85th birthday.

Mr. Frederick was the husband of Geraldine Goettsche, whom he married July 13, 1941, in White Plains, N.Y.

Born and educated in Brooklyn, he was the son of Gustav and Josephine Moshinger Capell.

A retired insurance adjuster, he worked for Atlantic Companies on Wall Street for 20 years. A member of St. John's Episcopal Church, he lived in Brewster for 30 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived a son, Peter, of Minneapolis, Minn., and a sister, Helen Macdougall of Yorktown Heights, N.Y. He was predeceased by his son Robert in 1991.

Charles ``Todd'' Hull
Charles E. ``Todd'' Hull of Nunnawauk Road, Newtown, and formerly of Shady Rest in the Sandy Hook area, died yesterday at his home. He was 94.

Mr. Hull was born in Fairfield, March 31, 1904, a son of Charles and Willemina Hiller Hull. A resident of Newtown for 59 years, he was a security guard in Newtown for more than 20 years at the former Connecticut National Bank.

The widower of Fannie Lepista Hull, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Rahikka of Newtown; five brothers, Donald of Hillsboro, N.H., Warren of Southport, Clarence of Sandy Hook, Fred of Fairfield and Lester of Brooklyn, Conn.; two sisters, Martha Furlong of Fairfield and Elizabeth Bognar of Trumbull; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m., Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown.

SERVICES: Monday, noon, at the funeral home. The Rev. Steven Gordon will officiate. Burial in Newtown Village Cemetery.

William Byers
William E. Byers of Taunton Lane, Newtown, a retired project manager for Southern Connecticut Gas Co. in Bridgeport, died Wednesday at Danbury Hospital. He was 71.

Mr. Byers was born in Salem, Ohio, Jan. 11, 1927, a son of Dr. Guy and Lillian Bass Byers. He served the Army during World War II in the European Theater of War and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1951. A resident of Newtown for the past 29 years, he was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the local Friends In Service Here and a former driver for Meals on Wheels in the area.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Danbury Hospital Development Fund, Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Ave., Danbury 06810.

SERVICES: Saturday, 4 p.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, Newtown. The Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd will officiate. No calling hours. Burial in Grandview Cemetery, Salem. Arrangements by Honan Funeral Home of Newtown.'

Arthur Heckman
Arthur John Heckman of Florida Road, Ridgefield, died Sunday at Filosa Convalescent Home in Danbury. He was 86.

Mr. Heckman was the husband of Thelma Fuller Heckman of Ridgefield.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 2, 1911, a son of the late John G. and Bertha Cyriacks Heckman. He attended Brooklyn schools.

A retired lithographer and printer, he worked for many years at the P.F. Mallon Co. in New York City. He was an avid horseman and sailor, and he raised purebred sheep for many years at his small farm on Florida Road. He was a charter member and Commodore of the Brooklyn Corinthian Yacht Club and a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

The World War II Army veteran served two years in the Philippines.

Besides his wife of 61 years, he is survived by a son, John, of Weare, N.H., and two grandchildren.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Danbury Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 971, Danbury 06813, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

There are no calling hours and graveside services will be at the convenience of the family in Maplewood Cemetery, Antrim, N.H. Arrangements by Holt Funeral Home, Henniker, N.H.

Teresa M. Novaco
Teresa M. Novaco, 92, of 19 Cozy Hollow, Danbury, died Thursday at the Danbury Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Nicholas A. Novaco.

Born in Danbury, December 7, 1905, she was a daughter of Joseph and Marie Gabriele. She graduated from Danbury High School.

A lifelong Danbury resident, she worked as an inspector for the Barden Corporation for 25 years retiring in 1970. She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Church.

Surviving are two sons, S. Nicholas of Albuquerque, N.M., and Paul J. of Danbury; three daughters, Louise P. Novaco of Livermore, Calif., Marianne F. Hayes of Las Cruces, N.M., and Kathie L. Trocolla of Newtown; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-children; a great great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Gregory the Great Church Development Fund, 85 Great Plain Rd., Danbury, CT 06810.

CALLING HOURS: Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury.

SERVICES: Monday at 11 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Church, with Deacon Joseph Gabriele, her nephew, as Homilist. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Audrey Novotny
Audrey MacDevitt Novotny, 74, a counselor for Jenny Craig, died Friday at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Novotny, of 7 Abbott Ave., Danbury, was the wife of the late Donald Novotny.

She was born in Flushing, N.Y., July 12, 1923, a daughter of Raymond and Mabel Giebler MacDevitt. She graduated from New York schools.

Before working for Jenny Craig, she had been employed at the Windmill Diner in Danbury.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Ryan-MacKinnon of Danbury and Linda Frey of Patchogue, N.Y.; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

SERVICES: Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Danbury. Burial will follow in Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, N.Y.'

Philip Keller
Philip Keller, 76, father of Ken Keller of Danbury, died Wednesday at his home in Boca Rotan, Fla.

He was the husband of Roslyn Arcell Keller.

Born in Czechoslovakia, June 1, 1921, he was a son of William and Anna Keller.

Keller, who came to the United States as an infant and graduated from Yonkers High School in 1939, worked in the food service industry.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant.

Besides his wife of 55 years and his son Ken, he is survived by two daughters, Denise Berniker of Montrose, N.Y., and Cheryl Swanko of Carmel, N.Y.; a sister, Olga Shindlman of New York State; a step-brother, Bernie Weiss of California; and four grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

SERVICES: Sunday at 10 a.m. at Weinstein Memorial Chapel, Central Avenue, Yonkers, N Y.

Jo Ann Studdard
Jo Ann Barresi Studdard, 48, assistant financial director for Waterview Nursing Home in Purdys, N.Y., died Thursday at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Studdard, of Woodside Avenue, Danbury, was the wife of the late J.W. Studdard.

She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Nov. 25, 1949, a daughter of Mary Barresi of the Bronx and the late Carmelo Barresi.

Besides her mother, she is survived by a son, Salvatore Diaz of Danbury; four sisters, Camille Marinaccio, Catherine Henry, Antoinette Evola and Gina Kappes; three brothers, Salvatore, Anthony and Joseph Barresi, and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

SERVICES: Monday at 9 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church in Danbury. Burial will follow in Milltown Rural Cemetery, Southeast, N.Y.

Helen E. Nearing
A graveside service for Helen Evans Nearing will be conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. at New Milford Center Cemetery.

Mrs. Nearing, formerly of New Milford, died May 8 in Southbury. She was the wife of the late Andrew J. ``Bruce'' Nearing.'

Marjorie S. Williams
Marjorie Stuart Williams, 83, formerly of Sarah Sanford Road, Bridgewater, died Friday at New Milford Nursing Home.

She was the wife of the late James E. Williams Sr.

Born in Sherman, March 16, 1915, she was a daughter of C. Henry and Lucy Woodin Stuart.

Mrs. Williams had lived in Bridgewater since 1953 and was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Bridgewater and the Women's Auxiliary of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include her step-mother, Olive Stuart of Bridgewater; three sons, Ronald Williams and James E. Williams Jr., both of New Milford, and Gary Williams of Ocean Isle, N.C.; three brothers, Donald Stuart and William T. Stuart, both of Bridgewater, and Richard Stuart of North Carolina; six sisters, Dorothy Barrett and Lucy Ferriss, both of New Milford, Loretta Larson of Vermont, Olive Williams and Priscilla Orvis, both of Bridgewater, and Nancy Stuart of Naugatuck; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the New Milford Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice Home Care, 68 Park Lane Road, New Milford, CT 06776.

Gail R. Gradowski
Gail Ramstein Gradowski, a member of the faculty at Hill and Plain Elementary School in New Milford from 1980 until this year, died Thursday at New Milford Hospital. She was 56.

Mrs. Gradowski, of 29 Curtis Road, Washington, was the wife of Richard C. Gradowski.

She was born on April 30, 1942, in Torrington, where she spent the early part of her life.

A daughter of Wesley Ramstein of New Hartford and the late Lucy Marciano Ramstein, Mrs. Gradowski graduated from Central Connecticut State University and later earned a master's degree from Western Connecticut State University.

She was a member of the Connecticut Teachers Association and St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington.

Besides her husband and father, Mrs. Gradowski is survived two daughters, Beth A. Gradowski and Allison Gradowski, both of Washington; three sisters, Barbara Horn of New York, Donna Wechsler of Virginia and Glenna Ramstein of New Hartford; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in her memory may be made to The Book of Remembrance at St. John's Episcopal Church, Washington, CT 06793.

Leon H. Reynolds
Leon Hoyt Reynolds, father of Wayne Reynolds of Ridgefield, died Friday at Laurelwood Nursing Home in Ridgefield. He was 83.

He was the husband of the late Beatrice Barnes Reynolds.

Born in New Canaan, March 2, 1915, he was a son of Arthur and Josie Hoffman Harris Reynolds.

Mr. Reynolds was a descendant of John and Sarah Reynolds, first of Watertown, Mass., in 1628, then of Greenwich, and a direct descendant of many of the original settlers of Fairfield County. Both of his grandfathers, George E. Reynolds and John M. Hoyt, fought for the Union in the Civil War. His great-grandfather, Leander Hoyt, fought in the War of 1812.

He graduated from Stamford High School in 1933 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

After the war, Mr. Reynolds formed The Leon Reynolds Society Orchestra, which became a popular band throughout the Fairfield/Westchester County areas. He was a member of the Danbury and Stamford Musicians Unions for 50 years. Mr. Reynolds played drums in a quartet with his close friend Vincent Rowan, formerly of Danbury, and two other friends at the former Lamplighter in Danbury.

A 33-year resident of Wilton, Mr. Reynolds had been employed for 35 years as a senior design draftsman by Machlett Laboratories, a division of Raytheon Corporation, in Springdale, Conn., retiring in 1982.

Besides his son Wayne, he is survived by another son, Richard Reynolds of Stamford; and five grandchildren.

A private funeral will be conducted in Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan. The F. Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan, is in charge of arrangements.
