Services for Irene Saxton Smith will be April 13 at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in New Milford. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, New Milford.

Mrs. Smith, 90, a retired home economics teacher for the John Pettibone School in New Milford, died Tuesday at the New Milford Nursing Home.

She was the wife of the late Charles C. Smith and had lived at 2 Taylor St., New Milford.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Kenneth G. Smith of Southbury; a daughter, Carolyn Lois Watkins of Sandy Hook; a brother, Randall P. Saxton of Arizona; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Book of Remembrance at the First Congregational Church, Main Street, New Milford 06776; or the Hospice Homecare Program, New Milford VNA, 68 Park Lane Road, New Milford 06776.

Rita P. Hatcher
Rita P. Hatcher, 53, of Southbury, died Wednesday at Danbury Hospital.

She was the wife of Walter Hatcher.

Mrs. Hatcher was born in New York, N.Y., on July 30, 1943, a daughter of Nellie Marmaras Pardalis of Danbury and the late Peter Pardalis. She graduated from Danbury High School in 1961 and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Western Connecticut State University in 1965. She went on to earn a master's degree from Central Connecticut State University.

She taught school in Ridgefield and New Jersey, and had taught biology at Bethel High School for the past 14 years. She was a member of the Bethel Education Association and was active in Science Horizons. She was an avid tennis player and bridge player.

Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Hatcher is survived by a son, Peter W. Hatcher of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two daughters, Kristen Fowler of Southbury and Jennifer L. Hatcher of Brookline, Mass.; a sister, Elizabeth Cioppa of Bridgewater; a brother, Thomas Pardalis of New Fairfield; a niece and three nephews.

Allen K. Hanakahi
Allen K. ``Pineapple'' Hanakahi, 53, a longtime New Milford resident, died Tuesday at New Milford Hospital.

He was the husband of Karen Hanakahi.

Mr. Hanakahi was born in Molokai, Hawaii, March 6, 1944, a son of Albert and Grace Goo Leong of Maui, Hawaii.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was employed as a truck driver and operations manager by Connecticut Specialty Gas of Danbury. He was a member of the Connecticut Cycle Riders and traveled extensively on his motorcycle. He was also an avid woodworker.

Besides his wife and parents, Mr. Hanakahi is survived by two sons, Allen Hanakahi II and Jason Hanakahi of New Milford; a daughter, Maile Hanakahi of New Milford; a brother, Desmond Hanakahi of Marina, Calif.; two stepbrothers, Albert Leong of Kauai, Hawaii, and Theodore Leong of Maui, Hawaii; a sister, Ida Grand of Lynwood, Wash.; and a stepsister, Elizabeth Wallace of La Mirada, Calif.

SERVICES: A memorial service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the New Milford United Methodist Church, 68 Danbury Rd., New Milford. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The Colonial Funeral Home, Hull Funeral Service, 87 Park Lane Rd., New Milford, is in charge of arrangements.

Patrick L. Flanagan
Patrick L. Flanagan, 70, of Ridgefield, died Thursday at Yale New Haven Hospital.

He was the husband of Mary E. McCauley Flanagan.

Mr. Flanagan was born in Moate, County West Meath, Ireland, on Aug. 4, 1926, a son of Joseph and Anne Flanagan Flanagan.

He came to the United States in 1949 and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean war. He graduated from St. John's University in 1959 and performed graduate work at Western Connecticut State University and Sacred Heart University.

He worked as a financial analyst with GTE in Stamford for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1991.

Before moving to Ridgefield more than 25 years ago, he lived in Bloomfield, N.J. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the A.A.R.P. and the Marquette Council Knights of Columbus.

Besides his wife, Mr. Flanagan is survived by three sons, Kevin L. Flanagan of Boxborough, Mass., Neil W. Flanagan of Ridgefield and Robert J. Flanagan of Dunstable, Mass.; a daughter, M. Patricia Flanagan of Ridgefield; and seven grandchildren.

Mary B. Fetherston
Mary Baldwin Fetherston, 93, of Brookfield, died Wednesday at Mediplex of Danbury.

She was the wife of the late Edward A. Fetherston Sr.

Mrs. Fetherston was born in Yonkers, N.Y., April 1, 1904, a daughter of Thomas and Briged Galvin Baldwin. She was employed by Union Carbide Corp. as an executive secretary until her retirement in 1967.

She had been a Brookfield resident since 1982.

Mrs. Fetherston is survived by a daughter, Jean Lathrop of Wells, Maine; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Carolan, and a son, Edward Fetherston Jr.

Helen K. Sands

Helen K. Kelly Sands, 96, of Danbury, a former office manager for The News-Times, died Friday at Glen Hill Convalescent Home.

She was the wife of the late George Donald Sands.

Mrs. Sands was born in New Milford on Feb. 12, 1901, a daughter of Michael and Katherine Hutchinson Kelly. She attended local schools and Pritchard Business School.

She worked as the office manager of the The News-Times for 33 years until her retirement in 1962. She also volunteered for Danbury Hospital and the American Red Cross. She was a lifetime resident of the Danbury area.

Mrs. Sands is survived by five great-nieces, a great-great-niece and several great-great-nephews.

John D. Middleton
John ``Worth'' D. Middleton, 86, an active member of the New Fairfield community for more than 50 years, died Saturday at Glen Hill Convalescent Center, Danbury.

Mr. Middleton, of 31 Middleton Drive, New Fairfield, was the husband of Helen Horton Middleton.

He was born in Hortense, Ga., on Jan. 25, 1911, a son of George Haines and Avie Bagley Middleton.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Before his retirement, Mr. Middleton was co-owner for more than 20 years of the former Bethel Garage in Bethel.

He was an active member of the New Fairfield Congregational Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Middleton is survived by two sons, John ``Jay'' D. Middleton Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Lee Charles Middleton of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Wade Downing Middleton of New Fairfield and Robert Chester Middleton of Pomona Park, Fla.; five half-brothers and a half-sister, all of Florida; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren, all of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division St., Danbury.

Philip I. Hjelte
Philip I. Hjelte, 51, an executive with the Olin Corp. of Norwalk, died Saturday at his home in Ridgefield.

A resident of Ridgefield for the past 20 years, Mr. Hjelte was the husband of Elaine Tate Hjelte.

He was born in New York City on July 16, 1945, a son of Mary Dibase Hjelte of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and the late Ingvar Hjelte.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

He had been employed by the Olin Corp. for 20 years.

A naturalist, Mr. Hjelte participated in owl-prowls for the Discovery Center in Ridgefield.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield.

Besides his wife and mother, his survivors include two sons, Johnathan and Gregory Hjelte, both of Ridgefield; a daughter, Mindy Hjelte, also of Ridgefield; and two brothers, Richard Hjelte of Seattle, Wash., and Russell Hjelte of Fort Lauderdale.

Contributions in Mr. Hjelte's memory may be made to a favorite charity.

CALLING HOURS: Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Boton Funeral Home, West Church Street, Georgetown.

Roberta A. Murray
Roberta A. Murray, 65, a former resident of the area, died Sunday at the Abbott Terrace Nursing Home in Waterbury.

Mrs. Murray, of Naugatuck, was the wife of the late James C. Murray.

She was born in Danbury, June 7, 1931, a daughter of Helen M. Kozinski Polubinski of Danbury and the late Joseph Polubinski.

A 1949 graduate of Danbury High School, she later moved to Bethel where she lived, until moving to Naugatuck in 1977.

Mrs. Murray was a former employee of the Homer Bronson Co. in Beacon Falls.

Besides her mother, Mrs. Murray is survived by a daughter, Susan Murray of Naugatuck; a son, James Murray of Stratford; a brother, Joseph J. Polubinski of Danbury; and several nieces and nephews.

Kathleen T. Ward
Kathleen T. Ward, 70, a retired tax administrator, died Sunday at Danbury Hospital.

A resident of Brookfield for the past 40 years, Mrs. Ward lived at 1 Hawthorne Cove. She was the wife of Charles F. Ward.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 18, 1926, a daughter of James and Margaret Naulty Hasson. She was educated in Pennsylvania.

Before her retirement five years ago, Mrs. Ward was employed by the Berol Corp.

She was a member of St. Marguerite Church in Brookfield.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ward is survived by two sisters, Mary T. Kelly of Aldan, Pa., and Sr. Joan Hasson RSM of Merion, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Rose C. Anzalone
Rose C. Anzalone, 82, a retired seamstress and dressmaker, died Monday in Kent, Conn.

Mrs. Anzalone was the wife of the late Louis Anzalone. She had lived at 26 Mist Hill Drive, Brookfield before entering the Kent Convalescent Center.

She was born in Messina, Sicily, Italy, on June 23, 1914, a daughter of Antonio and Sabastian Chillemi Chillemi. She was educated in Italy and came to the United States as a young woman.

She was a seamstress in the New York garment district.

A resident of Brookfield for the past 17 years, Mrs. Anzalone was a member of St. Marguerite Church.

She is survived by two sons, Anthony and Philip Anzalone, both of Brookfield; two sisters, Connie Cerlini of Plainview, L.I., N.Y., and Alda DeSio of Flushing, N.Y.; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield.

SERVICES: Thursday at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Marguerite Church, Brookfield. Entombment will be in Ferncliff Mausoleum, Hartsdale, N.Y.

Georgie Lewis
Georgie Lewis, 84, a resident of Brewster for 60 years, died Monday at her home at Brewster Hill Road.

Mrs. Lewis was married to George H. Lewis on April 21, 1937.

She was born in Glace Bay, Cape Britton Island, Canada, Feb. 3, 1913, a daughter of John and Mary Ann Jobb Wilton. She was educated in Glace Bay.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker.

Besides her husband of almost 60 years, Mrs. Lewis is survived by a son, John G. Lewis of Brewster; and four grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of Northern Westchester and Putnam, 43 Kensico Ave., Mount Kisco, NY 10549.

Vincent J. DiGrazia
Vincent J. DiGrazia, 84, a resident of Brookfield for the past 25 years, died Monday at the Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care in Danbury.

Mr. DiGrazia formerly lived at Hickory Hill Road in Brookfield. He was the husband of Sophie DeCondo DiGrazia of Danbury.

He was born in New York, N.Y., on May 15, 1912, a son of Paul and Catherine Cuce DiGrazia. He lived in Paterson, N.J., before moving to Brookfield.

Prior to his retirement several years ago, Mr DiGrazia had been a foreman for a textile manufacturing company in New Jersey. After moving to Brookfield, he worked part time for Candlewood OB/GYN where his son, Dr. Paul DiGrazia of Brookfield, practices medicine.

Besides his wife and son, Mr. DiGrazia is survived by another son, Anthony DiGrazia of Simsbury, Conn.; two sisters, Ann DeCondo and Bobbie Peterno, both of New Jersey; two brothers, Joseph DiGrazia and Frederick DiGrazia, also of New Jersey; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

CALLING HOURS: Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.

SERVICES: Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield. Entombment will take place in the Mausoleum at St. Peter's Cemetery, Danbury.
