Alfred A. Zottola, 91, resident’s father

Alfred A. “Zip” Zottola of Bedford Hills died Friday, July 13 at Salem Hills Health Care Center in Purdys. He was 91 and the father of Jill Alvarez and her husband, Augie, of Waccabuc.

Mr. Zottola was born April 16, 1916 in Helper, Utah, the son of the late Dominic and the late Ruth (Terlizzi) Zottola.

He married Margaret Lewis in 1939.

He was employed by United States Postal Service in Bedford Hills for 49 years and served as the postmaster from 1959 until his retirement.

Mr. Zottola was a Bedford Town Board member in 1987, 1988 and 1990.

He was a member of the Bedford Hills Volunteer Fire Department since 1942 - department secretary from 1948 to 1952, treasurer from 1953 to 1960 and president since 1961. He was lieutenant and secretary of the Engine Company since 1947, and a member of the Fire Police since 1955 and captain of the Fire Police in 1957.

Mr. Zottola was an active member of the Bedford Hills Lions Club for 52 years and was named Lion of the Year in 1988. He also received the Lions Club Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

He was a charter member and treasurer of the Bedford Hills Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of the Bedford Hills Library, vice president of the board of directors of the Bedford Hills Community House, member of the board of education of the Bedford Central School District and a charter member of the Bedford Hills Station Improvement Association.

He was a founder together with “Buffalo” Bob Smith of the Bedford Hills Little League. He was a founder of the Bedford Hills Women's softball league.

In appreciation of his many years of service to the community, May 8 was declared the Alfred “Zip” Zottola Day in Bedford Hills.

In addition to his daughter and his wife, Mr. Zottola is survived by his sons Craig and his wife, Denise, of Holmes and Wayne Zottola of Bedford Hills. He is the father-in-law of Margaret Zottola of Amawalk. His son Bradley died in 1975. He also has 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Donald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s RC Church, Katonah, on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow at Bedford Union Cemetery.

Imelda Attridge, 79, of South Salem

Imelda W. Attridge died in her home on May 28. She was 79.

Ms. Attridge was born Oct. 18, 1927, to Charles J. and Imelda (Cook) Wicks. She grew up in Thornwood and graduated from Pleasantville High School and Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. She worked for Joseph P. Kennedy and Bristol Myers in New York City. At age 38 she returned to school and graduated cum laude from Western Connecticut University. She earned a master’s degree in education and taught third grade for 23 years in Somers, retiring in 1992.

In 1951, she married Richard A. Attridge in Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne. They moved to South Salem in 1954, where Ms. Attridge had spent summers since she was 12.

Always active in her community, Ms. Attridge taught Sunday school, was a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader, a Eucharist minister, a church lector, and a volunteer at Keeler Tavern in Ridgefield, Conn.

Ms. Attridge was a lifelong learner and teacher. After retiring, she spent much of her time in West Windsor, Vt., and was a volunteer at Billings Farm Museum. She took classes at Dartmouth College, Chautauqua and Founder’s Hall. She was an artist who enjoyed drawing, painting and quilting. Other interests included reading, gardening, driving horse carriages with her husband, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Ms. Attridge will be remembered as a kind, loving, courageous, and gentle person by all who knew her, her family said. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Donald. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Charles, and his wife, Holly, and grandson Richard of Wilbraham, Mass.; her daughter, Kim Sherrill, and her husband, Donald, and grandson Robert of Boone, N.C.; and sister Barbara McCreary and husband, John, of Wellsburg, W.V.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 28, at 11 at the South Salem Presbyterian Church at 111 Spring St.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam, 540 White Plains Road, STE 300, Tarrytown, NY 10591-5132.

Joseph Benedick, 79, former deli owner

Joseph J. Benedick Jr. of Ridgefield, Conn., died on Saturday, June 23, at Wilton Meadows, in Wilton, Conn. He was 79 and the former owner of The Food Basket on Smith Ridge Road in Vista.

Mr. Benedick was born in Norwalk, Conn., on June 18, 1928, son of the late Joseph J. and Mary Benedick. He attended Norwalk schools and for many years was a self-employed plumber and formerly owned a delicatessen shop in Wilton, and was the owner of The Food Basket in Vista for four years before retiring in 1996.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a resident of Ridgefield for the past 46 years.

Mr. Benedick was the husband of the late Eleanor (Jaeger) Benedick. Survivors include his daughter, Linda J. Benedick, and son, Joseph J. Benedick III, both of Ridgefield.

Funeral services will took place on Wednesday, June 27, in the Kane Funeral Home in Ridgefield.

Burial followed in St. Mary cemetery in Ridgefield.

Charles J. Hall, 79, former South Salem resident

Charles Johnston Hall died May 2 at Danbury (Conn.) Hospital. He was 79 and a former resident of the Lake Kitchawan area in South Salem before moving to Ridgefield, Conn., three years ago.

He was born in Michigan to the late Jay Vandergrift Hall and the late Eileen Haswell. Mr. Hall grew up in Greenwich, Conn., and then in Stamford, Conn.

Mr. Hall’s true passion in life was sailing. He made his first boat when he was 10 years old, then owned many after that. Mr. and Mrs. Hall had enjoyed sailing to Montauk, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. He enjoyed playing pool at the Ponus Yacht Club in Stamford, Conn.

He loved his wife, the late Josephine (Novak) Hall, and his five children, Nora, Joseph, Stuart, Sandra and Linda, three of whom were his own. Mr. Hall had six grandchildren, Mark, Dannielle, Jamie, Margaret, Kenneth and Kimberly.

Mr. Hall attended Wooster School in Danbury, Conn. where he played football, and went to Brown University. He worked in construction and was a proud member of Teamster Union Local #456 for more than 30 years.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Chapel in Vista.

“This is his first Father’s Day in heaven and he is sadly missed, ” said daughter Sandy Hall.

Barbara W. Mead, 91, former Waccabuc resident

Barbara “Bobbie” W. Mead died on Monday, June 4, at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C. She was 91 and a former longtime Waccabuc resident.

Mrs. Mead was born in Bronxville and grew up in White Plains. After marrying the late John J. S. Mead, former New York state assemblyman and former Westchester County attorney, Mrs. Mead moved to Waccabuc. She worked with the late James Lowe for many years in the wire and cable industry and was corporate secretary for Lowe Associates. The Meads retired from Waccabuc to Chathamport, Mass., in 1973. Following Mr. Mead’s death, Mrs. Mead moved to Jensen Beach, Fla., to Vero Beach, Fla., and to Matthews, N.C.

Mrs. Mead is survived by her son, John J. S. Mead Jr. of Aiken, S.C., and her stepson, George S. Mead of Salvo, N.C. Besides her sons, survivors include her granddaughters, Barbara G. Davis and Virginia M. Hobson of Wake Forest, N.C., and Sally A. Mead and Elizabeth L. Mead of California. She is also survived by her grandsons, Alan W. Tubman of Maine and William A. Mead of California, in addition to 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Anne Zimmermann, 88, of South Salem

Anne Zimmermann, who had lived in South Salem since 1956, died of natural causes in her home of many years on Friday, Oct. 5. She was 88 years old.

The third of four children, she was born Ann Dorothy Murray to Frank J. Murray and Ann D. Costello in Newton, Mass., where she was raised. After completing a secretarial program at the Katharine Gibbs School, she married Philip Frank Zimmermann in 1941, and the couple moved to South Salem in 1956. For 20 years she worked in Pleasantville as an executive assistant and marketing analyst at Reader’s Digest. She retired from the company in 1984.

A spirited lifelong learner with a tenacious intellect, she demonstrated a keen and wide-ranging interest in literature, history, film, and gardening. She never ceased to amaze her family and friends with her ability to solve difficult crossword puzzles and answer Jeopardy! questions with the ease and speed of an onstage contestant, her family said. She was also an avid and skilled duplicate bridge player and achieved grandmaster status. She will be missed greatly by family and friends alike.

Ms. Zimmermann is survived by her brother, John Murray, of New Hampshire; her four children, Philip Zimmermann of Long Beach, Calif., Paul Zimmermann of Rensselaer, Nancy Barrows of Portland, Ore., and Peter Zimmermann of Norwalk, Conn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Her family and friends will celebrate her life in a private service. Donations may be made to Hospice of Westchester: hospiceofwestchester.com/donations.php.
