Maria Blakeman
Maria Louise Ferris Blakeman, 89, a lifelong Newtown resident, died Saturday at the Glen Hill Convalescent Center in Danbury.
Mrs. Blakeman lived at Boggs Hill Road. She was the wife of the late Charles Courtland Blakeman who died in 1979.
She was born in Newtown, June 23, 1908, a daughter of Charles David and Fannie Ophelia Thornhill Ferris. She was a graduate of Newtown High School.
Mrs. Blakeman was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown and the Pohtatuck Grange #129 of Newtown.
She was known for exhibiting her apples at local fairs including the former Danbury State Fair.
Her survivors include a brother, George D.W. Ferris of Danbury; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Private services will be conducted on Tuesday at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division St., Danbury with the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in Newtown Village Cemetery.
Julie Depowski
Julie Depowski, 73, a retired secretary, died Sunday at Mediplex of Danbury.
A resident of Brookfield for the past 19 years, Mrs. Depowski was the wife of Chester T. Depowski.
She was born in New York, N.Y., on April 26, 1924, a daughter of Konstantin and Anna Berlinski Mizeria. She was educated in New York schools.
Before her retirement, Mrs. Depowski was a secretary for Union Carbide and First Brands.
She attended St. Marguerite Church in Brookfield.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Depowski is survived by a son, Robert A. Depowski of Manhasset, L.I., N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Kathleen G. Elliott
Kathleen Green Elliott, 52, formerly of Danbury and a teacher in the New Britain schools, died Thursday at Hartford Hospital.
Mrs. Elliott, of Country Lane, Collinsville, Conn., was the wife of David Osgood Elliott.
She was born in Willimantic, April 17, 1945, a daughter of the late Vincent and Agnes Heirendt Green, and grew up in Middlebury.
Mrs. Elliott received a bachelor of science degree from Danbury State College and a master of elementary education from Central Connecticut State University.
For many years Mrs. Elliott taught at Old Roosevelt School and most recently at Lincoln School on Steele Street in New Britain as a reading and elementary classroom teacher for preschool through eighth grade.
She was a member of the Friends of Canton Library, the Canton Book Club and St. Patrick's Church in Collinsville.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Thomas O. Elliott of Collinsville, Conn.; two daughters, Christine Ormond of Newton, Mass., and Lisa Elliott of Charlestown, Mass.; two brothers, David Green of Madison, N.Y., and William Green of Guilford; a sister, Mary Cuthberson of Norwalk; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald L. Frischkorn
Ronald L. Frischkorn, 62, father of Timothy Frischkorn of Danbury, died Thursday at Bridgeport Hospital.
Mr. Frischkorn, of Stamford, was the husband of Mary Margaret Dee Frischkorn.
Born in New Cumberland, Pa., March 23, 1935, he was a son of Clarence and May Stetler Frischkorn.
Mr. Frischkorn was a self-employed carpenter. He also was a past Cub Scout pack master, a past Boy Scout assistant troop master and a volunteer adviser to the West Hill High School band parent association.
Besides his wife and son Timothy, he is survived by two other sons, Michael Frischkorn of Stamford and Terry Frischkorn of Darien; a daughter, Catherine Guyette of West Swanzey, N.H.; two sisters, Nancy Peak and Ester Williams, both of New Cumberland, Pa.; a brother, Clarence Frischkorn Jr. of New Cumberland, Pa.; six grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Catherine Crea
Catherine Crea, 63, of Brewster, N.Y., died Friday in Carmel, N.Y.
She was the wife of the late John Crea, who died in 1986.
Born in Yonkers, N.Y., Jan. 21, 1934, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary Kinahan Conway.
Mrs. Crea had lived in Patterson, N.Y., for six years before moving to Brewster two months ago.
Her survivors include a sister, Mary Deguisto of Brewster, N.Y.; and three nephews.

Francis J. Durkin
Francis J. Durkin, 75, retired co-owner of the Village Coffee Shop in Newtown, died Wednesday in Naples, Fla.
Mr. Durkin, formerly of 35 Valley Stream Drive in Danbury, was the husband of the late Helen F. Bachyrycz Durkin.
He was born in Danbury, April 26, 1922, a son of John and Elizabeth Dunn Durkin, and was educated in Danbury.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Before he and his wife owned and operated the Village Coffee Shop, he had been employed at Durkin's Diner for many years before it closed. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Church of Danbury.
Surviving are a son, Kevin M. Durkin of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia A. Norton of New Fairfield; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

William A. Anderson
William A. Anderson, 55, formerly of Danbury, died Wednesday.
A resident of Norwalk for the past 10 years, he previously had lived in Danbury for many years.
He was born in Norwalk, May 10, 1942, a son of the late Arne and Hulda Feiner Anderson.
Mr. Anderson had been employed at the Gilbert and Bennett Manufacturing Co., formerly in Georgetown. He was a former member of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Company.
Surviving is a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson of Beacon, N.Y.; a sister, Eda Webb of Weston; six grandchildren; and two nieces. He was predeceased by a daughter, Billie Kirwan.
Contributions in his memory may be to a charity of one's choice.

Isabell Coles Crews
Isabell Victoria Coles Crews, 66, a former Danbury resident, died Oct. 22 at her home in Washington, D.C.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., Dec. 30, 1930, she was a daughter of Rev. Martin and Elizabeth Layne Coles. She was educated in the Pittsylvania County schools.
At an early age she became a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Hurt, Va.
Ms. Crews had been employed by Davis & Geck of Danbury before moving to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Her survivors include three brothers, Walker Coles of Bridgeport, Eugene Coles of Danbury and Wallace Coles of Waterbury; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives in the area.
Services for Ms. Crews were conducted Nov. 15 in Hurt, Va., where burial took place.
Robert W. Wilvers
Robert Warren Wilvers, 65, a creative director in advertising, died Wednesday at home.
Mr. Wilvers, of New Milford, was born in Milwaukee, Wis., April 2, 1932, a son of Floyd and Norma Wilvers.
For more than 20 years he had been employed by Wells, Rich and Greene advertising agency in New York City.
He had maintained a weekend house in Connecticut since the 1970s, moving permanently to Bridgewater in 1991 and to New Milford in 1995.
His survivors include two daughters, Roberta Wilvers of New York City, and Tracy Cassidy of Framingham, Mass.; and a grandson.
A memorial service will be conducted Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Northern Fairfield County, 9 Picketts Ridge Road, West Redding.
Una Deming Gammell
Una Deming Gammell, 90, formerly of Redding and a pioneer in women's radio in the 1940s and 1950s, died Dec. 4 at a hospice in Simsbury.
Mrs. Gammell, of West Hartford, was the wife of the late Olcott F. King Jr. and the late Sereno B. Gammell.
She was born in Westchester County, N.Y., May 14, 1907, a daughter of Dr. William C. and Imogen Hawthorne Deming. She was a great-granddaughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The family moved to Redding in 1910, and Mrs. Gammell spent most of her childhood and youth there.
She was known professionally as Una King on radio station WTHT in Hartford. One of her programs, ``Hartford Speaks,'' was comprised of street interviews and discussions of world events. Her other radio programs included a classical music hour. In 1955, Mrs. Gammell became the director of radio and television for the State Civil Defense Department.
She was active on the boards of the Hartford Symphony Auxiliary and the Mark Twain House and was a volunteer with the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary.
Her survivors include two daughters, Joan King Cowie and Gail King Gardner, both of West Hartford; a brother, Olcott H. Deming of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Joan Ensor of Redding; a step-daughter, Marna G. Simons of Orange, Calif.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernard Herbek
Bernard ``Barney'' J. Herbek of 12 Cherokee Drive, Danbury, died Thursday at the Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care in Danbury. He was 87.
Mr. Herbek was the widower of Virginia M. Waibel Herbek.
He was born in New York City, Sept. 5, 1910, a son of Karel and Marie Marek Herbek. He was educated in New York City schools and he lived on Long Island before moving to New Fairfield in 1972. In 1979 he moved to Danbury to make a home with his son, David C. Herbek.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a radio operator.
He was a self-employed jeweler and silversmith who worked with the Frank J. McCormack Co. of New York City for more than 35 years. Later, he worked at the Berol Corp. in Danbury and in the maintenance division of the New Fairfield Public School System. For a short time, he drove school buses in New Fairfield.
He was a member, eucharistic minister and lector at St. Edward the Confessor Church in New Fairfield, as well as a member of its Rosary Society. While in New York, he was a member of Sacred Heart Church, which he helped establish, as well as a member and president of its Holy Name Society and a president of its Nocturnal Adoration Society.
He volunteered at the Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care, which awarded him with a badge for 6,000 hours of service.
Besides his son David with whom he made his home, he is survived by his son Richard J. Herbek of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Florence Calhoun
Florence J. Calhoun of Washington, Conn., died Wednesday at The Kent. She was 91.
Mrs. Calhoun was the widow of Elmer C. Calhoun Sr.
She was born in New Milford, Feb. 19, 1906, a daughter of the late Frederick and Jennie Gloyd Bennett, and she attended local schools. She was a resident of the New Preston area of Washington and a member of the New Preston Congregational Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter, Elmer C. Calhoun Jr. and Janice Carlson, both of New Preston; two brothers, Robert of Bantam and Walter of Morris; a sister, Hazel Box of Litchfield; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
