C. William McArthur
C. William McArthur, age 81, of Danbury, formerly of Brewster, N.Y., died Sunday, June 4, 2000 at his home.
Mr. McArthur was born November 13, 1918 in Oil City, Pa. to William J. and Hannah (Dahlstran) McArthur. He had graduated from schools in Bradford, Pa. and attended electrical college in Washington, D.C. and Columbia University. Mr. McArthur was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant.
Mr. McArthur married Eileen Ryan on October 13, 1951 at St. Joan of Arc Church in Jackson Heights.
Mr. McArthur was a technician for AT&T in White Plains, N.Y. for 34 years, having retired in 1982. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Danbury VFW post. He was also a former member of the Brewster B.P.O.E. Lodge #2101.
Besides his wife, Mr. McArthur is survived by a brother, Robert McArthur of Jamestown, N.Y. and a sister, Mary Stromberg of East Caldwell, N.J.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, Brewster. A private cremation will follow. Interment of his ashes will take place at a future date at St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery, Brewster. Elizabeth J. Hayes
Elizabeth "Liz" J. Hayes of Bethel, CT, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Bethel Health Care Center, surrounded by her beloved family. Her illness was brief.
She was the wife of William F. Hayes.
Mrs. Hayes was born in Queens, NY, daughter of Betty Callan) Smith of Glen Cove, LI, and the late Terence Smith.
Mrs. Hayes was employed up until her illness by Boehringer Ingelheim Corp. of Ridgefield, CT. She had been a resident of North Bellmore, LI, for 20 years before moving to Bethel in 1984. Mrs. Hayes had been very active in several organizations in Long Island: She was a kindergarten teacher, CCD teacher, Girl Scout leader, Vice President of the Rosary Society, and team leader in Marriage Encounter.
Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by her beloved children, Kerrin Going of Amelia Island, FL, Meegan Modla of Roxbury, NJ, Terrence Hayes of Tewksbury, NJ, and Brian Hayes of Syosset, NY; her four sisters, Marcy Triolo of Savannah, GA, Regina Smith of Seattle, WA, Barbara Kallelis of Moorestown, NJ, and Terry West of Elk Grove, CA; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church in Bethel, Friday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ.
Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Charles M. Oliver
Charles M. Oliver, known to many as Myles, age 92, passed away on June 3 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME. He was the husband of the late Louise (Curtiss) Oliver.
He had lived in Thomaston, ME for the last three years where he made his home with his daughter, Sally, and was close to the home of his other daughter, Sandra Oliver and her husband Jamie MacMillan. Mr. Oliver moved to Thomaston from Thompson, CT. He is also survived by his grandson, Seth L. Johnson of Isleboro, ME.
He retired from the Connecticut State Repair Garage, Brookfield, in May of 1970. Since that time, he and his late wife, Louise Oliver, traveled widely across the United States and Canada, visiting many of the natural wonders and historic sites of this continent. They also attended many state and national events for the National Campers and Hikers Assoc. (a/k/a FCRV). After moving to Thomaston, Mr. Oliver and Sally traveled in New England and Canada and attended a number of large camping events in Pennsylvania with the Society for Creative Anachronism. He and Sandy traveled to Alaska, a trip he had long wanted to do.
Mr. Oliver was born on October 29, 1907 in Nyack, NY and moved to West Cornwall in 1936 with his parents, Charles A. Oliver and Florence S. Oliver. He and his wife were married there in 1941 and lived there until 1949 after his service in France and Germany with the Service Company, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division.
A graveside service will be held at the Cornwall Cemetery on Saturday, June 10 at 10:00 AM. The service will be conducted by the Reverend Scott Cady. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Newbury Congregational Church, P.O. Box 597, Brookfield, CT 06804. The Kenny Funeral Home, 41 Main Street, Sharon has charge of the arrangements.
Natalie S. Spargo
Natalie S. Spargo died at her home on June 5, 2000 at the age of 86. She was the wife of the late Glen Spargo and lived on Valerie Lane in Danbury. Mrs. Spargo was born in Danbury Nov. 22, 1913 daughter of the late William and Anna Deboben Jennings. She graduated from Danbury High School and The Crandall Business School in Danbury. In her early years she worked as a hat trimmer for the F.H. Lee Hat Co. until it's closing. She later joined the Bard Parker Co. in Danbury and worked as an assembler until her retirement. She was a member of St. Gregory Church.
An active volunteer at Glen Hill Convalescent Home and for the R.S.V.P. Program, she also volunteered for the Association of Religious Communities since it's beginning. In 1998 she was honored with a proclamation from Mayor Gene Eriquez as a dedicated Outreach Worker for the City of Danbury's Department of Elderly Services for 20 years and for enhancing the lives of homebound seniors by providing companionship and access to services for those in need. She was a Charter Member of the Danbury Commission on Aging and shared in the development of the Danbury Senior Center and other local agencies serving the elderly.
Mrs. Spargo is survived by her brother William Jennings of Moline Ill., her sister Barbara Ziegler of Danbury and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Louis Jennings. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thurs. at 10 am at St. Gregory Church. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery.
Helen J. Hentschel
Helen J. Hentschel died June 5, 2000 at the Hewitt Memorial Hospital Shelton CT at the age of 92. Formerly of Grand St. in Danbury, she was born in Czechoslovakia Aug. 10, 1907 daughter of the late August and Emma Schmeisz Hentschel and came to this country in 1920. Miss Hentschel received her B.S. from Springfield College and her Masters in Nursing from Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing. She worked at Brooklyn Visiting Nurses Assoc. and studied at New York School of Midwifery. She taught at Brooklyn Lutheran Medical Center teaching student nurses in the area of obstetrics and at Beth Isrial Hospital NY as a teacher to foreign Nursing students to qualify for the NY State Licensing.
She established a School for students of Midwifery in Columbia South America while working for the United Nations World Health Assoc. Miss Hentschel is survived by her brother Emil Hentschel of New York and her sister Anne Radder of Stratford, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Ella Bittlingmaier and brother Karl Hentschel. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home 247 White St. Danbury on Fri. at 10am with Rev.
Daneil Wehmeier officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery Hartsdale NY. Friends may call at the Cornell Memorial Home on Fri. after 9am. Contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church West St. Danbury in her memory.
Louise A. Stefanowski
Louise A. Stefanowski passed away on June 2, at Donnelly Place, Lantana, Florida. A former resident of Brookfield, CT, she moved to Florida a year and a half ago.
Born December 11, 1903, in Stamford, CT, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Mehan, she resided in Stamford until she moved to Brookfield with her brother Jack Mehan in 1976. Her husband John P. Stefanowski died in 1963.
While in Brookfield she was an active member of the Senior Center and St. Joseph Church. She was well known for her arts and crafts. She exhibited her art work in Brookfield, painted all her own greeting cards, and did ceramics and quilting. She made countless gifts for all her family and friends. As a member of the Seniors she was a tireless worker for the annual Christmas Bazaar, soliciting donations and running fund raising booths along with her brother Jack. She received community awards for her volunteer efforts.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Kelly (husband John) of Tivoli, NY and Ann S. Elges (husband Emil) of West Palm Beach, FL, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers.
A funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Name of Jesus Church, West Palm Beach, FL. Burial will take place at St. John Cemetery, Darien, CT. There will be a memorial mass at St. Joseph Church, Brookfield, CT on Saturday, June 17 at 10:00 a.m.

Eleanor W. Hayes
Eleanor W. Hayes, 83, of Stamford, died of respiratory failure June 6, 2000, at Stamford Hospital.
She was the wife of Joseph D. Hayes of Stamford.
Mrs. Hayes was born in Stamford March 16, 1917, the daughter of the late Frederick and Elsa Ernst Butze. A homemaker, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and a volunteer at the Braille Workshop, the Ruth Fellowship, and the OWLS.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Joann M. Urban of Bethel, a son, Frederick J. Hayes of Stamford. and five grandchildren.
Friends may call at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford, on Thursday, June 8, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be in Zion Lutheran Church, 132 Glenbrook Road, Stamford, Friday, June 9, at 10 a.m.
Interment will be private.

Robert G. Davis
Robert G. Davis, Sr., age 77, of Bethel, CT, formerly of Norwalk, CT, died on Tuesday morning at the Bethel Healthcare Center. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Fischer) Davis.
Mr. Davis was born in Danbury, CT, July 19, 1922, a son of the late G. Herald and Xe Marie (Sands) Davis. A graduate of Danbury High School, Mr. Davis entered the U.S. Army in 1942, attaining the rank of Captain, and was the recipient of various campaign medals, and the Purple Heart, Silver and Bronze Stars, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. Upon his discharge from the army, Mr. Davis began his employment with the Southern New England Telephone Co., as a lineman. Employed there for 38 years, he retired as a business office manager.
A resident of Bethel for the last 12 years, previously residing in Norwalk for 23 years, Mr. Davis was a board member and former president of the Norwalk United Way, and a member and board member of the following organizations: the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Relations for Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now (NEON), the Norwalk/Westport YMCA Personnel Committee, the Norwalk Community Council, The American Red Cross of Norwalk, and the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs of Norwalk and Westport.
Mr. Davis was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Pavia Council #48, Bethel, and a 3rd Degree Knight, a founding member and Past Commander of the Catholic War Veterans, Post 1042, of Danbury, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 149, Danbury, and a member of the Church of St. Mary, Bethel, where he served on it's building fund drive. Mr. Davis also served on the building fund drive committees for the following churches: St. Anne's; Milford, CT, St. Luke's; Westport, CT St. Jerome's; Norwalk, CT.
Mr. Davis is survived by 2 sons: Robert G. Davis, Jr., and Justin S. Davis, both of Bethel, 2 daughters: Deidre D. Sottosanti, of Bethel, and Barbara D. Stuart, of Hyde Park, NY, 2 brothers: Jerrold H. Davis, of Deland, FL, and Hubert A. Davis, of Danbury, 3 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 10, at the Church of St. Mary, Bethel, at 10 am. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel. The family will receive friends at the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, on Friday from 4 through 8 pm.

Marie A. Kilcoyne
Marie A. Kilcoyne, 93, of 57 Barry Avenue, Ridgefield, died on Monday, June 5, 2000, at the Laurelwood Rehabilitation Center, Ridgefield.
Miss Kilcoyne was born in Ridgefield, March 14, 1907, a daughter of the late Luke and Ellen (Nevins) Kilcoyne.
She attended Ridgefield schools and graduated from Ridgefield High School Class of 1925. She then attended Danbury Normal School, which later became the Danbury State Teacher's College and graduated in the Class of 1927.
Miss Kilcoyne became an educator with the Easton, CT, school system, commencing in 1927 until 1934 when she joined the Ridgefield school system. She taught at the Branchville, Center and Veterans Park schools and retired in 1977 after 43 years of service.
She was a member of the National Education Association and the Connecticut Teacher's Association and of St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield.
Miss Kilcoyne enjoyed flowers; flower gardening as well as the education and progress of her students.
Predeceased by her brothers, Luke, James and Thomas as well as a sister, Margaret, she is survived by a cousin, Marie Venus of Ridgefield and her husband Richard "Dick" and their family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 AM in Saint Mary's Church, Ridgefield with the Rev. Robert P. Morrissey, officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.
There will be no calling hours.
