William (Bill) Coughlin
William (Bill) Coughlin, a longtime resident of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., died Sunday, January 16, 2000 at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt, N.Y. Mr. Coughlin worked in Traffic Shipping for Berol Corp., formerly Eagle Pencil Co., in Danbury. He was with the company for 50 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of United Pencil Workers in Danbury.
He was born in Bronx, N.Y. to William Sr. and Elizabeth O'Brien Coughlin. He was educated in the Bronx and graduated from St. Peter and Paul's in the Bronx and DeWitt Clinton High School.
Mr. Coughlin served in the Army from 1940 to 1945 attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He belonged to the VFW and American Legion in Yorktown Heights, N.Y.
On August 4, 1956, he married Rita Kersten at St. Brigid's Church in New York, N.Y.
Mr. Coughlin lived in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. for the past 43 years. Before that, he lived in the Bronx, N.Y. from birth to 1956.
Locally, he was a member of St. Patrick's Nocturnal Adoration Society, the Irish American Club and Eagle Berol Gold and Silver Club.
He will be remembered by his nieces and nephews as the strongest man in the world.
He is survived by his wife, Rita and several nieces and nephews in New York, Florida, New Jersey, Washington State and others.
Family members who died earlier include his mother and father, a sister, Marion Gierer and a brother, Robert.
Calling hours are Monday and Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home, Inc., Yorktown Heights, N.Y. The funeral is Wednesday, 11 a.m. at the New St. Patrick's Church.
Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Gretchen S. Schaufelberger
Gretchen S. Schaufelberger, a Real Estate Agent with the William Pitt Real Estate Agency in Danbury, died January 16, 2000 in the Danbury Hospital. Mrs. Schaufelberger was the wife of Roy Schaufelberger and lived at Boggs Hill Rd. in Newtown.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., daughter of the late John and Louise Smitmans. She is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where she received a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry. She was employed as a Chemist for several years for Union Carbide in Pittsburgh, Pa. and New Jersey.
Mrs. Schaufelberger moved to Newtown in 1979 and has worked for William Pitt Real Estate since 1983.
She is a member of the National Association of Realtors and a Communicant of St. Rose Church.
She is survived, besides her husband, by three daughters, Lynn Anne Schaufelberger of Indianapolis, Ind., Paula and her husband, Andrew Carrol of Danbury and Ruth S. and her husband, Cecil Cooper of Ft. Worth, Texas. Also survived by three grandchildren, Kasey and Ashley Honings and Shannon Carrol.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2000 9:30 a.m. from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown and at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial at the convenience of the family. Gary Richard Adams
Gary Richard Adams, 54, of South Street, died at home Saturday, January 15, after a 15 year battle with melanoma. He was the husband of Linda (Schlegel) Adams.
Mr. Adams was born May 5, 1945 in Long Beach, N.J., son of the late Joseph E. and Marion (Smith) Adams. He was an independent insurance agent for 25 years and president of the Connecticut Insurance Agency, Inc.
in Sandy Hook. He graduated from Booth Free School in Roxbury in 1959 and Washington High School in 1963. As a student, he played football and soccer and he received the Charles McGuiness Award for Excellence in Athletics. Mr. Adams received his B.S. in Agricultural Economics in 1960 from the University of Delaware.
He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He served in the Army Reserves from 1968-1974. Upon returning to Roxbury in 1971, he became involved with the Roxbury Board of Finance for 18 years, serving as Chairman for 12 years. Mr. Adams was a 26-year member of the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief
for five years. Mr. Adams served on the Lake Lillinoah Authority and the Civil Defense Commission. He was also the 9-1-1 Coordinator in Roxbury and worked on the development of a house numbering system. Mr. Adams was also a 40-year member of the Roxbury Congregational Church, serving as Chairman of the Stewardship Commission,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Moderator, Vice-Moderator and Treasurer. He was an avid photographer who enjoyed skiing and traveling.
Besides his wife of 31 years, he leaves a son, Brian E. Adams of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Kristin J. Adams of Burlington, Vt.; two brothers, David E. Adams of Bridgewater, N.J. and Douglas G. Adams of Stowe, Vt. He is predeceased by a son, Scott G. and a brother, Lee T. Adams.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Roxbury Congregational Church. Burial will follow at Roxbury Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, Main Street South, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening.

Ruth Pratt Todd
Ruth Pratt Todd, 85, a resident of Redding since 1965, died Wednesday, January 12, at her home after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late James Wilson Todd.
Mrs. Todd was born in Engelwood, New Jersey on August 19, 1914 to August Goubert Pratt and Ruth Nesmith Pratt.
She was a volunteer at the Mark Twain Library and greatly enjoyed animals, particularly her dog, Amy.
Survivors include her sister, Janet Nearmor of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews; and great and great great nieces and nephews. In the area, she leaves behind great niece, Allison Gushee Molkenthin and her daughters, Allegra and Christina of New York; and Gregory Gushee, also of New York. Mrs. Todd was also predeceased by her two sisters, Elizabeth P. Meier and Carol P. Fisher.
A Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, January 23 at 2:30 p.m. in Christ Church Parish, Redding Ridge. The Rev. Kent C. Smith, Rector, will officiate. The interment will follow for those who wish to attend the Umpawaug Cemetery, Redding. This will be followed by a reception at the Mark Twain Library in Redding.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that tax-deductible donations be made to the Mark Twain Library in her name and be sent to the library at Box 1009, Redding, CT 06875.

Gloria J. Swanson
Gloria J. Swanson, 62, of 15 High View Drive, New Milford, died January 12 at New Milford Hospital.
She was the widow of Allan K. Swanson.
Mrs. Swanson was born August 3, 1937, daughter of the late Charles and Rose Greenlaw. She attended St. Francis Xavier School and graduated New Milford High School Class of 1955.
She leaves two daughters, Cheryl Shaw of Torrington, Denise Shanks of Bantam; two sons, Allan of Marbledale, Charles of Bethlehem; six grandchildren.
Rev. Sears will conduct a memorial service Saturday, January 22 at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church, Washington.
Burial in the Spring.

Mrs. Letha B. Toran
Letha B. Toran, age 69, of 20 Spring St., Danbury, departed this life January 14, 2000 at the Danbury Hospital. She is the wife of George M. Toran Sr.
Mrs. Toran was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi April 7, 1930, a daughter of the late Ike Moore Sr. and Willie Mae. In 1951, she moved to Danbury, met and married George M. Toran Sr. Here she lived and worked at the Barden Corporation for 25 years until retirement. They were married happily for 49 years.
Mrs. Toran was an active member at Mt. Pleasant AME Church and in her community. She was a member of the Missionary Society (reaching out spiritually to other people), a founding member and officer of the Ebony Club (a local charitable black women's organization) and an accomplished semi-professional
bowler who traveled the whole country in tournaments. She visited such places as Honolulu, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Tampa, Fla., Tucson and several other states. Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, George M. Toran Jr. of Tampa, Fla., Robert D. Toran of Danbury, Christopher L. Toran of Tumon,
Guam; one daughter, Randi K. Toran of Bridgeport; three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Bush, Mrs. Flora Rodgers, Mrs. Ethel Newsome, all of Danbury; two brothers, Mack Moore of Danbury, Paul Moore of Muskegon Heights, Michigan; one granddaughter, Enisha Blakley of Danbury.
The family will be receiving friends at Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Home going services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Church, 71 Rowan St., Danbury.
Burial services will take place at Wooster Cemetery.
Helen Fass
Helen Fass, beloved mother of Lillian and George Montaigne and Miriam and Michael Kerstein. Cherished grandmother of Michele and Michael Nathel, Daniel Montaigne, Adena and Joshua Kerstein and great-grandmother of Harris and Hailey Nathel. Loving sister of Tania Brightman.
Services were held on Sunday, January 16, 2000. Observance of Shiva will be observed in Connecticut and Great Neck, N.Y.
Gloria Tobin
The death of Gloria Tobin, 70, of Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Kenosia Ave., Danbury, occurred at the Sacramento Hospital, January 11th. She was the wife of the late Andrew Tobin. Mr. Tobin died in Sacramento January 16, 2000.
Gloria Marrone was born in the Bronx, N.Y., March 13, 1929, daughter of Anthony and Olga Gallo Marrone and received her education in Bronx schools. She had been a resident of Danbury for 30 years moving to Sacramento 6 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Tobin were married 24 years.
She had been employed in the Security Office at Danbury Hospital and had also been a product demonstrator at various local stores.
Mrs. Tobin had attended St. Joseph's Church and was a member of Senior groups both in Danbury and Sacramento, Calif. and was a former member of the Amerigo Vespucci Society.
Surviving are two sons, Jack Gentile of Las Vegas, Nev. and Anthony Gentile of Danbury; seven daughters, Rose Marie Feldman, Joann Morrison and Joyce Gentile, all of Danbury, Angela Gentile of Sacramento, Calif., Deborah Jones of Florida,
Cindy Montgomery of Kentucky and Robin Tobin of Florida; two sisters, Rose Marie of Queens, N.Y. and Antonia Mulligan of Michigan; 23 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Yolanda Anzulot.
A Memorial Mass for Mrs. Tobin and her late husband will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd., Danbury, Saturday, January 22nd, at 10:00 a.m.

Andrew Tobin
Andrew Tobin, of Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Kenosia Ave., Danbury, occurred in Sacramento January 16, 2000. He was 66 years of age and husband of Gloria Marrone Tobin. Her death occurred in Sacramento January 11, 2000.
He was born September 7, 1933 in the Bronx, N.Y., son of the late Thomas and Hilda Zimmer Tobin and received his education in Bronx schools.
Mr. Tobin lived in Danbury for 30 years moving to Sacramento 6 years ago. He had served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. and Mrs. Tobin had been married 24 years.
He had been employed as Carpenter Foreman with the Carpenters Union for Metro North for 30 years.
Surviving are seven daughters, Deborah Jones and Robin Tobin, both of Florida, Cindy Montgomery of Kentucky, Rose Marie Feldman, Joann Morrison and Joyce Gentile, all of Danbury and Angela Gentile of Sacramento, Calif.;
two sons, Jack Gentile of Las Vegas, Nev. and Anthony Gentile of Danbury; one brother, Raymond Tobin of New York.; 23 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Theresa Phelan and Catherine Davis and two brothers,
James Tobin and Thomas Tobin.
A Memorial Mass for Mr. and Mrs. Tobin will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd., Danbury, Saturday, January 22nd at 10:00 a.m.
