SUZANNE C. HYLAN

Suzanne C. Hylan, 62, of Fairfield, wife of Jonathan J. Hylan, died Nov. 4, 2009, at Stamford Hospital.

Born in Meyersdale, Pa., the daughter of Lois Commons and the late John Commons, she had been a Fairfield resident for the last 33 years.

Prior to raising her family, she worked for Trans World Airlines as both a flight attendant and in tour sales. She also worked for Executrans as a relocation counselor.

After raising two children, she joined Barnes & Nobel as a bookseller and later worked as a dental assistant for Fairfield Orthodontic Associates.

A long-time active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Altar Guild and volunteered as a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors, in addition to her husband and mother, include a daughter, Brett C. Hylan of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport; a son, Matthew H. Hylan of Fairfield; and three nephews.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a sister, Jacqueline Commons.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Road, Fairfield. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bennett Cancer Center, 30 Shelburne Road, Stamford, CT 06904.

The Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield, is assisting the family with arrangements.

JOHN JOSEPH SHEEHAN JR.

John Joseph Sheehan Jr. (Jack), 79, of Fairfield, husband of 49 years of Catherine M. Sheehan, died Nov. 9, 2009, in his home.

Born in Stamford, the son of the late John J. and Jane Sheehan, he had been a Stamford resident for most of his life prior to moving to Fairfield 10 years ago. Sheehan served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a self-employed carpenter, and was a parishioner of St. Pius X Church in Fairfield.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife, include six children, Jack Sheehan of Fairfield, Gerard Sheehan and his wife, Felita, of Bethel, Daniel Sheehan of Ruskin, Fla., Mary Kate Sheehan of Fairfield, Stephen Sheehan and his wife, Kristine, of Trumbull, and Shannon Boldrighini and her husband, Richard, of Fairfield; nine grandchildren, Meghan, Erin, Colleen, Kevin, Jane, Jack, Luke, Charlie and Samantha; a sister, Mary Ann Sarles of West Chester, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call today, Nov. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, at St. Pius X Church, 834 Brookside Drive, Fairfield. Interment will be private in St. John's Cemetery, Darien.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 279 New Britain Road, Suite 5, Kensington, CT 06037.

Florence McFarland Stewart

Florence McFarland Stewart, 94, of Cos Cob passed away peacefully on March 2, 2010.

She was born on July 22, 1915. Stewart enjoyed baking, gardening, and especially visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Stewart and his wife Margaret of Trumbull and William and his wife Deborah of Sonoma, Calif; nine grandchilden: Jeff Addison of Ellicott City, Md., Craig and Scott Addison of Stamford, John Stewart of Wilmington, Vt., Susan Stewart of Fairhaven, Mass., Casey and Paul Stewart of Sonoma, Calif., Brian Stewart of Monroe, and Kevin Stewart of Trumbull; eight great-grandchildren: Tom, Meridith, Skyler, Brycen and Cara Addison, and Braden, Kylie Rose and Mason Stewart. Stewart was predeceased by her husband John, a son, John Stewart, and a daughter, Joan Stewart Addison

A burial service was held on March 6 at Putnam cemetery in Greenwich.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Disease & Related Disorders Assn. Fairfield Co. Chapter, 10 Wall Street, Norwalk, CT 06850 would be appreciated. The Stewart family extends their thanks to the staff at Middlebrook Farms, Trumbull and Lord Chamberlain Nursing Center, Stratford.

Robert C. Wilson

Robert C. Wilson, 64, a Greenwich High School teacher for eleven years and resident of Norwalk for over thirty years, died on Oct. 24, 2009 in his home.

He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1945 and graduated from Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY. He received a bachelor`s degree in English from The Catholic University of America and an M.A.T., a non-thesis degree, in English from Wesleyan University. He also did graduate studies at Fordham, Fairfield, and Oxford universities.

Wilson began his career in 1969 at Xavier High School in Middletown, where he taught for five years. He went on to teach in the Brookfield public schools for 18 years, where he also served as department chairman as well as the district curriculum and staff development specialist for English.

He then taught at Greenwich High School for eleven years, where he was also the program administrator for English. For more than 20 years he was a consultant and a workshop presenter with the Connecticut Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, a teacher-training initiative.

He was also one of its associate directors and an adjunct professor in English and Education at Fairfield University.

Over the years he held leadership positions in local, state, and national organizations. He was active in the community as a past chairman of the Rowayton Civic Association, a past chairman of the St. John Church Parish Council, and a current board member and vice-president of the English-Speaking Union`s Greenwich branch.

He also served as an ambulance driver with the former Rowayton Emergency Medical Services.

Professionally, he was a past president of the Connecticut Council of Teachers of English and was an elected board member of the Council on English Leadership of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Wilson enjoyed international travel and had friends around the world. Some of his other interests included photography and genealogy.

He retired in June 2006 after thirty-seven years as an educator.

Wilson is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Sarah "Sally" of Rowayton; his daughter Rebecca of Greenwich; and two sons, Brendan of San Francisco and Timothy and his wife Angela of Rowayton.

He is also survived by his brother, William Wilson and his family of Staten Island, N.Y. as well as two sisters: Sr. Patricia Wilson, SC, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Kathleen Buxton and her family of Toms River, N.J. He also leaves many friends and colleagues, especially his companion Hajime Ogawa.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Oct. 28 at Saint John Parish Church in Darien. Interment followed in Riverside cemetery in Norwalk.

HAZEL M. (SHER) SCHWARTZ

Hazel M. (Sher) Schwartz of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly of Framingham, Mass., died Jan. 23, 2010. She was 74 years old.

Schwartz served as the principal and a teacher at the Temple Beth Am Religious School in Framingham, Mass., for many years. She was an active, lifetime member of Hadassah and the Brandeis University National Women's Committee. She had a long-time involvement, both personally and professionally, with real estate.

She is survived by her husband, Sidney Schwartz; and her children, Howard Schwartz and his wife, Wendy of Framingham, Mass., David Schwartz and his wife, Jennifer of Santa Monica, Calif., and Nancy Friedlander of Weston. She was the grandmother of Eric Schwartz, Alexandra Schwartz, Alana Friedlander and Bari-Lynn Friedlander; and the sister of Esther Preiss of Florida, Lewis Sher of New York and the late David Sher and Beatrice Rodman.

Funeral services took place Jan. 26 in Framingham, Mass., and memorial observance was held at the home of Howard and Wendy Schwartz through the evening of Jan 28.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place W., 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Levine Chapels in Brookline, Mass.

GENEVIEVE MARIE NICHOLS STONE

Genevieve Marie Nichols "Nikki" Stone, 99, of Westport, died Dec. 28, 2009.

The youngest of five children, she was raised in New Canaan and attended Normal School in Stamford, where she graduated with honors and was the salutatorian of her class. She received her bachelor's degree from The Teachers College of Connecticut (now named Central Connecticut College) in 1934. She then taught at Center School in New Canaan until her retirement 50 years later. Many students still remember her fondly as their first grade teacher.

In 1938, she was married to William "Bill" E. Stone, past vice president of The Westport Bank and Trust, who predeceased her in 1980. An avid bridge player, Stone was active in the Westport, Weston and Norwalk senior centers. She will be remembered as a loving wife, caring teacher and compassionate friend.

A memorial service will be held in the spring, at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, Westport; date and time to be announced.

The Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road E., Westport, is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road E., Westport, CT 06880; or Mid-Fairfield Hospice, P.O. Box 489, Wilton, CT 06897.
