Michael Kelly Lyons

Michael Kelly Lyons, 55, of Nelson Lane, Newtown died April 8, 1999 at his home.

He was born in Bridgeport, Conn. on June 12, 1943, son of the late Francis Joseph and Marion Patricia (Kelly) Lyons. He attended St. Peter School and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Norwalk, Conn., Class of 1963.

Mr. Lyons was employed in sales in the automotive industry and was a lifetime area resident. He was a member of the Newtown Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by a son, Justin Lyons of Utah; two brothers, Lockwood Lyons of North Kingston, R.I. and Sean Lyons of Massachusetts; two sisters, Patricia Doolan of Danbury and Mary Donnelly of Bethel, Vt.; a best friend, Anne Trister of Newtown; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, April 18, 2 p.m., at St. Rose Church, Newtown, Conn.

There are no calling hours. The Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Friends are asked to please omit flowers. Contributions in Mr. Lyons' memory may be made to Regional Hospice, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810.

M. Lyn Rhyins

Mari E. "Lyn" Rhyins, 74, of Griffith Lane, Ridgefield died unexpectedly at Danbury Hospital on Thursday, April 8, 1999. She was the wife of Richard W. Rhyins.

Mrs. Rhyins was born on February 15, 1925 in New York City, a daughter of the late Edwin and Anne Hoge Dirkes. A Ridgefield resident since 1958, she previously lived in Westchester. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Ridgefield.

Besides her husband, survivors include four sons, William R. of New York City, Peter D. of Prosper, Texas, Richard J. of Katonah, N.Y. and Gregory S. of Brookfield, Conn.; four daughters, Andrea F. of Mill Valley, Calif., Jacqueline Rhyins-Shannon of Knoxville, Tenn., MaryEllen of New York City and Sarah A. of San Francisco, Calif.; three brothers, Edwin Dirkes of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Carl Dirkes of Rock Falls, Ill. and Thomas Dirkes of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Joan Rockwell of Golts, Md.; and 10 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, 9 a.m., at St. Mary's Church, Ridgefield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends will be received on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kane Funeral Home, 41 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.

Jacob Prywes

Jacob Prywes, 79, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield, Conn.

He was born April 21, 1919 in Warsaw, Poland. He was a Holocaust survivor and immigrated to the United States in 1951.

Mr. Prywes is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Arnold and Charlotte Prywes of Dix Hills, N.Y., Dr. Harry and Donna Prywes of Irvington, N.Y. and Dr. Mitchell and Ilene Prywes of Danbury, Conn. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michael, Kim, Jonathan, Samara, Joshua, Bryan and Lisa.

Funeral services will be held on Friday morning (April 9) at New Montefiore Cemetery in Long Island.

The family will observe shiva at the homes of Arnold and Mitchell Prywes from Sunday to Thursday.

The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Jewish Home for the Elderly, 175 Jefferson St., Fairfield, CT 06432.

Dorothy E. Koehler

Dorothy E. Koehler, age 77, wife of Charles P. Koehler of 81C Heritage Village, Southbury, Conn., died Wednesday evening, April 7, 1999 at her home.

She was born in Bronx, N.Y. on August 27, 1921, daughter of the late Robert and Roberta (Mann) Elliott.

A resident of Southbury for six months, she had formerly lived in Whiting, N.J. She is survived, besides her husband, by two daughters, Patricia Ueckerman of Newtown and Laurie Crawford of Stockton, Calif.; one brother, Robert W. Elliott Jr. of Croton-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.; one sister, Patricia Garbarini of Ossining, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Samantha Ueckerman and Christopher Crawford; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 1:30 p.m., at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the time of the service.

Alice Miranda

Mrs. Alice (Aguiar) Miranda, 69, widow of Manuel V. Miranda, of King St., Naugatuck, Conn., died April 8, 1999 at the Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Miranda was born June 4, 1929 in Fall River, Mass., daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Carreiro) Aguiar. She was a former employee of the Risdon Mfg. Co. and Uniroyal, Inc. She had also worked for many years in the cafeteria at Hop Brook School. She was a communicant of St. Francis Church.

She is survived by a son, Thomas J. Miranda of New Milford; a daughter, Joyce M. Houlihan of Middlebury; a sister, Irene Medeiros of Waterbury; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, 11 a.m., from the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck to St. James Cemetery for graveside services at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Farren Columba of St. Francis Church officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:15 until 11 a.m.

Helen B. Holland

Helen B. Holland died April 8, 1999 at the Pope John Paul II Center at the age of 92.

Miss Holland was born in Bronx, N.Y. on September 12, 1906, daughter of the late Hedley L. and Ellen Sheehan Holland. She was educated in New York and moved to Brookfield in the 1950s. She made her home on Laurel Hill Road. She settled on Cherry St. in Danbury after leaving Brookfield and to Pope John Paul upon her illness.

Miss Holland is survived by several great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, 1 p.m., at St. Peter Cemetery, Sec. 13, in Danbury.

There are no calling hours. The Cornell Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ann W. Cooney

Ann W. Cooney, age 66, of Dover Plains, NY, died Friday, April 9, 1999 at Danbury Hospital. She was the wife of Malcolm T. Cooney.

Mrs. Cooney was born in Patterson on June 8, 1932 to the late Silas Jackson and Anna (Smith) Williams. She graduated from Carmel High School in 1950 and SUNY Albany in 1954.

Mrs. Cooney was married to Malcolm T. Cooney on August 1, 1987 in Pawling. She was a Guidance Secretary for the Pawling Central School District at Pawling High School for 23 years, retiring in June of 1994.

Mrs. Cooney was a Notary Public for 17 years. She had taught Sunday School and attended both the Patterson Presbyterian Church and the Pawling Methodist Church over the years. Mrs. Cooney was a member of the County, State and National Educational Secretaries Associations. She was also a member of the Civil Service Employees Association for 23 years, Local 1000, AFL-CIO.

Mrs. Cooney had lived in Dover Plains since 1987. She had lived in Pawling from 1956-1987 and Patterson until 1956.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Cooney is survived by a son, Mark S. Woodin of Dover Plains; a daughter, Michelle M. Chuisano of Danbury; two stepsons, Scott Cooney of Danbury and Bradley Cooney of Mississippi; four brothers, Adolph, Lewis, and Charles Williams all of Patterson and Frank Williams of Millerton, NY; a sister, Eva Grey of Dover Plains; a half-brother, Adelbert Mead of Brewster; a half-sister, Marion Carino of Bay Shore, NY; two grandchildren, Zacchary W. Woodin of Dover Plains and Elise Michelle Chisano of Danbury; and a step-grandson, Brendan Cooney of Danbury.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 12th at 10:00 a.m. at Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Patterson, NY. Interment in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Patterson. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, April 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, (Breast Cancer Research), Putnam County Unit, 220 Route 6, Mahopac, NY 10541.

Helen Grasko Dyer

Helen Grasko Dyer, age 75, of Bridgeport, wife of the late Julius Dyer, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, in her home. Born in Jessup, Pa., Mrs. Dyer was a Bridgeport resident for most of her life. She had retired from the Dictaphone Corp.

Mrs. Dyer is survived by a son, Lawrence Dyer and his wife Janice of Shelton; a daughter, Marianne Garrow of Bridgeport; sisters, Olga Brunza of Pennsylvania and Margaret Serbin of Bridgeport; grandsons, Bruce Dyer and Christopher Garrow and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday (today) at 8:30 a.m. in the Frank Polke and Son Funeral Home, 1546 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport and at 9 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church, Boston Avenue, Bridgeport. Burial to follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gambro Health Care, 900 Madison Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06606.

Terrance F. Guider

Terrance F. Guider, a Suffern resident of 42 years, died Wed., April 7, 1999, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. He was 72.

Mr. Guider was born March 10, 1927, in Buffalo, N.Y., to William and Anne Carney Guider. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII, and graduated Dartmouth College and Amos Tuck School of Business in Hanover, N.H., in 1950.

Mr. Guider married Mary Elizabeth Williams in 1952 and worked as a sales manager for Otis Elevator. After retiring from Otis Elevator, he worked for McGraw Hill Publishing in Westchester. He was active in the vestry of Christ Church of Ramapo, where he also was assistant treasurer and a Sunday School teacher.

He was on the planning board of the Village of Suffern, and was a coach for Suffern Little League, Babe Ruth League and Ramapo Youth Hockey.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Bill Guider of Danbury, CT, John Guider of Ridgefield, CT, Marianna Vertullo of Airmont, N.Y., and Alex Guider of Suffern; and five grandchildren, Anthony Vertullo, Michelle Guider, Robert Guider, Terrance Guider & Erica Guider.

Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m. at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, Suffern. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Suffern. Cremation will follow. Friends are asked to send donations to Boys Town, USA.

Josephine Martsen

Josephine T. (Szatinski) Martsen, age 86, of New Milford, formerly of New York, died on Thursday at the Pope John Paul II Center for Healthcare, Danbury.

Ms. Martsen was born in New York, New York, March 19, 1913, a daughter of the late Ignatius and Bertha (Fincza) Szatinski. She was raised in New York, graduating from local schools, and resided in the New York area until moving to New Milford to reside with her daughter 9 years ago.

In New Milford, Ms. Martsen was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Rubini of New Milford; one brother, Nicholas Szatinski of Lynbrook, N.Y.; one sister, Jean Kistinger of Danbury; three grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 12, at 9:30 a.m. from the Colonial Funeral Home, 87 Park Lane Road, New Milford, to St. Francis Xavier Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Raymond Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 thru 5 p.m.

Dorothy Hartell

Dorothy Hartell, 100, wife of the late Andrew R. Hartell, died at the Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care on Friday, April 9, 1999.

She was born in Philadelphia, PA, January 21, 1899, daughter of the late Isaac and Catherine Jackson. She had been a Danbury resident most of her life and was a retired employee of the Barden Corporation, she retired in 1962. She had also been a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Danbury, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Gold Star Mothers and the Navy Mothers.

Mrs. Hartell is survived by 2 sons, Leonard Hartell of Brookfield and Charles Hartell of Tyler, Texas; she is also the beloved grandmother of Sharon Siegel of Bethel, Sandie Barry of Danbury, Jack Hartell of Florida, Judy Tskuada of Glastonbury, Joyce O'Neill of Newtown, M.J. Hartell of Weston, Gary Hartell of Willington, Cheryl Hartell of Lake Grove, N.Y. and Robert Hartell and Jeffrey Hartell. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased by 3 sons, Frederick Hartell, Lee Ross Hartell (Medal of Honor Winner in the Korean War) and Andrew S. Hartell.

Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church of Danbury, on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In honor of Dorothy's love for children and volunteer service, contributions may be made to the Hanahoe Memorial Children's Clinic, 205 Main St., Danbury, CT 06810 or to the Pope John Paul Recreation Fund, 33 Lincoln Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.
