Fred B. Jones
Fred B. Jones, 92, of Ridgefield died Wednesday, December 16th at Wilton Meadows Health Care Center in Wilton. He was the husband of the late Ruth Colburn Jones.
Mr. Jones was born in Canada on January 13, 1908, a son of the late William and Annie Laurie Jones. He and his family lived at 136 Lounsbury Road in Ridgefield for over 58 years.
Mr. Jones is fondly remembered as "Farmer Jones" because he was the caretaker of a working farm at the Brewster Estate on Lounsbury Road for over 50 years. He was also a lapidary and a "rock-hound" and had a small business, Fred's Gem Den. He and his late wife, Ruth, spent winters in Arizona after they retired, where he pursued rock-hound interests. During the early 60's Fred was also Dog Warden for the Town of Ridgefield.
Besides his late wife of 66 years, Fred was also predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include Raymond S. Jones of Gouldsboro, Maine, Douglas E. Jones of Anchorage, Alaska, Colburn D. Jones of Sherman and Berthann Jones of Guilford. Seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive.
A Memorial Service will be conducted Wednesday, January 5th, 2000 at the Jesse Lee Memorial United Methodist Church, Ridgefield at 11 a.m.

Clotevao Ferreira
Clotevao Ferreira, 65, of 88 Town Hill Avenue, Danbury, husband of Maria (Aguiar) Ferreira died on Sunday morning, December 19, 1999 at the Danbury Hospital.
Mr. Ferreira was born in Brazil January 3, 1934, a son of the late Estevao and Clotilde (Cabral) Ferreira.
He immigrated to this country in 1985, coming from Brazil.
Mr. Ferreira was a retired maintenance man and was a member of the Brazilian Community of Saint Peter Church, Danbury.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Charles, Marco, Julius and Estevao, all of Danbury; two daughters, Regina Lima and Regina Galvao, both of Danbury; two brothers, Robert of Waterbury and Joseph of Brazil; three sisters, Luzia Campos of Danbury, Clotilde Nascimento and Eudoxia Ferreira, both of Brazil as well as twelve grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment will take place in Brazil.

Robert W. Hickey
Robert W. Hickey, 71, husband of Catherine (Johnson) Hickey of Stony Hill Village, Brookfield and Delray Beach, Florida, died at Hospice By the Sea in Boca Raton, Florida on Sunday morning.
He was born in Queens, New York, September 15, 1928, son of the late William L. and Alice Manley Hickey and prior to his retirement had worked as an Asbestos Insulator. Mr. Hickey had lived in Norwalk for many years, prior to moving to Brookfield three years ago.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Gerald Greene of Bethel; two brothers, Kenneth Hickey of Stony Brook, N.Y., and William Hickey of Los Altos, Calif.; two grandchildren, Scott Greene and Kristen Greene of Bethel and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, Bethel, on Thursday morning at 10:00. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury on Wednesday afternoon and evening from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

George Anthony Taft
George Anthony Taft, 62, beloved husband of Linda (Stewart) Taft and loving father of Michael S. and Jennifer P., died Tuesday, December 21, 1999 at Danbury Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Taft was born in Providence, R.I. on May 29, 1937, a son of the late Paul and Isabelle Feid Taft. He attended Providence schools and graduated high school in Peterborough, N.H. Mr. Taft served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict for 4 years. He was an alumnus of the University of New Hampshire Class of '65, where he received his B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering. He received an MBA from Northeastern University in 1975.
Mr. Taft began his career in 1965 with Sanders Associates of Nashua, N.H. He left Sanders Lockheed as a Vice President after 22 happy and rewarding years. He joined Loral Corp. of Yonkers, N.Y. in 1987 as an Executive Vice President. He and his wife moved to Ridgefield in 1988 from Amherst, N.H. He retired from Lockheed in 1996.
His last year was spent working in England on a project with the CAA of the United Kingdom. He and his wife spent a wonderful year living in London.
Besides his wife and son of San Francisco and daughter of Boston, survivors included two sisters, Constance Needham of New York City and Paula Rogers of Concord, N.H. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield. Burial will follow in Mapleshade Cemetery, Ridgefield.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

Epolio V. Macchiaverna
Epolio V. "Al" Macchiaverna, 86, of 24 Tamarack Avenue, Danbury, husband of Ethel (Fallat) Macchiaverna, died on Tuesday afternoon, December 21, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Macchiaverna was born in West Virginia, June 17, 1913, a son of the late Michael and Philomena (Ragazzo) Macchiaverna. He attended schools in West Virginia and later moved with his family to Kentucky.
A resident of Danbury since 1929, Mr. Macchiaverna was a retired Inspection Foreman for Sikorsky Aircraft of Stratford. He was a member of Saint Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church of Danbury as well as a member of its Golden Dome Bakers.
In early years, Mr. Macchiaverna was active in the Boy Scouts of America program as a troop leader and also was involved in the sport of lightweight boxing. As a lightweight boxer, Mr. Macchiaverna was a recipient of the Golden Glove Championship Award.
In addition to his wife of forty-three years, he is survived by two daughters, Gale Bassett and Bernadette Dennis, both of Danbury; a son, Stephen Macchiaverna of Brookfield; two brothers, his twin brother, Patrick Macchiaverna and John Macchiaverna, both of Danbury; two sisters, Mary Canale and Frances Trocolla, both of Danbury as well as seven grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday evening at 7:30 in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 13 Pembroke Road, Danbury, with the Rev. Michael G. Popson, officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury, on Friday at 10 a.m.
Friends will be received in St. Nicholas Church on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sara C. Anderson
Sara C. Anderson, 82, of Bailey Ave., Plattsburgh, N.Y. died Tuesday December 21, 1999 at the CVPH Medical Center.
She was born in Rock Hill, S.C., on September 21, 1917, the daughter of Buist Somers Collins and Linnie Gray (Rogers) Collins.
Sara graduated in 1935 from Kings Mountain High School in North Carolina. In 1939 she received her bachelor's from Asheville Teachers College in Asheville, N.C. Sara married Dr. Charles Brooks Anderson in 1940 in Chimney Rock, N.C. She had a long career in elementary education, teaching in Cherryville, N.C., Delmar, New York, Rock Hill, S.C., Marrietta, Ohio and Chestertown, Maryland.
During World War II Sara worked at the Ogden, Utah, Air Force Base in the Personnel Department. She completed her master's in Guidance Counseling at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1964. Mrs. Anderson taught at Campus School, SUNY, Plattsburgh, then she became the Guidance Counselor at Peru Central School and then for Dannemora Free School, retiring due to health in 1974.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Plattsburgh, N.Y. She belonged to various professional associations in Reading, Guidance and Education. Sara was an avid community volunteer every place she lived. She was active in the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts of America. Most recently Sara has belonged to "Ivy Home Dem" Group of SUNY Plattsburgh and Home Bureau.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. C. Brooks Anderson of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; a son, Robert Ellis Anderson and companion, Shelly Morrow, also of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; one daughter, Suzanne Alice Anderson of Aunt Hack Ridge Estates, Danbury. Sara was predeceased by two brothers, Somers Collins and Ernest Collins; three sisters, Grace Ferguson, Ola Parrish and Helen Wheeler. Sara is also survived by her niece, Thelma Holland of Gastonia, N.C., and many other nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Burial will be in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, N.Y., at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Donations in her memory may be made to the "Fitzpatrick Cancer Center at CVPH" Medical Center in Plattsburgh, New York.
Robert J. Salem
The death of Robert J. Salem, 56, of Racebrook Drive, Bethel, occurred at the Danbury Hospital, Thursday, December 30.
He was the husband of Judy Cheng Salem.
Born in Danbury May 16, 1943, son of the late Joseph and Pearl Ephrem Salem, he was a graduate of Danbury High School Class of 1961, Norwalk State Technical School and was a graduate of Monmouth College with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After working for Bell Laboratories and General Electric he started his own research and development company, M.I.T. Development Company in Wilton. He was currently President of Applied Science Corporation, Vice President of M.I.T. Development Corporation and a member of the Board of Directors of Home Diagnostics, Inc. Mr. Salem holds more than 15 patents including Smoke Alarm, Blood Platelet and Heart and Respiratory Monitor Technologies.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Christopher R. Salem of Danbury and Jeffrey T. Salem of New Milford; a daughter, Alice Salem van Deraue of Amsterdam, Holland; one brother, Richard A. Salem of New Fairfield; a sister, Cynthia J. Grimm of Bethel and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth P. Salem.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury, Monday morning at 11:00 with the Rev. Paul E. Beavers, officiating.
Interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Alice B. Moss
Alice Borges Moss, age 70, of Melon Patch Lane, Westport, died Wednesday, December 29, 1999 at her home. She was the widow of Robert E. Moss.
Mrs. Moss was born in Danbury, May 11, 1929, a daughter of the late Joseph M. and Tosca Piacenti Borges. She grew up in Bethel, then traveled the world as a Flight Attendant with Pam Am Airlines. She settled in Westport with her husband where she has lived for many years. Her interest in environmental and preservation issues led her to be a very active volunteer in the Westport Nature Center.
Mrs. Moss is survived by her daughter. Libby Kole of New Canaan; a sister, Lillian Zandri of Ridgefield and two granddaughters.

A private gathering of friends will be held at Alice's home in Westport at the convenience of the family.

Viola M. Potvin
Viola M. Potvin, age 70, of Norwalk, died Thursday at the Norwalk Hospital. She was the wife of Romeo T. Potvin for 51 years. Born May 17, 1929 in Franklin, Vt., Mrs. Potvin was the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace Demar Latimer. She was a 1947 graduate of Enosburg High School in Vermont and was class valedictorian. Mrs. Potvin was an avid bowler, bingo player and world traveler. She was a member of the St. Ann's Society at St. Ladislaus Church in South Norwalk and had a beautiful singing voice. Mrs. Potvin also worked for several years as a bookkeeper for Corday Manufacturing Inc. and had retired from there in 1991.
Survivors also include a brother, Raymond Latimer and his wife, Marie of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; two sisters, Mary Rose Potvin and her husband, Carmi J. Potvin and Dorothy Ledoux, all of Bethel; a brother-in-law, Louis Potvin and his wife, Nancy of Essex Junction, Vt.; a beloved niece and best friend, Marshia King of New Milford; 27 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews, all who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by two nephews, one niece and one grandniece.

Kenneth Davis
Kenneth Davis, age 83, of Danbury, died on Tuesday, December 28th, at his home. He was the husband of Barbara C. (Huss) Davis.
Mr. Davis was born in Danbury, August 27, 1916, a son of the late George W. and Hulda (Orton) Davis. A lifelong resident of Danbury, he graduated from local schools and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II in the 131st Armored Battalion. There, he served in the European Theatre Campaign and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Mr. Davis was employed as caretaker for the Farrington Estate in Danbury for 55 years, retiring 5 years ago.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, Mr. Davis is survived by one son, William N. Davis and his wife, Phyllis, of Boca Raton, Fla.; one granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn Kuszpa and her husband, Michael, of Savannah, Ga.; and three nephews, Norman Davis, and his wife, Pearl, Charles Davis and Terry Evans.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 3rd at the Hull Home, Sixty Division St., Danbury at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Clare M. Ingham, officiating. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 thru 5 p.m.
