Merle Thomas Borst
Merle Thomas Borst, 66, of 29 Upper Mallet Lane, New Milford, died Thursday, November 25, 1999. He was the husband of Nancy (Salisbury) Borst.
Mr. Borst was born in Oneonta, N.Y. May 13, 1933, a son of the late Paulo and Florence (Smeaton) Gonzales. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. He had owned and operated Merle's Barber Shop in Brookfield for many years before his retirement.
Active in Masonic circles, he was a member of the Candlewood Shrine Club, Crusader Commandery #10 K.T., a member of Union Lodge #40 A.F. & A.M., Eureka Chapter #23 RAM, Wooster Council #28 R & S. M. He lived in Brookfield for some 30 years before moving to New Milford in 1987.
Survived by his wife; three sons, Keith G. Borst of Austin, Texas, Gary J. Borst of Rancho Santa Marguerita, Calif. and Craig A. Borst of Danbury; a stepson, James G. Beam of Hulls Cove, Maine; two daughters, Janice A. Borst of New Milford and Phyllis J. Andersen of Cape Coral, Fla.; one brother, Paul Gonzales of Brookfield; four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Lola Borst Smith.
Funeral Services on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford.
Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Margaret J. Backes
Margaret J. Backes, 83, of 12 Woody Place, Ridgefield, died Tuesday at Filosa Convalescent Center in Danbury. She was the wife of the late John J. Backes Jr.
Mrs. Backes was born in Forest Hills, Queens on June 18, 1916, a daughter of the late Hans E. and Anna Eisenschenk Jaeger. She married her late husband on November 15, 1944 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York City.
A summer resident of Ridgefield since 1939, Mrs. Backes became a permanent resident in 1972, moving here from Stuyvesant Town in New York City.
A Records Clerk with the Ridgefield Police Department, Mrs. Backes was most recently a Secretary with the Parks and Recreation Department in Ridgefield, retiring in 1990.
An active member of St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield, Mrs. Backes was a member of the Rosary Society and a co-chairwoman of the Church Fair Raffle. She was a former member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Manhattan.
Survivors include three sons, Rev. John J. T. Backes, Pastor of St. Gregory Barbarigo in Garnerville, N.Y., Ralph R. Backes of Ridgefield and Christopher J. Backes and his wife, Paula (Polly) Backes of Downers Grove, Ill.; one brother, Frank Ralph Jaeger of Goffstown, N.H.; one sister, Dorothy Richardson of Saunderstown, R.I.; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Jesse Backes of Downers Grove, Ill.
Mrs. Backes was predeceased by a brother, John Jaeger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends will be received on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.
Esper S. "Jack" Shaker
Esper S. (Jack) Shaker, 90, of Plainville, and formerly New Britain and Danbury, widower of Elizabeth "Maym" Shaker, died Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at the Hospital for Special Care, New Britain.
Jack was born in Waterbury and was the son of the late Anthony J. and Labibe (Assaff) Shaker. Jack was a member of Saint Jerome Roman Catholic Church.
Jack, along with his late wife, Maym, owned and operated Maym's Restaurant in New Britain for twenty years. He worked in many area restaurants and also owned, with his brothers and sisters, Shaker's Kenwood Inn in New Milford. In 1973, Jack opened up Shaker's Package Store in New Britain and operated the store for several years.
Jack was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Daly Council, New Britain and the Lebanese Businessmen Association in Waterbury. Jack enjoyed bowling, playing cards, especially Greek Rummy. Jack was also a member of the Independent Political Club of New Britain.
Jack is survived by one son, Paul A. Shaker Sr. of New Britain; one daughter-in-law, Kathleen McNamara of Farmington; one brother and sister-in-law, Marshall and Nellie Shaker of Danbury; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Jenny Matney of Waterbury and Frieda and Larry Crooker of Danbury; three grandchildren, Kelly, Paul Jr. and Kari; two great grandchildren, Ricky and Brigid; three sisters-in-law, Marge Shaker of Daytona Beach, Fla., Selma Haddad of Wolcott and Tina Haddad of New Britain; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jack was predeceased by four brothers Shaker, Joe, Eli and Danny Shaker; two sisters, Florence Antous and Laurice Shaker; one brother-in-law, Frederick Haddad Sr.; one granddaughter, Kathleen "Katie" Shaker.
Funeral Rites will be held Saturday, December 11, 1999 at 9 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker/Farmingdale Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, followed by a funeral liturgy 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Jerome, Slater Rd., New Britain.
Committal Service and Final Resting Place will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Relatives and Friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker/Farmingdale Funeral Home, Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Directions to funeral home take I-84 East or West Exit 37 (Fienemann Rd.) Right off exit Funeral home one mile down on right. Pallbearers will be Mim Haddad, Ricky Entralgo, Mark Chory, former Mayor William J. McNamara, Ray Antous and Richie Antous.
Elmer Burger
Elmer Burger, 96, retired proprietor of the former Burger Brothers Grocery Store, and a resident of Southbury for many of his retirement years, died Sunday at Filosa Convalescent Center in Danbury.
Mr. Burger was born in New York City, November 24, 1903, a son of the late Edward L. and Mariah Vierne Burger, and had established his home in the King Street District of Danbury in 1920.
He and his late brother, Edward Burger, founded their I.G.A. store at the corner of North Street and Second Avenue in 1922 and continued their partnership in business until 1970. Mr. Burger had been married to the late Muriel Berry Burger for over 53 years and they had made their home in Great Plain until moving to Southbury in 1974.
He was a local pioneer of aviation and flew airplanes from the Danbury Airport during its formative years and had been a member of the First Congregational Church in Danbury for many years.
Although predeceased by his brother and two sisters, Edna and Emma Burger, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Thomas St. Jean of Danbury and Victoria and Arthur Volinski of Sharon; and a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Henry and Barbara Burger of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandsons; two granddaughters; and a niece, and a nephew; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Mountainview Cemetery, New Fairfield, on Friday at 2:00 p.m.

Adolph Amend
Adolph Amend, 87, of Anderson Road West, Sherman, died at his home as a result of injuries received in a fire in his home. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Handy) Amend.
He was born in Englewood, N.J. November 29, 1912, a son of the late Adolph and Alice (Howland) Amend.
He was a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., after which he was employed by General Time Corporation in New York City from 1939-1951. He was later a member of the faculty at the Englewood School for Boys for 24 years, where he had been a dedicated and esteemed educator. He retired to Sherman in 1975, after which he was a longtime teaching volunteer at the South Kent School in Kent.
He was a faithful member of the Sherman Congregational Church, where he had served as a Deacon, Organist and Choir member. He was dearly loved and respected by those whose lives he touched.
He is survived by two sons, Arthur Amend of Brookfield and Kenneth Amend of Charleton, Mass.; two daughters, Catherine George of Willow Grove, Pa. and Priscilla McSweeney of New Fairfield; one brother, David Amend of Florida; two sisters, Dorothy Rollenhagen of New Jersey and Nancy Snyder of Connecticut; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Sherman Congregational Church.

Eldon H. Lund
The death of Eldon H. Lund, 76, of Nabby Road, Brookfield, occurred at the Danbury Hospital Wednesday morning.
He was born in Danbury July 26, 1923, a son of the late Harry C. and Mae Swanson Lund and was a lifelong resident of Brookfield.
Mr. Lund was a graduate of Danbury High School Class of 1941.
A Veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre with the Army Engineers, he was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the Army of Occupation Medal of Japan and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon.
He was a Lover of the Land, was an avid Gardener and Farmer operating a small Brookfield Farm.
By trade he was a Machinist and had been employed for over 40 years with the Amphenol Corporation.
He was a member of the Congregational Church of Brookfield and an Honorary Volunteer for the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Dept.
Surviving is his sister, Marjorie L. Prokopy of Brookfield; two nephews, Kenneth L. Lund of Dix, Illinois and Gary A. Lund of Cocoa, Fla.; a niece, Darlene L. Burr of Washington; and several grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, Brookfield, Saturday morning at 11:00 with the Rev. Susan G. Latourette, of the Congregational Church of Brookfield, officiating.
Burial will follow at Central Cemetery, Brookfield.
Friends may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home, Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00.

George Arnold Beckett
George Arnold Beckett, of 8 Oasis Road, Cabot, Arkansas, passed away October 28, 1999. He was the son of Arnold and Grace (Nichols) Beckett.
He lived for many years in Bethel and graduated from Bethel High School Class of '39. He moved to Arkansas in 1970 with Remington Arms, where he retired in 1979 after 39 years of service as Chief Supervisor of Maintenance. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II with the 109th Seabee's.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty (Staib) Beckett; a daughter, Jane Beckett of Cabot, Arkansas; and granddaughter, Lisa and her husband, Jerry Cleveland of Austin Arkansas; a brother-in-law, Larry Staib and wife, Rita of Bethel; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Staib Conrad of Danbury; also several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Beckett Case.
John W. Spindle
John W. Spindle, of Thornhurst Road, Bear Creek, Pa., died Sunday at Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Surviving are his wife, the former Judy Schriver; sons, Lawrence Spindle, Paul Spindle, John Spindle, Todd Toth, Troy Toth, Patrick Toth; daughters, Sylvia Creamer, Leslie Phillips; 9 grandchildren; sister, Margaret Goheen; and brothers, Robert and Charles Spindle.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass which will be celebrated Saturday at 11:00 in St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice Community Care, 385 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston, PA 18704.

Joanne Cianflone
Joanne Cianflone, 70, of Great Meadow Road, New Fairfield, died Thursday at Danbury Hospital.
Mrs. Cianflone was the wife of the late Mario Cianflone.
She was born in Middletown November 29, 1929, a daughter of John Adam and Lucy (Baur) Popp.
Mrs. Cianflone lived in Danbury for 15 years before moving to New Fairfield for the past 4 years making her home with her daughter Melanie and son-in-law William Ulicky.
Mrs. Cianflone worked for many years in the food service industry.
Besides her daughter, Melanie Ulicky of New Fairfield, she is survived by her daughter, Ellen Haberern of Southington; her son, Robert Collins of Hawthorne, New York; and 5 stepchildren, Alexis Castle of New Milford, Christopher, Peter, Phillip and Richard Cianflone; her sister, Barbara Brainard of Middletown; and 5 grandchildren, Stephanie, Desiree and Melissa Wade and Justin and Samantha Menard.
