JOSEPH F. VENA

Joseph F. Vena, 90, of Fairfield, the husband of Julie Kaczegowicz Vena for more than 51 years, died Jan. 6, 2010, at home.

Born in Westport and a long-time Fairfield resident, he served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a foreman with C.O. Jeliff Co. for more than 31 years. During his lifetime, Vena was an avid golfer. He was also a member of the Southport Volunteer Fire Dept. for more than 25 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Virginia Ceci of Norwalk; two sisters, Edith (Lulu) Rodriguez of Fairfield and Marie Reitano of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Dino Veno, Andrew Veno, Nicholas Veno and Frank Veno.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Interment with military honors followed in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Elliott Schofield

Elliott Schofield, World War II veteran of Oldsmar, Fla. and Greenwich, passed away peacefully at his Oldsmar home on June 5, 2010.

He was born in Greenwich to Dr. and Mrs. Earle F. Schofield. He served four years in the U. S. Navy during World War II, then purchased the Raymond Shade Co., which he owned until his retirement in 1990.

He was an avid long distance swimmer and as a member of the U.S. Masters Swimming Organization and the Florida Combined Aquatic Team, competed in championship meets throughout the United States as well as England, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

Schofield was a member of the Oldsmar/Eastlake Rotary Club, the Redmen's Assoc. of Greenwich and the Suncoast YMCA swim team. He was a past president of the Greenwich Rotary Club, former treasurer of The Young Republican Club and a former member of the Greenwich YWCA. He also served on The Board of Directors of the Greenwich Boy's Club and The Board of Directors of the Greenwich YMCA.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Kirk Schofield, of Oldsmar and Greenwich and his daughter Jaclyn of Greenwich. He is also survived by several nephews: Earle III of California, Md. Wayne Schofield of Townsville, Australia, Ward Schofield of Queensland, Australia, and Kirk Mertz of Greenwich; a niece, Jan Schofield of Simi Valley, Calif.; his brother-in-law, Jack Kirk of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Mertz of Greenwich. He was predeceased by his three brothers: Earle, Wayne and Ward; his nephew, Walter Schofield; and nieces Lucinda Schofield and Lillian Becker.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in his memory to Kids in Crisis, Salem Street, Cos Cob, CT 06807.

Richard J. Sudell

Richard J. "Doddles" Sudell, 71, U.S. Air Force veteran of Greenwich died on June 6, 2010 of stomach cancer. Sudell was born in Greenwich on Oct. 17, 1938. He attended Greenwich Catholic Schools and graduated in 1956.

Sudell worked for Greenwich Travel.

He is survived by his four nephews: Edward, Richard, Steven and Michael Sudell.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at St. Mary Church at 10 a.m.

Ulric Richard Sullivan

Ulric Richard "Rick" Sullivan, Esq., 69, am Old Greenwich resident, passed away unexpectedly on June 7, 2010.

He was born in Holyoke, Mass. on May 2, 1941 to John Patrick and Leonie Montcalm Sullivan. After spending time working as a plumber for his father, and serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, he followed his sister to Washington, D.C., where he graduated from American University and Catholic University of America Law School with a Juris Doctorate in 1971 while working on the Capitol Police Force under the patronage of Congressman Peter Rodino.

Sullivan spent his entire professional career in New York City, first as a litigator for Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and then working in the Legal Department at PricewaterhouseCoopers for 36 years.

He was active in the community as a member of the Old Greenwich Association and the Representative Town Meeting.

Sullivan was an avid reader who finished 121 books on his kindle in the last year. He was also known for his ability to make friends wherever he went: on the street, at a tailgate, or a barbecue in the backyard, and often with a glass of wine.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marilyn Sims Sullivan; his four sons, Ulric, Samuel, John and Robert; five siblings: Rev. John L. Sullivan, Dr. Leonie Watson, Anne Burke, Thomas Sullivan, Esq., and Mary Donah. His daughter, Eleanor Sullivan, predeceased him.

Funeral services were held at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich on June 17. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albertson Memorial Church, 293 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT, 06870.

Joanne Inman

Joanne Inman, Riverside resident, passed away peacefully on Dec. 10, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

Inman was born on Jan. 28, 1945 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Following her graduation from high school, she moved to Santa Cruz, Calif. to attend Bethany University.

After three years, she moved with her husband to Chicago, Ill., where she began a career with IBM which spanned almost 40 years. Her job took her to San Jose and Westlake, Calif., Rockville, Md. and finally to Riverside, where she lived for 20 years.

Inman was a member at Christ Church Greenwich. Over the years, she was involved with the Choir of Men and Boys, and served on the Vestry, Chair of Human Resources, Adult Education Commission. She was also Stephen Minister.

Inman loved traveling and went to many places including England, Hawaii and Nagano, Japan for the winter Olympics with her son Steven. She most recently traveled to China and Thailand to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Her passion was gourmet cooking, and her favorite pastime was dining out, going to the beach for hotdogs and walks with her dog, Westminster.

Family and friends say Inman was faithful, loyal and committed in all that she did for her family, work, church and friends. She was also fun-loving, warm hearted and generous. In spite of her health challenges, she was remarkably courageous, positive in outlook, and never complained.

Inman is survived by her son, Steven; her parents, Lloyd and Joan James; her brother Doug James and wife, Barb; Ron Inman; Terry and Mary Inman; Sam and Jackie Inman; several nephews and their families; and many friends.

A memorial service and celebration of life was held on Dec. 19 at Christ Church Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Inman's memory to the Music Dept. of Christ Church Greenwich.

Bessie Konklenski Kiyak

Bessie Konklenski Kiyak, 98, a Glenville native, passed away peacefully in her home on Dec. 19, 2009.

Kiyak was born on Oct. 1, 1911 to Anna and Anthony Konklenski. She married Stephen Kiyak on Jan. 26, 1932 and enjoyed an active with him for 53 years until his death in 1985.

Kiyak was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Port Chester, N.Y. for more than 50 years.

She devoted her life to nurturing her family through hosting countless holidays, celebrations and regular Sunday dinners at her home.

She is survived by her sister, Nellie Rupp of Port Chester; a brother-in-law, George Kiyak and his wife Marion of Athens, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Eileen Kiyak of Port Chester; and her two daughters, Maryanne Kiyak of Port Chester and Dorothy Sudell and her husband Frank of Greenwich.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Charlene MacDonald and her husband Brian of Dover Plains, N.Y.; Debbie Dunster and her husband Will of Cos Cob; and Paul Sudell and his wife Amy of Greenwich; and seven great-grandchildren: Jimmy, Colin, Shawn, Derek, Anne, Tyler and Stephen.

Kiyak was preceded in death by her brother Joseph Parker and sister Mildred O'Brien.

A memorial service was held on Dec. 23 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Port Chester.
