SOUTHBURY - Robert Lewis Taylor, a popular writer in the 1950s who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, died yesterday at his home in Southbury after a brief illness. Mr. Taylor was 88.
A best-selling novelist and biographer, his long career also included many years writing for the New Yorker magazine. He was best known for his prize-winning book, "The Travels of Jamie McPeeters," a humorous satire of the Gold Rush. The book was based on diaries Mr. Taylor got from Yale University library.
Mr. Taylor was born in Carbondale, Ill., Sept. 24, 1910, a son of Roscoe A. and Mabel Bowyer Taylor. After a year on the newspaper, Mr. Taylor took another sabbatical, this time sailing to Tahiti aboard a tramp steamer.
Unbeknownst to him, his mother submitted his letters about his travels to the American Boy magazine, which published them. That launched him on a career of writing essays and magazine stories in Esquire, Saturday Evening Post and Life.
After returning to the United States, Mr. Taylor went to work for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
He joined the New Yorker staff in 1939. There he developed, along with writer Alva Johnson, the style for the magazine's profiles. From 1939 to 1961 he wrote more than 100 profiles, many of which were later reprinted in "Doctor, Lawyer, Merchant, Chief" (1948), "The Running Pianist" (1950), and "Center Ring" (1956).
His New Yorker career was interrupted when he joined the Navy during World War II. He served as a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve, where he published training manuals.
After returning to civilian life, Mr. Taylor started writing books. His first was in 1947, "Adrift in a Boneyard." His second book, written in 1949, was a biography of W.C. Fields, "His Follies and Fortunes."
