SIRASCUA, Italy -- Carmela (Vinci) Ranno, 90, wife of the Late;
Raymonda Ranno of Sirascua, Italy, formerly of Middletown,
Connecticut, died April 1, 2003 in Siracusa, Sicily, Italy.
She was born May 5, 1912, in Melilli Sicily, daughter of the Late;
Santo and Luia (Gentile) Vinci. Prior to her retirement she had been
employed by A.N. Pierson’s Cromwell for 11 years.
Carmela was a member of Saint Sebastian Roman Catholic Church,
Middletown, Connecticut.
She is survived by two sons; Santino Ranno of Siracusa and Luigi
Ranno of Cromwell, two daughter-in-laws; Concetta Ranno of
Middletown and Lina Ranno of Siracusa, a brother; Vincenzo Vinci of
Portland,six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a son; Giuseppe Ranno
of Midletown, Connecticut.
The Funeral Mass and burial were held in Melilli, Sicily, Italy
A Mass of Remembrance with prayers for the repose soul of Carmela
Ranno will be celebrated Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 7:00 PM in Saint
Sebastian Church, 155 Washington Street, Middletown, Connecticut
with the Reverend Father Daniel Karempelis, M.S.A. as celebrant of
the Mass.

Mrs. Carmel “Carmie” D. Blade
November 28, 1915 – February 17, 2003
Carmel “Carmie” Blade, 87, wife of the Late Rupert Blade, of 240
Stoneycrest Drive, Middletown, Connecticut, died Monday,
February 17, 2003, at the Middlesex Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on November 28, 1915 in Middletown, Connecticut, the
daughter of the Late Salvatore and Rose (Signorelli) Merlo.
Carmel was a dedicated member and communicant of Saint Sebastian
Roman Catholic Church, Middletown, Connecticut. Prior to her retirement
she was employed by Pratt Whitney Aircraft.
She is survived by two sons; Robert and his wife, Easter Monarca Blade, and
David Blade, both of Middletown, Connecticut. A sister; Rose Stanley of
Wallingford, Connecticut. Two Granchildren; Steven Matthew and Marie
Elena Blade of Middletown. Also several Nieces and Nephews. She is
predeceased by two brothers; Anthony and Vincent Merlo, and four sisters;
Santina Coughlin, Anna Pitruzzello, Angela Eckberg, and Margaret
Eckberg.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 21, 2003 at 9:00 AM from
the D’Angelo Funeral Home, 22 South Main Street, Middletown,
Connecticut, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Saint Sebastian
Church, 155 Washington Street, Middletown, Connecticut, with the
Very Reverend Father Thomas J. Derito Smith, V.F., Pastor and Dean of the
Middletown Deanery as celebrant and homilist of the Funeral Mass.
Burial will be in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut,
with Deacon Nicholas J. Cannata officiating.
Relatives and Friends may call at the D’Angelo Funeral Home on Thursday,
February 20, 2003 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

East Hampton – Cesar “Joseph” Sequenzia, 91, husband of Mary (DiProto)
Sequenzia of Bates Road, East Hampton, died Tuesday, October 8, 2002, at
his home following a brief illness.
He was a communicant of Saint Sebastian Church, Middletown.
He was born November 17, 1910 in Middletown, son of the late Sebastian
and Concettina (Belfiore) Sequenzia.
Prior to his retirement he was employed by Hamilton Standard. He was a
Veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a well known area
trombone player and was a member of the Musicians Union Local 499.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Sebastian “Mickey” Sequenzia of
East Hampton; a daughter Constance DiNatale and a granddaughter, Lori
DiNatale.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 11, 2002 at 10:00 AM in the
D’Angelo Funeral Home, 22 South Main Street, Middletown, Connecticut
with the Reverend Father Patrick G. McCorry, Parochial Vicar of Saint
Sebastian Church, Middletown, officiating.
Burial will be in the family plot at Saint Sebastian Cemetery, Middlefield.

Eleanor Granko, 63, of 90 Shunpike Road, Cromwell, Connecticut, died
Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Middlesex Hospital.
She was born December 12, 1939 in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of
the Late; Anthony and Josephine (Manns) Granko.
She was a member of Saint Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, Middletown,
Connecticut.
Eleanor leaves no known survivors, except those who knew her, respected
and loved her.

Middletown, Connecticut on Thursday, March 27, 2003 from 5:00 PM until

Emanuella Carlini, 89, wife of the Late Anthony F. Carlini of 203 Pearle
Street, Middletown, Connecticut, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at the
Walnut Hill Convalescent Center, New Britain, Connecticut.
She was born on November 24, 1926 in Middletown, the daughter of the
Late Rosario and Philomena DiMauro.
Emanuella was a member and communicant of Saint Sebastian Roman
Catholic Church, Middletown. She was also a member of the Saint Theresa’s
Guild of Saint Sebastian Parish and the International Ladies Garment
Workers Union. Prior to her retirement she was employed by Jerome
Garments.
She is survived by two sons; Dr. LeRoy Carlini and Richard L. Carlini, both
of Middletown. A sister; Josephine Ceberek of Middletown and a
Granddaughter; Cara Carlini.
She is predeceased by a brother; Sebastian DiMauro and three sisters;
Connie Abate, Anna Zimmitti, and Angela Andreoni.
Funeral Services and Committal Services for Emmanuella Carlini will be
private at the convenience of the Family.

Reverend Father Harold S. Bartofski, M.S.
Priest of the Missionaries of
Our Lady of La Salette
Hartford, Connecticut
September 17, 1920 – April 12, 2003
Reverend Father Harold S. Bartofski, M.S., 82, of The Missionaries of
Our Lady of La Salette, 85 New Park Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut
died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on September 17, 1920, son of the
Late; William and Elizabeth (Kulikowski) Bartofski.
Father Bartofski attended schools in Hazleton. He was discharged
from U.S. Army in 1940 and entered the La Salette Seminary, Olivet,
IL, in September 1943.
He made first profession of vows as a religious at the La Salette
Novitiate, Olivet on August 5, 1945. He continued studies for the
priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Olivet, IL and was ordained
priest on May 13, 1951, at Saint Mary Cathedral, Peoria, IL.
After ordination he was assigned to the La Salette Mission House,
Milwaukee, WI. In 1952 he was appointed Pastor at Saint Anthony
Parish, Elma, Manitoba, Canada. From 1954 - 1963 he served as
Chaplain, Veterans Hospital, Danville, IL while also teaching at La
Salette Seminary, Olivet, IL. In 1966 he was assigned to parochial
ministry in La Salette Parishes and Missions in Canada, serving in
the Diocese of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and the Archdiocese of Saint
Boniface, Manitoba: Saint John, RedLake; Saint Patrick, Thunder
Bay; Holy Angels, Schreiber; Our Lady, Queen of Poland, Thunder
Bay; Saints Peter & Paul, Ladywood; Sacred Heart of Jesus, Garson.
He retired to the Bishop's House, Winnepeg in 1991, and to the La
Salette House in Hartford in 200l.
Father Bartofski is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April l6,
at 11 a.m. at the La Salette Chapel, 85 New Park Ave., Hartford,
Connecticut.
Calling hours will be prior to the Funeral Mass from 9 a.m. at the La
Salette Community.

Reverend Father James J. Dennis
Priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport
died Saturday, June 7, 2003
Native Son of Norwich, Connecticut
Reverend Father James J. Dennis, "The Priest's Priest", who served
as Pastor of four churches in Fairfield county during his 60+ years as
a Roman Catholic priest, died at the age of 86 at Pope John Paul II
Extended Care Facility on June 7, 2003, following a long illness.
Ordained at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hartford on May 14, 1942,
Father Dennis served as pastor of St. Edward the Confessor Church
in New Fairfield, St. Peter's in Danbury, St. Joseph's in Brookfield and
Sacred Heart in Georgetown. He also served at Holy Rosary in
Bridgeport, St. Francis' in New Haven, St. Clement's in Stamford and
St. Rose's in Newtown.
Father Dennis served as Chairman of the Priest's Council and was on
the Personnel Board of the Diocese of Bridgeport, was a Territorial
Vicar and was Chairman of the Personnel Board of the National
Federation of the Priests Council. He was Chaplain of the Knights of
Columbus.
A deeply spiritual man, Father Dennis was widely respected for his
integrity and intellect, as well as for his understanding and
compassion for those in need. He was a noted homilist and family
counselor.
Following the Vietnam War, he provided resettlement and educational
assistance to Vietnamese refugees.
Born in Norwich, CT to the late James and Mary Dennis, Father
Dennis graduated from Norwich Free Academy, St. Thomas
Seminary in Hartford and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore.
Father Dennis' mother was from the small village of Goleen in the
southernmost part of Ireland, and it was there that Father Dennis
spent many summers and assisted in the local church. After retiring in
1991, Father Dennis lived in New Fairfield and continued to assist at
St. Edward the Confessor Church until he moved to the diocesan
retirement home, "The Catherine Dennis Keefe, Queen of Clergy"
home in Stamford.
He had spent many winters on the West Coast of Florida, savoring
the sea and sunsets.
Father Dennis is survived by his sister, Catherine (Mrs. James) Ryan
of Boca Raton, Florida and by six nieces and nephews. In addition to
his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers: John Dennis,
Tom Dennis and Joe Dennis.
Father Dennis' body will be received at St. Edward the Confessor
Church, New Fairfield on Tuesday, June 10 and will lie in state from 5
to 7 p.m.
There will be a parish Mass at 7 p.m., celebrated by Msgr. Martin P.
Ryan who will also be the homilist, and the eulogy will be given by
father's dear friend, George Keane.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at St.
Edward's at 10:00 by Bishop William Lori and the homilist will be
Father Frank McGrath.
Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Norwich, CT with
the Reverend James F. Kinnane officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to one of Father Dennis'
favorite charities, the Hanahoe Memorial Children's Clinic, 205 main

VERY REVEREND FATHER LEO J. OVIAN, M.S.A.
1925-2003
The Society of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles announces the death
of the Very Reverend Father Leo J. Ovian, M.S.A., on Thursday. January
30, 2003.
Father Ovian was ordained to the priesthood at the Basilica of the National
Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., on February
12, 1966, He was a founding member and first Vicar General of the
Missionaries of the Holy Apostles, a Society founded to foster and form
adults and young adults in their vocation to the priesthood as well as to
other ministries in the Church.
He was the son of Ephraim and Zabelle Ovian and was raised in
Whitinsville, Massachusetts with a brother, Peter Ovian, later killed in
World War II during the Battle of the Bulge; his sister, Angela Ovian
Byrne of Washington, D.C.; and his brother Edward C. Ovian, husband of
Alice Ovian of Whitinsville, Massachusetts.
Father Ovian served in the Arm Air Corps in World War II, and was in
the 486th Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force. He attended Arnold College
in Connecticut and earned a bachelor's and a master's degree at the
University of California in Los Angeles.
After working for seven years as a public school teacher in Groton,
Connecticut, he entered the Roman Catholic Church and became a student
of philosophy in 1959 at what was then Holy Apostles Seminary in
Cromwell, Connecticut. He studied theology at the Catholic University of
America, and earned his doctorate degree in education there.
After his ordination and completion of his doctoral studies in 1966, he was
appointed President and Rector of Holy Apostles Seminary, an
appointment that continued for 22 years.
Under his leadership, the seminary grew not only in faculty and students
but in its outreach to the community. In 1970, the education program was
expanded to provide a balanced education for adult men and women, and
in 1972, the name was officially changed to Holy Apostles College and
Seminary.
Then in 1978, a program of theological studies leading to ordination and a
master's of divinity degree was initiated. In 1979, both the graduate and
undergraduate divisions were accredited by the New England Association
of Schools and Colleges. During his tenure as president and rector, Father
Ovian held strictly to orthodox Catholic doctrine and total obedience to
the Magisterium of the Church. Under his leadership, the college seminary
was rated among the top in the nation. During this period, he also
provided pastoral care to the members of the parish of St. John Church in
Cromwell, Connecticut.
During the fall of 1988, Father Ovian was assigned as local superior to the
Missionaries of the Holy Apostles House of Studies at 1335 Quincy St.,
N.E., Washington, D.C. He attended graduate courses at the Catholic
University of America, functioned as facilitator for the Missionaries of the
Holy Apostles North American Region as representative of their
Unification Commission to study the feasibility of unifying the Missionary
Society of the Holy Apostles with the Society of the Holy Apostles, and
provided pastoral care as spiritual director to the pilgrims who visit the
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

followed by Solemn Mass at 11 a.m. in the Lower Crypt Church of
the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception,
Washington, D.C.
Father Ovian’s body will be received in Cromwell, Connecticut on
Tuesday, February 4, 2003 where he will lie in state at Saint John Church,
5 St. John Court, Cromwell, Connecticut from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Father Ovian will be held on Wednesday,
February 5, 2003 at 10:00 AM in Saint John Church, Cromwell, with the
Very Reverend Raymond Halliwell, M.S.A., Provincial Superior as
Celebrant of the Funeral Mass.
At present, there is no information regarding the internment.
