William F. Bodine

William F. Bodine, former Greenwich resident of Whitingham, Vt., passed away peacefully on June 27, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family.

Bodine was born in Philadelphia, Pa. to Cornelius and Dorothy Beckman Bodine. He attended Chestnut Hill Academy, a local country day school in Philadelphia, served as valedictorian and was awarded the Alumni Gold Medal for being the senior who best exemplified the characteristics of leadership, academic excellence, character and service to the school.

He attended Amherst College, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society and graduated cum laude, after which he taught English at The Peddie School, Hightstown, N.J. and housemaster at The Principia, St. Louis, Mo. He spent summers at Northwestern University and earned a master's degree in education. For nine years he worked for The Aluminum Cooking Utensil Company, selling Wear-Ever products door-to-door and as district manager to recruit and train people to sell Cutco Cutlery in rural Wisconsin and Syracuse, N.Y.

The remainder of his life was devoted mainly to teaching English and mathematics to junior high students in Greenwich, supplementing his income by work at summer camps and selling Pitney Bowes mailing products and World Book Encyclopedias direct to the consumer.

He and his wife, Margie Medlin, adopted three boys, who attended schools mainly in Syracuse, N.Y., Chapman Falls, Ohio and Darien and Greenwich. After retirement in 1979, he and his wife moved from Greenwich to Lake Placid, Fla., and spent six months of each year in their home in Newfane, Vt. until Medlin's death in 1988. He later married private piano teacher. Dorothy Morrow, and lived year round for ten years in Newfane, Vt. After Morrow's death in 1999, he married Sylvia Kingsley of Whitingham, Vt., and resided in Whitingham until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Bodine of Whitingham; three sons: Roger Bodine of Merrillville, Ind., Timothy Bodine of Billings, Minn., and James and his wife, Karen Bodine of Bridgeport; two stepdaughters, Sandra Kingsley and Connie Burton; two step-sons, Lee Kingsley and his wife, Deb and Warren Kingsley and his wife, Tina; his brother-in-law, Ken Werner of Langhorne, Pa.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Barbara and Eleanor; his brother, Cornelius; his stepson, Cleon Kingsley; and his stepdaughter, Nancy K. Smith.

Memorial services for Bodine will be held at a future date.

Steve Crabtree

Steve Crabtree, 60, of Cos Cob, passed away on June 28, 2010.

He was born July 9, 1949 and was the son of Gordon Crabtree and the late Meredith Scattergood Crabtree.

Crabtree grew up in Cranston, R.I. then moved to Bryn Mawr, Pa. before coming to Cos Cob. He graduated from Greenwich High School in 1967. He worked in the moving and storage business for many years. He was also an avid sports buff and loved to fish, especially in Key West, Fla.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Beverly; his three sons: Alan, Jared and Brett; his brother, Thomas; and his twin sister, Susan Franco-Velez. Two granddaughters, nieces and nephews and one grandniece, also survive him. His mother, Meredith; his brother, Charles; and his nephew, Christopher Franco-Velez, predeceased him.

A memorial service was held on July 2 at the Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Save the Sound, 142 Temple St., New Haven, CT 06510 or to a charity of one's choice.

Mary Loforese

Mary Loforese, 90, of Greenwich died on July 1, 2010.

Loforese was born on Oct. 14, 1919 in Hastings on Hudson, N.Y. to Gabriel and Stephanie Rakotz.

She is survived by her son, John T. Loforese and his wife, Debby; her two step grandchildren, Kelly O'Brien and Dennis O'Brien, Jr.; her sister, Helen Rakotz; and her brothers, Alex Rakotz and John Rakotz. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Loforese; and her sisters, Ann Kissel and Sophie Karschmidt.

Funeral services were held on July 6 at the Castiglione Funeral Home. Internment followed in St. Mary cemetery in Greenwich.

Gratia Saylor Merrill

Gratia Saylor Merrill, 95, died peacefully at her home of 23 years in Riverside on June 29, 2010.

She was born on March 11, 1915 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was the daughter of Samuel E. and Helen A. Saylor.

She graduated from Erasmus Hall H.S. in Brooklyn, and was a graduate of the Class of `37, Smith College in Northampton, Mass. She was predeceased by her husband, Whitney after 25 years of marriage. The couple lived for most of their marriage in Old Greenwich, where she was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Riverside. In the early 60's, Merrill's family moved to Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., where she was the administrative assistant to the superintendent and treasurer of the Cold Spring Harbor School District for 25 years.

After her retirement in 1987, she enjoyed wintering in Holmes Beach, Fla., summering in Meredith, N.H. and residing the remainder of the year in Riverside. She volunteered for several years for Meals On Wheels in both Greenwich and Bradenton, Fl.

Merrill traveled worldwide with her sisters in-law and enjoyed playing bridge and golf well into her 90s.

She is survived by her four children: Whitney of Riverside, James E. of Sterling,

Va., Gratia S. of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Geoffrey G. of Dover, Mass. She also is survived by seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Her family would like to give special thanks to the Merrill's care givers during the last few years of her life, to the Greenwich Hospital Hospice team of nurses and caregivers, and to Greenwich EMS and Dr. Joel Blumberg and staff who always addressed her needs in a compassionate way.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Sunday, July 11 at St Paul's Episcopal Church, Riverside. Burial will be private.

Jack D. Paladino Jr.

Jack D. Paladino Jr., 73, longtime Greenwich resident, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenwich surrounded by his family on June 21, 2010.

Born on April 12, 1937, he was the son of Jack D. Paladino, Sr. and Anna Peterson Paladino of Rye, N.Y. Paladino graduated from Rye High School and served in the Army at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga.

He lived in Greenwich for 46 years and was a former employee of Union Trust Bank and Greenwich Automotive Services until his retirement in 2001. He was an avid golfer, gardener and member of The Lyon's Club of Western Greenwich as well as St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Greenwich.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Reynolds Paladino; his two children, Rebecca Lynn Paladino Gleason of Greenwich, and Jack Scott Paladino and his wife Maria Paladino of Cashtown, Pa.; a grandchild, Mitchell Reynolds Gleason of Greenwich, and a cousin, Jessie Straface of Port Chester, N.Y.

A private memorial was held on June 22 at Cognetta Funeral Home in Stamford.

William J. Pechar

William J. Pechar, 97, World War II veteran and a longtime Riverside resident most recently of Southport, passed away on July 4, 2010 at Connecticut Health of Southport.

He was born on June 15, 1913 in New York City to Joseph and Anna Pechar.

Pechar was a pension plan director for Schenley Industries for many years before retiring in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He is survived by his two daughters, Nancy Toombs of New York, N.Y. and Susan Pechar and her husband D. Hugh Anderson of Fairfield. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Gabris Pechar.

All services are private at the request of the family. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902, is handling the arrangements.

Herman Karl Pieck

Herman Karl Pieck, 71, owner of Excelsior Industries for more than 40 years, has died.

He was born on March 6, 1939 in New York, N.Y. to Edward Pieck and Mathilde Pieck He was married to Roberta Lewis in 1987.

He is survived by his mother, Mathilde Pieck and one brother, Eric Pieck and his wife, Roberta, all of Connecticut; one son, Steven Pieck of New York; a daughter, Amanda Pieck of N.Y.; two stepsons, Gregory Ferguson of New Jersey, Derek Ferguson of Connecticut; and one stepdaughter, Robbin Ferguson of Connecticut. He also leaves six grandchildren: Lauren, Whitney, R.J., Maya, Peri Eliza, Dylan and a host of nieces and nephews.

A service was held on June 26 at the First Lutheran Church of Greenwich. Arrangements were entrusted to Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, Greenwich.
