Mary S. Smith
Mary S. Smith, 90, of Old Greenwich, died Monday, April 10, 2000 of natural causes at the Nathaniel Witherell Home. She was the wife of the late John J. Smith.
Born in Wiescherhosen, Germany September 25, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Eva Shidle. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of St. Clement's Church.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Marcia L. Smith of Greenwich; two sons, Phillip G. Smith of West Redding and Calvin E. Shultz of Old Greenwich; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A prayer service will be held at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, on Thursday, April 13, 2000 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Ida A. Kanouse
Ida A. Kanouse died April 10, 2000 at the Danbury Hospital at the age of 76. She was the wife of the late Oliver Kanouse and lived at 198 Main St., Ives Manor, in Danbury.
Mrs. Kanouse was born in Camden, N.J. December 21, 1923, daughter of the late Giuseppe and Rosa Zuppa Villecco and received her education there. She was a seamstress in the garment industry most of her adult life and retired to Danbury 7 years ago.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Vincent J. Cappiello Sr. of Brookfield and three grandchildren, Vincent Jr. of Danbury, Michele Hunter of Edwardsville, Kansas and Dawn Williams of Brookfield; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Anita Cappiello in 1981.
Funeral services will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Gregory Mecca officiating.
Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Restland Memorial Park in E. Hanover, N.J.
Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

Charles J. Carr Sr.
Charles J. "Chick" Carr Sr., 73, of Kenosia Trail, Danbury, died on April 5, 2000 at home. He was the husband of Dorothy Poodiack Carr.
Mr. Carr was born in Bethel on August 8, 1926, a son of the late Edwin N. and Lucy Beard Carr. He was a truck driver who worked at Fairfield Testing, O & G Industries, Tedesco, the City of Danbury and the Town of Bethel. After his retirement he was employed at Millerton Orchards and as a crossing guard for the City of Danbury at the Morris Street School corner. During the busy season, Chick also helped deliver flowers for Massena's. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #120, the Amerigo Vespucci Lodge and the Mill Plain Fire Dept. Independent Hose Co. #12. An avid race car fan, Chick was the flagman at the Danbury races as well as the Plainville and Bridgeport racetracks.
Chick would go out of his way to help anyone. He dearly loved his wife, Dorothy, and it was with deep regret that he opted for long-term care for her. It broke his heart. They were friends, but they were also soul mates. He will be missed very much.
Besides his wife of 38 years, Chick is survived by a son, Charles J. Carr Jr. of Japan; 2 daughters, Deborah Hoss of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Charlene R. Braden of Bethel; a sister, Edwina Main of Bethel and 2 grandsons, Adam Falis and Robert Braden, both of Bethel. He was predeceased by a son, William Carr.

Manuel Bonfim Trindade
Manuel Bonfim Trindade, 69, of 57 Osborne St., Danbury, died unexpectedly at the Danbury Hospital on Friday evening.
He was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, November 18, 1930, son of the late Severino Correa and Maria Madalena (Soares) Trindade. He came to the U.S.A. in 1986 and has been a Danbury resident most of that time. He had been employed at the Schein Pharmaceutical Co. of Brewster, N.Y. Mr. Trindade was an avid runner and was considered one of the top "Senior" runners in the state of Connecticut.
He is survived by his wife, Dina Garcia Trindade; two daughters, Diva DeAguiar of Danbury and Marcia Scher of Hudson, Mass.
Funeral Services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
Ruth Courter Meissner
Ruth Courter Meissner, age 84, of Sarah Sanford Road, Bridgewater, died at her home on Sunday. She is the widow of William A. Meissner.
Mrs. Meissner was born August 12, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harry W. and Bessie Visser Courter. Mrs. Meissner attended Packer Collegiate Institute and Arlington Junior College in Virginia. She was a teacher in the Waldorf School, Garden City, N.Y. Mrs. Meissner has been a resident of Bridgewater since 1971. She was a volunteer in the Bridgewater Public Library and an avid gardener. Mrs. Meissner was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Bridgewater.
Mrs. Meissner is survived by three sons, John A. Meissner, New Milford, David C. Meissner, Alfred Station, N.Y. and Christopher A. Meissner, Wolfeboro, N.H.; three grandchildren, John H. Meissner, Thomas C. Meissner and Kristen E. Meissner.
Memorial service will be held in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Bridgewater on Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock. There no calling hours.

Oliver M. White
Oliver M. "Whity" White, age 72, of Sebring, Fla., formerly of Bethel and New Milford, died on March 3rd in Sebring, Fla. following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Carol E. (Chandler) White.
Mr. White was born in Bridgeport, July 7, 1928, a son of the late Oliver and Jennie White. He grew up in Greenwich, graduating from schools there and served with the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, stationed in Alaska from 1946 thru 1949.
From 1949 until his retirement in 1992, Mr. White was employed by the Perkin Elmer Corp. as a Sr. Optical Technician. He was a past officer in the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member of the New Milford Ambulance Service.
Mr. White is survived by his son, Steven of New Milford; a daughter, Susan of Sebastian, Fla.; one brother, Kashmir of Bethel; four grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.
Mr. White was predeceased by his daughter, Laurie.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 15th in St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel at 10:30 a.m.

Edward James Ferriss
Edward (Eddie) Ferriss, 67, of 4406B Quarters, Quantico, Virginia died Saturday, April 8, 2000 at his home after a short illness with cancer.
Mr. Ferriss was born in New Milford on September 5, 1932, son of Julia (Sheskey) Ferriss of New Milford and the late Sheldon Ferriss.
He had been a constable for the Town of Bridgewater, a member of the Bridgewater Fire Department and a Military Police Sergeant in the 3909th Air Police Squadron USAF.
After retiring from his self-employed plumbing business and serving the Town of Brookfield School System in the Maintenance Department, he became a man of travel. He set up residence in Newport, N.C., Lakeland, Fla. and Quantico, Va.
Besides his mother, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Stuart Ferriss and wife, Shaun, of Cary, N.C. and Jay Edward Ferriss and wife, Dawn, of Quantico, Va.; and four grandchildren, Kyle Craig and Kent Edward of Quantico, Melinda Nicole and Meghan Renae of Cary; one brother, Sheldon Ferriss of New Milford; and one sister, Jean Krenick of New Milford; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge St., New Milford, with the Rev. Harry Lee Knisely of St. John's Episcopal Church, New Milford, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, April 14 from 6 to 7 p.m. Private burial will take place at the West Meetinghouse Cemetery, New Milford.

Elizabeth Beckman
Elizabeth Flannery Beckman, age 87, of Danbury, died on April 1st at the Pope John Paul Center for Healthcare. She was the wife of the late Francis E. Beckman.
Mrs. Beckman was born in County Mayo, Ireland, May 5, 2000, a daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine (Mellett) Flannery.
She is survived by her brother, John Flannery of Ireland; her sister, Margaret O'Neil of Danbury; three nieces, Margaret O'Keefe of Bethel, Maura Flannery-Hendrick of Malvern, Long Island and Aideen Flannery-Nolan of Waterbury and several great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 14th at the Church of St. Mary, Bethel at 10:00 a.m.
Burial will be in the Long Island Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island.
There are no calling hours.

Mary C. Tobin
Mary C. Tobin, R.N., 86, wife of former Danbury Police Chief William F. Tobin of Crow's Nest Lane, Danbury, died at the Bethel Health Care Center on Tuesday evening.
She was born in Danbury, October 15, 1913, daughter of the late James A. and Sarah (O'Brien) Coyle. She was a graduate of Danbury High School, class of 1931-B and a graduate of the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Bridgeport, class of 1934.
Following graduation, Mrs. Tobin worked in the St. Vincent's emergency room for a year and then became the assistant to the administrator of the school of nursing. She later left St. Vincent's and performed general nursing duties at Danbury Hospital and also performed private duty nursing.
In 1943, Mrs. Tobin became associated with Dr. Felix Tomaino in his private practice and became his assistant as the health director for the City of Danbury. In 1962, Mrs. Tobin accepted the position as "school nurse" in the Redding School, Redding, CT.
For 10 years, while working in Redding, she served on the board of directors for the Salvation Army for the Town of Redding and was able to assist many of her students in health matters.
Mary and Bill celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past April 7th.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sisters, Sarah "Sally" Lee of Weston, Jean Oldham of Southbury and Sheila Dolan of Florida; and several nieces and nephews, including James A. Coyle of Huntington, who, as a youth, had made his home with the Tobins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, Danbury, on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Calogero J. Ingala
Calogero J. "Chuck" Ingala, 69, of 148 Caver St., Waterbury, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. He was the widower of Carmela (Maturo) Ingala.
Chuck Ingala was born in Waterbury, Nov. 28, 1930, a son of the late Calogero and Catherine (Brucolari) Ingala.
During the Korean War, he served as gunner on a P-29 for the U.S. Air Force.
Before his retirement, he had worked for 30 years at White Trucks and then for 10 years at Murphy Transportation.
Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Terri and Ken Greenfield of Newtown; his two brothers, Vincent Ingala of Wolcott and Angelo Ingala of Alabama; his two sisters, Theresa DellaCroce of Waterbury and Grace Hernandez of Florida; four grandchildren, Leslie, Michelle, Joseph and Dana Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Joseph Ingala.
A funeral procession will leave at 8 a.m. Friday from the Colasanto Funeral Home, 932 Bank St., Waterbury, for a 9:30 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
