Hans H. Christians

Hans H. Christians, 68, a resident of Laurelwood Rehabilitation Center, Ridgefield, formerly of Norwalk and Greenwich, died on Wednesday at the Danbury Hospital.

He was the husband of Ann (Geoghegan) Christians of Danbury.

Mr. Christians was born in New York, New York, March 25, 1931, a son of the late Hans and Augusta (Otto) Christians.

He moved to Greenwich with his family at the age of four and resided there until he moved to Norwalk in 1980.

Mr. Christians attended Greenwich schools and graduated from Greenwich High School.

A retired Locksmith, having been employed by the Stuttig Locksmith Company of Greenwich, he was a US Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Mt. Kisco, New York.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Edward Christians of New Canaan and a grandson, Scott Christians.

Mr. Christians enjoyed boating and fishing especially on Long Island Sound.

There will be no formal funeral service. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mr. Christians' memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 12 Byington Place, Norwalk, Connecticut.

The Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue, Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Vera A. Cardillo

Vera A. (Jazinski) Cardillo, 67, wife of Rocco Cardillo, of Ledgemere Dr., Danbury, died at the Danbury Hospital on Thursday morning.

She was born in Danbury, September 22, 1932, daughter of the late George and Anna (Warocz) Jazinski. She was a lifetime Danbury resident and a graduate of Danbury High School, Class of 1950. Mrs. Cardillo was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church in Danbury.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rocco and Sheila Cardillo and Gary and Anne Marie Cardillo of Danbury; seven sisters, Peggy McIntosh of Miami, Fla., Marion Cappellano, Frances Ruppell, Julia Lynch of Danbury, Sophie Bard of Pawling, N.Y.; Dorothy Bauer of Crystal River, Fla. and Ann Pompea of New Fairfield; four grandchildren, Jason, Jared and Seth Cardillo and Sarah Scozzafava; a great-granddaughter, Kaley Goane-Cardillo and several nieces and nephews. Vera was predeceased by a sister, Mary Stavola.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Danbury on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Department at Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.

Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Harry William Thorp

Harry William Thorp, age 72 of Parrish, Fla., formerly of Brewster, N.Y., died in Vidalia, Ga. unexpectedly.

He was born September 28, 1927 in Brewster, the son of the late Harry and Emma (Wilsea) Thorp. He attended Brewster schools and had lived in Brewster most of his life moving to Sarasota, Fla. in 1973. He worked for many years for the Suburban Propane Company and retired in 1990. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Florence (Hinsch) Thorp of Parrish, Fla., one son Glenn Thorp of Sherman, 2 daughters Karen Brown of Sarasota and Wendy Foley of Sherman and 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at the Sherman Congregational Church in Sherman on Saturday, January 29 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Milltown Rural Cemetery, Brewster. Contributions may be made to Christ The King Lutheran Church Building Fund, 23456 Olean Blvd., Port Charlotte, Fla., 33980.

Michael J. Setaro

The death of Michael J. "Dodd" Setaro, 71, of Wixon Road, Danbury, occurred at his home Thursday evening. He was the husband of Betty Jo Lumb Setaro.

Born in Danbury, March 23, 1928, son of the late Frank A. and Bernice LeRoy Setaro, he was a lifelong resident and attended St. Peter School and Danbury High School, Class of 1946. He continued his education at Becker College and graduated with a degree in business.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in Germany with the Army Signal Corps and was a recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal.

Mr. Setaro had been employed by Texaco Oil as a sales representative in their Real Estate Division for 20 years and later with the Danbury Finance Co. for 10 years.

"Dodd" was a member of St. Gregory the Great Church.

As a young man, he was a pitcher for the Danbury schools' baseball teams and also at Becker College. He later pitched in the Danbury Industrial League for the Seamann Lynch Team and the Danbury Indians and in several other Danbury leagues.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael J. Setaro Jr. of Brookfield; 2 daughters, Gail P. Fruechtenicht and Joanne Malone, both of Danbury; a brother, Peter Setaro of Ocala, Fla.; 3 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Setaro.

Private funeral services will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St. Interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to Regional Hospice, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810.

William E. Miller

William E. "Bill" Miller, age 55, of Bethel, CT, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 25th, at the Putnam County Hospital, Carmel, New York. He was the beloved husband of Diane M. (Woodin) Miller.

Mr. Miller was born in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, April 8, 1944, a son of the late Ellis Augustus and Priscilla Marie (Fetter) Miller, Bill moved to Connecticut from Pennsylvania in 1962. In 1965, he formed the Connecticut Foundations Corporation, which he owned and operated until 1984. He then started the Miller Construction Corporation that same year, operating the business until the time of his death.

Mr. Miller was heavily involved with one of the first major waves of residential development in the greater Danbury area, beginning in the mid-1960s.

Bill contributed much of his time, effort and love in helping to build homes for Habitat for Humanity of Litchfield Hills and was also instrumental in the construction of the BMX Racing Track in Bethel, CT.

Remembered for his generosity, commitment and love he gave to all, Bill will be truly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to his wife of 17 years, Bill is survived by his loving daughter, Lisa D. Miller of Sandy Hook, CT; two loving stepsons, David J. and Kevin M. Kargle, both of Bethel, CT; five brothers, Charles Miller of Bedford, PA, Ellis Miller of Ligonier, PA, Richard Miller of New Florence, PA, Frank Miller of Danbury, CT, and Paul Miller of Latrobe, PA; three sisters, Elizabeth Clark of Latrobe, PA, Shirley Newman of New Milford, CT, and Delores Busch of Butler, PA; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, as well as his former wife, Alice L. Miller of Sandy Hook, CT.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, February 1st, at the Grace Faith Assembly, 20 Old Ridgebury Road, Danbury, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the Hull Home, Sixty Division Street, Danbury, CT, on Monday from 4 through 8 p.m.

Edward J. Dick

Edward J. Dick, age 79, husband of Judy (Collins) Dick of Shady Rest Boulevard, Sandy Hook, died Friday, January 28, 2000, in the Danbury Hospital.

Mr. Dick was born in Carbondale, PA, February 14, 1919, a son of the late Anthony and Clara (Balcon) Dick. Formerly of North Massapequa, NY, he was a resident of Sandy Hook the past 30 years. He was a Claims Manager for Allstate Insurance Company for 26 years until retiring 12 years ago. Mr. Dick was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

For 16 years, Mr. Dick was the president of the Shady Rest Association. He was a charter member of the Lake Zoar Authority and served as a constable for the Town of Newtown. He was a longtime member of the Newtown Republican Town Committee. Mr. Dick served on the Board of Directors Housing for the Elderly. He had been a volunteer driver for both Meals on Wheels and F.I.S.H.

Besides his wife, he is survived by nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 31, 2000, at 10:00 a.m. from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, and at 10:30 in St. Rose of Lima Church for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place in St. Rose Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Alfred W. Coleman

Alfred W. Coleman, age 72, the former owner and chef of the Newtown Inn, died Thursday, January 27, 2000, at Ellenville Community Hospital, Ellenville, NY. Mr. Coleman was the husband of Florence "Sue" (Wuchter) Coleman and was a resident of Ellenville since 1986 and prior to that, a resident of Newtown.

He was born in Milford, MA, June 27, 1927, a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Waters) Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 in Newtown. He was a former member of the Newtown Fish and Game Club and a past president of the Rondout Valley Rod and Gun Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include 6 sons: Michael Coleman of New Milford, CT, Timothy Coleman of Plainville, CT, Daniel Coleman of Waterbury, CT, Arthur Degenhardt of Waterbury, Kim S. Degenhardt of Los Lunas, NM, and Jay S. Degenhardt of Sandy Hook; 5 daughters, Margie Coughlin of Newtown, Maureen Sanzone of Waterbury, Debora Garre of Orange, CT, Donna Coulson of Wolcott, CT; and Terri D. White of Warren, CT; 1 sister, Dorothy Pantano of Hartwick, MA; 21 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by 3 brothers, Roy Coleman, Charles Coleman and Harold Coleman.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, January 31, 2000, at 7:00 p.m. in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. Burial will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

John Beers

John Beers, 44, died unexpectedly at his home in Selden, NY, on Jan. 27.

Born Aug. 18, 1955, he was the son of Robert and Rose Beers of Putnam Lake, NY. John attended school in Deer Park, NY and was self-employed as a machinist.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a son, Keith Beers, of Long Island, NY; three sisters, Jodi Beardsley and Leslie Pattison, both of Newtown, CT, and Doreen Solomon of Milton, MA. He also is survived by seven nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced.

Daniel O. Valentine

Daniel O. Valentine, 86, of Bethel, died Friday at the Bethel Health Care Center. He was the husband of Dorothy M. (Maxson) Valentine.

Mr. Valentine was born on May 30, 1913, in New York, N.Y., a son of the late Daniel H. and Edna M. (Dutcher) Valentine. He grew up in Palisades, N.J., and was a 1936 graduate of the College of New Paltz. He received an M.A. in Education from New York University.

Before his retirement in 1978, he had worked for 33 years as a mathematics teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Norwalk.

Mr. Valentine was a 40-year member of St. Johns Lodge #6, AF and AM, where he was a Past Master, 1967. A Bethel resident for 31 years, he and his wife were members of the MadHatters Square Dance Club.

Besides his wife of 61 years, he is survived by two sons, Gary E. Valentine of Bethel and David B. Valentine of Higganum, Conn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will take place on a date to be announced.

The Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie L. Wilber

Marjorie L. Wilber, 86, widow of William W. Wilber Sr. and a resident of Houston, Texas, and formerly of Crescent Dr., Danbury, died Saturday at Harborside Glen Hill Center, Danbury.

Mrs. Wilber was born in Danbury, July 22, 1913, a daughter of the late Harry and Julia Roberts Sturges and had been a graduate of Danbury High School and later, a business school in Florida. She had made her home in Danbury with her husband of over 50 years, who was a longtime service manager at the former Fair Cadillac-Oldsmobile Co. of Park Avenue, and she had been a devoted member of the Christian Science Church, currently belonging to the Seventh Church of Christ, Scientists in Houston. Locally she had belonged to the Mary Wooster Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and was a former member of The First Church of Christ, Scientists. She was a retailer at the former Evelyn Shop on Liberty Street for many years.

After her husband's passing, she moved to Houston to be closer to her family. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy A. Perry and Miss Helen E. Sturges and niece, Mary Beth Hamilton, all of Danbury; her daughter-in-law, Gloria Wilber of Magnolia, Texas; two step granddaughters and a step great-grandson and several cousins. Both her husband and son, William W. "Mike" Wilber Jr. have predeceased her.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Tomlinson Homestead, 336 Main Street, Danbury. The Rev. Richard Edwards, Pastor of the United Methodist Church of Danbury, will officiate. Interment will be in Center Cemetery, South Street, Bethel, in the springtime.

Stella Woodin

Stella Woodin, 90, of 31 Staples St., Danbury, died at Hancock Hall Nursing Home on Saturday evening.

She was born in Newtown August 2, 1909, daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Wojciechowski) Karcheski. She was a graduate of Newtown High School. Mrs. Woodin moved to the Hartford area in the late 1940's and resided there until she moved to Danbury 4 years ago. She is survived by three brothers, Stanley Karcheski of Brookfield, Bernard Karcheski of Meriden, Alfred Karcheski of Bethel and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose Church, Newtown on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Hanahoe Memorial Children's Clinic, 205 Main Street, Danbury, CT 06810.
