Arthur W. Vining Jr.
Arthur W. Vining Jr., 80, a retired salesman for the Curtis Packaging Company in Sandy Hook, died Saturday at New Milford Hospital.
Mr. Vining, of 7 Hanover Road, Newtown, was the husband of the late Ruth Peale Vining.
He was born in Newtown, Oct. 27, 1916, a son of Arthur and Annie Benoit Vining. He attended Newtown schools and graduated from Newtown High School.
A college graduate, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, rising to the rank of major.
After the war, he returned to Newtown and worked at Curtis Packaging for more than 30 years.
He was a long-standing member of Hiram Lodge #18 AF & AM Lodge in Sandy Hook.
Surviving are a nephew and a niece.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Newtown Village Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown.
Maurice J. LeVaillant
Maurice J. LeVaillant, 93, a retired engineer and farmer who donated a large parcel of his land to the town of Bridgewater for a nature preserve, died May 27 at Mediplex of Danbury.
Mr. LeVaillant, of 7 Park Ave., Danbury, had lived for many years in Bridgewater.
Born in Normandy, France, May 5, 1904, he was a son of Rene and Mary LeVaillant.
During World War II he served with the British Navy, and, after his ship was torpedoed, he was taken as a prisoner of war and held for four years by the Japanese. He was freed by the Allies in 1945 after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan.
Mr. LeVaillant was an engineer who repaired amusement park rides, and he also operated a small farm in Bridgewater with his late brother, Rene LeVaillant.
Surviving is a nephew, Bernard LeVaillant of Marseilles, France.
Cremation took place at Pine Grove Crematory in Waterbury. Cremation Services of Western Connecticut, 55 Main St., Danbury, was in charge of arrangements.
Paul P. Brutz
A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul P. Brutz will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford. Burial will take place in St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.
Mr. Brutz, 80, a retired employee of the former Robertson Bleachery & Dye Works of New Milford, died Tuesday at Candlewood Valley Care Center in New Milford.
He was a resident of 2 Old Grove St., New Milford.
Born in New Milford, June 4, 1917, he was a son of Paul and Jadwiga Orzech Brutz.
Mr. Brutz graduated from New Milford High School in 1936 and was manager of the 1936 champion basketball team at the school.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European theater.
Besides working at Robertson Bleachery & Dye Works, Mr. Brutz also had been employed at the New Milford Foundry and Machine Works and at the former Scovill Manufacturing Company in New Milford.
Surviving is a nephew, Jay Brutz of New Milford.

Dorothy Azzarito
Dorothy Azzarito, 76, a lifetime Danbury resident, died Wednesday at Danbury Hospital.
Mrs. Azzarito, of 54 Town Hill Ave., Danbury, was born in Danbury, Feb. 7, 1921, a daughter of Anthony and Angeline Gallo Tomanio.
She had attended Danbury schools.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Rivera of Danbury; a brother, John Tomanio of Brookfield; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Timar Anderson
Funeral services for Timar Anderson will be conducted Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Laporta Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington.
Mr. Anderson, of Miami, Fla., and formerly of Danbury, died May 3.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lovallo Anderson; a brother, Evar Anderson; two sisters, Gunhild Timms and Evelyn Haas; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.

Vincent R. Scozzafava
Vincent R. Scozzafava, 77, proprietor of the former Westchester Refrigeration Company of Danbury, died Tuesday at his home, 3-A Haddad Drive, Danbury.
Mr. Scozzafava was born in Gimigliano, Italy, Feb. 22, 1920.
A resident of Danbury for 60 years, he was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater of War.
Mr. Scozzafava was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose Lodge, all of Danbury. He attended St. Joseph Church of Danbury.
Surviving is a son, Ralph P. Scozzafava of Media, Pa., and three grandchildren.

Private funeral services will take place in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home at the convenience of the family. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury, with full military honors.
Robert Roman
Robert Roman, 62, a retired self-employed roofer, died Tuesday at Danbury Hospital.
Mr. Roman, of 12 Pastor's Walk, Newtown, was the husband of Shirley Peck Roman.
Born in Bridgeport, Nov. 16, 1934, he was a son of Lucy Babich Roman of North Haven, Conn., and the late George Roman.
Mr. Roman served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War in the 2nd Amphibian Truck Company.
He had lived in Newtown for 33 years.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Dawn L. Hendrickson of Newtown; three brothers, George Roman of Bridgeport, Edward Roman of Nevada, and James Roman of Bethany, Conn.; and two sisters, Barbara Williams of Derby, Conn., and Judith Giannettino of North Haven.

Maria A. Scozzafava
Maria ``Mary'' A. Scozzafava, 85, a retired bookkeeper for the A & P Store in Danbury, died Wednesday at Laurel Wood in Ridgefield.
Miss Scozzafava was a resident of 35 Hillside Ave., Danbury.
Born in Danbury, Oct. 20, 1911, she was a daughter of Saverio and Lucia M. DiNapoli Scozzafava. She attended Danbury schools.
Besides the A & P Store, she also had worked in the W.T. Grant Store and the family store, Scozzafava Market, in Danbury.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Danbury, the American Association of Retired Persons, Chapter 1067, and the Daughters of Isabella.
Surviving are a brother, Joseph Scozzafava, and a sister, Theresa Bruno, both of Danbury, and five nephews as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Rita K. Fogarty
Rita K. Fogarty, 82, co-owner of Fogarty's Restaurant in Georgetown for 26 years, died Sunday at the Center of Optimum Care in Danielson, Conn.
Mrs. Fogarty, of Sunny Acres, Bethel, was the wife of the late John F. Fogarty, who died in 1979.
Born in Keensburg, N.J., April 15, 1915, she was a daughter of Mervin and Mary Lynch Keeney.
Mrs. Fogarty grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., attended local schools and graduated from St. Joseph Commercial School where she received an associate's degree in business.
She had been employed by Majestic Furniture Company in Bridgeport until her marriage in 1938.
Mrs. Fogarty and her husband moved to Georgetown in 1946 and together they started Fogarty's Restaurant.
After her retirement, she moved to Bethel, where she had lived for the past 24 years. For the past eight months, she had lived with her daughter, Sheila Johnson of Brooklyn, Conn.
Mrs. Fogarty was very active in community affairs. She was a 10-year member of the Redding Democratic Town Committee; a charter member of the Bridgeport Women's Traffic Organization and the registrar of voters for the 2nd District.
She was a past president of the Gilbert and the Bennett School PTA in Georgetown; a past president of the Sacred Heart Church Rosary Society; a past chairperson of the Bethel 60-Plus Club; an activities coordinator for the American Association of Retired Persons; and a volunteer for the Red Cross.
Mrs. Fogarty was a member of the Bethel Commission on Aging, of the Ancient Order of Hibernians-Women's Auxiliary in Danbury and of the Columbiettes of the Knights of Columbus in Ridgefield.
In 1989 Mrs. Fogarty received the AARP Outstanding Service award for her volunteer work as a medical insurance adviser to senior citizens.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by a son, Shawn W. Fogarty of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Birthe H. Melville
Birthe H. Melville, 66, a travel agent for Horizon Travel Service of Ridgefield and active in community affairs in Newtown, died Tuesday at her home on Alder Drive, Sandy Hook.
She was the wife of the late Lincoln R. Melville.
Born in Aalborg, Denmark, June 9, 1931, she was a daughter of Lars Haubo and Elka Magda Christensen.
Mrs. Melville, a resident of Newtown for 25 years, became a U.S. citizen in 1975.
She was a member of the board of managers of the Edmund Town Hall in Newtown; a former member of the Newtown legislative council; and a member and former treasurer of the Newtown Democratic town committee.
Mrs. Melville also was a member of the Newtown Women's Club and the Business & Professional Women's Club and a former director of the Newtown Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include two daughters, Clarie L. Melville of Sandy Hook and Nora L. Melville of Waterbury; a brother, Kjeld Haubo of Denmark; four sisters, Tove Kogstad, Kirsten Worm, Hanne Rasmussen and Ase Bruse, all of Denmark; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas R. Griffith
Commander Thomas R. Griffith, USN, Retired, 79, a former project manager at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, died Wednesday at Danbury Hospital.
Mr. Griffith, of 3 Wendover Road, Newtown, was the husband of Patricia Aldred Griffith.
Born in Roundup, Mont., May 18, 1918, he was a son of Richard and Ann Jones Griffith.
Mr. Griffith served in the Navy from 1943 during World War II to 1958.
A resident of Newtown since 1958, he was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church of Brookfield and the Norwalk Ski Club and a former member of the Masons and the Shriners.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Thomas K. Griffith and Kerry Griffith, both of Park City, Utah, and Kent H. Griffith of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Kimberly Griffith of Greenville, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
