Lawrence Schmidt Jr.

Lawrence Schmidt Jr., 56, owner of Greenwich Pool Service for 25 years, passed away on Feb. 23, 2010, at the Stamford Hospital.

He was born in Queens, N.Y. to Ruth and Lawrence Schmidt on July 2, 1953 and lived in Stamford before moving to Greenwich 25 years ago.

He graduated from the St. Cecilia School and Stamford High School, where he was the All State Football pick for the 1971 team. He graduated from Gavilan Jr. College and was on the All American Jr. College Football Team.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Loughran Schmidt and two sons, Kevin and Kyle; his parents; a brother, Kenneth; his sisters, Karen, Gerrie, Mary, Ellen and Barbara; and his dog, Chelsea.

He was predeceased by his sister, Kathleen Ruszkowski and grandparents, Ruth and Frank Taylor and Gertrude and Julius Schmidt.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Feb. 27 at the Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Stamford. Interment followed at Queen of Peace cemetery in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the: Send a Kid Fishing Foundation, 14 Ramsey Road, Shirley, NY 11967 or, to the American Lighthouse Foundation, PO Box 565, Rockland, ME 04841.

Antoinette Utlek

Antoinette Utlek, 86, of Greenwich died on Feb. 18, 2010 at Greenwich Hospital.

She was born in Glen Cove, N.Y. on July 10, 1923 to Raffaele and Maddalena Nuzzo. Utlek was a graduated valedictorain from the American Institute of Banking. She worked for many years in Banking at Port Chester-Rye Savings and later for Greater New York Savings Bank in their Port Chester Branch.

Utlek was a member of the Port Chester Banking Association. She married Sigmund Utlek in St. Rocco's Church in Glen Cove. on Dec. 7, 1947. He predeceased her in 1983.

Utlek is survived by two daughters, Diane L. Boaz and Lynn Utlek Scott Cummins.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on March 1 at St. Mary's Church, 178 Greenwich Ave. Greenwich. Interment will follow in St.. Mary's Cemetery.

Robert G. Sur

Robert G. Sur, 78, an Old Greenwich resident for 20 years, died June 15, 2010 in Alpharetta, Ga.

Sur attended Toledo Central Catholic high school and graduated from Villanova University in 1954. After serving as a U.S. Navy officer for three years, he returned to Villanova and graduated from the School of Law in 1960.

A practicing attorney, he became a member of the bar in Pennsylvania and Connecticut and was certified to practice before the Supreme Court of the U.S., U.S. Court of Appeals-3rd Circuit and various judicial venues in Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

In the mid-1960s, he embarked upon a successful business career, first as house counsel for Heede International, Inc., where he rose to executive vice president of that company with overlapping responsibilities for Raise Mining and Drilling Ltd., Sandy K Mines Ltd., and Heede, Inc.

Sur then became executive vice president (and partner) in the conglomerate, Garret, Inc. In the 1980s, he founded New England N-Viro, a distribution company for environmental chemicals which he built and then sold in 1992. Subsequently, he served as an environmental consultant principally for Hydropress, Inc.

Throughout his life he made many lasting friendships across the country, with whom he stayed in frequent touch. After his retirement, he moved from Old Greenwich to Alpharetta, Ga. to be near his very good friends, Hans-Olaf Lofstrand and his wife, Maine. He joined Berkeley Hill Country Club and continued to provide pro bono legal services to those in need.

He is survived by his two sons, Kenneth and wife, Laura of Monroe, NC and Brian of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Nikki Farlow and Jessica Sur of Monroe, N.C. and two brothers, Richard and his wife, Catherine of Concord, Mass. and William and his wife Margaret of Bel Air, Md. as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the near future.

In memoriam, donations may be made to the Emory Johns Creek Hospital or St. Benedict's Catholic Church, both of Alpharetta, GA.

Jennie Ulicky

Jennie Ulicky, 94, wife of the late George Ulicky and a longtime Greenwich resident, died on June 23, 2010 at Danbury Hospital.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeannette Samelwich; a grandson, Robert Samelwich; a granddaughter, Laurie Biasetti and her husband, Gil; and four great- grandchildren: Anthony, Rachel, Nicholas and Dominick Biasetti, all of Brookfield. She is also survived by two sisters, Stephaine Richen of Riverside and Ceilia Tyburski of Greenwich; two nieces, Marybeth Breese of Ohio and Kathy Tyburski of Greenwich; and three nephews: William and Michael Kalinski of Greenwich and Peter Kalinski of Virgina.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Frank Tyburski and a sister, Mary Kalinski.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on June 28 at Sacred Heart Parish in Greenwich. Burial followed at St. Mary cemetery in Greenwich.

Bertha Mary Popp

Bertha Mary Popp, 80, died Nov. 2, at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Norwalk Dec. 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Mary McGuinness Popp and has lived in Norwalk all of her life. She had worked for the Hat Corporation of America and retired from Trudy Toys in Norwalk from the accounts receivable department. She enjoyed traveling and was a dedicated member of St. Matthew Church.

Survivors include a brother, John E. Popp and his wife Frances of Ansonia, two nephews and a niece. She was also predeceased by her brother Francis J. Popp.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Church. The Magner Funeral Home in Norwalk, is handling arrangements.

Irene Wargo Sheridan

Irene Wargo Sheridan, 92 of Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, Penn., formerly of Wilton, died Nov.7 at The Glen at Willow Valley from natural causes.

Born in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Elizabeth Szampias Wargo and the wife of the late Charles Sheridan, Sr., who died in 1991.

Sheridan graduated from Norwalk High School. She was employed as a bookkeeper.

She is survived by two sons: Charles Sheridan, Jr. of New Fairfield, Stephen Jack Sheridan of Canterbury; two granddaughters, Laura Sheridan Murphy of Bayside, N.Y. and Jennifer Sheridan of Lebanon, Penn.; a brother Joseph Wargo of Lancaster, Penn.; two sisters: Elizabeth Mayer and Marjorie Rysz both of Norwalk. One brother Stephen Wargo and one sister the later Dorothy Magyar have predeceased her.

Donations can be made to a charity in lieu of flowers.

John Patrick Walsh

John Patrick Walsh, 86, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at Norwalk Hospital, Nov. 7. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of Mary Ellen Lynch and Patrick Walsh. He was a resident of the North end of Bridgeport until his beloved wife, of 53 years, Virginia Marie Wagner Walsh, passed in 2005. He then moved to Norwalk to live with his daughter and son --in-law, Virginia and Lawrence Kaczmarek.

He is loved and survived by his daughters Virginia and her husband Lawrence Kaczmarek of Norwalk, and Patricia L. Walsh of Sarasota Fla., and his grandchildren Ian Michael Ochman of Derby, Lindsay Ochman and Lauren Richards and her husband Christopher all residing in Norwalk.

In addition to his wife he was predeceased by his sister and brother in law Mary and Peter Lubin. He will also be missed by his furry friends, Juneau, Roxy, Mr. Man, Boo and Butterscotch. His children and grandchildren remember him most for his patience, optimism and willingness to inspire and support them in achieving their dreams and goals in life. He was a registered professional engineer specializing in Metallurgy, graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY). Over the course of his life he worked as a metallurgist, manager and consultant with Sikorsky Aircraft and Norden (both divisions of United Technologies), Remington Arms, Bridgeport Lycoming-Division of Avco and other manufacturing companies. He was an instructor and lecturer in calculus, advanced mathematics and engineering, at University of Bridgeport and Bridgeport Engineering Institute (a department of Fairfield University). He was instrumental in delivering a fully accredited engineering department to Fairfield University. In his professional life he was accomplished in oral and written communications, organizational planning and human relations. He was a dedicated and loving father and husband. Active in his children's education as a member of the Diocese of Bridgeport Board of Education, treasurer of the Home School Association and was his girl's softball team coach. He was an avid sports fan and enthusiastic supporter of the UConn Women's Basketball Team "Go Huskies" and a Yankee fan until the end. He passed his love of learning to his daughters and grandchildren who looked to him always as a wise role model and mentor, always ready to answer a question or give advice. To his last days he never lost his intellectual curiosity or his `gift of gab'. He was active in his community as a member of the Knights of Columbus and the United Fund of Eastern Fairfield County. He was a devoted husband who never waivered in his ability to provide for his wife and family and consistently expressed his love for them. In his wife's last years he was a tender and loving caregiver. No matter where he went he always made friends. His ability to converse with total strangers who he saw as `friends he just hadn't met yet', made him loved everywhere he went.
