Phoebe Knapp Knowles

Phoebe Knapp Knowles, 93, former Greenwich resident of South Londonderry, Vt., passed away peacefully on April 5, 2010 in Manchester Center, Vt.

She was raised in Greenwich and lived there many years before moving to South Londonderry in 1972.

Knowles was a graduate of Rosemary Hall and was serving on its board of trustees when it merged with the Choate School.

She is survived by her husband, James Burbank Knowles of Manchester Center; her two daughters, The Reverend Marnie K. Keator of South Londonderry and Nancy B. Knowles of Antrim, N.H.; a son, James B. Knowles Jr. of Stamford; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles W. Knapp of Manchester Center. She was predeceased by a daughter, Phoebe Baker Knowles and a son, John Ellis Knowles II.

A celebration of her life will take place on July 3 in South Londonderry. Memorial contributions will be welcomed in her memory to the charity of one's choice.

Angelina Laversa Labella

Angelina Laversa Labella, 80, longtime Greenwich resident more recently of Fairfield, died of natural causes in Fairfield on April 4, 2010.

LaBella, a Greenwich resident for 78 years, was born on March 18, 1930 to Concetta and Anthony LaVersa in New York City and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1948.

She was the co- founder of Auto Electric, Inc. of Mamaroneck, N.Y. along with her late husband Michael. She and her husband owned and operated this auto parts warehouse successfully for 30 years.

LaBella was a parishioner at St. Paul's Church in Glenville since 1973 and served the church in various capacities as a volunteer.

She is survived by her brother, Vincent LaVersa of Darien and her sister, Santa Marko of Greenwich; and her son and daughter -in-law, Deborah and Anthony LaBella of Fairfield with whom she had lived over the past two years.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Church on April 7. Burial followed at St. Mary's cemetery in Rye Brook, N.Y.

Stanley Layton

Stanley Layton, a U.S. Army veteran and international marketing advisor of Greenwich, passed away on March 27, 2010 at Greenwich Hospital.

He was born in Manhattan to Martha and Murray Layton of New York.

After graduating from New York University, he joined the U.S. Army on a Diplomatic Corps in Europe.

He met his wife, Ingrid in Germany, and they settled in Greenwich 27 years ago.

He is also survived by six sons: Oliver, Lloyd, Jeffrey, Peter, Alexander and David. His brother, Kenneth, predeceased him.

A funeral service was held privately.

Contributions in Layton's memory may be made to the American Cancer Association.

May M. Metcalf

May M. Metcalf, 95, of Greenwich and Nantucket, Mass., passed away on March 29, 2010 at Greenwich Hospital.

She was born in Patterson, N.J. to John and Anne Foy Matthews on Nov. 25, 1914.

Metcalf was both a teacher and lab technician before becoming a wife and mother. She raised her family of five children in Englewood, N.J. before moving to Greenwich.

During the past two decades, she was an active lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Michael's Church in Greenwich. She was also a member of Indian Harbor Yacht Club and the Nantucket Garden Club.

Metcalf is survived by three sons: Michael Edward Seidel and his wife, Margaret, John F. Seidel and Frederick James Seidel and his wife, Mary; and a daughter, Christine Seidel Thompson and her husband, Roy.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Paul Seidel and his wife, Charlene, Loretta Seidel, Louisa Pregerson and her husband, Jonah, Trevor Thompson, David Seidel and Merina Seidel, Ashley Potvin and her husband, Tom, Walter Seidel, and James Seidel; two great-grandchildren, Troy Seidel, Cecily and Julius Pregerson; and two stepchildren, Susan Lancaster and Nicholas Metcalf. Metcalf was predeceased by her husband, Reginald Frederick Seidel; her second husband, Henry Kenneth Metcalf; a son, Reginald Frederick Seidel, Jr.; a sister, Catherine Elizabeth Gallagher; and a step-daughter, Patricia McMahon.

A service of Christian burial was held on April 2 at St. Michael's Church in Greenwich. On April 5, A Mass of Christian burial took place at St. Mary's Church in Nantucket. Interment followed in St. Mary cemetery in Nantucket.

John Morus

John Morus, 72, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed away on March 29, 2010 surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rosemary; two daughters, Mary Ann Sency and her husband Alex of Shelton and Beverly Morus of Lakeland Fla.; a sister, Delores of Ft. Lauderdale Fla. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, George Morus and Robert Morus.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

George M. Muto Sr.

George M. Muto Sr., 75, a Greenwich resident, passed away on March 29, 2010 surrounded by his family.

He was born on April 7, 1934 to Joseph and Angela DiBenedetto Muto and played varsity baseball at New Rochelle High School and the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He also played semi-professional baseball with the Harlan Kentucky Mountain League, a farm team for the Washington Senators.

Following his retirement from his electrical contracting business, he joined his wife's real estate brokerage firm, Sound Shore Realty, and together they sold homes from New York to Greenwich.

It was his career as a professional singer, however, that brought both him and his listeners great joy, his family said, and he performed with big bands and his own band throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

He also created and conducted the folk music ministry at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port Chester, N.Y. for more than 10 years, and began and lead the folk music choir at Holy Rosary Church.

Muto was also a religious education teacher for hundreds of students at Our Lady of Mercy and Holy Rosary Church.

He was very actively dedicated to pro-life causes and co-chaired and co-organized the weekly pro- life chain for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jenny Patafio Muto; and six children: Jennifer Boccarossa and her husband Carmine; Teresa Stagg and her husband Tom; Gina Edwards and her husband Tom; George Muto Jr. and his wife Wendy; Angela Muto and her partner Ken Forman; and Maria Waterman and her husband Bill. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: David Muto, Sarah and Nicholas Stagg, Katie, Allison and Kristen Edwards and Michael and Emily Boccarossa. He is also surived by his two brothers, Sam Buffardi and Ronald Buffardi; and a sister, Barbara Buffardi Sinopoli.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at Holy Rosary Church on April 6. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, Rye Brook, N.Y.
