Rose Marie Di Orio
Rose Marie Di Orio, 83, a resident of Danbury since 1981, died on Friday, December 24, 1999 at her home. Formerly she had lived in the Branchville/Georgetown area for sixty-five years.
Miss Di Orio was born in the Branchville section of Ridgefield on November 25, 1916, a daughter of the late Biagio and Maria DeBenigno Di Orio. She was a graduate of Ridgefield High School and the Danbury Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed for many years at Danbury Hospital, did nursing at local convalescent homes and also private duty nursing.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Georgetown and St. Gregory the Great Church in Danbury; an associate of the Congregation de Notre Dame in Ridgefield; member of L'E9g'E9on of Mary of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys in Brookfield; and a Eucharistic Minister. Miss Di Orio was a pro-life member and a member of the Danbury Hospital Alumnae Association.
Survivors include her two brothers, James V. Di Orio of Ridgefield and Dominic J. Di Orio of Wilton; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, December 29 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown. The Rev. M. Joseph Joaquin, pastor, will officiate. The interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.

John Gowel
John Gowel, age 81, of 35 Brook Street, Ansonia, entered into rest Friday, December 24, 1999 in The Shady Knoll Nursing Center, Seymour after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Jane Pawlak Gowel.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Gowel.
Mr. Gowel was the beloved father of Kathleen Chiaro and her husband, John of Ansonia and is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Gowel of Derby. He is the brother of Joseph Gowel of Seymour. Mr. Gowel is the loving grandfather of John, Kate and David Gowel and Christine Chiaro and Charlene and Michael Zampano. His funeral was Monday.

Dr. Paul R. Brown
Dr. Paul R. Brown of Stuart, Florida, died on December 26, 1999 after a brief illness. Dr. Brown, a retired dentist who was 82, lived previously in Scarsdale, New York and New Milford. He had been a resident of Stuart, Florida since 1989.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry in 1943, Dr. Brown served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1943-1946. Upon being honorably discharged, he moved to Scarsdale, New York where he also set up his dental practice. He later maintained a second home on Candlewood Lake in New Milford. Dr. Brown was active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a scoutmaster for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne; four children, P. Robert Brown of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Anne B. Farrell of Greenwich, William B. Brown of Palos Verdes, California, Jane E. Brown of New York City, and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 1999 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, Hobe Sound.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Walter James Kompass
Walter James Kompass, 90, of 960-B Heritage Village, Southbury, died Sunday, December 26th at Waterbury Hospital. He was the widower of Hilda M. (Kilker) Kompass.
Mr. Kompass was born April 2, 1909, in Jersey City, N.J., son of the late Frederick and Catherine (Fletcher) Kompass.
He retired after 45 years with Western Electric Co. in NYC. He had been a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Nocturnal Adoration Society of St. Patrick's Church in Glen Cove, N.Y. In 1981, he received the Senior Citizen of the Year Award from the town of Oyster Bay, L.I. Formerly of Locust Valley, N.Y., he and his wife moved to Heritage Village in 1983. He performed volunteer work for many community groups, including Meals on Wheels Program, both in Long Island and Southbury. He was an avid exercise enthusiast and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Southbury.
He leaves two sons, Walter J. Kompass of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. and Frederick C. Kompass of Kew Gardens, N.Y.; one daughter, Mary Kompass of New Milford; one brother, Charles Kompass of Amityville, N.Y.; one sister, Wanda Addis of Lyndhurst, N.J. and six grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held Thursday, December 30th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Main Street South, Southbury. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Southbury. Calling hours: Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the daily chapel of the church. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury.

James C. Moulton
James C. Moulton, 54, of Barlow St., Bristol, husband of Mary (Gagnon) Moulton, died Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford.
Born in Northampton, Mass. on November 30, 1945, he was raised in Hadley, Mass. and also resided in Amherst, Mass. and Torrington before moving to Bristol 25 years ago. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, he was a fisheries biologist with the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection for the past 30 years. He was a life member of the American Fisheries Society and served on the Inland Wetlands Commission of the City of Bristol.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Moulton is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mary (Kolasinski) Rytuba and Edward Rytuba of Hadley, Mass.; son, Charles E. Moulton of Bristol; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret R. Moulton West and Thomas West of Avon; brother, Charles Rytuba of Hadley, Mass.; two sisters, Nancy Sams of Hampton, Mass. and Irene Rule of Hadley, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 1999, 11 a.m. at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, with the Rev. Earl Keirstead, pastor of First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Anna Hinz
Anna Hinz died December 25, 1999 at the Danbury Hospital at the age of 71. She was the wife of the late William C. Hinz and lived at 2 Leach Hollow Road in Sherman.
Mrs. Hinz was born in Reichswand, Germany February 19, 1928, daughter of the late Peter and Rosa Herb Stiegler.
She received her education in Germany and came to this country in 1951. She and her husband settled in New Fairfield in 1952 and later in Sherman in 1972. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Sherman. Mrs. Hinz retired as an Inspector/Group Leader in 1989 after 30 years in American Cyanamid in Danbury. She also volunteered at Sacred Heart School in Danbury.
She is survived by her sons, Werner of New Milford and Peter of Gaylordsville; and her daughters, Brigitte I. Donner of San Jose, Calif. and Lori A. Preble of Sherman; 9 grandchildren, Nicole, Kristen and Maria Hinz, Angela Keeler, Matthew and Ashley Hinz and Jaclyn and Rachel and Nicholas Preble and a great-granddaughter, Devin Keeler.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church in Sherman on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Coburn Cemetery.

Nora M. Marion
Nora M. Marion, age 86, resident of the Pope John Paul II Center, Danbury, died Thursday, December 23, 1999 in the Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of the late William Marion.
She was born in Archbald, Penn., December 31, 1912 a daughter of the late Thomas and Bridget (Doran) Barrett. Mrs. Marion was a graduate of Marywood University, Scranton, Penn. She received her master's degree in education at Fordham University.
For over 20 years, she was a special education teacher in the West Babylon, N.Y. school system. Following retirement, she lived at 1925 McGraw Ave. in the Bronx, N.Y.
She is survived by a grandniece, Marie Siefring of Danbury, her goddaughter, Dolores Whamond of Newtown, and several other grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown and at 10 a.m. in the St. Mary's Church, 24 Dodgingtown Road, Bethel for a mass of Christian burial. Interment in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. Friends may call Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Honan Funeral Home.
Hazel Herstein
Hazel Herstein, 86, died Wednesday, December 22 in Palm Beach, Florida. She resided in Palm Beach and Heritage Village, Southbury.
A native of New York City, Mrs. Herstein was born July 1, 1913, daughter of the late Harry and Lillian Gray. She grew up in New York City, but moved to Westport where she resided for over 30 years before moving to Southbury.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Herstein of Heritage Village, Southbury; a son, James Gray and his wife, Karen of Derry, N.H.; a daughter, Kathy H. Weiss and her husband, Dr. Robert F. Weiss of Ridgefield; a son, Richard M. Herstein and his wife, Dahn of Ridgefield; four grandchildren, Lauren and Scott Weiss and David and Kevin Herstein.
Funeral services are private.

Ann Mollico
Ann Mollico, 81, of Sunrise, Fla., mother of Ridgefield resident Nannette A. Kogan, died December 24, 1999 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. after a long illness. She was the wife of the late John Mollico.
Mrs. Mollico was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on June 20, 1918, a daughter of the late Salvatore and Antoinette Amendola. A thirty year employee of Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, L.I., she retired in 1988 as a Corporate Liaison.
A Florida resident for the past three years, Mrs. Mollico was a previous resident of Amityville, Long Island. She was a member of St. Martin of Tours Church in Amityville.
Besides her daughter of Ridgefield, survivors include another daughter, Carol Furino of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Evelyn Gianotti of Long Island, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Gillian and Alexis Kogan, both of Ridgefield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends will be received on Thursday morning after 9:30 a.m. at Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

Grace Altieri-Scutti
Grace Altieri-Scutti, 65, of Lakeside Dr., Venice, Fla., died December 23, 1999 at her home. She was the wife of Dominic Scutti.
Mrs. Scutti was born in the Bronx, N.Y. on May 27, 1934, a daughter of the late Dominick and Ann Maglieri. A former longtime Ridgefield resident, she owned and operated Grace's House of Beauty in Ridgefield.
Moving to Venice 22 years ago, Mrs. Scutti operated Grace's Beauty House and Grace's Carousel Hair Salon, both in North Port, Fla. She was a charter member of the Italian-American Club of Venice, Fla., member of the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in North Port, Fla. and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Mrs. Scutti was predeceased by her first husband, Michael A. Altieri in October of 1974.
Besides her husband, survivors include two sons, Michael Altieri of Venice, Fla. and Donald Altieri of Ridgefield. Four grandchildren also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Florida. A Graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.

Joseph Gabriel
Joseph Gabriel, 89, of Peck Road, Danbury, died at his daughter's residence in Mechanicville, N.Y. on December 25, 1999 of natural causes. He was the husband of Margaret (Nuzzo) Gabriel.
Born in Split Rock, N.Y. on February 5, 1910, he was a son of the late Nicholas and Rose Gabriel and his late stepfather, John Pantanella. He was self-educated.
Mr. Gabriel was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theater.
In the early years of his career, he was employed as a Hatter. Following that he was employed as a Bridge Operator for Vanderbilt Chemical, retiring in 1975 at the age of 65. He also owned and operated a concrete lawn ornament business in Danbury for numerous years.
He had many interests. Mr. Gabriel was an avid boater and gardener. Reading also brought him great pleasure. Joseph's greatest passion was manufacturing and painting concrete lawn ornaments.
Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary in August of 1999.
Besides his wife, Mr. Gabriel is survived by a son, Otto Densk of Danbury; a daughter, Rosemary Cenci of Mechanicville, N.Y.; a sister, Connie Garris of East Syracuse, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Gerald and Ronald Densk and Matthew and Andrea Cenci; and one great-grandson, Jonathan Louis Densk.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward the Confessor Church Wednesday morning at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
