Norair Hartunian

Norair Hartunian of Riverside, 90, a certified public accountant and Riverside resident, died on June 9, 2010 at home.

He was born to Garabed and Mariam Hartunian and grew up in Washington, D.C., then lived in Queens, N.Y. for many years before moving to Riverside in 1960 with his family. He was the controller of a division of American Machine and Foundry, then became vice president, controller, treasurer and a member of the board of directors of the U.S. division of Alfred Dunhill of London, Inc. before retiring in 1984.

Surviving are his wife, Vera: four children: Linda Hartunian of Darien, Diane Yazujian and her husband Greg of Towamencin, Pa., Barry Hartunian of Boston, Mass. and Wayne and his wife Monique Hartunian of Darien; and six grandchildren: Taleen Josefsson, Ara Josefsson, Michael Yazujian, Brenda Yazujian, Nicholas Hartunian and Melissa Hartunian. He was predeceased by his brother Hrair Hartunian.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on June 12 at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church in White Plains. Cremation will be private.

Patricia Kopenhaver

Dr. Patricia Kopenhaver, a Greenwich resident and podiatrist, passed away after a long illness at Greenwich Hospital on June 13, 2010.

Kopenhaver was born in New York City on Aug. 18, 1920, and traveled the world extensively. She received a bachelor's degree from George Washington University and a master's degree from Columbia University.

After graduation from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, she set up practice in Greenwich. In all of her endeavors, her family said, Kopenhaver provided a sense of humor and a spice for life.

Kopenhaver was founding president of the American Association for Women Podiatrists, which she charged in 1971 and became affiliated with the American Podiatrist Medical Association.

She received an alumni award of distinction from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and had a scholarship named in her honor.

Kopenhaver enjoyed flying, traveling, dancing; opera, music and theatre.

She is survived by her sister, Jean, and a brother, Matthew and his wife Helen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Roman Catholic funeral service will be held today at St. Mary Church at 10 a.m. Internment will be private.

Family and friends may make donations to New York College of Podiatric Medicine in her memory.

Edward E. Martin

Edward E. Martin, 93 formerly of Greenwich and New Lisbon, N.Y., passed away June 4, 2010 at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born in 1916 in Greenwich, England to Floyd and Evelyn Martin. He married Margaret "Peg" Kelly in 1941 in Greenwich.

He retired from Town Hall Radio & Television in Greenwich after 35 years.

Martin is survived by his two daughters, Lynn Kelly of Groton and Nancy Martin-Mathewson and her husband Art of New Lisbon; and his grandchildren, Owen Mathewson of New Lisbon, Shannon Kelly and Jake Blair of Marlborough, Mass., and Julia Nadeau and husband Brian of Warwick, R.I.

He is also survived by a brother, Howard Martin, and his wife Joanne of Newport Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Peg, his brother Paul and son-in-law Bob Kelly.

Entombment will take place in St. Mary's Garden Mausoleum in Greenwich, at 1 p.m. on July 24.

Norma Randy Nelson

Norma Randy Nelson, 79, a resident of Old Greenwich for more than 45 years, died on June 7, 2010 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

Nelson was born and raised in Bloomfield, N.J. to Ralph and Irma Miele. She graduated from Northwestern University in 1953 and worked in New York City in the fashion and publishing industries.

In 1956, she married Pieter P. deKadt and they settled in Old Greenwich to raise three children. An active member of the community, Nelson was president of the Old Greenwich Riverside Community Center and served on the boards of the Greenwich YWCA and the Greenwich Women's Club. In 1975, she received the Environ Beautification Award in Old Greenwich.

Nelson returned to school in 1970 to earn a master's degree in counseling from the University of Bridgeport, then underwent extensive training in pastoral and psychotherapy counseling. She began the practice of psychotherapy in Old Greenwich in 1980. In 1982, Nelson and her husband were divorced.

In 1985, she married Ron Nelson. In addition to her psychotherapy practice, Nelson also was a parenting teacher and coach. She conducted parenting workshops and programs in schools throughout Fairfield County and was a founding board member of Greenwich Parents Together.

In 1993, she co-founded the Kripalu Consultants Collaborative, an organization of professional business consultants dedicated to bringing spirit to the workplace, which still thrives today.

Nelson was a student of various spiritual traditions and a student and teacher of A Course in Miracles. She was also an accomplished artist and enthusiastic skier and tennis player, her family said.

She is survived by her husband Ron; three children: Sharon de Kadt of Woodbridge, David de Kadt of New York City, and John de Kadt of Lee, Mass.; a son-in-law, Chris Keevil; and by her two grandchildren, Abby Keevil and Brynn Keevil.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow to celebrate her life at 11 am in The First Congregational Church of Greenwich, 108 Sound Beach Ave., in Old Greenwich.

Sophie Sobeski Roman

Sophie Sobeski Roman, 89, a longtime Greenwich resident, died on May 19, 2010 of complications from osteoporosis.

Although she was born in Port Chester, N.Y. on June 23, 1920, Roman considered herself a Greenwich native, her family said. She entered New Lebanon Elementary School in Greenwich in 1925 and graduated from Greenwich High School with a business diploma in 1938.

After working briefly as an administrative assistant at Drinkwater's Moving and Storage Company in Greenwich, Roman began a nine-year career at Union Carbide Corporation in New York City, where she worked as a stenographer on a confidential project.

On Aug. 6, 1945, she learned along with other Union Carbide employees that they had contributed to the Manhattan Project, which developed the first atomic bomb that ended the war between the U.S. and Japan.

On Oct. 2, 1948, Sobeski married Edward J. Roman of New York in Sacred Heart Church in Greenwich. Their son, James Edward Roman, was born in 1952 and their daughter, Patricia Ann Roman, was born in 1956. Roman returned to the workforce as the Secretary at Glenville School from 1967 through 1975. After her husband died tragically in Iran in 1976, Roman continued her career at the Greenwich Board of Education until her retirement in 1985. In her retirement years, she moved to Virginia and Nevada to remain close to her family.

In addition to her two children, Roman is survived by grandsons Matthew James Scarpace of Morgantown, West Virginia, David Michael Scarpace of Las Vegas, N.V. and a granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth Scarpace, also of Las Vegas; one sister, Winifred Skibinski of Stamford, one brother Joseph Sobeski of Greenwich; a sister-in-law, Helen Cooper of Boynton Beach, Florida; a son-in-law, James Scarpace of Las Vegas; and six nieces and four nephews.

All are invited to a memorial service at Sacred Heart Church, 95 Henry Street in Greenwich at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010. Interment at St. Mary cemetery will be private.

JAY R. FLAXMAN

Jay R. Flaxman, 80, of Bridgeport, died suddenly on Jan. 11, 2010.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on March 27, 1929, he was a family man who was most happy when surrounded by those he loved, and they returned his love in full measure.

He was a veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked for The Record Hunter In New York City and later opened and managed The Record Hunter in Westport. He took great pleasure in serving the citizens of Westport and enjoyed guiding them in making their selections. Flaxman called on his vast knowledge of classical, pop and folk music to help them make good choices. He created a welcoming environment in the store and was generous to young and old who visited him for advice and companionship.

He was later employed by the Westport Transit District and once again enjoyed the comradery of Westport. He loved Compo Beach, bike riding, family campouts, folk dancing and working out at the Westport Weston Family Y.

He is survived by his children, David Flaxman, Jennifer Lividini, Paul Flaxman and Rachael Flaxman; and his "other" children, Marion, Joey, Jen, Todd and Krista; his grandchildren, Chris, Amy, Nicole, Joseph, Trevor, Emma, Eva and Jacob; and three great-grandchildren, Colby, Conner and Carter. He is also survived by Anne Flaxman, his ex-wife and best friend; his sister, Frances Wetzstein; a niece, Wendy Gemelle; a nephew, Roger Gemelle; and his cousin, Barbara Macieski.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Spear-Miller Funeral Home of Fairfield.
