John E. Ginty
John E. Ginty, 75, husband of Rose (Tomaino) Ginty, formerly of 4 Foster St., Danbury, died at the Glen Hill Convalescent Home on Sunday evening.
He was born in Danbury, August 23, 1924, son of the late Thomas F. and Delia (Maher) Ginty. John was a lifetime Danbury resident and had attended Danbury schools. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and had partaken in the Normandy Invasion. He returned to Danbury following the war and went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Danbury in 1947 as a letter carrier. He retired in 1985 after 38 years with the Postal Service.
John was a member of St. Peter Church, N.A.R.F.E., the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Polish American Club, where he was a past president, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Amerigo Vespucci Lodge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Myong Ginty of New Milford; two brothers, Bernard Ginty and Vincent Ginty, both of Danbury; a sister, Florence Vulcano of Danbury; three grandchildren, Christopher, Brendan and Monica and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Butler in 1996 and by a brother, James J. Ginty in 1998.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Church, Danbury on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will take place in St. Peter Cemetery. Alice G. Hoffman
Alice G. Hoffman, 84, wife of William Hoffman, and a resident of 19 High Ridge Road, Brookfield, died Sunday, February 20, 2000 at Danbury Hospital, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Hoffman was born in New Borough, Mass., April 28, 1915, a daughter of the late Leslie and Margaret Hayes, and had made her home in New Fairfield during her youth, and was educated in the New Fairfield school system and had graduated from Danbury High School. She had been employed at the former W.T. Grant Department Store, until retiring at the time of her marriage. She had made her home in Danbury for many years prior to moving to Brookfield in 1958.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Hoffman is survived by two sisters, Hilda Foley of Danbury and Dorothy Hatch of New Fairfield and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Friends will be received at The Homestead after 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Brookfield, in the springtime.
Louis W. Kolwicz
Louis W. Kolwicz, 76, of Fort Kent, Maine, formerly of Danbury, died at the Fort Kent Hospital on Sunday morning.
He was born in Danbury, February 9, 1924, son of the late Walter and Celia (Zelenski) Kolwicz. He was a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1941 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He graduated from Becker Jr. College in Worcester, Mass. and had worked for many years as an accounting clerk at the Republic Foil Co. in Danbury. He had also owned an antique shop in Danbury for several years. Mr. Kolwicz moved to Fort Kent in 1987 and resided there since.
He is survived by three brothers, Victor Kolwicz of Danbury, Eugene Kolwicz of Missoula, Montana and Emil Kolwicz of Avon, Ohio; his adopted daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Michael Dumond of Fort Kent, Maine; three adopted grandchildren, Shondelle, Michael Jr. and Ruth and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Edwin in 1998.
Funeral Services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Thursday at 12 noon. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

Violet Hall
Violet Hall, 68, of Knottingham Towers, Waterbury, died Monday at her home. She was the wife of the late Elmer Hall.
She was born in Binghamton, New York October 12, 1931, a daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Hulse.
Mrs. Hall lived in Danbury for many years before moving to Waterbury four years ago.
She was a past member of the Brookfield V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Hall of Waterbury and Alan Hall of Newtown; a daughter, Gail Tompkins of Brewster, N.Y.; a brother, Carl Hulse of Arizona; a sister, Ann Bried of Colorado; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury.
Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Homestead. Burial will be in the spring.

Born July 4, 1917, he was a merchant in Danbury for more than 40 years. He was the owner and operator of the Danbury Liquor Store at 18 White St.

Scott Lorentz Sr.
Scott Simpson Lorentz Sr., 76, of 1020 Dunklin Bridge Rd., Fountain Inn, S.C., husband of Effie May Hull Lorentz, died Monday, February 21, 2000 at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in East Liverpool, Ohio, he was a son of the late Tiery Simpson and Carrie White Lorentz. He was retired from the Danbury Police Department, a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and an Army World War II veteran.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two daughters, Karen Rollings of Simpsonville, Sarah Anderson of Greer; four sons, Scott S. Lorentz Jr. of Simpsonville, Kenneth Lorentz of Fountain Inn, Douglas Lorentz and Tarry Lorentz, both of Danbury; four brothers, Ralph Lorentz of Columbus, Ohio, Joseph Lorentz, Harry Lorentz, Walter Lorentz, all of Zaneville, Ohio; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill United Methodist Church by Rev. Thomas Lewis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family is at the home and will receive friends 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill United Methodist Church.
Henry F. Buxton
Henry F. (Bucky) Buxton, 62, husband of Mary (Mead) Buxton, died peacefully at his home in Newtown on February 20 following a brief illness.
Mr. Buxton was born in Evanston, Ill. on January 13, 1938, a son of the late Henry L. and Doris Chamberlain Buxton. He spent his early life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and later lived in Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958. He was stationed for a time in France, where he met his future wife. They were married in 1958 and moved to Newtown in 1960.
He worked as a tree surgeon with his father-in-law, Sanford Mead. In 1962, he fell some 60 feet from a tree in which he was working and broke his back. The event was a turning point in his life. Thereafter, he used every day of what he viewed as "borrowed time" to become a better person and to help others.
He worked in Mental Health/Addiction services for the State of Connecticut from 1963 until his retirement in 1992. He was a founding staff member of the EDON House Drug Program and eventually became Assistant Program Director of the Berkshire Woods Chemical Dependency Treatment Center. Although he did not finish high school he was so impressed by the efforts of the EDON House program residents to further their education that he joined them in their studies and received his GED in 1977. In 1984 he received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Bridgeport. He was a member of Phi chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society. In addition to his state service, he maintained a private counseling practice until the time of his death.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one brother, R.N. Carros of Douglasville, Georgia; one sister, Leilani Young of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six children, Rolande Paguay of Bethel, Marion Carter of North Plains, Oregon, Nicole Buxton of Stanley, Falkland Islands, Michael Buxton of New Preston, Suzanne Garofalo of Georgetown and Toad Buxton of White River Junction, Vermont; our grandchildren, Mick and Meghann Carter, Nick and Paul Garofalo, and by many, many beloved friends and clients.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Rose Church, Newtown on Tuesday, February 29 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place in Newtown Village Cemetery in the spring.

Rosemary Nero Roshka
Rosemary Nero Roshka, formerly of Danbury, died after a long illness on Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in Fresno, California. She was the wife of Paul Roshka Sr. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Nero Sr. and the late Mary Eliza Nero.
She is survived by a son, Attorney Paul Roshka Jr. of Scottsdale, Arizona and a daughter, Pamela Roshka Daly of Lawrenceville, Georgia and five grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Pauline Nero and Grace Nero Tomaino, both of Danbury; nephews, Joseph Nero III of Trumbull, Dr. Thomas Nero of Danbury and niece, Noreen Tomaino, also of Danbury. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Nero Jr.
She attended Danbury High School, Class of 1940. She also graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She worked at the Danbury Hospital and at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. She received an honorable discharge from the Women's Army Corps. She was discharged with the rank of Sergeant and she served during World War II.
There will be a Memorial Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Cottage St., Danbury at 12:00 noon on February 26 for relatives and friends to pay their respects. Contributions may be made in her memory to the local Hospice or American Cancer Society.
Edward A. Godlewski
Edward A. Godlewski, 82, formerly of 198 Main St., Danbury, died at the Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury on Sunday evening.
He was born in Danbury June 7, 1917, son of the late Andrew and Anna (Zaluska) Godlewski. He had attended Danbury schools and had been a Danbury resident most of his life. He had been employed for many years at the former Shelter Rock Food Market in Danbury.
Mr. Godlewski is survived by a brother, John T. Godlewski of Sanford, Maine; three nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Godlewski in 1989.
Private funeral services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.
Daniel O. Valentine
Memorial services for Daniel O. "Val" Valentine, age 86, of Bethel, who died on January 28th, will be held on Saturday, February 26th at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel at 3:15 p.m., with the Rev. Daniel Wehmeier of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Danbury officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service, through 4:00 p.m.

Dorothy K. (Conelley) Battenfeld
Dorothy K. (Conelley) Battenfeld, 88, of Southbury and Naples, Fla., died Monday February 21st in Naples, Fla. She was the widow of E. Gerard Battenfeld.
Mrs. .Battenfeld was born October 21, 1911 in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of Edward and Katheryn (Cunningham) Conelley. She summered at Vails Grove, Peach Lake, Brewster, N.Y., until making it her permanent home in 1956. Until her retirement in 1967, she had been employed at the Vail Bruen Insurance Agency. She moved to Heritage Village in Southbury in 1995 and spent winters in Naples, Fla.
She leaves two sons, Frederick E. of Naples, Fla. and Eugene G. of Southbury and Riverdale, N.Y.; two grandsons, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass Saturday, February 26th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Main Street South, Southbury. Burial in Center Cemetery, Bridgewater, in the spring. Calling hours: Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the daily chapel of the church. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.

Charles M. Taylor
Charles M. "Bud" Taylor, age 86, of Stony Hill Village, Brookfield died Tuesday at Heritage Heights Nursing Home, Danbury. He was the husband of Ruth Sanford Taylor. Mr. Taylor was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Anderson Taylor.
Mr. Taylor was born in Norwalk July 2, 1913, a son of the late Moses and Edith Merrick Taylor. A resident of Bethel and Danbury most of his life, he was a graduate of Henry Abbott Technical School and the Bridgeport Engineering Institute. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Connecticut National Guard and the 192nd Field Artillery, serving in France and Germany. He was employed for 40 years by SNET, first as a Lineman and then as an Engineer. He was a member of American Legion Post #60, Union Lodge #40 of the Masonic Order, Wooster Council and the Crusader Commandry #10. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Danbury and the AARP. Mr. Taylor also had served on the Board of Directors of the Danbury Cemetery Association.
Besides his first wife, he was also predeceased by a brother, John F. Taylor, formerly of Holiday, Fla.
