Nancy T. Furey, 88, former resident

Nancy Thomas Furey died Saturday, March 3, at Duxbury House in Duxbury, Mass.

She was 88 and a former resident of Cross River.

She was born in Syracuse and was the wife of the late George W. Furey Jr. In addition to Cross River and Duxbury, Ms. Furey lived in Brightwaters, Canandaigua and Heritage Village in Southbury, Conn.

Ms. Furey had three children, the late George W. Furey III, the late Thomas B. Furey and Nancy “Ninky” Savage of Duxbury. She also leaves two grandchildren, Jennifer Savage of Granby, Conn., and Peter C. Savage Jr. of West Chester, Ohio, where her three great-grandsons, Peter, Logan and Jett Savage, also reside.

She was an avid golfer, having embraced the game in her 30s. She was club champion at the Canandaigua Country Club, Waccabuc Country Club and Heritage Village Country Club.

While living in Duxbury, Ms. Furey became a daily visitor at the Duxbury Senior Center, playing bridge, exercising and enjoying the company of other visitors. The family also wants to thank Duxbury House for its tender care in Ms. Furey’s last year.

A celebration reception is planned at the Duxbury Senior Center on Sunday, March 11, from 2 to 4.

Memorial donations may be made to Duxbury Senior Center, 10 Mayflower St., Duxbury, MA 02332, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.

James J. O’Connor, 67, former resident

James J. O’Connor Jr. died on March 1. He was 67 and a former resident of South Salem.

Born in the Bronx to James J. Sr. and Katherine Sexton O’Connor, Mr. O’Connor attended local schools before joining the New York City Police Department in 1965.

During his 20 years in the police department, Mr. O’Connor worked in the 52nd Precinct as a warrant officer and then community affairs officer. In 1985, he retired from the force whereupon he initiated a second successful career as a seafood broker for Homaris Seafood in Mount Kisco. Retiring in 2000, he moved from South Salem to Wolf Lake in Wurtsboro. Using his weekends during his lifetime, he constructed two homes on Wolf Lake to accommodate his growing family.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, his life was dedicated to his family, the outdoors and making those around him better people for having known him, his family said.

Beloved husband of the late Patricia Grant O’ Connor, Mr. O’Connor is survived by his daughter Karen Frevele and her husband, John, of Millbrook; two sons, Daniel O’Connor and his wife, Carol, of Peekskill and James O’Connor III and his wife, Rosemary, of Brookfield, Conn.; and nine grandchildren, Natalie, Keith, Dalton, Amber, Shannon, James IV, Clare, Maggie and Grant.

Mr. O’Connor is also survived by his best friend and devoted companion, Carolyn Price. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, the family said.

Visitation for family and friends was at Clark Associates Funeral Home, in Katonah on March 4.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s RC Church in Katonah on March 5.

Burial was at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Charles J. Hall, 79, former South Salem resident

Charles Johnston Hall died May 2 at Danbury (Conn.) Hospital. He was 79 and a former resident of the Lake Kitchawan area in South Salem before moving to Ridgefield, Conn., three years ago.

He was born in Michigan to the late Jay Vandergrift Hall and the late Eileen Haswell. Mr. Hall grew up in Greenwich, Conn., and then in Stamford, Conn.

Mr. Hall’s true passion in life was sailing. He made his first boat when he was 10 years old, then owned many after that. Mr. and Mrs. Hall had enjoyed sailing to Montauk, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. He enjoyed playing pool at the Ponus Yacht Club in Stamford, Conn.

He loved his wife, the late Josephine (Novak) Hall, and his five children, Nora, Joseph, Stuart, Sandra and Linda, three of whom were his own. Mr. Hall had six grandchildren, Mark, Dannielle, Jamie, Margaret, Kenneth and Kimberly.

Mr. Hall attended Wooster School in Danbury, Conn. where he played football, and went to Brown University. He worked in construction and was a proud member of Teamster Union Local #456 for more than 30 years.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Chapel in Vista.

“This is his first Father’s Day in heaven and he is sadly missed, ” said daughter Sandy Hall.

Barbara W. Mead, 91, former Waccabuc resident

Barbara “Bobbie” W. Mead died on Monday, June 4, at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C. She was 91 and a former longtime Waccabuc resident.

Mrs. Mead was born in Bronxville and grew up in White Plains. After marrying the late John J. S. Mead, former New York state assemblyman and former Westchester County attorney, Mrs. Mead moved to Waccabuc. She worked with the late James Lowe for many years in the wire and cable industry and was corporate secretary for Lowe Associates. The Meads retired from Waccabuc to Chathamport, Mass., in 1973. Following Mr. Mead’s death, Mrs. Mead moved to Jensen Beach, Fla., to Vero Beach, Fla., and to Matthews, N.C.

Mrs. Mead is survived by her son, John J. S. Mead Jr. of Aiken, S.C., and her stepson, George S. Mead of Salvo, N.C. Besides her sons, survivors include her granddaughters, Barbara G. Davis and Virginia M. Hobson of Wake Forest, N.C., and Sally A. Mead and Elizabeth L. Mead of California. She is also survived by her grandsons, Alan W. Tubman of Maine and William A. Mead of California, in addition to 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Millie Heineman, 75, former secretary

Millie Heineman of Somers died at her home on May 24. She was 75.

Ms. Heineman was born Oct. 22, 1931 in St. Louis, Mo. to Leslie J. and Vivian Fox Meyer.

Ms. Heineman was the secretary to the chief of police in the town of Bedford. She graduated from Oakwood High School in Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Heineman served as secretary for Heritage Hills Condo 16 Board of Managers and was also a member of the Women’s Civic Club of Katonah.

She will be remembered for her friendliness, strength, integrity and love for her family.

Ms. Heineman is survived by her three children, Kathleen Frankel of San Miguel De Alllende, Mexico, Jeffrey Heineman of Layton, Utah and Scott Heineman of Virginia Beach, Va. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry, in 1985.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 30 in the Clarks Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah from 4 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 31 in Oakwood Cemetery, Mount Kisco at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Hospice of Westchester and Putnam, 540 White Plains Road, Tarrytown, N.Y. 10591.

Marilyn Madsen, 71, worked for town

Marilyn J. Madsen of South Salem died Tuesday at Field Home-Holy Comforter in Yorktown Heights.

She was 71.

Mrs. Madsen was born May 28, 1935 in Mount Kisco, the daughter of the late John and the late Kathryn (Wood) Juengst.

She was the secretary for the Lewisboro Planning Board for more than 20 years. Mrs. Madsen was active with the Boy Scout Troop 101 and the Pound Ridge Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband, Carl F. Madsen; daughter Kathryn Anderson and her husband, John, of Brookfield, Conn.; son Carl R. Madsen and his wife, Jeri, of Alpine, N.J.; granddaughter Jennifer; her sister Jane Moore of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and brother John Juengst of Ormond Beach, Fla.

Friends may call at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah, on Friday, May 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph's RC Church in Croton Falls, on Saturday at 9:15. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Somers.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam, 540 White Plains Rd, Suite 300, Tarrytown, NY 10591.

Joseph Heissan, 65, former resident

Dr. Joseph A. Heissan, a former South Salem resident and equine veterinarian in Fairfield and Westchester counties, died on Monday, April 16, surrounded by his family. He was 65.

Dr. Heissan is survived by his sister and an extended family that includes three sons, two daughters, a daughter-in-law, two stepdaughters, five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Ridgefield, Conn., at 11 on Saturday, April 21.

Contributions may be made to a scholarship fund established in his memory at the Cooperstown Central School, 39 Linden Ave., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
